Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The Sarcastic One
Cari had been debating for a turn and a half on the prospect of obtaining a wher. The only two she'd had actual interaction with were Rohsk and Tyrsk, and she had adored both. She couldn't say the same about the latter's handler, but the wher himself had been wonderful and so very helpful in the infirmary. Her firelizard fair tried, bless them, but there was a limit to what they could do to help.

It was for that reason that Cari took notice when the rogue whers were brought into the Hold with rumors that they would be sold and bonded to new handlers. She had only enough time to hurriedly tell S'von her intentions before she rushed off to meet with Jerund. The moment he approved her to adopt, she nearly shot from her chair to run off and see the whers. He advised which were the mildest, and would therefore make the best healers, and then she set off to where the cages were.

The second she emerged in the room where they were kept, her heart sank. It hurt to see so many of them locked away, some so scarred and complacent she worried they wouldn't survive. She'd left her entire fair behind today, even chasing Reia away, so as not to overwhelm the whers. Now, standing there alone, she almost wished she had one of them there to give her comfort.

Drawing a breath, she started down the aisle of cages. There was a bronze so wild it snarled as she passed, a blue with stunning coloring but missing one of his legs (her heart squeezed and she almost approached him before she forced herself to keep walking--he was not one of the ones Jerund had mentioned), and a couple of browns that cowered in the back of their cages.

A mild temperament were not enough to be a healer, and she was beginning to lose hope when she noticed a brown watching her blankly. He was a handsome creature, marked with stripes of dark brown, sand, orange, and white. His belly was white, as well as his wings. Something seemed odd about them, shriveled or somehow disfigured. In fact, the wher himself seemed unusually small and lean considering the lifestyle he had had. She paused, turning toward him as his nostrils flared.

Pain.

She jerked, startled by the voice in her head. She'd gotten used to it with Moryth, but she certainly hadn't expected the wher to address her so openly. It took her a moment to gather her thoughts. "Pain...?" she ventured, taking a step closer to his cage. He wasn't aggressive, like some of the others--just seemed a little annoyed with his situation. As far as she could tell, he didn't seem to have any wounds like the others. Was he in pain somewhere?

Girl stop pain. Smell root.

Cari blinked in surprise, glancing down at her hands. She had scrubbed thoroughly, sure she'd gotten the scent of redwort off her skin. She paused as she realized what he said. Not only did he know the smell of the herb, he recognized what it was. It wasn't possible... was it? "Were... Were you a healer?" she asked, moving another step closer.

His reaction was a snort of disdain, as if he was offended she would even ask such a thing. Rather than answer, he turned around, putting his rump to the healer, and sat down.

Cari almost laughed, recognizing the slight. The only whers she'd met had been friendly and eager for attention. This one was apparently the opposite. "I'm a healer. I've been... looking for an assistant. A wher that can help me. Would you be interested?" she inquired.

No.

"No?" She frowned, folding her arms across her chest and moving right up next to his cage. "You have the training, I can tell you do. You'd rather stay in here?"

He shot her a look over his shoulder and snorted again. No verbal response.

She scoffed, shaking her head. "You would honestly rather stay in here, locked in this cage, than help me save lives? If you were a healer, like I'm sure you were, you would want to help." She paused and crouched, so she was more at eye level with him. "I know you probably miss your handler... but would they really want you trapped in here, when you could be out there helping people?"

The wher huffed and adjusted his position so he was facing her ever-so-slightly. Girl not handler. Girl not know wher.

Shells, he could tell that? She put her best stern face on, pulling on her experience with getting Ranic's lazy butt into gear. "You're right. I'm not a handler--I'm a healer. I'm not looking for a wher to... to fight for me or carry rocks around a mine. I'm looking for a partner. Someone that can teach me as much as I teach them. But I guess that's not you." She pushed herself to her feet and turned away.

The wher was silent for a moment, debating her proposition. Go, he finally grunted.

Stifling a sound of annoyance (fighting the disappointment clawing at her), she shook her head. "Fine. I'm leaving."

Will go.

She paused, wiping the surprise from her face, and then turned back to face him. The brown was on his feet again, nosing at the latch. "You'll... You want to come with me?"

The wher gazed at her for a moment and then snorted, dipping his head.

Cari fought back the elation, hurrying to the nearest handler to pay for her new companion. Gathering up the new gear she was given, she moved back to the brown's cage and carefully unlocked it. She opened the door, stepping back so he could move into the open.

"Here. It's daytime, so you'll need these." She bent down, goggles in hand, and froze as a mind brushed over hers. It wasn't like bonding with her firelizards--this one was aware, intelligent, and still rather grumpy at the situation.

Carisk, he supplied after a moment.

Grinning, Cari fitted the goggles over Carisk's head and then gently rubbed her hand over his headknobs. He grunted, huffing in tolerance, but she felt the faintest tinge of enjoyment wash over her. She finally had a wher of her own.

"Come on. There's someone I want you to meet."

The Viridian Mistress
Honestly, S’von was pretty clueless about whers. They could be healers, miners, fighters, and their colors were similar-but-different to dragons. (Male garnets? No, reds, and they were friendly? He’d heard that greens were culled at birth, but if they were, why did there seem to be so many at Vaioa?) He wasn’t quite sure why they made good healers, when they seemed to have such vicious temperaments.

Still, Cari had mentioned it offhand a few times, and he knew that she worked with a wherhandler at the infirmary. But she’d gone running off earlier to look at the bandit whers, and he couldn’t deny that it made him nervous. Could she end up with a wild, violent beast, or one that was too scarred and scared to ever make a good partner?

These thoughts went through the grayrider’s head as he made his way down to the weyrbowl, on foot. He wasn’t sure what this new wher would be like, but a gray dragon with a snarky streak might be a bit too much for him to handle right away. Although, the fact that all six of their combined fire lizards were climbing on him or flying around him might be even more terrifying. Moryth still watched from their ledge, though, aiding him with her dragon’s eye view of the hold.

There.

Where?

With a small huff, the gray shared her vision with him for a moment. A brown, a gorgeous brown at that, was following his weyrmate out of Vaioa Hold. His own eyes locked on to the new handler pair as Moryth withdrew her sight.

“Cari!” he called when she was within shouting distance, half-jogging to her. He wasn’t quite sure what to do about the newest member of their group (family?) though. Whers weren’t dragons, but shouldn’t he at least acknowledge the brown? He didn’t know his name yet, though, so he settled for a simple, “Hello there.”
