Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Give me all your loves!
Ritali trudged into the Candidate Barracks, looked around and sighed, throwing the small bag of clothes on one of the couches and sat down, gingerly. The Barracks were basically empty, and glancing at the candle she realised that the afternoon chores were still going. That meant she had at least a little while of peace and quiet...hopefully. She wasn't quite ready to deal with some of the candidates. Some of them were new and all cheerful and enthusiastic and hopeful, happily waiting for the next Queen to rise. The other candidates who had been left standing had mostly moved on and where back to the usual routine of chores, lessons, and waiting. Rit was certainly in a better frame of mind now, thanks to T'nere and Zakroth's efforts, but it was still a little to see the other candidates so hopeful, not at all bothered.

She had also taken great care to avoid the Weyrling Barracks as much as possible during her convalescence. Once she was allowed to get up and move around, she had started taken short, gentle walks, first around the Infirmary, then into the corridors, then out into the Weyrbowl. She always was careful not to run into any Weyrlings if she could avoid it, no matter her frame of mind, seeing the new pairs still stung more than she cared to admit.

Now though she would have no excuse for keeping her distance. She had been given permission by the healers to return to lessons, though her chores were still limited as she couldn't lift anything heavy. Lessons were totally fine though and she was not really looking forward to the first one. She wasn't sure what was going to be worse, the compassion of the candidates she knew, or the curious looks from the new candidates.

Huffing she leant back, closing her eyes and taking a couple of deep breaths, trying to remember what T'nere had told her. There was no point in worrying too much about things that were out of her control. She also had to remind herself that the lessons were not a reminder of failure but simply part of life going on. She hadn't failed, she had done nothing wrong. Not Impressing was not a failure, it simply meant her time hadn't come and her dragon had not hatched. That was what she had to remember, and make sure she didn't dwell too much on the past.

With that little pep talk made to herself she opened her eyes again and sat up slowly. Despite the go ahead from the Healers, she did still have to be careful with some movements as the scar was still tender and the muscles were weak from weeks of little use. Reaching to grab the bag of her clothes she had tossed to one side, she winced, pulling back as the motion stung. She took a deep breath, biting her lip slightly to keep from making a noise.

Still curled up slightly from the pain she jumped slightly as she heard the door to the barracks open, looking up she tried to smooth her face, hoping the pain didn't show on her face to whoever was walking in.

Kellyn had finished her chores in record time today. There were certainly plenty of other things she could help with in the infirmary, but she had gotten permission from the masters to finish up early and try to catch her mother for an early dinner. She made it a point to try and have a meal with her mom at least twice monthly, but with Aerella's busy schedule, it didn't always happen. Which was why Kellyn had completed her chores and then headed back to the barracks to change before she would try to track down her mother.

Or that was the plan, at least, right up until she burst into the barracks and saw Ritali curled on the couch. She had seen the other candidate in the infirmary plenty since the hatching, but she hadn't realized she'd been released already. From the look on her face, she was still in some pain and Kellyn couldn't possibly leave that alone. No, it was her job to make sure Ritali felt as good as she possibly could.

"Hold that thought," she said by way of greeting and then dashed off to her room. It took her a bit of rummaging to find what she was looking for, but she finally located it. Giving a sleepy Hazel a little pat on the head, she bolted back out to the commons and dropped into a chair across from Ritali. "Here you are," she said, extending a little jar of numbweed. "You can hold on to that. I have others." She leaned back in her chair with a lazy smile.

"I don't think we've ever officially met. I'm Kellyn. I'm the one that snuck klah in to you a few times while you were in the infirmary. I tried to get you wine once, but a healer caught me and.... confiscated it." She shrugged and shifted into a more comfortable position. "Being stuck in bed all day can be so boring. I nearly went crazy when I had to do it. I ended up counting the threads in my sheets." She shook her head with a dramatic sigh and then glanced at Ritali's face.

She smiled knowingly and gestured vaguely toward her room. "I can go, if you would prefer being alone. I just couldn't sit by and watch a pretty girl make that face." Sure, Ritali was several turns older than her, but a little bit of flattery never hurt. Especially if it helped the healing candidate feel a little bit better. If, however, Ritali allowed her to stay... Well, she could always try dinner with her mother tomorrow.

Give me all your loves!
Still trying to catch her breath, Ritali had barely even gotten a look at the entering girl before she had dashed off, apparently with some urgent mission. Easing herself up a little she managed to get into a slightly more upright position, enough at least that she was able to see what the girl was doing as she re-entered. She blinked a little as the little jar was thrust under her nose, taking it automatically and looking up to meet the girls' eye, finally recognising her, her mouth parting in a little 'o'.

