Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kellyn had been at Vaioa for exactly a month when it occurred to her she had yet to see her mother. Her duties as candidate and her determination to familiarize herself with her peers had kept her busy the entire time. It was only when she finished up her chores and was heading back to the barracks to clean up that she overhead mention of the new headwoman. She slowed her steps, politely infiltrated the conversation, and within minutes was headed for the lower caverns instead.

Headwoman! Her mother had been the assistant back at Igen, but to hear she had been promoted to one of the most important roles of a Weyr... She felt pride, tinged with a small amount of guilt. She should've sought Aerella out earlier, when she first arrived. The only plus side to the surprise was that her mother didn't even know she was there, and therefore didn't realize she had neglected to see her for far too long.

Inside the lower caverns, Kellyn engaged the various drudges and other workers she could find to track down her mother. She was a very busy woman now, but even busy women needed to eat. That led the candidate to the dining hall and she found a vacant table, perfectly within sight of the entry, and set a place across from her with fresh, steaming food and a nice cup of tea. She didn't yet touch her own food.

Hazel found her there, appearing with a chatter of disapproval for not immediately notifying him she was done with chores. She wouldn't allow him to accompany her to the infirmary--there were too many people and she couldn't possibly keep an eye on him the entire time. She soothed him with bits of meat and he settled in her lap, curled up contentedly while she waited.

Soon enough, Aerella made her appearance and Kellyn glanced up, chin on her hand. It had been a turn since she'd last seen her mother, but she didn't rise to greet her. She did straighten, however, smiling when they made eye contact. "Hi mom."

When she'd thrown her hat into the ring for the open Headwoman position at Vaioa, Aerella knew that she had her work cut out for her. The other assistants who had kept the Lower Caverns running went from being relative equals to subordinates. Some weren't happy with the change and had made the transition a difficult one, but the general mood Aerella noticed surrounding the office was relief.

Now it just left Aerella with a whole lot of work to do.

"Ensure the guest suites are prepared. With the eggs hardening, we'll have Holders and Traders arriving soon. If Lord Thorgan arrives, don't antagonize him. I'll not be the thorn in his side to cause another rebellion. Some delegates from Crom may also attend to check the growth of the recent wherlings. Make sure the Wherlingmasters are informed and we'll hope they do something with that information. And would someone please control whatever weyrbrat is putting fake tunnelsnakes in the flour stores?"

One thing was for sure, when Aerella took charge, she took charge. After the Roselite graduation, she stepped fully into her new role with the Weyrwoman's blessing. Talora put a lot of faith in a near stranger, but Aerella apparently had made quite the impression in her turn in Vaioa. Still, that didn't mean the job was any easier. She only had a fresh set of eyes and experiences and a pedigree even Holders couldn't dispute.

"Is that all, Headwoman?" one of the aids asked as Aerella checked her notebook once more. Going down her checklist for that day, Aerella nodded. "Enjoy your evenings. I'll see you all in the morning." After they'd dispersed, Aerella took a deep breath and sighed. She still had a few things to do, but it was passed time for a strong cup of tea.

Out of the resulting silence, a pop announced that Mint was awake and eager for her beloved. The green landed on Aerella's shoulder and pressed against her neck. "Ah there you are," Aerella chuckled as she headed for the dining hall, rubbing the green hatchling's back. "You are hungry too, I assume." Mint chirped a response, but Aerella didn't pay attention, not at the wave she received when walking into the dining hall.

"Kellyn," she breathed and immediately headed for her table. Shards, when had her daughter arrived? Last she'd seen, Kellyn was a Candidate in Igen. Had Aerella missed something? How could she be so uninvolved? Shoving away that line of thought, Aerella smiled as she approached her daughter's table and took a seat. "How are you, darling? I wasn't aware you'd decided to transfer. Are you settling in well?"

Just call her a concerned mother. After a turn, here was her daughter. Her youngest. Mint, from Aerella's shoulder, chirped a greeting herself.

If Aerella was surprised to see her daughter, she hid it well. Kellyn was used to her mother's professionalism, though, and knew she was likely keeping up her airs where others could see. It didn't bother her. She simply kept smiling and gestured at the food set out once her mother had taken a seat.

