Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

"Oh, yeah, I heard there's all sorts of rare stuff in there," the older boy drawled, smirking at Haely as the other Weyrbrats giggled around them. "Stuff they don't even keep in the Infirmary because it's so rare."

"Yeah! They've got this special plant, it like--it totally cures a cut if you squeeze it. Just closes it up like--" the girl snapped her fingers, red hair bouncing off her shoulders, "that! I bet you could find it if you went in."

Haely shifted uncomfortably from foot-to-foot, rubbing the back of her neck. She had tried to integrate herself with her 'friends' after their midday meal, but the reception had been about as frigid as usual. She didn't trust them, but she was so desperate to be liked--and to find something special, that would then make her special--she was willing to suspend disbelief for the time being.

"I dunno," she muttered. "I'll get in trouble if the drudges catch me huntin' through rare stocks..."

"Nah," the head boy replied, flapping his hand dismissively. "They know you're into all that stuff. I bet they'd even help you find it! Now, us, they know we'd just use it for pranks. We'd get in trouble, but you're golden."

She grimaced, reminded of Feran's absence from her shoulders. The tiny gold didn't like her company, and so had left in a flustered ruffle of wings when the boisterous group had gotten started on their coercion.

"Well... Are you sure it's really all that good?"

"Positive. Why don't you go in and find out? C'mon, I'll even go in with you," the boy crowed, grinning from ear to ear as he shifted to jimmy open the poorly-locked door. In two or three quick movements, he had the wooden barrier popped open, revealing the world of interesting things within.

Or... well, it wasn't all that interesting, really. Cleaning supplies, mostly, and some clay jars filled with who-knew-what. She began to back away from the door--but felt a hand press against the small of her back, pushing her forward.

"H-Hey! Knock it off," she cried, squirming against the stronger boy as terror gripped her throat. "You guys--!"

She stumbled forward at a sudden shove. Her world went dark as the door slammed shut, accompanied by uproarious laughter from the small gang of Weyrbrats.

"Have a good break, Haely!"

"N-No, wait! Come back!"

Silence was her response. Her breath came more quickly in the darkness, and she felt her heart racing with fear as she tried to fumble for the door. When her hands clutched the knob, she felt a brief moment of hope--which was promptly shattered when the door remained well and truly stuck. Tears poured down her cheeks as she struggled--the others must have put something in the way to block the door from opening again--and she screamed piteously for help as her body began to shake.

She hated the dark. She hated the dark.

"F-Feran," she sobbed, stumbling away from the door and falling into the buckets that were neatly stacked on the floor. "Feran!"

The gold, however, was already on the wing, eyes bright and red with fury. Her person was in trouble, and she was already on the hunt for anyone who could help. With a shriek, she flung herself into the Dining Hall where a number of Riders and Weyrfolk were still finishing their lunches. She alighted in front of one person in particular, landing rather ungracefully in what was left of their meal, and began to chitter and spit her anger at her chosen 'helper.'

By the time Az’riel wandered into the dining hall, the place was sufficiently uncluttered that he decided he could go without the extra hassle of carrying his meal up to his weyr. Noisy spaces bothered him, particularly the ones that were also crowded, but by now most of the lunch rush had cleared out, and the conversation and chatter were down to a low buzz - easily relegated to the background, at least for a little while, and he didn’t intend to be here long.

Fetching himself a redfruit and a couple of meatrolls, he ducked into a quiet corner and tucked hastily into his food, eager to get the task over with and regretting the lack of reading material to-hand. He had a number of records and old journals hidden away in his room, pilfered from the Weyr’s archives (to be returned and exchanged for new material when finished, of course), and he’d long grown accustomed to reading his way through his meals. This eating business was dreadfully dull otherwise, but he quickly quashed that line of thought, scolding himself for having grown so spoiled; he could endure lunchtime without any diversions, it would hardly be the death of him.

Though it seemed one of the Weyr’s abundant firelizards had other ideas, for no sooner had he polished off his fruit than a dusky and chittering bronze planted itself squarely over his plate, hissing and spitting and obviously very irate. Except – no, she wasn’t a bronze at all, he realized, leaning back on the bench and staring incredulously at his visitor; underneath that darker shade was bright, unmistakable gold.

