Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Talora had sent down the announcement that morning, and Aniese was surprised—and cursing herself for being surprised. Was she really so far out of the loop that she hadn’t realized Rayna’s successor would be appointed soon? That she didn’t even know who Rayna’s successor would be?

Well, this was one push too far over the edge for Aniese. She might be living on the Sands at the moment, and she might be spending much of her time there, keeping Rezeirth company and making sure the Gold was calm, but that was no excuse for being this clueless about Weyr affairs. Especially when she was supposed to have a relationship with the Lower Caverns staff.

So Aniese bid Rezeirth goodbye midmorning and trotted briskly to the Lower Caverns. Her stress, her exhaustion, the toll of this month was still there, but she could push it away more easily at the moment. Her interest in this new woman, this ‘Aerella’ was enough to distract her.

What would she be like? She was meant to be old enough to be competent, so… that was something. Rather than some young, untrained appointee.

But Aniese had no real knowledge about the woman.

She ducked into the Caverns and stopped a passing drudge to ask where the Headwoman was.

“In her office, Goldrider, but not for long,” was the response.

Aniese nodded and moved down the hall to Aerella’s new offices, then knocked. Time to see for herself.

If Aerella were honest with herself, the summons to Talora's Weyr hadn't come as a surprise. That hadn't stopped the irrational tightening in her stomach, but the meeting had gone well. Vaioa had a new Headwoman, and Aerella had a whole slew of new responsibilities. For which she was absolutely capable. True, she was younger than most probably preferred in their Headwoman, but assigning the duty to someone in her sixth decade would only mean finding a replacement sooner. Life, after all.

Her life had gotten a whole lot busier since taking up the mantle of her promotion, and Aerella was having to reorganize certain aspects of the Lower Caverns. Going without a Headwoman for a while meant that there were certain...corners that had been cut and bad habits that had developed in some of the staff. Nothing terribly detrimental to the health of the Weyr, of course, but Aerella was determined to have the Lower Caverns working like a well-oiled machine or, better yet, a fighting Wing. To each their part and duty and hopefully she wouldn't have to micromanage.

Too much.

Mid-morning and already on her fifth mug of tea, Aerella spent a rare candlemark in her office. Her new office. An actual office, not just a shared work space. Her first task had been to organize her notebooks and the various Records she needed to keep, so that left the space utilitarian until Aerella had time to make it personal.

"Here are the reports you asked for, Headwoman," one of Aerella's staff supplied a stack of hides before Aerella dismissed her to other duties. She sipped her tea and bent over the stack before checking the candlemark. She had a lunch meeting to attend, so she couldn't lose herself in the tracking of tithes. Thankfully Mint was passed out asleep on the corner of Aerella's desk, so the Headwoman didn't need to worry about her for the time being.

One of her worries just so happened to knock on the door.

"Goldrider!" Aerella said with no shortage of surprise. She stood quickly and gestured inside. "Please, do come in. I'm surprised your dragon allowed you off the Sands." Though Aerella knew little about Aniese, she at least knew the goldrider on sight. All of the Weyr should at least be able to recognize the queenriders, Weyrleaders, and top-ranking riders like Wingleaders. If they didn't, their education was sorely lacking.

"Would you like tea or klah?" she offered, heading for the small hearth with its kettle. Aniese looked like she could use several days of sleep, but that was a common look on any rider with a brooding female.

(( T_T SO sorry for the lateness))

Aniese grinned at the woman who was standing on the other side of the doorway. Now that she saw Aerella, she did recognize her, if only by face. Relieved that she was able to perform, well, a semblance of her job, as well as calmed by the woman’s no-nonsense appearance—dark hair and bright skin reflecting, at the least, good grooming—she stepped inside.

“Thank you. I’m sorry to drop in unannounced, but… I heard that you were promoted and I thought I would come congratulate you as well as properly introduce myself.”

Aniese’s smile faded slightly. The truth was, Aerella had probably been in the Lower Caverns when Aniese herself had been. But Aniese was confident that she had never spoken to the older woman. That, she was sure, she’d remember.

The Goldrider settled on the spare chair and managed another gracious smile. “Rezeirth has been particular about my company lately,” she said brightly, “but today she seemed confident enough about being alone for a candlemark or so while I dashed out. Not that she’s alone, she’s got Melacyth,” Aniese reflected. “And no, thank you though,” she added, waving away the offer of a beverage.

“I have to say, it is so nice to see that Talora has finally appointed someone. Your space is very… neat.” Aniese glanced around the utilitarian room and smiled back at Aerella. It would be; the woman hadn’t had much time to make a mess of it. But still, that wouldn’t have stopped some people from already making a mess of it. So far, Aerella seemed to be a promising sort. Aniese hoped fervently that this would continue; having a well-functioning Lower Caverns was essential to the running of the entire Weyr, however many people knew it or not.

