Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Third officers. They had made sharding third officers. The offer had completely blindsided Ara, while Arask took it all in stride. He knew that they were the perfect ones for the job. It only made sense, in his mind, that they were promoted. They hunted bandits zealously. Perhaps too zealously. Nevertheless, the blue thought that they were the perfect choice. Ara was less certain, but she would do her best to be what Steel needed. And maybe they would be allowed to go off on their own to hunt.

Most normal people would have celebrated such an honored promotion. They would have gone drinking with friends, maybe started a game of dragonpoker. Ara and Arask went for a run. Which naturally led to a wrestling match when Arask kicked a stone at Ara. The bluepair parted ways at their room, and when Ara returned from her bath, she was startled by the greeting she received.

Go celebrate. Want see Hamask. The big blue had developed a soft spot for the green. "Soft" being a relative term. He wasn't exactly soft towards anyone. But he definitely liked the female more than he liked the other whers. Maybe because she had had his babies. Ara snickered, earning a growl for her lifemate.

"You can go see Hamask on your own. Why do I have to come?" It was nothing against Hama. But Ara felt rather awkward around the woman. It happened whenever she spent the night with someone; she couldn't even look the woman in the eye after. It was just...awkward. "I'm going to grab something to eat. Maybe sit in the common area."

Arask growled again, getting up from his bed. No. Visit Hamask. Girl no leave Arask sight, so come with. With that, he lunged forward, got Ara's arm in his jaws, and dragged her out of the room. She had no choice but to follow. It was either that or have her arm dislocated. Again. All she could do was splutter and protest as she was pulled toward the greenpair's quarters. Arask butted the door with his big head. Hamask? Is Arask. Come see?

"Looks like they're not home. Let's go," Ara muttered, not even waiting a minute. She turned to go, and was roughly yanked back.

It was a quiet night, something Hama was grateful for. As much as she relished company, it was also nice to stay in for once. Hama never liked to be alone, but she never really was anymore--not since Hamask came into her life.

The young green was curled up in her corner, awake but lounging happily. Every now and then she would get up, waddle over to the table where Hama was working, and peer at the hides on the table. Hama wasn't entirely sure her wher could actually see the doodles she had been drawing, but every time, Hamask would make a little noise of approval in her throat and then return to her bedding. She'd made three or four of these progress reports by now.

Then there came a knock at the door. Well, not really a knock--more like one dull thump. Hama saw Hamask's head shoot up before the green got to her feet.

Visitors!

Brows raised, Hama rose and crossed to the door, swinging it wide open. She stared at the wher and handler outside--eyes going first to Arask, then to Ara, and finally to where Arask held Ara's arm--before she smiled.

"You know, I was stationed at a hold where a firelizard used to bring me gifts kind of like this. He would bring me dead tunnelsnakes, and if he couldn't find me, he'd just leave them at my door. Never a human though; this is new."

Hi Arask. Hamask shoved her nose past Hama's side to level a wherish grin on the blue.

Several scenarios flashed through Ara's mind as she heard, through Arask, footsteps approaching from the other side of the door. She could put on a mask, but there was so little time to prepare. Which one would she even use? Flirty and outgoing might make Hama flirt back, and then what would she do? Aloof and professional might make the other woman think she disliked her. She could try to make a break for it, which could lead to several more outcomes. She could escape unnoticed; unlikely. She could escape and then either be seen or be betrayed by Arask. Very likely, and it would be embarrassing. Unbecoming, even, of a troop officer. She could also lose her right arm.

Arask confirmed that by clamping his jaws tighter around the limb. Ara hissed, tugging fruitlessly. Let go, you wherry-necked bastard! Arask just glared. He wanted to stay, which meant that she had to stay too. She could never leave his sight, not when he could help it. In this case, he most definitely could help it.

The door opened, and Arask squinted at Hama when she looked at him, while Ara blushed faintly pink and tugged her arm again. Arask grunted around the flesh, but released her at last. She couldn't run now. Stupid Girl. Ara discreetly kicked his leg, watching Hama's expression turn into a smile. Her pale brow wrinkled at the other woman's words. What should she say to that? She was tempted to ask what Hold this had taken place in, or why the flit had taken such a liking to her. Maybe she could say something charming, like, He probably brought you gifts because he thought you were pretty.

Instead, what came out was, "Are you comparing me to a dead tunnelsnake?" Clamping her mouth shut—oh, shells, has my jaw been open this entire time?—she rubbed her arm. Damn you, Arask. It stings!

Girl fault. Girl stupid. Stepping right up to the greenpair, Arask touched Hamask's nose with his own. Hello. No intrude? Thought spend time. Together. Celebrate kill things? Okay? He wouldn't mind a celebratory hunt, but he would also be willing to do whatever Hamask wanted.

