Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Feran peeped happily at the copper's greeting, winging around him curiously a couple of times before finally returning to Haely and giving her a trill of approval as she settled down on the girl's shoulders. This was a good dragon to talk to, and so polite!

Haely only giggled at her gold, still remaining half-hidden behind Az'riel as the copper spoke to her. When the copper set his chin down on the ground, however, and practically invited her to come closer... well, how could she refuse? After a few moments' bashful hesitation, she finally bounded over to the dragon. He was even more amazing up close, but also somehow less scary--even though he towered over her despite lying down and making himself as small as he could. She could see the slow rise and fall of his sides with his breath, and watched the way his muscles shifted beneath his shining hide with every minuscule movement that he made.

All of this observation only further cemented in her mind how very much she wanted to someday have a dragon of her own.

"It's nice to meet you, too! And your Rider--he's very nice," she proclaimed, smile stuck on her lips as she continued to examine him with her odd-colored eyes. "You might know my mom--or her dragon, anyway! They both got hurt in that one really bad Threadfall--the one with all the wind?--and they've been grounded for awhile but they're doing drills again now and mom's getting used to life without an arm. She's taller than me but not by a whole lot, and she's got dark brown eyes and hair just like mine. Her dragon is a pretty grey, but she's not very friendly! It's just the way she is," she rambled, constantly shifting her weight from her toes to her heels.

"My mom's name is Harina, and her dragon is Velegath. I, um... I forget which Wing they're in, though," she admitted, a bit bashfully. She'd never really thought Wing assignments were all that interesting or worth knowing--aside from Wingleaders and the like, most of it was all the same.

"I'm almost old enough to Stand, and then I'm gonna be a Rider just like my mama. Only another month or two! I'm gonna be the best Candidate ever!"

She turned to grin at Az'riel specifically at this, her arms folded behind her back.

"Don't you think so, Mr. Az'riel?"

He seemed to have earned Feran’s seal of approval, and his eyes spun in happy blues. He kept still, however, and waited patiently for the girl to approach; it didn’t take long. She looked him over quite intently, and he did his best to hold still through her inspection, sliding a few amused glances Az’riel’s way. The man was still staring seemingly-distractedly out at the ‘bowl, but Liyanth wasn't fooled. He was almost certainly eavesdropping.
And your Rider—he’s very nice.
He does his best, he agreed, delighting in the puzzled look that earned the both of them from the man in question. Ignoring him, he hummed in sympathy at the mention of the windy threadfall – it had been a particularly bad one – before interjecting:
I am sorry to hear that. But they have recovered?
A lost arm wasn’t the most common of thread injuries, and he hunched his shoulders in sympathy. It sounded quite dreadful, in fact.
…but she’s not very friendly! It’s just the way she is.
That happens, sometimes, he agreed solemnly. But they both sound lovely.

Their names, when Haelya revealed them, seemed vaguely familiar, but only in the way most Vaioans' names likely would. Regretfully, he admitted:
I’m afraid I don’t know them. They are not in Granite wing – that one’s mine, he tacked on, with a bit of pride. He’d been reassigned recently, but was enjoying the process of settling in, running drills with fresh faces and acquiring new friends. Az’riel, predictably, had seen it all as a terrible imposition, and was still annoyed at the change.

He was delighted to learn she’d soon be a Candidate; he would have someone to cheer for, after all. How exciting!
That is excellent! I take mine to see all the hatchings – we will have to keep an eye out for you.
He subsided, then, to let Az work his way back into the conversation. The man had been caught off guard, not expecting to be included. Drifting back toward them, he inclined his head in acknowledgment.
“I think you’ll certainly be one of the most enthusiastic.” He conceded, with a hint of a smile. Enthusiasm wasn’t a quality he typically appreciated in others, but she was young and might have years of hatchings ahead of her – in this case, he thought it would serve her well. In this vein, after a brief hesitation, he added:

“You may have to wait for a little while, I’m afraid – many weyrbrats like yourself do. But I’m confident you’ll see your way into weyrlinghood, so I would advise you not to become discouraged, if it takes a hatching or two… or more.” He cleared his throat, uncomfortable – she hadn’t asked for his advice, and he didn’t want to upset her, or spoil her excitement. He also didn’t want to make false promises – there was no telling whether she’d Impress at all, but statistically the odds were in her favor. Weyrbrats overwhelmingly made their way into the wings, whether because they tended to be suited to Weyr life or because they attended many more hatchings, on average, than those Searched out of Hold and Hall. Still, it seemed practical to remind her that her first hatching was unlikely to be her last.
“But… yes. Liyanth and I will certainly be rooting for you.”
I think you’ll enjoy Candidacy, the copper was quick to add. You’ll get to meet people from all across Pern. Mine was ancient by the time they Searched him-
Thanks for that, Az interjected drolly.
-so he wasn't all that excited, when they brought him here. But you’ll be much better prepared. He concluded, satisfied with his little analysis, and ignoring the eye-roll it earned him from his rider. Az could be a bit of a spoilsport, but that was all right - he could be excited enough for the both of them.

