Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese waited, pacing and then stopping, in one of the classrooms in the Lower Caverns. Jasper Class was scheduled for another swimming lesson, and while the growing dragonets needed plenty of exercise to build up the muscles that would eventually support them in flight, missing one or two lessons wouldn’t hurt. Besides, Vereth and Morueth could make up the practice during free time later.

Chetia and C’simir had been summoned for a Queen lesson. Aniese glanced over at the hides stacked on the table; there was no way they’d be able to get through all of these today, but at least they’d be able to start. Now that the dragonets were old enough and big enough that they didn’t need contstant babying, it was appropriate to begin pulling the pair out of lessons occasionally to contribute additional lessons to their education.

Aniese pursed her lips. Rezeirth was outside the entrance to the Lower Caverns, hopeful that the dragonets would tag along and that they could chat, but Aniese privately assumed that the dragonets would be more interested in an afternoon nap. Oh, well. As long as they were out of the way, she couldn’t complain.

A glance at the clock-candle told her that it was just about time. C’simir and Chetia would hopefully be there any minute now.

Vereth had complained, but Chetia stood firm. There was no reason for the young gold to tail her through halls she rapidly outgrew. They didn't need another door incident. And Faranth forbid a repeat of the bed dilemna. For such a graceful dragon Vereth was alarmingly good at wrecking the Weyr's property.

I apologized for the bed. Sniffing, the young queen sulked through Chetia's good-byes. A parting kiss, planted on the tip of Vereth's suede nose, melted some of the gold's indignation and her presence crowded Chetia's own jumbled thoughts as the woman left for the appointed room.

Her best tunic made its reappearance, the first since the Feast. Happenstance birthed superstition, and Chetia was susceptible to anything that might boost her status in important company. Rezeirth liked this one, and Vereth was partial to its pretty color. It had to be a winner. Damascus rode her left shoulder, handsomely marked hide gleaming beneath a fresh coat of oil.

His chattering kept her company, taking the edge off her tightly wound nerves. Still, she loitered just outside the door, patting haphazardly at her thrice brushed hair before entering.

"Aniese." She forfeited the customary bow, out of consideration for Damascus as well as a heightened awareness of status and rank. She'd come to dearly hate thoughtless kow-towing, and harbored sympathy for any who might be in the same position. She nodded instead, nervous smile in place. Then she stepped to the side, petting Damascus as she half watched the door.

It was time for a queen lesson. For the Junior Weyr(wo)men. C'mir still chafed under the title, despite half a turn of it under his belt. He didn't particularly mind being called a Queenrider--Morueth was, after all, the most regal and glorious queen there ever had been--but the other one... the one people still sniggered behind his back. It made him cringe.

I find it rather droll. You are clearly not a woman, so there is no reason to let it annoy you, Morueth remarked. She lounged on her couch, watching her rider fret as he got ready for the lesson. Ordinarily, he would be fine with nice pants and a tunic. In a situation like this, however, he had to make sure he looked just perfect. Why must you dress up for Aniese? she asked, picking the name from his thoughts. Do you wish to impress her?

"I-It's not like that!" The man protested, wrangling himself into his nicest tunic and attempting to comb through his curly mane at the same time. "I just have to present myself properly. You're all about image. You get it, right? After all, she's a queenrider--"

So are you.

His mouth opened and closed as he tried to think of a clever retort. Coming up with none, he flapped his vest in her direction. "I stand by what I said! Especially since Chetia will also be there and Faranth knows she'll give me that disapproving stare if I don't look like I'm taking this seriously."

Are you taking it seriously?

Cas huffed and slipped the vest on, giving himself a last look over before deeming it good enough. "Course I am. I'm going, aren't I?" He started for the door and stopped when the garnet rose to follow. "I... don't think you'll fit in the lower caverns anymore..." he pointed out slowly.

I said nothing of going with you. I will enjoy the sunlight while you toil away in dust and darkness.

"Charming. Thanks."

Together they headed out to the weyrbowl, and despite Morueth's insistence, she continued to pad alongside her rider until they drew closer to Rezeirth. Giving the much larger queen a polite bow, Cas headed inside while Morueth settled herself in a particularly nice spot of sunlight.

