Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Sometimes it was hard to believe that Jhexath would one day mature into one of the graceful giants that populated the Weyr. He was so tiny, so clumsy right now that O'lly spent much of his time helping the little blue along and keeping him from knocking his chin against the ground. Would he really be big enough to carry him one day? At the moment he was small enough to be carried in his arm like a dog...although his dignity prevented that easy solution to getting around.

I'm already unhappy about this trip, his dragon responded piteously. Everyone will stare at me if you're carrying me around like a fire lizard. He scurried alongside O'lly, head down, shooting furtive looks at the barracks. They weren't his barracks and they were full of people he didn't know.

"You could have stayed in bed," O'lly pointed out with a smile. He was gentle and accommodating with his dragon, but he didn't encourage his antisocial nature one bit. People - or dragon - skills were just as important as learning to fly or flame thread. If Jhexath was his living voice of reason, he was his dragon's sense of adventure.

You needed to be supervised. When his rider had the nerve to laugh at him, he bumped into his ankles reproachfully. I'm serious! Okrenth told me that her rider talks about all the trouble you used to get into in that place! I can't let you go alone!

"I'm just going back to find some stuff I left, Jhex. I'm not going to get in trouble. That's sweet though."

The barracks were distressingly empty, but after that enormous clutch O'lly wasn't particularly surprised. Still, he and Jhexath attracted more than a few curious looks. Were they lost? Rubbing it in? Jhexath pressed himself against his rider's legs and whined. Let's just get what you came for and leave! People are staring.

Viviette prodded at the canvas bag in her hands, hoping it would be thin enough to allow the smells of the dried herbs she was packing inside of it through. They were something she'd made when she was young for the healer rooms to help cover the smells of decay and sickness. Now she was making them because she was bored and it reminded her of home. The herbs had been easy to get her hands on. It didn't take expensive leaves, just smelly ones. She frowned, all the local flora was unrecognized by her, the desert climate was completely different from her native swamplands. Harsher, with different sounds at night to make her jump.

What she really needed to do was approach a healer or two during her free time, volunteer for extra training, dive into learning dragon healing and more advanced human healing too. That would be a distraction from all her inner turmoil over self-worth, fears and anxieties. She could do that tomorrow, it was late tonight and disturbing a healer's moment of rest would be more likely to earn her a swat about the head then a makeshift apprenticeship. Viviette threaded a coarse string through the bag, finishing the aromatic bundle with a pull and a bow. Some of the new weyrlings might want one, she'd heard they had to shovel the dragon's shaffit until they learned to go Between. Having a dragon must be wonderful to be worth a chore like that. Candidates who got in trouble often ended up stuck with that job too, but she wasn't a part of that crowd.

A voice from the hall pulled her from her thoughts. “Is someone there?” There were few candidates left, and that didn't sound like any of them. She poked her head out the door, curious, not too worried about them seeing her in lay-about clothes. They were old but provided coverage, a short sleeve button up and loose cotton pants. Her hair was unbraided and tangled, a mess to be sorted in the morning.

What she saw was not what she expected. A boy and a tiny blue dragon, beautifully colored. The candidate nearly ducked back inside, but a spark of curiosity kept her from disappearing. “Hello. Are you, um, looking for someone?” Maybe he had a friend who hadn't impressed.

How many candidates were left? O'lly knew that after every large clutch, there was always a handful that simply went home or aged out. On the heels of that thought, Jhexath squealed and ducked behind his leg, a split second before an unfamiliar face peeked out at them. The blue peered back at the candidate through the gap between O'lly's legs until, with an amused smile, his treacherous rider stepped aside, leaving him vulnerable to her curious gaze.

Oh stop. What's a candidate gonna do? She probably thinks you're amazing.

You don't know that! She's looking at me... Jhexath flared his wings as if to ward off attack. This place was trouble, Okrenth had told him so!

But the bluerider just smiled and raised a hand in casual greeting, sending waves of reassurance his dragon's way. "I'm not looking for anyone but maybe you can help me? I'm O'lly and this is Jhexath. I just Impressed a bit ago and I forgot some of my stuff here in the barracks. Do you know if they've already cleaned out the old rooms yet?"