"I figured you would be hungry, Headwoman," she said, stressing the title. Pride practically oozed out of her pores. "I only just heard today. Congratulations!" She beamed, stroking a finger along Hazel's spine as he poked his head into view. He crooned sweetly to the green and the candidate glanced toward the hatchling as well. "And who's this? Such a cute little lady." She'd never expected her mother to take on one of the little critters. She'd always assumed she saw them as nuisances, but there was a first time for everything.

Returning to the questions, Kellyn smiled and sipped at her cup of tea. Her mother had taught her well--she preferred it to klah any day. "I'm doing great. The transfer was a... spur-of-the-moment decision. Sorry I didn't write to tell you. I figured you'd be busy getting this Weyr into shape." She grinned and glanced pointedly at the knots on her mother's shoulder. "Looks like I was right."

Pausing to take a bite of food-Faranth, she was famished-she chewed thoroughly and swallowed before answering the next question. With gusto. "Vaioa is amazing! So different from Igen, and the people! My roommate is a very proper woman, all books and smarts. And the other candidates are all so delightful. There's this one mopey one, though, that might need a pep talk or something. Casimir is his name. He constantly looks like somebody stole his breadroll," she chattered, happily tearing up a piece of meat and passing them to Hazel.

Finally realizing how much she had spoken and how little she knew of her mother's experiences there, she gave a sheepish look. "But how is it going for you? I heard there hadn't been a headwoman in a while. It must be tiring, getting everything organized again."

Surprised might not have been the exact word Aerella would use to describe what she felt just then. Shock was certainly there, as was pride and pleasure, but she wouldn't put it passed Kellyn to do whatever the shards she well pleased when it came to her own future. It gave the new Headwoman a distinct sense of pride as she partook of the tea her daughter was so considerate to provide.

Just as she took it, too, which gave her another reason to smile besides Kellyn's congratulations. Aerella nodded and waved it off demurely. Did she take pride in her accomplishment? Absolutely. Not many women reached her post at her age, but hubris was unnecessary. Mint, however, was perfectly willing to be proud and preened for the brown who peeked from Kellyn's lap.

"Oh her? Mmm yes, this is Mint. A very recent change," she allowed, still not quite sure what she thought about impressing the small creature. From what Aerella could tell, Mint was dumb as a stump, but she was the happiest creature Aerella had ever encountered. "You know me. Always looking for something to care for," she finished with a raised eyebrow and a sip of tea.

Which was exactly why she was so interested in how Kellyn was adjusting. It thrilled her to hear that her daughter had settled in so well--and quickly!--and had already started making friends. Aerella couldn't help the smirk at the mention of Casimir's name, though. Hopefully that wasn't rude. Because when was Aerella ever concerned about rudeness? Mostly just around visiting Holders who had very stiff notions of propriety.

"I've had the pleasure of meeting Casimir, though I'm fairly certain he had no idea who I was at the time," she chuckled. "In his defense, I was still an assistant at the time and not wearing my knots, and I'm told I can look like just another Crechemother if I try hard enough," she finished after raising a hand to forestall any imagined protests. She took a sip of tea before mimicking Kellyn in feeding Mint. The hatchling slipped to the table since that's where all the best stuff was and unsuccessfully tried sneaking an extra bite.

"I taught you manners too well," she laughed and leaned back in her seat, cradling her tea. "The post has been empty for three or five turns, depending on who you ask, so really who's to say? The Weyrwoman saw fit to task me with steering the chaos, so that's what I've been doing. But that'll bore you to tears. It does me most days, trust me." Her humor was in good form this evening, her mood significantly lightened by this surprise. "Truthfully, are you settled in well? The weavers here have remarkable skill with light yet very stylish clothing. Here I thought Igen was hot."

It was nice to sit back and relax, just chatting with her mother like she used to. She hadn't realized how much she missed her mom until that moment, watching her sip her tea in that familiar way, the slight smile when she realized it was exactly how she liked it. Kellyn found herself smiling back, actually entirely comfortable for the first time since she arrived. What was it about a mother's presence that made things so much easier?

