Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was the evening hours of whersdawn when the handlers and their charges had long since shut themselves in their rooms to sleep. Rukbat was just beginning to rise, bathing the outside world in light. To spare her young wher's eyes, Avaia had already retreated indoors and went about her usual routine of bathing and preparing for sleep. While her attention was diverted, her young brown took the time to waddle out into the halls and go questing.

It was this sense of curiosity that ultimately led to Avask's predicament. He had found the dining hall all on his own, and while he had already had dinner, he had still spotted the buckets he had first fed out of when he was but a newborn. Instinct drove him forward and he snuffled at the pail before peering into the empty bottom.

It still smelled delightful. He couldn't see anything in there, but perhaps something truly was there. He thrust his snout inside, noticing how much more snug it was than it had been before, but the bucket proved as empty as it had appeared. Huffing in disappointment, he withdrew his head... and the bucket came with him.

The little brown stiffened, turning his head this way and that. The pail refused to budge. He thrashed his head, but still it would not come free. Hearing a familiar chirp, he angled his head up toward where Apa sat atop a table, head cocked curiously. If the flitter was there, then that meant...

Ava! he cried, spinning in wild circles as he tried to dislodge his new helmet. Ava help! He spoke his pleas aloud, believing his handler was right there to assist him.

Down the hall, Avaia paused, her mouth full of water after a thorough cleansing. She could've sworn she heard her name, but Avask was right there with her. She turned her head, dribbling water, only to find the brown missing. "A-" she oozed a little water, whirling back to spit it into a basin, and then twirled back to the room. Distress rippled through their bond. "Avask!?"

AAAAVAAAAA!

She scrambled into the hallway, frantic. "Avask, where are you?!" The image he sent her was one of darkness and only Apa's helpful view of the wher with a bucket on his head sent her dashing in the right direction. "Hang on, Avask! I'm coming!"

It was supposed to be a quiet night.

No really, it was.

Brielle should have known better. Still, for a while, it seemed to be working out. The healer was enjoying a morning/evening mug of klah, Briesk curled up and snoring by her feet. She had tried to convince the green to stay in their room, but the baby wher would have none of it. Despite her protests of Not tired, she had promptly fallen asleep as soon as she had laid down.

When nothing was left in her cup but dregs, Brielle stood and stretched her small frame. “Briesk, baby, it’s time to get up,” she said gently, reaching over and running a hand over the green’s ribcage. Nooooo, sleeeeeeep, the green replied blearily. Sleep gooooooooooood.

“And you can sleep when we’re back in our room.” The healers tone was firm, booking no room for argument. Briesk got to her feet, shaking herself, an unsaid ‘why’ crossing her mind.

Brielle, however, was distracted by another wher entering alone. A brown, not grown, one of Briesk’s adopted clutchmates. Avask, wasn’t it? Confusion passed over her as he poked around the buckets, quickly replaced by quiet chuckling as he stuck his head in. “There won’t be food in there for you, buddy,” she said aloud.

Suddenly she gasped, realizing that the brown’s head would be too large for his new headgear. She jumped as he called aloud for his handler, looking around to see if ‘Ava’ was in the room.

Briesk, however seemed to be on top of the situation.

Or maybe not.

She screeched, trying to catch the attention of the panicking wherling. CALM! she yelled. BRIELLE MINE SAYS YOU MUST BE CALM WHEN YOU ARE HURT SO BE CALM LIKE ME! Far from her words, she leapt around, bumping her head into a chair and her hip into a table within two seconds. BE CALM AVASK, CAAAAAAAAAAAAAALM!!!

“Briesk, no, that’s not how you do it!” Brielle called, trying to calm both green and brown. “Briesk, shh, just for a minute. Avask? Avask, is it? Is your handler—” She sighed. Yeah, that was so not gonna work. She could only hope the wher's handler arrived soon.

Avask's panic was more from the darkness swamping him than his actual situation. As soon as he knew Avaia was on her way, he calmed down a little, standing there with his bucket-stuck head drooping... right up until a voice started screeching at him to calm down. Immediately, his anxiety started up again and he whirled in the direction of the voice, banging the bucket on a table leg and sending vibrations rippling down his small body. He howled in distress, Briesk's words only making it worse, and flopped onto his side to try prying the bucket off with his claws.

To her credit, Avaia arrived in record time, skidding into the doorway and darting toward her flailing wherling. "I'm here, Avask! I'm here!" she cooed, laying a hand on his back to soothe him. Apa chirped cheerfully at her from above, amused by the entire spectacle. "Hold still, buddy. I'll grasp the bucket and I want you to back up, okay?"

A muffled grunt was the wher's response and he clambered back to his feet. Waiting until Avaia had firmly gripped the bucket and given him the "Okay, go!" he surged backward with far more gusto than was really needed. The bucket slide free with a POP and the brown toppled over backwards, staring upside down at Briesk and Brielle as they stared.

