Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Perhaps not having spoken to all the remaining candidates, Harrison found that he at least recognized them by sight. He had, by now, grown accustomed to all of their appearances.

So it had the boy tilting his head when a face that he did not know made its way through the barracks. He had been lounging on the couch in the common area, as he was known to do, when the unfamiliar presence passed him. Lifting his gaze, his left brow rose as A'rak strode past.

Who was this man? He wore riding garb. But what business would a rider have in the candidate barracks? Unless-

"Are you a new Candidatemaster?" The words poured from his lips. They weren't exactly chosen carefully and it was far from a proper greeting, but at the moment, Harrison had found that curiosity had gotten the better of him.

It was the only logical explanation, though, wasn't it? What other reason would a rider have to be there?

I’ve already told you he’s not around A’rak Gondath grumbled from his place in the weyr bowl, as A’rak entered the candidates barracks trying to impress the futility of his rider’s insistence to check anyway stretching out his wings like a human throwing their arms up in exasperation one line of communication with Skyth had told him everything and there was nothing to do about it until the blue rider returned.

I know Gondath I know but still I just need to see it for myself…

…you’re just looking to use that as an excuse to visit the place aren’t you

yes yes you got me dead to rights with that Gondy A’rak laughed its been turns since I was here last, and it’d be nice to reacquaint myself with the place again just in case I do get the masters job one day…or at least get to be an assistant of some kind!

Since A’rak’s candidacy days nothing much had changed in the barack’s same pokey rooms and strange air of post hatching gloom that settled like firelizards on to well anything that flitters ‘could’ settle on.

I can see why, they need better décor if they’re going to stand for impression they really ought to stand a bit more class

A’rak was about to reply when someone spoke nearby nearly making him jump with surprise at the external noise, he’d been so wrapped up in his own head, he’d not even noticed the young man when he’d first walked by, “uh no, I’m not a candidate master” A’rak said trying to recover himself so that he hopefully wouldn’t look stupid in front of a potential rider to be. “Though now that you mention it I was actually looking for T’rran do you know if he’s about?” he asked

Harrison thought on the question. He remembered T'rran's face. He was the one who had led the candidates in that one camping lesson. Had he seen anyone like that go by?

It was hard to tell. Harrison had been in a bit of his own world whilst lounging. He simply fell into it. An imaginary run-down of his day including all the things he would and would not be doing. ...What time was it now anyway? He had been sitting for an embarrassingly long time.

He really shouldn't mope and sulk. He knew he shouldn't. But at a time like this, it was instinctive and unavoidable.

Still, looking like he was in thought about the subject and not actually thinking about his own matters, Harrison's silence lingered until he realized this. Finally, with a pout of his lips, he gave the rider a shake of his head. "Haven't seen him," he said. "I don't think the canidatemasters actually hang out here, you know? It's not out of the question for them to pass through but, haven't really seen anyone linger before."

what do you know. I don’t even need to say I told you so Gondath remarked smugly A’rak ignored the dragon and the low rumbling sound Gondath made which was as close to laughter as the brown dragon could get.

“Ah right” A’rak said so intelligently. what had he been thinking? Gondath had said he wasn’t here and he’d actually forgotten how little time the masters really did spend in the barracks, “thanks” he said “I’d honestly forgotten that from my candidate days most I remember of them was they always seemed to be around when mischief was being planned” he laughed having been caught out himself in that fashion “I always thought they had hidden firelizards watching us just to catch us off guard”

A’rak probably could have walked away at that point and left the young man to his thoughts since he was obviously preoccupied with something on his mind but instead he found himself asking out of his own concern “Forgive me if i'm prying but are you all right? Just you seem a bit down and out of it”

He may not have been in the mood to laugh but that didn't mean that Harrison wouldn't give a respecting smirk to the rider's quip. "It does seem like they have spies," he agreed, taking a look around the common area as if searching for a sign of lone flits.

Not one in sight.

He was ready to wish the rider well in his search and be on his way to nowhere in particular when A'rak asked if he was alright. Harrison was, at first, peeved about this. This man didn't know him. Where did he get off asking if he was okay? How on Pern could he tell how he was acting now from his normal disposition?

But then, upon further thought, this acted as a mirror, showing Harrison just how depressed he clearly seemed. If an outsider, who knew nothing of him, could tell that something was off about the boy, then clearly he had been sulking more than he thought. And more than he'd liked.

Still, he dismissed this with an easy wave of his hand. "Yeah, I'm fine," he said. "It's only that we just had a Hatching. As you probably know." If the man knew this, and there was hardly anyone that was involved with the Weyr who didn't, then it was simple to tell why Harrison was upset. The moody edge that had bit at his emotions the last night and today told him that this, therefore, did not even deserve voicing. But this man had done nothing wrong and there was no reason to show him any disrespect. "So those are us that are still here-" said Harrison, taking a long look around the Candidate Barracks, as if, in this one look, he was staring at the entirety of a world in itself. He ended the gesture by, once again, facing the Greenrider. "-are still here. Understandably not too uplifting of a mood around the place today."