“I take it you were happy to receive the promotion?” No harm if she hadn’t been overjoyed, but Aniese couldn’t see Talora appointing someone who was reluctant to take the role.

((pfffft you think you're late... ))

Ah yes. Proper introductions. Aerella's transfer hadn't given a whole lot of time for introductions. Not that she'd come to Vaioa with rank that necessitated introductions. Her orientation had included the ranking riders being pointed out to her plus a few tidbits about each in addition to any names Aerella might recognize. It wasn't uncommon for second or third sons of Lords to try their hand at Impression, after all. She wasn't as familiar with local dignitaries as she'd like to be, but that would come with time. She'd only been in Vaioa a matter of months, after all.

Certainly not enough time to learn everything. Shards, she was still learning the names of the Lower Caverns staff.

"No apology necessary, weyrwoman," she assured, pouring herself a mug of klah when Aniese declined. Yes, klah. Not tea. She'd need it before her lunch meeting. "I understand that brooding females can be demanding," was said with a sympathetic smile as she claimed the other unoccupied chair. That wasn't behind her desk, anyway. This wasn't an interview, and Aerella wanted the younger woman to feel more comfortable. Being cooped up in the Sands all day... No, Aerella didn't envy Aniese that chore.

She sipped her klah and smiled at the complement. Neat. Yes, that was one way to put it. Then again, it was hard to make something chaotic when it hadn't been used in a while. Aerella couldn't ever get a straight answer from people when she asked exactly how long the Weyr had been without a Headwoman, but judging by the dust, she guessed 'a while' was also an understatement.

"I'm settling in quite well, I like to think," she nodded with a smile. "I hadn't expected it to happen so soon. There were other assistants who have been here far longer than I have." Though that didn't speak highly of them, all things considered, since none of them had been promoted, but they would have received precedence over a transfer like Aerella. And given that transfers among Weyrs, even of Lower Caverns staff, were not at all common, to say Aerella came for the climate was a dead lie. "To be frank, I transferred to Vaioa because of the open position. Igen's Headwoman is only a few turns my senior, and as her assistant, I had no further to climb there." Ambitious? Absolutely.

"Long story short, yes I'm quite pleased," she said after a brief pause, realizing how she'd prattled on like a moonstruck wherry. She took a sip from her mug. "Since we will be working together in the future, if you don't mind me asking, how long have you and your Rezeirth been bonded?"

Aniese blinked but recovered her surprise quickly, trying not to show it. A transfer, then, and not somebody who had worked their way up from being within Vaioa’s lower caverns. Her face must have been familiar because Aniese had seen the woman since she transferred.

“Well,” she said with a forced smile, “nothing wrong with having career aspirations!” As long as it wasn’t full-blown megalomania, Aniese thought with not a small twinge of guilt. But she had outgrown those desires long ago.

“I gather you’ve settled in to Vaioa some time ago, and no doubt you’re finding your way around your position fairly as well, but… if you do need anything, just let me know,” Aniese said. “We should be able to work together, after all.”

She grinned at Aerella’s next sentiments, echoing those Aniese had just voiced. Then her expression softened. “Three Turns. I Impressed when I was very close to Aging out. I was Searched when I was very close to Aging out, come to think of it,” Aniese said with a chuckle. Technically there had been two clutches in the time she had been Searched, but she had not accepted her candidacy in time to Stand for the first one. Rhias had seen to it that she didn’t miss the second. She smiled fondly at the memory, both her own foolishness and the wonderful times it had brought her.

She cleared her throat and glanced back at Aerella. She hadn’t meant to get lost in thought. “I enjoy helping out in the Lower Caverns as much as I can,” she confessed, “probably because I worked here before I was Searched. I would say that you’ll be seeing all of the Queenriders periodically, but when we split our duties I usually take a bigger share of the Lower Caverns work than any of the others.” She smiled. “So I’m sure I’ll be here often, but I thought I should tell you, unfortunately, I can’t stand the fumes from brewing numbweed.” She gave an embarrassed grimace. “I can apply the paste just fine, but something about the steam and the process just irritates my skin and my nose like nothing I’ve known before. It’s horrible, really. But you’ll probably work with one of the other Queenriders during brewing season.” Aniese had spent long enough feeling guilty over it—it was one of her duties—but she’d come to accept that she was of much more use in the Infirmary than she was in the Lower Caverns, where she’d be coughing and sneezing and dizzy and useless.