"I do remember you. The Klah was very appreciated! I don't think I said thanks those times you bought it, I wasn't very social." She wrinkled her nose a little at her own bad manners. "So thank you for that, even if you weren't able to manage the wine." She smirked slightly, "and it is nice to meet you properly now that I'm not laced with fellis...and sulking." Kellyn's comment about the dullness made her laugh out loud, an action that hurt, yet also felt good, having not laughed properly in quite some time. "You are very right about that! I stared at the ceiling a lot, couldn't roll over obviously. I think I had the patch above me totally memorised by the time they let me out, knew every crack and speck of dust off by heart! Pity you hadn't managed to get that wine to me. The ceiling might have started to seem more interesting with a glass or two in me." She grinned, idly playing with the little jar of numbweed, turning it over in her hands.

"Thanks for this." She added, tapping the jar, "the healers only gave me some when I was first released but I used that up pretty quick."

Rit hesitated a moment of the girl's offer to leave her alone. Just minutes ago she had been hoping for solitude and silence but now she had someone talking to her, and not treating her like glass, she was actually a bit more cheerful. Carefully she eased herself properly upright and lent back in the chair, moving slowly and carefully stretching out a little. Glancing at Kellyn again her lips twitched into another smirk, "pretty face huh? Good to know the most important part of me survived!" The comment was said with no bitterness, only self deprecating humour and a touch her old flirty warmth. "Please, feel free to stay, unless you have somewhere to be? I wouldn't want to keep you."

Kellyn wiggled more comfortably into her seat as the recognition lit Rit's face. She grinned in understanding and waved her hand in a dismissive gesture. "Don't worry about it. Nobody expects you to be cheerful and polite after what you went through. I'm fairly impressed that you didn't throw something at me, to be honest." She paused and shrugged. "I did, but I was fairly young at the time. Always biting the healers' heads off, throwing any food they brought to me. I was such an angry little thing."

Another chuckle proceeded this comment and a little puff of cold air announced Hazel's presence before he slumped in her lap. She scrubbed her fingers up his spine, making him chirrup with delight and snuggle into a ball. "Well, you have to find some way to entertain yourself, right? Maybe I should've tried to sneak something in for you to do. I don't know your hobbies, though, so I wouldn't know if you preferred hides to read or a loom for weaving or something else entirely." She shrugged and tilted her head at the girl.

Her smile softened and she gave the other girl a look over. "You're looking better, though. Happier, almost? Is that just being out of the infirmary or-? Ah, listen to me, being all nosy! You don't have to answer that." She waved her hand again and shifted Hazel, tucking her legs up under her. Clearly she didn't intend to move for a while.

"I wouldn't say your pretty face is the only important part of you. I'm glad all of you survived." She smiled again, just a touch flirtatiously, and shrugged. "I don't have anywhere else to be. Chores are done, 'lizard is content..." She gestured down at Hazel, who had fast fallen asleep. "I'd say my work is done for the day. The only other thing to do is grab dinner." She tilted her head, raising an eyebrow. "Have you eaten? I could go grab something and bring it back, if you'd rather avoid the crowds."

Rit couldn't help but smile a little at Kellyn's casual acceptance of her explanation, it was actually kinda of nice she realised, to have someone not tiptoe around the topic of her injury. So many people acted like the didn't want to remind her of it, as though she had somehow managed to forget about the long gashed across her middle. It was ridiculous; Kellyn's straightforward acknowledgement actually made it easier for her.

"heh, I was too busy feeling sorry for myself and sulking to be angry. Besides, I was more angry at myself at the start." She said with a slight grin, rather amused at the thought of a younger version of the girl throwing things around. Smiling as the firelizard appeared, she leant back a little, squirming carefully to find a comfortable spot.

"Oh after the first week I would have appreciated anything you had bought me! Even just something else to stare at." She said with a little giggle, remembering just how bored she had gotten after a while, with nothing to do and not even being able to get out of bed easily. It had definitely started to wear her down after a while, making it harder for her to keep a positive frame of mind.

The girl's next comment made her smile warmly, "I do feel better. I admit that after it happened, I was not...well, not in a very good frame of mind. It really hurt, not Impressing." She paused, then chuckled, "hurt mentally I mean, not just physically" she said with a little grin, one hand resting lightly on the hidden bandages, they were light now, but still there to protect the healing skin. She shrugged a little, "getting out of the infirmary certainly helped!" She said with a little laugh, remembering how happy she had been when she had been allowed to walk out of those doors. "I've also had some people, very kind people who helped me get out of the dark space, help me get some hope back."

She smiled as she glanced down at the clearly content firelizard, "well, as long as he is fine we'll all good" she giggled, carefully rearranging herself to a position that would be comfortable for a while, seeing as it seemed the cheerful girl didn't seem to be going anywhere. Which Rit was actually glad about, something that surprised even her. "I am kinda hungry..." she said slowly as though only just realising, "but really, I don't mind, it's nice to just sit around and relax in somewhere not the infirmary!"