Gondath huffed as A’rak nodded his understanding honestly glad that it wasn’t something more serious, I fail to see why he’s upset about the ‘hatching’ of all things Gondath said you’re chosen or you're not, dragons get the choice so why is he miserable about what he can’t control? It makes no sense

it wouldn’t to you Gondy, for dragons you pop out of the shell and there is everyone cheering you on and you find your life mate almost instantly and you know what you’re worth as a born pern protector, for us people its not that simple A’rak said trying to explain somethings to the brown, was a fruitless task indeed, how could one put the hurt feelings after a hatching rejection?

“As hollow as the words may sound coming from a rider, you know a few hatching’s are not the end of the world” he said as he took a seat so he wasn’t looming over Harrison and talking down at him “You’re what? Nineteen? Twenty turns? There’s plenty of time for your dragon to find you, I was searched when I was eighteen, I’d nearly aged out when my Gondath hatched”

You know he didn’t ask for our life story A’rak

Shut up

“I’m guess I’m just trying to say if it’s gonna happen for ya it’ll happen.”

yes I like how it all boils down to my sentiments

Harrison smiled back to the best of his ability. He could tell that this rider was only trying to do his best to help and genuinely meant well. "It doesn't sound hollow." But still, he could not completely overcome his disappointment. Not at A'rak, but at how fate had played out. "Thanks." In the end, it was this that sounded hollow. Though he really had not intended for it to.

The truth was that while most of his angst - and certainly his bitterness - had been done away with during the night before, thanks to his talk with Kellyn and her insistence that they attend the hatching feast despite not Impressing, he knew that some of his negativity would take time. It would surely dissipate and A'rak was right. This was far from Harrison's one and only chance to Impress.

But he knew that this was a wound of pride, and one that would have to go away slowly over the course of days or weeks. "I just always thought it would happen yesterday. If you know what I mean." That had not been the most precise way of saying it, but for now it would have to do. Harrison wasn't one to correct himself. This was not usually an issue as he was, typically, a fast-thinker and a very good speaker. This time, evidently, he had been just enough out of sorts that it affected the clarity of his words.

Something else that would just have to go back to normal with time.

“no problem yeah I think I know what you mean,” A’rak nodded sympathetically “when a clutch is on the sand, regardless of how much you tell yourself ‘don’t be excited the dragons could chose anyone’ theres always a part that without fail another part that says ‘my dragon is there, and waiting for me and me alone’ and if you’re wrong the next bout of waiting tears into your heart like someone thrust a knife into ya” he said maybe he was just projecting but he could see a lot of himself at that age in Harrison, he really hoped that he wouldn’t have so long a wait for his dragon ahead of him as A’rak had or worse a long wait and steady painful age out as he knew many did.

A’rak ran a hand through his hair “if it helps from sitting and talking with you I don’t think you’ll be a candidate for too much longer, a young man like you’ll get a dragon in your head before you know it, then you’ll be begging for candidacy again not only will you be so busy with your lifemate but you’ll also quickly find out that the voice in your head never shuts up” he added the last part jokingly as a jab at Gondath who predictably responded

Pay A’rak no heed, we’re only that way when our rider’s insist on being foolish the brown huffed speaking to Harrison as well as his rider.

“you can see what I mean?” A’rak laughed before he became thoughtful “you know when I was down about things I always found that doing something always helped, Gondath and I were planning to go for a flight today you’d be welcome to come along if you’d like? I find the air great to clear the head when things are bothering me”

I would not mind the extra passenger, it might be nice to have companyfor once that is in possession of all their wits. the brown’s statement could have been construed as a slight on his rider but there was a distinct warmth and fondness in Gondath’s tones that softened the dragon’s words.

It was always good to hear that someone understood. Harrison knew that, eventually, the defeated feeling that rested within his chest would completely leave him, but for the moment, while it was lingering, to find others who understood how he felt was comforting. This situation was especially so. A'rak had no reason to seek to empathize with Harrison. After all, he was already a rider. This was a circumstance which could never affect him - well, not anymore.

Harrison gave a solemn and thankful nod of his head. And it seemed to be at that moment, that another voice came into it. No matter how many candidate lessons he'd attended, where he'd had this exact same sensation beforehand, he could never seem to grow used to it. It always came as somewhat of an exhilarating surprise.

The Brownrider's banter with his dragon had Harrison smiling. It was only through experience that he noticed that this was what he wanted - a relationship like this with a dragon. It wasn't about the glory and prestige that being a dragonrider brought. It was about the bond that was formed.

His eyes widened at A'rak's offer. He hadn't been expecting that. "Uh...yeah!" His hesitance rang with the shock that he felt, disbelief causing him to laugh on the word. Harrison's lips quirked up into a crooked smile, excitement and honor resonating clearly from the expression. "Are you sure?" he asked. "Oh, I'm Harrison, by the way." The offer of the name was punctuated with an extension of his hand.