Hello Rezeirth, she said respectfully, bowing her head.

Cas hurried to where Aniese and Chetia waited, slipping in and giving Aniese a bow. "Aniese," he greeted softly. His gaze shifted to Chetia and he gave her a similar dip of respect. "Chetia." He was perfectly capable of giving her the proper courtesy, even if he did still find it difficult to meet her gaze. That dare seemed burned in his mind for eternity.

Aniese brightened as Chetia slipped into the room and gave a polite nod and greeting. An eager smile lingered on her lips as she gave the girl a once-over and then said, “Chetia! I see you’re doing well.”

C’mir appeared only moments later, bringing a quick stop to whatever conversation Aniese might have engaged in. She smiled and nodded in return. She did not have the same relationship with the garnetrider that she had with Chetia, but perhaps she would grow to know him. A lingering thought raced through her brain—a flash of B’ran’s face—but it was gone in a moment. Just because one male Garnetrider was unbefitting of his rank didn’t mean they would all be. By every account, at least, C’mir wasn’t flouting rules and causing trouble the way B’ran had.

“Hello, C’mir,” Aniese said politely. She looked at the pair, and then offered them another smile. “So. I take it things have been going well in Weyrlinghood so far? Have you both been adjusting alright?” Aniese had taken a considerable amount of time to get used to sharing a mind with someone else, but it always straightened itself out in the end.

She indicated the chairs around the table, and then sat in one herself. “Please. Get comfortable. I don’t want to stand up here and lecture while you take notes like I’m some Weyrling Master.” She smirked and pulled the stack of hides toward her. “Today I’m going to teach you about negotiating with other Weyrs, Holds, and Halls. Or, at least, I’ll introduce these topics to you. There will be more lessons of this kind in the coming months.”

She steepled her fingers and gazed evenly at them both. “What do you know so far about relations between two major Holds, or a Hall and a Hold, or a Weyr? Anything in general?”

Out in the Weyrbow, Rezeirth was simply delighted to see Morueth. She trilled eagerly and knelt down to be closer to the Garnet.

Hello! She enthused. How are you doing, little one? Have you been learning a lot?

Aniese's friendly regard distracted Chetia from her thoughts. She matched the other woman's smile with a shyer curve of her lips, before C'mir had joined them and whatever small talk she'd been prepping was surrendered to niceties with her fellow weyrling and queen rider. A pang of guilt rode hard on the heels of her disappointed "hello C'mir" once her ears caught the timbre of the words outside her head.

"It's nice to see you." She was quick to correct, perhaps too fast to be sincere. She fretted over the implications as Aniese took a seat, side-eyeing C'mir and flashing a nervous smile when she thought he chanced to look her way.

"Nothing we can't handle! Baths seem to take much longer these days, though, am I right?"

Damascus burbled to himself, disappointed now that Chetia's fingers were not scritching his back. Hungry for attention as most young fire-lizards were, he glided to the tabletop where Aniese arranged the lesson's materials. Plopping with great self-satisfaction on top of the hides, the juvenile creeled and fanned his wings for Aniese's approval.

"Damascus! I'm sorry, he - no, get off that." He whined back, rocking uncertainly atop his new perch as Chetia's eyes narrowed warningly. Only once she took a step forward did he scamper away. Now sulking at the table's edge, Damascus pointedly ignored Chetia's efforts to coax him back to her shoulder. The gold weyrling, face burning, gave it up after a moment. With a huff of her own, she sank into the chair farthest from the epicenter.

The topic at hand piqued her interest, focus sharpening as Aniese surveyed them for general information. Chetia worked her jaw, eyes bright but straying in C'mir's direction once again. Sucking on her bottom lip in uncertainty, she relapsed with a sigh into her seat. She still felt bad for misdirecting her frustration earlier - she'd let him have this one.

What's going on?

Vereth still sounded sullen, and Chetia winced as she was caught off-guard.

Nothing!

A long pause, the faintest impression of what the gold weyrling swore was laughter --

You should have brought me along.

Well I'm glad you're amused. Her arch reply was married to a fresh bloom of color in her cheeks, eyes cast table-side while Vereth chuckled away the last of her annoyance at having been left behind. Damascus deigned at least to return to her side, rewarded with an absent pat on the head from Chetia.