Kellyn had never been one to avoid a subject. She also wasn't going to tiptoe around it, as that made it seem like it was somehow Ritali's fault she had been mauled and it wasn't. Sometimes baby dragons attacked in their confusion and panic. It wasn't anything the other girl had done. The fact she had gone through something like that, walked away, and returned to candidacy left Kellyn with a healthy amount of respect. A lot of candidates quit after being mauled.

Her eyebrows arched as Ritali confessed she had been angry at herself. "It wasn't your fault. Not that happens at a hatching will ever be your fault," she stated. She'd probably heard that before, from people with more experience and knowledge than herself, but it didn't hurt to reiterate it. Especially since she still repeated it to herself every time so walked away from a hatching without a dragon. It had become her mantra.

She nodded in understanding. "I get it. I've had my fair share of hatchings," she said with a little laugh. Hazel's presence on her lap kept her from drawing her legs to her chest and hugging them as she often did when she mentioned her previous failures... no, not failures. Previous hatchings, that was it. They were not failures. "It does hurt the first time, but it gets better. Easier. Not that I think you'll need to get used to it. You'll definitely impress at the next hatching." Her tone was confident and she honestly did believe Ritali would walk off the sands next time with a dragon at her side.

She dropped her gaze to Hazel again and stroked one of his folded wings. "Don't let this fool you. He's a little beast when he's awake." She tickled one of his head knobs and he cheeped sleepily in protest. She glanced back up and smiled. "Well, it's up to you. If you want to eat in the dining hall, we can. If you want to eat here, I'm find grabbing something. Whatever you're comfortable with."

Give me all your loves!
Rit nodded a little, smiling, "it took me a long time to realise that. As well as some friends telling me over and over until I believed them" Her smile warmed a little as she thought of how much time T'nere and Zakroth had spent trying to convince her that exact thing. It had taken quite a while for it to sink in, and even know she had to catch herself from sinking into a dark space in her mind some days. "I had stopped hoping you see." she added after a moment's pause, "I had let myself no longer care what happened at Hatchings. But this was a bit different, someone said they believed I would Impress, and I took it to heart. So when I didn't, I thought I had failed them. That hurt more than anything..." She trailed off, looking of Kellyn's shoulder at nothing, she hadn't said it out load other than to T'nere in the infirmary and the words seem to sting as they came out.

She took a quick deep breath - and revelling in the fact that it caused only the tiniest tug - and made herself smile at Kellyn, "I think next time will be the lucky one. For you as well. We'll both Impress." She nodded slowly then giggled a little, "I feel sorry for whichever Weyrling Master has to deal with me when I do Impress." Yes, when, she had to make sure she used such positive words, "I bet I'll be utterly useless! Too giddy to pay attention." She paused as a sudden thought occurred to her. "We'll have to actually pay attention in lessons when we Impress! I barely pay attention to our lessons any more, I know it all....but I won't know anything at all!" She grinned, the thought of learning new things cheering her up immensely and she settled back in the chair smiling happily.

Rit hesitated for a moment before giving the other girl an unusually shy smile, "would you mind getting some food? I am still a little wary of going to the dining hall and getting bumped around." Her eyes flickered to the sleeping lizard, "assuming you can shift him." She added with a little giggle. She was glad this girl had appeared when she did, maybe what she actually needed was to get talking to people again instead of bitterly ignoring them.

Kellyn smiled encouragingly, chuckling a little as Ritali mentioned friends talking her through things. Her thoughts turned back to her own hatchings, to the friends and the pep talks her mother had given her. She was still there, standing time and time again, because of them. Her thoughts turned, touching briefly on the look Harrison had given her when she'd given him a pep talk of her own. Her smile softened just a little.

But it vanished as Rit admitted her stirred hope. Kellyn hesitated a moment and then scooted forward on her chair, reaching across and placing her hand comfortingly on the other girl's knee. "I get it. My second hatching I was... well I didn't get out of the way of a young bronze fast enough. My father was a brownrider and I wanted so desperately to impress, to be like him. He wante that too." She paused and sat back again, stroking Hazel's folded wings. "He didn't talk to me again after that." She shrugged, indicating it was a past hurt, and smiled again. "It's easier when you remember that you're doing this for you... not anybody else."

With the topic on a happier subject, she laughed. "I hope so! It would be wonderful to be in the same class as you," she enthused. And Harrison too. She added privately. "Don't worry--I'd never let you fall behind in lessons."

Hearing Rit's request, she nodded and very gently shifted Hazel to the chair beside her. He sleepily raised his head and chirped an inquiry. "I'm going to get food. Stay here and keep Ritali company, okay? Be good." She gave him a stern look and then stood. "Be back before you can cough three times!" she teased, and then took off to the dining hall at a run.

She returned sometime later with a bundle of food and a small jug of klah, spreading the meal out on a table for them to enjoy. "Dig in!"
