Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

J'zec wasn't about to admit to his new temporary companion how strange it was for him to actually be sitting down to a meal with another person. Certainly he'd seated himself at others' tables before and engaged them in conversation, but to enter the hall and eat with one person on purpose was something of a novelty. But Grumpy Drudge didn't need to know that. For all she knew, this was a normal daily occurrence for him. Routine even. After all, she had no way of knowing how thoroughly he despised following patterns.

As she gathered her food, sticking closer to him than he thought was really necessary (though who was he to complain? She was young, sure, but she was still female), he eyed the unoccupied tables. Only one was completely vacant and it chafed for him to realize he had sat there the night before. He was partly inclined to march straight past it and into the hall, but he figured it was better to be more civilized. Particularly since he had company.

Stifling a little shudder, he approached the table and pointedly circled around it so that he was at least sitting on the other side. It still made him twitch a little, but he would tolerate it this once. As soon as Elmi had seated herself as well, he began calmly cutting his meat.

"So what brings you to Vaioa Weyr?" he asked conversationally. He had a hunch, based on the way she had narrowed her eyes at his knots, that she wasn't familiar with the culture. That meant that not only was she holdbred, but relatively new to Weyr life in general. A transfer, like him. "Hoping to Impress a dragon or wher? I could always present you to Riliath. He's a good judge of character--he'll tell you if you have the potential."

No.

"He's agreed to meet you."

Stop changing my words!

"Seems somewhat excited, actually."

He selected an empty table, which suited her just fine; ducking around him, after he claimed a seat, she tucked herself in on the other side and eyed him over the top of her klah. He started in on his meal right away, but she took her time cutting up the redfruit. She found she was hungrier, now, with food right in front of her, but she was still feeling a bit fussy.

So what brings you to Vaioa Weyr?
She hadn’t admitted to him she was new, had she? And it wasn’t as though someone else could have clued him in – she must’ve given herself away, somehow. Frowning, irritated with herself more than him, she was completely unprepared for his next question.
“Hoping to-?”
She took a fortifying gulp of klah, glaring up at him over the rim.
“Hardly.” There was no way he’d mistaken her for a Candidate, though there were quite a few that did chores in the lowers caverns. She wasn’t sure she approved of the practice – she uncharitably, and not completely privately, thought most of them were useless – but apparently it was part of their 'curriculum'. There wasn’t much they could hurt, at least, though a few of them had proven rather inspired mischief makers, over the past few weeks.

But that was nothing to do with her transfer.
“I’m here because my brother went and got himself Searched, actually.” Deciding her redfruit was in acceptably small pieces, she popped one in her mouth and chewed thoughtfully. She hadn’t admitted to Jam how she’d found out about his Impression so quickly, though he’d no doubt guessed. There didn’t seem to be a reason not to tell the dragonrider about it, though.
“I had Kynes spying on the hatchings," she admitted cavalierly, dabbing her juice-stained fingers on a nearby napkin. "Didn’t think he’d stick around long enough to catch a dragon’s eye, but I was wrong. I wanted a change of scenery, so I caught a ride with the first Vaioan I could find.”

Tucking into her meatrolls, finally, she eyed him with renewed suspicion when he suggested introducing her to his dragon. He hadn’t even introduced himself properly, and he seemed… smug about the offer, somehow. She was fairly certain she was missing something. An inside joke, perhaps – she found herself hoping it wasn’t at her expense, though normally she wouldn’t have cared a whit. Why had she agreed to this, again?

But perhaps there was a clue in there – it was only a few colors that went out on Search, usually, wasn’t it? And J’zec had just given away his dragon’s gender.
“Is he a… blue, then?”
It had been a blue that’d picked Jam out, at that small seahold. Or that’s what he’d said in one of his letters – two years ago, now. It had taken her that long to get out of sharding Telgar. The thought soured her expression, but for once her dinner companion wasn’t the cause.