“…Can I help you?”
Bemused, and a little irritated – this had not been the sort of diversion he’d had in mind – he scowled down at the intruder even as he grudgingly decided she seemed more distressed than annoyed. Something was wrong, and it seemed he’d been recruited to put it to rights. Darting a mournful glance at the trampled meatrolls – he had no intention of eating them now, no matter how clean she appeared to be – the copperrider huffed out a quiet sigh and sat forward. Bringing his hands up and folding them primly atop the table, he schooled his expression into something polite but appropriately grave, the very picture of judiciousness.
“What is it you require?”

A challenging but ultimately fruitful conversation followed, if you could call it that. Having secured his attention, though, the little ‘lizard got her point across easily enough, and soon after being coaxed away from his table he found himself standing before a supply closet. The rather artful arrangement of a chair brought in from the Hall, and a stool likely looted from elsewhere in the caverns, had been used to jam the door firmly shut, and his puzzled frown pinched into a proper scowl. He suspected he knew where this was going, and was not at all encouraged by the muffled shouts he could hear once he drew closer. Hastily clearing the exit, he stepped back as he drew the door open, unsure how quick the occupant was likely to be in their escape and happy to avoid a potential collision – whoever was in there certainly sounded panicked. He couldn’t help leaning forward, though, to peer curiously inside, eager to identify the victim of what seemed a very cruel prank; faranth, but he hoped there wouldn’t be any injuries. It seemed a bit much to hope there wouldn’t be any tears.
"Is everything all right?"

As she sobbed to herself in her dismay, trying to extract herself from the buckets she had fallen into, she heard footsteps approaching. A short time later, Feran had appeared to wrap herself around the girl's shoulders. The gold cooed softly, eyes fading in intensity as she soothed the child and waited patiently for the man she had chosen to open the door. Fortunately, it wasn't long before light spilled into the small storeroom to reveal her sad fate.

"N-No," Haely sobbed in response to his question, bringing a sleeve up to wipe her face as she slowly got to her feet. Now that she could see, the task was considerably easier--but no less humiliating. Her usual bombastic attitude very much cowed by the cruelty of her peers, she stood before the man with shoulders hunched and eyes downcast.

"Thanks for helpin'," she muttered, wiping her eyes once more. "Th-they shut me in. They always d-do mean things, but that was th-the worst."

Feran let out a chirp at this, tail flicking in aggravation as she pressed her small head against her Person's cheek. Haely's hand moved almost automatically to pet the gold, even as a sigh escaped her lips. A quick flicker of a half-formed image fluttered through her mind--shoulder knots, signifying Rider status--and she blinked away her tears as she looked up curiously.

Sure enough, the man who had come to rescue her was a Rider. For a moment, she was torn between mortification at having been found in such a pitiful state by an honest-to-Faranth Rider and deep gratitude at the opportunity to get to talk to one up close and personal. Before too long, however, she quickly decided on the latter.

"M'name's Haelyea," she chirped, extending a hand up to the considerably taller man even though tear stains remained on her cheeks. "My mom's a greyrider. I'm a weyrbrat, but I'll be a Candidate soon! Who's your dragon?"

Oh, but there was sobbing. What in the world was he supposed to do with that?
Smile at her, advised Liyanth from out in the ‘bowl, tone as fond as it was exasperated. She’s a child, not a wherry. ‘Use your words,’ he almost added, but Az’riel was panicked enough as it was – something so playful (or as Az’riel would interpret it, condescending) would only make matters worse.

Haelya likely wouldn’t know it, but the copperrider was thoroughly stumped – his automatic response, in such situations, was to lock away absolutely everything, and fix his expression so that it was inscrutable as possible. Unfortunately, inscrutable also meant cold, and he could hardly paint a very reassuring picture, standing stiff in the doorway with a blank look on his face. Nevertheless, he’d at least have offered a hand to help her up, had he not been so flummoxed by the tears; as she extricated herself from a mass of buckets and cleaning supplies, he scolded himself for his slow response. She did make a rather sad picture, then, shoulders hunched and eyes on the floor, and he felt his brows pinch together in a frown.

Thanks for helpin’.
“You’re most welcome,” he answered diplomatically; that social cue was one he was well-conditioned to respond to.
Th-they shut me in…
His scowl grew more pronounced, as she took him through the abridged version of her tale, but after a pointed mental nudge from Liyanth he worked to smooth his expression back into something cheerier – or at least less thunderous. He’d been fortunate, growing up, that he’d had access to sufficient resources to keep him at his parents’ homestead. There had been other children there too, of course, some of them relatives and others the children of farmers and beastcrafters – none had been friends, and even the adults had sometimes not responded well to him. He knew some of the ‘mean things’ she referred to from personal experience, but not as many as he likely would have had he gone to the Harper Hall to be schooled. He’d rarely been without an escape route, between the stables and the fields, and more often than not he’d had a veritable pack of canines to keep him company – and to keep an eye on him. Nevertheless, he knew perfectly well that children were as capable of cruelty as their parents, and Haelya’s distress was gradually melting the chilly persona he’d fallen back on.