Slowly, Jhexath un-tensed and let his stiff wings fall back down into a less bristly position. He didn't quite relax, but he didn't look prepared to flee either. O'lly was right; he might not like the scrutiny of this candidate, but she certainly meant him no harm. Candidates wanted dragons of their own. If anything, she was admiring. He preferred this to perhaps running into someone who might be resentful of his presence in the barracks.

When the little blue squawked Viviette nearly mirrored his actions, gripping the doorway, eyes widening, it would be easy to duck back inside and none would be the wiser. But despite the dragon's alarm the weyrling looked perfectly at ease. The girl's gaze ventured back down to the hatchling as the boy stepped aside to allow easier viewing, and she stifled a giggle.

Are they opposites? she wondered as the blue raised his wings defensively and his partner waved a 'hello'. Viviette didn't wave back, having not yet pried her fingers from the wood, but she smiled. That made sense, and how easy it must be to forget everything else when you had a dragon. “I think they did. There's a big box in the main room full of stuff. I hadn't thought about it before, but it might be all of the belongings your... class? Left behind.” That was how they referred to the groups of weyrlings right, a class? Not a clutch, that was the eggs. “I'll, um, I'll show you.” Now the candidate separated from the safety of her tiny home in the barracks, fully hers as her roommate had collected her things and moved on. The dragon didn't look ready to run away/bite her ankles off anymore, but when she walked around the pair she still gave him plenty of space. Either of those options would be horrifying, better to be cautious.

“I'm Viviette.” She said as an afterthought. Another glance back at Jhexath, less curious and more puzzled at the blue's behavior. Maybe she was missing something? “Is he okay? This was my first hatching, so I don't know how baby dragons are supposed to be, but I'm not going to step on him or grab him or anything.” They were serious words, perhaps that was a fear for a baby dragon. When you knew you were going to get very large being very small must be uncomfortable. It was a quick trip down the hall and she pointed into the far corner of the common room at a large wooden crate full of miscellaneous matter. “There, you might look in that. I could help, what did you leave?”

O'lly waved a hand, unconcerned. "He's fine. He's just not big into socializing. Thinks strangers are dangerous. He'll lighten up here in a minute; he knows no harm will come to him with me around."

His lips twisted into a smile when Jhexath snorted and moved to walk on his opposite side, away from the candidate. His body language had changed, less fight or flight and more cautious and tentatively relaxed. "Every dragon is different, though. Just like people. My friend's gold speaks to everyone, acts like she rules the place. Guess she might someday."

I would be okay with that, Jhexath muttered.

O'lly only just muffled a laugh. Don't let Cirseth hear you say that!

When he bent to examine the box, he was alarmed by the sheer amount of stuff left behind. Apparently he hadn't been the only one to be so swept up in the wonder of Impression that they'd forgotten most of their worldly goods. Hopefully his good work clothes hadn't been snatched up by candidates - although he would hardly begrudge them chore apparel if they had.

"There's few pairs of breeches that are mine. And a blue wherhide belt. Also my sandals..."

Viviette was skeptical that anything could find her to be a threat, but her brother had cried when he was a newborn if anyone but their mom had held him, so maybe it was normal. Of course human babies also didn't immediately start talking and walking so there were some obvious differences. “If she's a gold she should act like that?” The candidate gave O'lly a long look, wondering how he'd come to know the new junior weyrwoman. I guess in candidacy everyone is the same, the ranks only separate later... That was a weird thought. It challenged a lot of what she'd been taught about the whole concept of ranks. Huh. Her eyebrows scrunched as she stored that trail of thought for later, when she wasn't helping someone go through a large and slightly rank box of belongings. O'lly's long list of items made her giggle before she joined him in sorting.

“You can tell not everyone washes their clothes enough.” Viviette held up a sock with holes in heel and toe. “I'm surprised we can't see the smell from this.” She tossed it away from them as she stuck out her tongue in disgust, forgetting that Jhexath was standing in that direction. “Should we, um, dump it out? Something blue might stand out.” After finding the sock, and realizing other undergarments might be tossed in the crate with everything else, she was more hesitant to stick her hand in and pull out whatever fabric they landed on. “Next hatching I'm going to go ahead and pack my things, just in case.” The attempt at a humorous tone fell flat, it was too soon, the rejection of over two dozen eggs would sting for a while. “Sorry, I'm not good at joking.” With as little skin touching the leather as possible she held up a sandal. "This one yours?"