From the frown his dinner companion gave, it was clear his hunch had been correct. It also seemed she wasn't too happy that he had guessed correctly, so he opted to clue her in. "The knots," he explained, tapping a hand to his. "Weyrfolk glance. Your gaze lingered." And she probably still didn't know what they meant, aside from rider. Best not to bring that up, though.

Her reaction to candidacy seemed to imply she was scornful of the whole thing. J'zec felt an eyebrow creep upwards, but he forced himself to hold his tongue. For the first time in her company, he felt the need to be defensive. "Not a fan of riders?" He kept his tone neutral, but he could feel Riliath's annoyance in the back of his mind. "Not the best company to keep, in that case."

Some light was shed on this situation, when she admitted she had followed her brother to the Weyr. Ahhhh. So that's why she doesn't like us. Probably feels like we stole her brother or something. He listened attentively as she explained. Kynes? Ah, that had to be the bronze hellion's name. He took a mental note of that. It was also clear her brother had, in fact, impressed. Which meant... "Jasper weyrling?" he guessed. Another clue to her identity stored away.

You could just ask.

He stifled a snort. Where was the fun in that?

He lifted his klah to take a sip and nearly choked on it as she guessed the color of his dragon. Swallowing, he set the cup down only for a deep, full-chested laugh to emerge. It wasn't her he laughed at, but Riliath's sputtering outrage. Apparently he had been right she didn't know what color his knots indicated either.

BLUE?

There's no way she could know, Ril.

Bring her out here right now! I'll show her blue!

Once J'zec had his humor under control, he turned a grin toward Elmi. "My dragon would like to set the record straight. He's waiting outside," he stated, gesturing to the exit. He paused before standing and gently seizing her wrist to bodily tow her outside.

Riliath lurked outside, head craning to see into the hall. Only when he saw J'zec approaching did he step back and raise himself to his full grandeur, head held high and angled to look down at them regally.

J'zec paused before the copper, releasing his prisoner, and turned to her with a smirk. The only introduction he offered was a simple, "Not blue."

Worse than guessing she was new to the Weyr was that he then went on to explain how he’d figured it out – not that she hadn’t been curious, but people didn’t usually pay such close attention to her. It was irritating. Obviously she needed to be more discreet than usual, around this person – and so, with a bit of effort, she shrugged off his observation with apparent nonchalance.
“Got here a few weeks ago. Haven’t had an abundance of free time to learn the particulars.”

His next comment was a bit sharper, and it pulled her focus away from the redfruit she was still fussing with. She’d started to let her guard down, a bit, and his tone had her wondering whether that had been a mistake – until she realized the cause for it. Hurt his feelings, had she? Her wary expression melted back into something blander, though now there was a hint of mischief around the edges.
Not a fan of riders?
“Haven’t known many of em. Don’t seem all that different from Holders, though, to tell you the truth.” It wasn’t precisely true, but she wondered what he’d make of a comment like that. The culture she’d encountered at Vaioa was fairly distinct from that of her former home, of course, but in terms of her work… Well, drudgery here had proven much the same as at Telgar. She had yet to come across any significant differences, in terms of her own responsibilities and routine.

Jasper weyrling?
“Mhm.” Starting in on one of the meatrolls, she considered whether or not she should be any more specific than that. They seemed to be dancing around the issue of identity – playing some ridiculous game of deductive reasoning – and mentioning so much as Davoth’s color would give Jam’s identity away for sure. The only other black in the class had Impressed to a woman – or at least, she thought he had. Identifying Jam, though, wouldn't necessarily tell him anything about her, and she couldn't imagine he'd be invested enough in the mystery to track down her brother after the fact. Regardless, there was no reason to make things easy for the persnickety bluerider...

Or maybe not a bluerider. Not only had her assumption (apparently) been wrong, it seemed to have touched some sort of nerve. Bewildered at J’zec’s sudden mirth, she sat back from the table and eyed him suspiciously. Yes, all right, it had been a stab in the dark – but surely it couldn’t be that funny. She had thick skin, was irritated but mostly unfazed to be a source of amusement, but this seemed… excessive. Even after he’d gotten himself under control, though, it seemed no explanation was forthcoming.