If he had anything to say about it, the weyrbrats responsible would be hunted down and punished.
I don’t think you have anything to say about it.
If you’re not going to say anything helpful, kindly refrain from saying anything at all.
Her firelizard, at least, looked to be seething; perhaps she’d see fit to mete out some justice if the opportunity arose.

Before he could think of anything appropriately… heartening to say to her, however, the young lady seemed to bounce straight back from her troubles, and she offered him her hand with a bright enthusiasm that had his eyebrows arching towards his hairline – and if he jumped back just a hair, startled at the abrupt change, hopefully she wouldn’t notice. Moving to accept the handshake, he bowed his head with the same gravity he’d have expressed were he being introduced to an adult.
“I am Az’riel, formerly from Keroon. My dragon is Liyanth-” debating whether to identify him as a beryllium, which was his preferred option, or the more informal ‘copper’, which Liyanth was always insisting was less pretentious, he was suddenly struck with inspiration. She seemed quite enthusiastic about Candidacy, and her first question had been about Liyanth. Rocking back on his heels, trying not to look pleased with himself, he tentatively suggested:
“Would you like to meet him?”

He was a bit of a scary man, Haely decided as the man's stoic mask of a face fluttered briefly through emotions that looked something like annoyance and anger--but he was a Rider, and Riders were always good people. As a matter of fact, even if her fellow Weyrbrats were often a bunch of jerks, she had never seen a Rider she could flat-out describe as "jerk." Some of the Weyrlings, maybe... Still, he talked to her like he would talk to an adult, and that earned the man infinite brownie points.

After she had properly introduced herself, however, the man's face appeared to lighten after a moment of pure confusion. Clearly, he hadn't expected her to try and put her best foot forward after her ordeal--but, then, he didn't know her very well.

"Ohhh," she breathed, biting her lip as she tried to keep her smile from reaching her ears. He'd offered to let her meet his dragon. Liyanth. Liyanth, Liyanth, Liyaaannnthhhhhh. Feran snorted at her, more amused than annoyed by her person's obsession with dragonkind.

"I would love to! If you're not busy, of course, Mr. Az'riel," she finally replied, practically bouncing on the tips of her toes with barely-contained excitement. "I'm sure he's--he, right? Liyanth sounds like a boy's name--anyway, I'm sure he's a wonderful dragon!"

Feran cheeped her agreement from the girl's shoulders, eyes finally calming into comfortable greens and blues. She was eager to see the creature that had so captivated her Person's rampaging imagination--and decide whether or not her larger 'cousin' was worth all the fuss.

His offer went over even better than he’d hoped – if only all of his ventures were met with such resounding success! Allowing a hint of smugness to temper his otherwise severe expression, he smiled softly, pleased at the weyrbrat’s obvious delight. He felt Liyanth’s distant amusement and resolutely ignored it – he wasn’t anything near as empathetic and personable as the copper, but he managed well enough, when left to his own devices. After a moment, though, he found himself unable to resist a quick comment:
You’ll recall I survived twenty-four turns without you around to dull my temperament.
The copper responded with evident good-humor; he knew better than to take such acerbic comments at face-value.
Oh, just bring her out here so I can say hello, would you? He let the comment stand for a moment, before adding: That was nicely done. Az’riel almost never had occasion to interact with the Weyr’s younger residents, and Liyanth knew he’d felt very out of his depth; it could hardly hurt, to try and bolster the man’s newfound confidence.

... If you’re not busy, of course, Mr. Az’riel…
“Certainly not – in fact, lunch was a shorter affair than I’d anticipated, on account of your little friend there,” he assured her, with a little nod at Feran. Turning back towards the dining hall, he made for the exit – but slowly, to be sure she was following, and that she wouldn’t be waylaid by any of her peers. He wouldn’t be surprised to discover that at least one other weyrbrat was lingering nearby, hoping to see the outcome of their little prank.