Ara glanced shyly at Hama, clearing her throat. "Um...sorry for interrupting your evening. He wanted to see Hamask, and, uh, I'm not really allowed to leave his sight, or he tracks me down. So..." She chuckled nervously and just a little awkwardly. I hate you, Arask. You could have at least given me a moment to prepare to try and be charming. This was definitely not charming, and she was sure Hama would agree.

Hama's brows rose a fraction of an inch, a look that could have meant a number of things, before she burst out laughing. "Oh, well, I guess kind of did, didn't I?" Her smile returned. "Don't worry; you're much better than a dead tunnelsnake."

But behind her smile, Hama searched for any signs of the reason behind this visit. She hadn't seen much of Ara since... well, since the night of Hamask's run. She had seen her around the hold, of course, and at meetings, but this was the first time they had talked face to face. This visit was unexpected.

Though, certainly not unwelcome.

Hamask burbled at Arask, her customary welcome. No intrude, she assured the blue. Celebrate? Kill things--Food time. She craned her neck to give Hama a querying look, her blue eyes wide. Hama, fooooood?

Hama glanced down at her wher, only halfway hearing her as most of her attention was on Ara. The blonde woman offered an explanation for her presence, and Hama tried not to feel too disappointed by it--it had been Arask who had instigated this meeting, not his pretty handler.

Even so, she couldn't be too disappointed by the outcome; either way, Ara was here, and Hama liked company.

"We can get you food, baby," Hama finally answered her wher, resting one hand on the green's wrinkled forehead. She looked back at Ara, one question rising to prominence in her mind. "I heard Hamask say something about celebrating. Celebrating what?"

Maybe Ara smiled a little foolishly when Hama started laughing. What a nice sound! Pretty, even. She would forever deny that she wore any sort of dopy smile at that moment. "Um...thank you? I think?" Being better than a dead tunnelsnake wasn't a bad thing. It could be worse. The brief moment of quiet that followed made her look around, avoiding eye contact. What now?

Hamask say no intrude. Relax. Arask butted his handler's hip with his head. Hard. She stumbled aside, righted herself, and elbowed him sharply in the shoulder. He growled, snapping his teeth at her. She gave him a little growl back. All perfectly normal behavior for the bluepair.

Hama and Hamask were exact opposites, so sweet in their interactions with one another. Ara had to chuckle, taking a few steps back with Arask so the greenpair could actually leave their room. "Celebration?" She had to think a moment, but when she remembered, she blushed and looked down. "Uh, we're Steel's third officers now. Nothing too important."

Hama's eyes widened just a split-second before a strangled shriek burst from her throat and a grin erupted across her features. "Third officers!" she exclaimed, as soon as she managed to control her excitement. As it was, it took a considerable amount of restraint not to leap across the distance between them, seize Ara by the shoulders and shake her until she showed at least a smidgeon of joy. "Ara, that is important. Congratulations!"

Hama stepped out into the hallway, beckoning Hamask after her even though the green was already in motion. Hamask trilled her agreement with her handler's words, nudging Arask happily. Yes, yes, good thing! Food now.

"Let me buy you a drink," Hama continued, her visage taking on an eager look. "You need to celebrate, too!"

Even Arask, stoic as he was, jumped when Hama shrieked. Ara took a step back, hand instinctively settling on her wher's shoulder. What was that about?! Had something crawled into the other woman's shirt? Her frown only deepened when comprehension dawned on her face. Oh. "Oh. Thank you." What else was she supposed to say? You should probably smile, for starters. Obeying her mind, she forced the corners of her lips upwards; it wasn't too difficult, not with Hama grinning at her like that. I think she's more excited than we are, Arask.

Female excite easy, the blue replied simply. He nudged Hamask back, careful not to shove her too hard. He did not want to hurt the green! She wasn't his Girl, who he knew could handle it.

I don't excite easily.

Bond to Arask. Half male. Hamask's bond to Hamask. Full female. In Arask's eyes, his logic made perfect sense. He did not bother waiting for his slow Girl. He nuzzled Hamask and turned, trotting down the hall. Yes, food. Come, Hamask. Arask hunt for Hamask, or Hamask hunt for Hamask?

Ara shook her head, trying to wrap her mind around her wher's words. To her horror, they actually made some semblance of sense. She blinked rapidly, running the fingers of one hand through her hair. "I don't know when he turned into a gentleman." Since when did Arask offer to hunt for another wher? She glanced at Hama, one eyebrow lifting when she noticed how eager the other woman looked. Maybe she should take a page out of her wher's book. Mustering up her courage, she shrugged. "How about I buy you a drink?" That wasn't so terribly difficult.