"Yeah, she's mostly better," the girl chirped in reply to the copper's kind question about her mother's injuries. "Both of 'em healed up right nice, they're just workin' on figuring out how ta get around again. Not surprised you don't know 'em, though, they're not very sociable."

She grinned when Az'riel began to speak again, whirling to face him again as she spun on one foot. She tilted her head slightly to one side when he said she may have to wait awhile, but his clarifying addition brought the smile back in full force once more. Naturally, she thought, she had quite a bit to learn about being a Candidate. She herself wouldn't be surprised if it took a clutch or two before she managed to find just the right partner out there--but she hoped it wouldn't take too terribly long, so that she could show off her newest best friend to her mother as soon as she possibly could.

Still, though, what he said made sense; being as he was a fully-fledged Rider, she took his words as the Gospel Truth, and nodded solemnly when he gave his advice to not let herself get discouraged by the waiting.

"I won't, Mr. Az'riel, sir! My mama said she had to wait almost five Turns for her dragon, so I won't get too down if I don't get one the first couple of times I Stand. And I'm gonna be really careful out there so the little ones won't hurt me too bad out there, too," she added, hooking her thumbs in her pockets as she rocked from toe to heel. Her grin only grew brighter when he reassured that both he and his dragon would be keeping a close eye on her when Hatching days came.

"Thanks! I'll make sure ta keep an eye out for ya when I'm Standin' out there."

She giggled at Liyanth's interjection, putting a hand over her lips to try and hide her smile from the somewhat put-upon Az'riel as the man gave his dragon a flat look.

"I'm really lookin' forward ta meetin' people! Mama always says every person has somethin' ta teach ya," she replied, smiling as Feran returned to perch on her head. "Even the nasty ones like those that locked me up in the storeroom today. They taught me not ta be so trustin'. Next time they tell me there's herbs in there, I'll know better."

…Both of ‘em healed up right nice…
That’s good to hear, Liyanth answered, with earnest relief. If Az had a microscopic capacity for empathy, Liyanth had probably too much. His rider disdained such sentimentality, but he’d always thought they were lucky, that they balanced each other out so well.

He was relieved, in any case, to see Haelya took his rider’s advice in the spirit in which it was intended. That, too, was something that tended to trip the man up, but for all that she had lots to say, Haelya seemed to listen very carefully, too. Not to mention it would have been a shame, if Az’riel had inadvertently derailed her excitement.

And she was still calling him ‘sir’. Liyanth couldn’t help a gleeful rumble, watching the pair navigate their conversation – Haelya much more capably, despite Az’riel’s ever-elevated diction.
My mama said she had to wait…
“That does happen,” he confirmed, with equal solemnity. “Hopefully your match won’t keep you waiting quite so long.”
And I’m gonna be real careful…
At that, his mouth quirked up in a smile. It was an expression that always looked a little sour, the way he wore it, but it was no less genuine for that.
“That’s very good,” he confirmed, hoping to reinforce that attitude. All too often, Candidates panicked or let their attention stray on the Sands. For someone like Haelya, who was small in body if not in attitude, such a lapse would be especially risky. “They don’t usually mean to, but they can be terribly clumsy things.” And then, because Liyanth had no apparent care for Az’riel’s privacy, he rolled his eyes and added:
“Liyanth insisted on running, or trying to, the moment he was free of his shell. His legs were too long and his head too big, though – he looked patently absurd.”

Liyanth endured this with good grace; his eyes, whirling green, betrayed more than a little amusement. However ridiculous he’d looked, Az’riel had surely deserved it. The man had managed to look buttoned-up and stuffy even in the silly white robe.
…I’ll make sure ta keep an eye out…
Please do! He interjected, already excited for the next clutch to come along.

Az’riel noted Haelya’s amused expression, and shot her a look as put-upon as the one he’d given Liyanth – but he was still smiling, and meant it in good fun.
…every person has somethin’ ta teach ya…
How interesting, Liyanth interjected. Pondering this, he decided it seemed like very good advice, and absolutely not the sort of thing Az’riel would subscribe to. The man in question, reminded of the delinquents and the prank, felt his smile melt away, his expression sliding back into its customary frown.
“Yes, well,” he said, flicking an imagined speck of dirt off his sleeve and avoiding both Liyanth and Haelya’s gaze. “If they give you any more trouble, you could let me know. I can ensure they’re given more productive things to do with their time. Shoveling out the dragon latrines, perhaps.”
He was feeling acutely uncomfortable, again – particularly with Liyanth giving him a weighty, pleased look – but Haelya hadn’t seemed to notice his fumbling attempts at amiability before, so perhaps his good luck would hold. He didn’t often make such offers, and wasn’t sure what had compelled him to make this one, now. Perhaps the child’s sobbing, earlier, had… affected him. What a dreadful thought.

Liyanth, unconvinced, touched his nose affectionately to the man’s shoulder, and darted a would-be conspiratorial look the weyrbrat’s way.