My dragon would like to set the record straight.
She was, perhaps, even more confused by this declaration – not surprised that the dragon was nearby, but that the introduction J’zec had hinted at was apparently going to happen immediately. Stunned, she could do little more than glower as he took hold of her wrist, though her curiosity was such that she allowed herself to be towed outside relatively tamely. He was lucky Kynes had abandoned them for the time being – J’zec might just have earned himself a bite, otherwise.

The dragon that awaited them in the bowl was, as his rider explained rather redundantly, decidedly not blue. He was, perhaps, the largest dragon she’d yet seen up close – certainly the biggest she’d been introduced to. And faranth, but he was preening.
“Well. Apparently not.”
Her nonplussed expression threatened to become a smirk, and she craned her head back to try and get a proper look at the copper. With the pose he'd struck, though, it was difficult to see around his legs and chest.
“From this angle, though, I gotta say he’s not as handsome as my brother's.” While the comment had been directed at J’zec, it was more for Riliath’s benefit, and after a moment she addressed the copper more directly:
“If you want me to reevaluate, you’ll have to come down here where I can see you proper. You’re a great looming shadow, now the sun’s gone down. Bit melodramatic, really.” The last was said very mildly - ponderously, even, as she stared up at him, rocking back on her heels and settling her hands on her hips.

Now that J'zec knew the grumpy drudge's game, he wasn't as fazed by her off-handed comment about riders and holders being similar. He would've laughed, even, had he been so inclined. He'd play her game, though. Instead, he offered a small grunt. "I'd be offended if I hadn't previously been a holder myself. Guess that's a fair enough judgement, since most of us come from other places," he said idly. If she wanted to rile him, she'd have to work harder than that.

His mouth crooked slightly when she confirmed her brother as a Jasper weyrling, but she offered nothing further to identify him. If he didn't know any better, he'd think she was being intentionally vague. Perhaps she was enjoying the mystery as much as he was. Then again, her complete show of disinterest could've been genuine and she just didn't care enough to find out more about him. But then why had she hazarded a guess about his dragon's color...?

He was still ruminating on that point as he stood beside Riliath's massive, posing figure. With his arms folded, his smirk still in place, he watched the expression cross Elmi's face. It was subtle, like her glance toward his knots, but he caught the humor there, however brief it was.

His smirk morphed into a full grin at her words and he chuckled as Riliath uttered a disbelieving huff. "Well now, I do believe you've offended him," he remarked, although his tone implied he wasn't all that concerned about it. Really, the copper was constantly in a mood over something or other.

Riliath, however, took Elmi's words to heart. A weyrling more handsome than me?! he demanded, aghast at the very thought. He didn't even notice his rider stuffing his fist against his mouth to hold in a laugh.

The look J'zec shot Elmi was amused, intrigued, and fairly impressed. In just seconds, she had figured out Riliath's measure and knew exactly how to play him. It was an interesting trait to possess. He wondered if it extended to people, or if the copper's obvious air of superiority was what truly gave it away.

Reevaluate?! As if I need this pathetic human's approval! the copper cried, outraged, even as he lowered his massive head and angled it so one large orange eye could stare at her. What say you now, tiny human? he inquired haughtily.

J'zec hid his surprise as best he could, watching the proceedings with interest. The copper had lowered himself so his belly touched the ground and his full body was now visible to the drudge. The behavior was different, but he so rarely spoke to another human that J'zec found himself scrutinizing Elmi once more. There was something about this girl... He couldn't quite put his finger on it. She was definitely unique.

… I do believe you’ve offended him.
“I must be on a roll this evening,” she muttered with a nod, eyeing the apparently-sincerely offended copper. What a drama queen. These two made quite a pair – she’d been out here thirty seconds and had already decided they deserved each other. That J’zec had to physically hold back his laughter had her own expression turning smug, and she gave in to a small smile.

