Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was just the start of the day for Dennai and Dennask and getting breakfast prepared for a wher when one is drowsy from sleep was no easy task. Mid-preparation, Dennai had to reach up and give himself some sharp pats to his cheeks.

He hoped this would help. He'd seen others do it in the past. It didn't. With a sigh - somewhere in it was hidden the relinquishing word 'okay' - he went back to working on Dennask's meal.

Only to receive a bump to his leg. It wasn't too tough, but for as fresh from sleep as he was, it was enough to make Dennai stumble. "Hey!" he exclaimed. "What's the matter, huh?"

Dennai taking too long, said Dennask. Want to eat!

"Take it easy!" said Dennai. "It's coming, I just gotta finish making it up."

Dennask no picky, assured the wher. Dennask will eat it as it is.

"Alright, okay." Dennai knew now he was being rushed, so he worked through a few final slices as quickly as he could, while still being careful. "Just let me finish up this last- hey." His stomach growled loud. "Hey! Did you just do that? Did you just send me that wave of hunger to get me to hurry up? I'm going!"

Dennask no know what Dennai talking about. Dennask did not do such a good job feigning innocence. Dennask just really that hungry.

"Alright, alright." And with that, he set down the bowl of food. Dennask went to it immediately. Eyes on his wher, Dennai let out another sigh and then moved to the floor.

Dennask ceased when he spotted his handler. Dennai not want to sit that close, cautioned the wher. Dennask get nice-smelling Dennai dirty before day start.

"Oh. Okay. Well, thanks for the warning." With a gracious nod, Dennai slid further away from the young Bronze. Holding his knees to his chest, he let his gaze wander over the area, catching sight of a familiar face. Instantly he smiled and he lifted a hand to wave. "Hey Avaia!"

It was quite an adjustment, having another mind inside her head. Avaia had grown used to Apa's slight bursts of emotion, but they paled in comparison to the broken sentences and floods of feeling Avask used to communicate. The brown and blue's first meeting had been rather overwhelming, and it had taken a lot of soothing to get the ornery flitter to back down and accept the new addition to the family. Avask, on the other, found the little blue delightful and quickly adopted him. After Apa was assured that Avaia wouldn't start ignoring him, he relented.

The pair still made the evenings interesting, though. As Avaia led the way to fix up breakfast, Apa squawking loudly on her shoulder and Avask trotting beside her like some sort of pudgy canine, she wherling found herself feeling sluggish. Normally mornings (or evenings, as it was for the wherfolk) were easy for her, but waking up and tending to two babies was starting to take its toll.

She stifled a yawn as she gathered up Avask's meal, eyes glazed slightly with sleepiness. She flicked small pieces of meat to Apa until he was full enough is sides bulged, and then the blue settled down to nap. She eyed him enviously.

SmellGood, Avask remarked happily.

Avaia glanced down at him. "It will be ready in a moment."

No, no. SmellGood. His gaze was directed across the room and she frowned, following his line of sight to...

"Oh, you mean Dennai?" She smiled and waved back to the other wherling, her hand smeared with gore. She paused, thinking back to the hatching when she'd first met him. "He does smell good, doesn't he?"

Ava friend? Avask asked, looking up at her again.

She gathered up the bucket of slop in one hand and Apa in the other and headed toward Dennai and his lovely bronze, nodding. "Recent friend, yes. I met him at your hatching, in fact." She smiled as they approached, setting the bucket down for for Avask a little ways away from Dennask.

Avask stared at Dennai for a moment, snorting, and then stuffed his head into the bucket to feed. Still smell good.

Avaia giggled and plopped down next to the boy, cradling Apa in her lap. "Hi Dennai. How are you settling in? This is... much different than anything I ever planned on," she stated, looking fondly at her little brown.

Hearing the brown wherlet's comments, Dennai could do nothing to stifle his smile. Color threatened to rise on his cheeks. "Heh! Good to know that I'm thought of so highly." Apparently he was gaining quite a bit of a reputation.