Liyanth ‘sounded’ male, did it? Well, she wasn’t wrong; quirking an eyebrow, mildly amused, he nodded.
“I happen to think he’s brilliant,” he confided with a small – but very heartfelt – smile. “He makes for much more pleasant company, too, and I’m sure he’d be happy to have a chat with you before afternoon drills.” Of the two of them, his dragon was the better-liked by far, and Az was sure it wouldn't be any different with Haely. He had never minded, though – he was, in fact, quite grateful that there was now an aspect of himself that others found more than simply ‘tolerable’. There were Vaioans who were happy to spend some time in Liyanth’s company, and that was useful, even if it sometimes brought Az’riel’s own failings into sharp relief.

The little gold cheeped, following her human’s pronouncement, and as he ducked around the hearth and out the door, he was reminded that – despite how well she’d communicated, earlier – a proper introduction had been beyond both of them.
“And what’s her name, then?”
Darting a glance along the weyrbowl wall, he spotted Liyanth reclining on the warm stone a few dozen yards away; it wasn’t properly summer, yet, but there was plenty of sunshine, and the copper had been delighted at the chance to soak up some rays.

"Oh--I haven't gotten to talk to very many dragons," Haely replied, her smile practically reaching her ears as she followed the tall man toward the 'Bowl. "I've talked to a baby-baby Graphite, and a young Grey lady, but most of the adults don't want to talk to me! I know a lot of 'em only talk to their Riders, because they've got a special bond," she continued, babbling away as she tried to impress the Rider with her super-secret dragon knowledge.

"Your Liyanth sounds very friendly, though! I hope he likes me--I'm sure I'll like him!" The last she added with another exceedingly bright smile, her voice still almost startlingly chipper despite the obvious puffiness that lingered around her eyes.

When Az'riel asked for her gold's name, however, she blinked as her smile suddenly disappeared. Had she forgotten to introduce Feran? She had! Oh, that was terribly rude! Feran gave a slight jerk of her chin at this thought, pretending to be more put out than she actually was--though the action did little more than make Haely giggle at the gold's false offense.

"Oh! Sorry, I totally forgot. This here is Feran! She's almost two Turns old, and she's my bestest best friend in the whole wide world," she said, voice laden with affection as she carefully removed the 'lizard from around her shoulders to give the beast a warm hug in slender arms. Feran hung awkwardly there, back legs and tail dangling freely as she allowed herself to be embraced. Her eyes whirled amused greens and warm blues, and she let out a conversational sort of 'c'est la vie' cheep toward Az'riel as her girl held her warmly.

"My mama got her for me for my birthday when I was ten. I think she thought she'd be a bronze watchdog, but she came out so much better than that! I wanted to name her Faranth, but ma said I couldn't," she added in a low, conspiratorial voice, narrowing her eyes at the Rider. "Feran's how I used to say it as a little kid, so I figured it was close 'nuff."

…I haven’t gotten to talk to very many dragons.
“No?” As a weyrbrat, he’d have thought she’d have plenty of opportunities – but then, he’d first come to the Weyr at age twenty-four, so he didn’t really have any idea what it was like growing up in one. It would explain her enthusiasm, to have been brought up surrounded by dragons but effectively isolated from them.

…most of the adults don’t want to talk to me.
He hmmed, and to his own ears it sounded sympathetic and a bit ponderous.
“That’s true – many dragons won’t reach out to anyone they don’t know well. I think you’ll find Liyanth’s a bit more sociable, though.” The copper had to be, really, to make up for Az’riel’s singular lack of talent. He did all right in fairly formal settings, but small talk often required a herculean effort to muddle through. Haelya didn't seem to mind - or even notice - his somewhat stilted efforts, though, and so despite being rather out of his depth he was less uncomfortable than he might have expected.

Glancing to the side, he saw that Fera was striking quite the haughty pose – but Haelya’s laughter indicated it was all in good fun. The little gold certainly accepted the cuddling that followed with good grace, and he ducked his head in response to her little cheep, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. One did what one had to for those under their care, even when one was a firelizard, and it was clear Feran took her responsibilities seriously.
“I had thought her a bronze, at first,” he admitted, not without an apologetic grimace for the gold’s sake. “Though it was only a moment before I realized my mistake. She's quite a striking little queen.”