“Sorry, boots, but what the fardle am I supposed to make of you from all the way down here?”
That, or perhaps just her earlier comments, seemed to do the trick – bellowing his outrage, he brought his head down to eye-level, blustering all the while. In seconds, one large eye was peering down at her; it was easily the size of her head.
What say you now, tiny human?
The comment on her height wasn’t new – but for once, she figured the commenter had a perfectly legitimate excuse for bringing it up.
“Yeah, yeah, I’m short. Incredible, that you noticed.” She muttered, rocking back on her heels and making a show of examining him. Tilting her head back forth, hmming hawwing, squinting her eyes.

“Well, you know what? You’re not half bad.” She conceded, offering him a toothy and sharp-edged grin. “It’s nice to meet you,” she added, much more sincerely. And he was rather handsome, though she was still partial to her brother’s Davoth. She couldn’t help wondering what it’d be like having a dragon this size ferry her around. The only flight she’d ever taken had been on a green, and a very… energetic one, at that. She didn’t suppose she’d ever have a chance to find out, though she did consider hitching that ride with Hollinth a win – Jam had come to the Weyr on horseback. He’d been the one to Impress, but she’d flown sooner than him.

Glancing back at J’zec, her eyebrows arched towards her hairline in a mute now what?. She could tell him he was right – Riliath was absolutely not a blue, but that’d be terribly redundant, at this point. She was pleased Kynes had kept his distance, anyway. She’d riled the copper up perfectly well without her little bronze shaffit showing up and being is mean self.

Whether Riliath appreciated the scrutiny or not was a mystery even to J'zec. The copper's only response to Elmi's comment was to huff loudly and turn his head away, back toward his ledge above. The rider rolled his eyes again, shaking his head as he met Elmi's gaze. He offered little more than his dragon, shrugging slightly and raising an arm to gesture back toward the dining hall to indicate they should conclude their meal (nevermind he'd already inhaled most of his).

Riliath seemed to have different plans for him. Your stomach has silenced its insufferable complaining. Now return to our weyr and oil me, he demanded.

Do you want to try and work a please in there? J'zec replied wryly.

No. I do not. Come or I will carry you off in my claws.

Hold your sharding runnerbeasts, the man growled, masking his irritation so his grumpy companion wouldn't think she was the cause of it. How peculiar that he actually seemed to care this time. Perhaps he'd finally found a match for his sarcasm. She had certainly proven interesting.

J'zec-!

"Jays, you fardling monster, I'm coming!" he blurted, shooting the copper a glare. Riliath responded with a positively scandalized huff and padded away, clearly sulking. Letting loose an exasperated sigh, J'zec returned his attention to Elmi with a look that carried a lifetime of weariness. "I better go before he throws a tantrum. It's his oiling time." He shook his head, letting the annoyance reign for a moment, and then smoothed his expression back to calm.

"Thank you, dear lady, for leading me from imminent doom. I would have starved had you not come along." The charm was back, along with a teasing grin, and he backed toward his hulking dragon as he offered an elaborate bow. "Perhaps we will meet again, in a less peculiar place." He paused beside Riliath and easily bounded up to the grumpy copper's neck. Once there, he placed a hand against the bright metallic hide to still his dragon. A more genuine smile touched J'zec's face as he glanced down at Elmi. "Thank you for dinner. I hope it wasn't too unpleasant."

With that, Riliath launched himself skyward, craning his head to give Elmi one last, baleful glance. Enjoy your flirting? he inquired of his rider.

I certainly did.

Did you at least mate with her?

No, Ril. And I'd be mortified with myself if I had in such a short time.

...why would you need more time?

J'zec stifled a snort, slapping the copper's neck as he wheeled toward their ledge. Not everyone can be a stallion like you, stud.

Riliath's anger melted, giving way to a rumble of humor and pride. His rider glanced back, catching a glimpse of the drudge's figure disappearing back into the lower caverns. His lips curved in a little grin. Yes, he would definitely need to run into her again.
