Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

“Stay. No, stay. I won’t be too long” Nira hunched her shoulders against the accusing glare of the canine as she left her by the entrance. In truth, Marva was the smart one here. She could smell what lay down these dimly lit tunnels, and trusted her owner to venture there not one bit. Trouble always happened when they parted, as both were aware.

But with marks changed hands, well… She had to try.

She’d waved off the offer to let her know what to expect. She knew beasts; she did not need someone there interfering, pointing out which one had which traits, and handicapping her judgement. The woman could observe well enough on her own, thank you, and she trusted her gut more than any holder here. This was her task to complete and hers alone. Fingers trailed along a wall as she followed the short handler’s directions.

The sound, of course, preceded all sight of the pens.

The heavy, wet breathing of large creatures, and the scuffle as their claws scraped against unforgiving stone, echoed down to her. Some whined, softly. Others growled. Musk swiftly filled the air, and she heard the abrupt lull that meant the whers had either seen or smelt her approach. Wavering only a moment, she firmed her will, and stepped out into the area where they were contained, levelling an unflappable gaze at any that looked her way. These were her choices. A few were immediately ruled out. Too mean, or too meek. One handsome boy met her gaze before pointedly turning away; clearly, she was not to have his approval. Her mouth twitched.

Down the rows she went. Once she stopped, looking at a blue so happy she could scarce believe he had come from bandits, before moving on. If it didn’t feel right, she would not force it; there was nothing to be gained in such an awkward partnership. And if the short man would not give her those marks back, she would go over his head as many times as need be until she could be on her way again.

Secure in the knowledge that everything would be the same, should none of these creatures appeal, she reached one of the last whers. It was a common looking thing, really, a small brown (relatively speaking) with the same wariness to its gaze that some of the others had. For some reason, she stopped. There was something else in those dull eyes.

He was lying in a corner with limbs loosely tucked in, returning her look, his chin never leaving the floor. It took her a moment, standing there, to pin down what she felt she saw. The others… had fight. Restrained, but immediately apparent. This one, with his marred rump and shredded wing, looked done. He’d been crushed, and looked for no kindness in this place. It hurt her heart.

She lowered herself onto her knees, never breaking eye contact. This prompted a bit of interest, although the wher didn’t move. Well, curiosity was better than outright rejection. She got herself comfortable, smoothing her travel rumpled clothes, and watched. Watched for a long time, face a mask of patience, letting him grow assured that she wouldn’t be springing up any time soon, or with any speed. When eventually his chin lifted, just a little, she allowed a slight smile to lighten her face.

“I’m looking for a wher.” The words made him twitch, so suddenly were they said, and she gentled them further as she continued. “My canine is growing old, and I travel often. I need a companion to help me.”

Fighting.

It was no more than a whisper of thought, really, but it made her shiver. Few were the times a dragon ever spoke to her; never had a wher. She drew a breath and replied honestly. Better not to get any hopes up. “Maybe. I cannot fight well, nor do I want to learn. I’m small enough that without my canine I would be attacked often.”

Slowly she spread her arms, better showing off her stature. To her satisfaction, some colour had entered those dull eyes. “I can’t guarantee there’d be no scuffles, but I think we might help one another, if you’d agree to take me. There is honest work, farming work, to be done in the future. Check my mind if you like; I’m not lying.”

The brown blinked slowly, considering, but whether he checked or not she didn’t know. He was appraising her, though, and at that moment she realized he wasn’t beaten so much as resigned. The wher knew he’d be getting a new master, and the idea of having a choice in the matter seemed to confuse him. Clearly he was used to orders. She sensed, too, that he really was thinking about it and weighing his options. That… was almost frightening. Her understanding of whers as creatures sometimes equivalent or just above a runner in terms of intelligence would need adjusting.

For a long time they remained that way. Her legs had gone numb, and began to prickle in that warning way, when the brown huffed softly. He stood; head turned to the side, he regarded her with a single eye as he sidled cautiously close to the door of the makeshift pen. The chain about his neck rattled across the floor, until it drew up to its final length. … Nirask will travel.

For now. The unspoken feeling reverberated through her mind as the link was made. She smiled again, slightly, as she stretched out her legs and gently pushed the blood back into them. The feeling… she wasn’t sure what to say. It was like the wher had slipped part of himself into her head, in a space she hadn’t known was empty, and rattled everything around in the process. It would take some serious getting used to.

“We’ll do well, I think. Marva is the canine’s name; I’ll introduce you soon.” Was she giddy? Maybe a little. It was just so odd.

As soon as she could stand, she pulled the latch on the door and then (more carefully) the metal crossbar from his collar so that he might leave. The smell and feel of him, so very close, and their shared feeling of curiosity as they warily became acquainted, almost overwhelmed her. The sense of that, however, caused him to draw away, and when she went to leave he hesitated. Then, past all the others, his head dipped low, he followed her.