Kellyn giggled as Hazel clambered off her lap, cooing at Mint like he'd never seen a female before. He'd seen plenty, certainly, but she was perhaps the first one that hadn't turned away from him immediately. "She's precious. Mint, you said?" She poked Hazel's tail, but he ignored her, busy trying to hold the green's attention. "Mint and Hazel. We've got the makings of something delicious." She chuckled, tilting her head at her mother's words. Yes, she has always been a very caring woman. Mothering everyone, not just her children.

The smirk didn't escape her notice and she raised a questioning eyebrow. A moment later, Aerella gave an explanation and the candidate laughed. "Faranth, I wouldn't put it past him! He seems like the oblivious type. He didn't even realize I stood behind him until I spoke, and I think I nearly scared him half to death." She paused, opening her mouth to inform her mother she certainly did not look like just any crechemother, but the hand stopped her comment. She let it slide, sipping her own tea thoughtfully.

She didn't stifle her next protest, though, leaning forward. "Mother! I mean- Headwoman." She cast a quick glance around, making sure her slip hadn't been noticed. "You know I love hearing about your work," she insisted. But it didn't seem meant to be. Aerella pressed on without a care and Kellyn huff. "Really, you don't need to fuss at me. I am honestly doing great. I've even found a new target." Her smile turned mischievous and she swirled her tea slightly.

She had never made it a secret her little hobby of trying to reform people she dubbed... high-maintenance in some way. "He's quite a charmer. Tried to flirt with me right off the bat." She thought fondly of her first meeting with Harrison and shook her head, amused. "I constantly have to keep my guard up around him. Otherwise, he might succeed in--" Oh. Oh, wait. This was her mother. She was definitely not going to talk about rolling in the furs with other candidates to her mother. "...iiiin besting me. We raced around the weyrbowl the first time we met. Lot of fun." Yeah, like she was buying that. But Kellyn kept the innocent smile on her face, regardless, hoping Aerella would at least let it slide.

Aerella honestly hadn't expected any of her children to follow her in her transfer. Living in a desert wasn't exactly the most glamorous place. Dust got everywhere, and Aerella swore she wiped a layer of it off her desk every morning. For someone like Kellyn, whose life had been in Igen, Aerella had expected her to remain there, grow her friendships and connections in that Weyr, not follow her mother to a strange new place only to have to forge new connections. Not that Aerella thought her daughter incapable, it was just...well. Aerella mothering.

To say she was thrilled for Kellyn's decision would have been a grave understatement. She was certain that, if it weren't for the Weyr's Creche and foster system, she never have moved for the sake of her children. Now she was here, Headwoman, and thus better able to provide for the daughter who followed. She let herself dwell in the happy moment, sipping her tea and nodding agreement at the choice of firelizard names. Mint, for her part, lifted her head coyly at Hazel and tossed her tail.

"You'd never know she hatched last sevenday," Aerella commented off-handedly, though she nearly choked on her tea thanks to Kellyn's own experience with one named Casimir. "Knowing that, I'm glad I didn't tell him. He'll have plenty of time to be mortified whenever he finds out," what with everyone calling her Headwoman wherever she went. And she hated taking such amusement from embarrassing the poor boy, but she couldn't help her smirk. One that didn't leave any time soon.

"Oh please, I have enough people calling me that. I don't need it from my own daughter," she protested with a laugh, not caring if someone nearby did hear Kellyn. It was after candlemarks the moment she'd seen her daughter sitting at a table as far as Aerella was concerned. Titles could wait. Especially when stories were in play. Aerella leaned forward to hear of Kellyn's latest target.

Except... Aerella raised a brow at Kellyn's stumble and gave the girl a knowing look. If the boy flirted 'right off the bat,' there was no way racing around the Bowl was the only thing on his mind. Nor Kellyn's if Aerella's suspicions were true. "Right," she drawled with exaggerated ease just to let Kellyn squirm a little. And, just because it was a parent's prerogative to embarrass their child... "If you ever need racing tips, darling, I've won a few over the turns."

Cue casual sip of tea.