At this, Dennask raised his head from his bowl, looking vaguely affronted. Dennask tell Dennai that he smell good. Why Dennai no believe Dennask?

"I believed you!" said Dennai immediately. "I'm just-" This was such a strange conversation. He couldn't believe he was even talking about this. And if Dennai hadn't been blushing before, he surely was now. Embarrassed, he rubbed at the back of his neck. "It's interesting to hear that it's sort of a universal opinion - that's all."

Still, the Bronze seemed offended. He snuffed, holding his head high for a moment before plunging it back into his breakfast. Dennask know best.

Nonplused at this particular proceeding of early morning events, Dennai looked to Avaia with wide, exasperated eyes and a crooked smile, a sigh that caused his shoulders to rise as he took it in escaping through his nose. "It's certainly something," he answered. "But, you know, we're doing alright." He took this moment to attempt to lean closer to the fellow wherling, but as he got (what Dennask felt was) too close, risking marring his appearance and his scent - which was apparently all the rage - Dennask huffed sharply, jolting his head up and casting a warning look at the boy. It was not unfriendly, but the sudden motion was enough to startle Dennai to stillness.

Once he'd realized what he'd done, though, he apologized. "Right, sorry, sorry." And he scooted on the floor a safer distance around the Bronze and closer to Avaia, so that he now sit fairly in between the two parties.

Dennai have to look and smell good, said Dennask as he returned to snuffling along on his food. Good smell and good look show off Dennai perfection.

"Wow! Okay!" Dennai almost had to laugh at the ridiculousness of that. Whether he'd ever thought of himself as anything near perfect or not - he had not - to hear his wher speak of him so haughtily was...incredibly strange. Kind of uncomfortable. "Let's not go crazy here."

Dennask paid the comment no mind and silence lingered for a moment before Dennai turned back to Avaia. He'd had the feeling, for some reason, that Dennask had not been broadcasting his thoughts for her and Avask to hear. "He's trying to keep me smelling good throughout the day or something. Something about presentation, I guess." Giving a friendly eyeroll towards the little Bronze, Dennai smiled. "So how are you guys doing?"

While Dennai spoke, the Bronze's chewing lulled. Dennai talk to Brownhandler girl again. Dennai like Brownhandler girl?

Yeah, she seems cool, thought Dennai in answer. You can talk to her too. Don't be afraid.

Dennask not afraid. Dennask not sure who worth talking to. This struck Dennai. He nearly answered aloud. This seemed like behavior that needed some correcting - some setting straight. But before he could say anything, Dennask continued, If Dennai talk to her and like her, then she worth liking and talking to. Dennask talk to Brownhandler girl too.

...Did you say that last part for her to hear...?

Avaia had always been a very sweet, albeit naive and incredibly oblivious girl. So when Dennai remarked on Avask's comment and she responded immediately with, "Of course you are! You're amazing!" she didn't really think much of it. She didn't notice the light pink touching his cheeks or realize that what she said could be misconstrued in some way. She was just being honest and giving him a compliment. Evidently his bronze seemed to share a similar opinion, if she could correctly glean his side of the conversation.

She stifled a giggle. Back in Rubikon, anyone who had spoken to themselves like that would've been called crazy. Here, in the Weyr, it was somehow perfectly normal. It had taken her a while to get used to it, but since she now did the same, it was an easier adjustment. She was still practicing thinking her responses back to Avask instead of saying them aloud, though. Just to avoid the whole "talking to yourself" thing.

Talking to Avask is wrong?

"Of course not. I'm happy to sound crazy for you," she replied cheerfully. This reassured the brown and he snorted before stuffing his head back into his bucket, his pudgy body wiggling with glee. Shifting her gaze to Dennai again, she smiled. "I'm glad to hear it! Yeah, it's been... an adjustment. Taking care of both these boys is proving a challenge." She rubbed Apa's side, eliciting a sleepy croon.