"Are you all right, Avask?!" Avaia tossed the bucket aside and scooted next to him, feeling around his head and neck for any damage. He didn't seem hurt, just disoriented.

Briesk fall.

"What?"

Briesk fall off ceiling.

Avaia glanced up, noticing the other pair for the first time, and blinked. "Oh. Um. Hi." She carefully rolled Avask over and he huffed in surprise to see Briesk was not, in fact, hanging off the ceiling, but standing on the ground. "Sorry if he disturbed you." She looked back down at the brown. "What were you thinking, putting your head in that bucket? You're too big for that now!" she gently chided him.

Avask scooted around and flopped his head in her lap, staring up at her with sad eyes. Smell good.

Avaia's brow scrunched in confusion and she looked around. "Dennai is here?"

No, bucket smell good, he corrected.

"Oh. Well next time, make sure I'm close by before you investigate things like that, okay?" She hugged his ugly little head and looked up at the other pair again. "Brielle, is it? Thank you for... trying to calm him down..."

Confusion was the only thing that seemed real for the next few moments. Briesk, at least, had stopped screeching at Avask, but she still bounded back and forth, watching the brown with great interest. She wasn't quite sure why he had a bucket on his head, but he sure looked silly.

Brielle breathed a sigh of relief as the wher's handler appeared and quickly remedied the situation. If Avaia hadn't been near, and Briesk had been older, the healer might have had to remedy the situation herself, but thankfully it hadn't come to that.

The baby green plopped on her haunches once her brother was free from his latest headgear, cocking her head and watching him. Calm good, see? she said. Calm good, calm helpful. Calm good, she repeated once more, seeming to nod her head for emphasis.

Brielle nodded away the other handler's concern. "It's fine. Baby whers are silly sometimes." She glanced at her own wher, sitting primly and seeming quite proud of herself for 'helping.' "Sorry if Briesk scared him. She's been learning to help me in the infirmary, but she gets a little... enthusiatic sometimes." She smiled fondly as Briesk thumped her stubby tail on the ground. The green was helpful, but it would take many months before she had enough knowledge and sense to be a true partner for her.

She glanced back at Avaia. "So, are you planning on joining the troop, or do you have something else in mind?"

Avask peeked at his sister through Avaia's arms, wuffling a greeting. Avask calm. Avask not panic, he insisted. He sat up abruptly, nearly knocking his handler over, and snorted loudly. Bucket panic. Not Avask.

"Oookay." Avaia shrugged at Brielle with a little grin. "He's normally very calm, but I think just hearing Briesk got him worked up. He thought it was worse than it actually was. No harm done." She patted his nearest stubby wing and began rubbing around his neck, trying to alleviate any residual discomfort. "He'll have to get used to things like that, anyway. It's good practice for him to learn how to handle stress."

Avask pra-praactiiis. Ava no worry, he stated confidently.

"I'm not worried at all." Glancing back up at Brielle, she nodded vigorously. "Yes, of course! We'll join the troops and help stop the bandits. That's why I came to Vaioa. The bandits are a real problem around Rubikon and I just want my home and my families to be safe." Nevermind that she sometimes worried Avask was too gentle to ever be a true fighter. Maybe if she started introducing him to older whers, like Fenrask. He was still young, but maybe it was time to start training more rigorously. He had to be ready once they got a good lead on the bandits. She only hoped he was big enough for them to join the fight by then.

She tilted her head. "You're a healer? That's great! It's always helpful for the troops to have more healers around. Maybe one day you'll be patching me up," she said with a grin.

No, Avask denied, shaking his head. Avask protect Ava. Ava no hurt ever.

"Thanks buddy."

Briesk glared at the offending, ‘panicking’ bucket in question. Terrible bad bucket. Very rude bucket, she declared. Bucket no hurt Briesk’s friend. She turned back to Avask, happy grin on her face as she thumped her tail against the table leg. Bucket behave now. Briesk tell it so. With that, she turned back and flopped at Brielle’s feet.

“Sorry she riled him up like that,” Brielle apologized again, reaching down to scratch at the green’s headknobs. “It’s a learning process,” she agreed, referring to both the brown and her own wher.

The healer nodded along as Avaia spoke. “Yes, it’s so unfortunate about those bandits. My trip from Cienna to Vaioa had me on edge the whole time,” she explained. “Hopefully they’ll be stopped soon.”

She smiled. “I hope not!” she said ferevently. “Patching up wouldn’t be much fun for either of us.” Smiling again at Avask’s declaration, she looked down at Briesk. “Well, Ava, it was a pleasure to meet you... although the circumstances could have been a bit less harrowing. Perhaps I’ll see you around?”