He nodded as appropriate, when the weyrbrat went on to explain her firelizards’ namesake, but by the time she’d finished they were near enough for Liyanth to join in the conversation – and he did so with enthusiasm.
What a fitting name! And you told my rider yours was Haelya?
He was still a dozen or so yards away, curled up and relaxing against the weyrbowl wall, but he lifted his head and rumbled a warm greeting now that the humans were close enough to appreciate it. Tail swishing to and fro as he tracked their approach, he hunched his shoulders and hunkered down, trying to make himself appear smaller; if she’d been around mostly weyrlings before, she might not appreciate him towering over her. Belatedly, despite it being perfectly obvious, he tacked on:
I am Liyanth!

"Yeah?" Haely replied as the man talked a bit about Liyanth's sociability, her grin broadening as she hugged her firelizard warmly. "I don't think I've never ever seen a copper up close before. I'm excited ta talk to him!"

She giggled at his initial assessment of her gold--just about everyone took her for a bronze, at first--before nodding in agreement when he called her a fine little queen. Truly, Feran was everything she ever could have asked for in a companion: warm, affectionate, protective, and incredibly smart. She couldn't honestly imagine her life without the 'lizard at this point, even without considering the mental connection they shared.

Just as she was beginning to become lost in her thoughts again, however, she jerked her head up with surprise when a voice very different from her own rang out in her mind. She blinked twice as Feran peeped and squirmed out of her arms to wing over and give the large copper a proper greeting.

Honestly, she hadn't been prepared for the sheer bigness of the dragon up-close, even though it was clear he was trying his best to make himself look less imposing. While Feran was eager enough to engage with the friendly beast, Haely found herself suddenly rather shy. On impulse, she shuffled to stand slightly behind Az'riel, peering around the man's legs to gawk at the copper quietly.

"H-Hi," she finally muttered on Feran's gentle urging, drinking in the sight of the dragon curiously. He was so different from her mother's grey! "Yeah, m-my name's Haelyea. Um, my mom's a greyrider," she continued, fumbling with her words as she tried to figure out exactly what a stranger-dragon might want to know about her.

Still, despite her nervousness, she couldn't keep the smile off her face. She was actually talking with a dragon! A copper dragon!

Haelya lapsed into silence for a while, but it didn’t seem uncomfortable, so Az let it stand. He could only make it worse, really, by drawing attention to it, and he had no idea what topic of conversation he could offer up that might interest a child. Thank faranth for Liyanth.

The copper, delighted at Feran’s friendliness, dipped his head further down and offered the little gold a croon as the party finally reached him, eyes shimmering blue. Seeing that Haely had ducked behind his rider, apparently nervous, he kept his attention on the firelizard, looking deliberately away from the humans. Excited as he was to meet her, he suspected any added scrutiny would have her feeling shyer still. And Az’riel could handle it – he was curious, in fact, to see how his rider would respond to being used as a human shield.

Az was, predictably, puzzled. Ducking his head, he leaned forward to peer down at the abruptly bashful weyrbrat, and resisted the impulse to shuffle away. He preferred to maintain a certain bubble of personal space, but the child wouldn't know that, and he might upset her by recoiling from the unexpected proximity. Not to mention it would be dreadfully embarrassing, to be seen flinching away from a weyrbrat - Liyanth's amused scrutiny hadn't wavered, since he'd initially discovered Haelya trapped in the storeroom, and Faranth forbid he should give the copper any more ammunition. Anyway, he couldn’t imagine what the problem might be, and found himself at a loss. Arcing an eyebrow inquisitively, he was relieved when she recovered before he could formulate a proper question.

She seemed endearingly awestruck, and Liyanth warbled in welcome, setting his chin gently on the ground so she could have a closer look at him if she wanted.
It’s nice to meet you. And you! The latter was directed at Feran, and he darted a pointed and amused glance at Az’riel – children were easy to talk to! Deciding to risk putting him on the defensive, he added:
You see, Mine? Nothing to be nervous about.
His rider snorted scornfully, but said nothing, content to fade into the background now that Haelya was preoccupied with Liyanth. His dragon's preposterous theories weren't worth dignifying with a response. Folding his hands behind his back, his gaze slid out towards the weyrbowl, observing the goings-on of Vaioa at lunchtime.

A greyrider? Perhaps I know her, he offered, intrigued. Do you think you might be a rider one day, too? You look almost old enough to Stand. Most, but not all, weyrbrats went on to Candidacy, and he’d guess that’s where Haelya was headed as well. He was certainly no Searchrider, but it would be nice to see a familiar face on the Sands one day – have some specific to root for.