Hamask trotted happily after Arask, but his question made her stop in her tracks. Her wrinkled head swiveled around and she leveled a questioning look on her handler. Arask hunt for Hamask? she asked, excitement growing at the thought of someone else doing all the work, while she could just keep on relaxing.

"Hunt for yourself, Hamask," Hama replied brusquely, in a tone that brooked no argument. "You need the exercise."

Hamask grunted, but offered no objection, nor seemed to take any offense at her handler's directness. The green wher set off after Arask, hurrying a little to catch up to his side.

"Sorry, but she can be terribly lazy," Hama murmured in explanation to Ara. "As much as I would like to let her indulge, she already lives a pretty indolent lifestyle in the infirmary. That's just not good for a wher, you know?" Then, as an afterthought, she added with more volume, "Thank you for the offer, Arask, it was kind of you!"

Ysss, Hamask said in agreement.

"As for your offer," Hama continued, her mouth forming a prim smile as she looked at the bluehandler, "absolutely not. Today is your day. You don't get to buy any drinks, because I will be buying all of them." Again, her tone brooked no argument. Her dark eyes bright with anticipation, Hama turned toward the hold's dining hall.

Hearing the clacks of Hamask's claws stop, Arask stopped as well. He glanced over his shoulder, watching as the green looked to her handler. When Hamask's human replied to something that the green had said, Arask took no offense. He of all whers understood the need for exercise. A deep sound--almost a purr of sorts--rumbled in his chest. He nuzzled Hamask when she caught up to him, the action a little rough and forceful. Arask and Hamask hunt together. Arask want see run.

Arask! Ara blushed the slightest bit. Even though the wher clearly didn't understand what his words could have implied, she certainly did! "Um, no, that's fine. Exercise is important," she said quickly, nodding along with Hama's explanation. "Y'know, you two can exercise with us, if you want." The offer was spur-of-the-moment, half-muttered, and incredibly uncertain.

Welcome, Hamask, Hamask's. Arask shrugged off the greenpair's thanks. Glancing over his shoulder again, he eyed his handler. Girl very stupid. What wrong?

I'm not being stupid at all. Nothing's wrong.

Arask had to take a moment to find the right word. Girl awkward.

Ara's cheeks grew more pink, and she clasped her hands behind her back. Well, it's your fault if I am. He had not given her time to prepare, so if she embarrassed the two of them in front of Hama and Hamask, then it was on him. The bluehandler looked over at Hama when the woman rejected her offer to buy their drinks. Her face fell, disappointment stabbing at her for a moment before Hama continued. A slight smirk lifted the corner of her mouth as disappointment was replaced by relief and some amusement. Without hesitation, she followed Hama, emboldened by the fact that the greenhandler hadn't run away yet. "We'll see who gets her marks out faster, then." I'm paying for at least one of her drinks, she decided then and there.

As the two women began to head towards the dining hall, Arask paused, alarm welling up in him. He half-turned around in the corridor, staring long and hard at his Girl's back. Where go? he asked, for their company to hear. Hunt this way.

Please, Arask, not now, Ara pleaded silently, glancing back at him. I'm fine. I'm with Hama. Have fun with Hamask. The wher simply tilted his head.

Ara had fair skin, and Hama thought she could see spots of color rise to her cheeks at Arask's words and the dual meaning they could have had. Hama considered reminding the blue that he already had seen Hamask run, but refrained--though she had no objection to the memories that returned at the thought of it. Hama glanced sidelong at Ara, her mouth curling into a prim smile, feeling a bit of heat suffuse her cheeks as well.

The smile widened to a grin at Ara's invitation. "That sounds wonderful. Exercising is always better with company."

And some exercise, she thought, looking at the pretty bluehandler again, absolutely required company.

Ex-er-size, Hamask repeated, clipping every syllable with unabashed distaste. Would rather relax. She snorted and tossed her head for emphasis.

Hama rolled her eyes. That was precisely why Hamask needed to be hunting for herself; her laziness did not need encouraging. But she let the issue drop, chuckling instead at Ara's response to her offer to buy drinks.

"Or who argues the loudest," came her quick retort--and, by Faranth, Hama meant for that to be her. If she couldn't convince Ara, she would persuade the barkeep instead.

She glanced back at Arask, raising her eyebrows. "Drinking is this way," she said.

Is okay, Hamask said, nudging Arask encouragingly as she trotted past him. We hunt. Will find later! Their handlers would probably be staying put, anyway, anchored to the source of their strange, intoxicating water.

Hama nodded in agreement, lurching back into motion. "So, you've been promoted. Did you seek out the job? Or was it a surprise?"