Cas was no stranger to entering a room and having conversations stall just at his presence. It had become something almost routine since he impressed Morueth, but he still found it grating. He would've thought two queenriders would be above such things, but apparently not. His heart sank, dropping somewhere toward his toes as Chetia greeted him in a tone that said she clearly didn't want him there. Not even the one person he thought would understand the situation he was in could stand him.

His gaze dropped as she hurriedly tried to amend her earlier lapse, but he wasn't fooled. He wasn't wanted there any more than anywhere else. He couldn't just leave, though--not when Aniese had summoned him. True, they were on something of a level now (or would be when he and Morueth graduated), but he still held firmly to the notion that the other queenriders were higher up than him. Evidently they thought so as well.

"Going fine..." he said softly, not bothering to draw his attention to Aniese as he spoke. His gaze did shift, however, at the keen of a firelizard and he watched the little creature settle on the hides Aniese had just pulled toward her.

His lips quirked. He was all too familiar with the antics of a firelizard. Mere remained sulking in his room, unhappy he had left her behind. He knew she would forget soon enough, anyway.

Seating himself a respectable distance from both women, he lapsed into silence as the next question was posed. This one he didn't have any answer to, but he could feel Chetia's gaze returning time and again to his face. Did she expect him to answer? She would be disappointed, then.

"I know nothing," he replied simply. It was a true statement on the topic. If it was also a slight dig on himself, well... what did it matter? He would never actually be anyone of importance. Just because he rode a queen didn't mean he truly had any rank of his own.

Morueth sent her rider reassuring thoughts, insisting that Chetia and Aniese hadn't meant anything by it. He was overthinking it and letting his tendency toward moping take over. He ignored it, so she turned her attentions instead to her mother.

In a rare display of shyness, the garnet lowered her head and peered up toward Rezeirth. I am well. Yes, there is a lot to learn, but I have C'mir to help me, she said, broadcasting the comment for her rider as well. The faintest color touched his cheeks, but he made no comment.

Aniese raised her eyebrows at Damascus, projecting toward the small Brown an air of general unimpressed-ness. Don’t make me sic General on you, squirt, she thought calmly, although once Chetia had moved him off of her hides, her seriousness melted into fond affection.

“Not to worry. My first three were much worse, if you can believe it.” In fact, they were probably only now keeping their distance because of General’s commanding presence. Training, it seemed, could only do so much to counteract a naughty personality.

Chetia still seemed flustered by the incident, though, so Aniese redirected her attention to C’mir. His short, brittle answer made a thoughtful frown flit across her face. He didn’t even want to try? Was the boy taking his duties as a future Weyr Council member seriously? She made a mental note—there was something going on with him that she didn’t remotely understand, something that could be blamed on her not knowing him well at all. She would need to look into it later, she decided.

Pushing the troubling thought away, Aniese lifted up the hide on top of the stack.

“This,” she said, “is an example of a standard Record you might see if you spend any amount of time looking through the Records. The Weyr Harper recorded a meeting between a visiting Lord Holder from Keroon—this appears to be two Passes ago—and summarizes the discussion of tithes that ensued. Dry work if you’re assigned the task of copying onto a new hide.”

She set it down and smiled at the two Weyrlings. “But what it contains is an example of the way Holds and Weyrs—and Halls—do business. Relations between the citizens of these locales will influence things, but by and large, the relationships are influenced primarily by the interactions between the representatives of each body. That is to say, if a rider were to visit a Hold and engage in discussion or agreement with a holder, this agreement would not be binding—would be as good as useless—unless that rider and that holder were acting as official representatives. In essence, this means that the two of you—as future members of Weyr council—will be tasked with acting as ambassadors for Vaioa in the future. Whether it is visiting nearby Holds or Halls, or even other Weyrs, you will be tasked with the burden of negotiating and communicating with other representatives.”

She glanced between the two to gauge their enthusiasm for this proposition.

It is good to work with and rely on your rider! Rezeirth told Morueth enthusiastically. You are right to let him help you. The important thing is that you learn to be strong together.