She grinned knowingly as Dennai addressed his wher again. Unable to hear the little bronze's side of the conversation, she opted to tune out, feeling it was a private discussion. At least until the man turned back to her and offered an explanation. She nodded sagely. "Presentation is everything, you know," she teased. "We're doing great. I'm already feeling tired from it all, but it's wonderful."

Looking to Dennask as he suddenly included her in his comment, she beamed. "Thank you, Dennask! I'm honored. I like you too!" She glanced at Dennai and practically glowed at him. "And you, of course! I like you as well!"

Ava is best. Dennask should talk to Ava, Avask agreed. Pausing and considering his own words as he looked at his brother, he added, Avask too. Dennask should talk to Avask too.

((Oh my gosh, I'm so sorry this took me ages to reply to! ;w; I'll do better next time, I swear!))

If there was one thing Dennai hadn't expected, it was to be told that he was amazing. Who on Pern thought that he was amazing? Well, clearly Avaia. But he'd never viewed himself as anything special before. He felt color begin to fill his cheeks, and then bit on them to stifle it. Surely he could manage to keep his composure for a mere couple of minutes?

Dennask know Dennai perfect, said the Bronze. And it was with horror that Dennai realized, now having no more reservations about speaking aloud to Avaia and Avask, they would be privy to everything Dennask said. And, therefore, indirectly, to nearly everything Dennai thought. Dennask choose Dennai. Dennask only choose best.

Dennai, however, answered only Avaia's claim, acting as if he had not heard his wher's assertions. Giving a flattered laugh and scratching at the back of his neck - the composure he so desperately wanted to keep seemingly lost, at least partially - he replied, "You're...pretty amazing too!"

Brownhandler girl amazing? Dennask lifted his head from his food, giving Avaia an appraising look, sniffing all the while.

I think so. Subtly entreating the Bronze to return to the world of thought, where only he and the wher could communicate, Dennai answered only via mental link.

Alas, his plan did not work. Dennai probably right. He knew Dennask was far too intelligent to be doing so out of ignorance. The wher was doing this on purpose! Dennai gave a surprised and affronted look at what he deemed betrayal as the small Bronze made his way away from his breakfast and towards the Brownhandler. Dennask check. And giving a final lick of his chops, he began smelling the girl in question with loud, wet snuffles.

Dennai was about to call the wher off, but to do so would have interrupted the conversation Avaia and Avask seemed to be having, half-mental link and half-verbally. He smiled at this. Replying verbally to stuff that wasn't voiced aloud likely did make one look crazy. But to those in the know...well, it was just nice to see. This particular interaction was quite cute.

One moment later, his cheeks were aching again. "I-I like you too!"

Dennask was not impressed with this 'revelation'. Dennask already say that. In fact, the Bronze sounded bored. Why you have to repeat?

"Because," answered Dennai simply. But this wasn't enough of a reply, and he continued. "It's nice to actually, like, say it. Yourself. Means more coming from that person's mouth."

Dennask not credible?

Dennai's eyes widened. "Where did you even learn that word?"

This did not seem to please the wher, though. His eyes narrowed and he growled. Dennai dodge question!

But the Bronze was soon distracted by the Brown's call. Dennai urged Dennask not to scoff. Tried to instill that doing so would be impolite. Dennask just managed to resist doing so, but didn't understand why. It was silly to imply that Avaia was the best when- Dennai best, even if he question-dodger.

From behind the Bronze, Dennai slammed his own palm into his face. Forward one step and back two.

But Dennai like Brownhandler girl and Avask so they close. Dennask will talk to Avask.

"I am really sorry about him," murmured Dennai through nearly-clenched teeth as if this would prevent Dennask from hearing.

If this little encounter was any indication, Dennask was going to be a quite the handful. Avaia stifled a giggle behind her hand, doing her best not to offend the little bronze in any way. At least now she could hear what he said--and boy did he have a lot to say.

She smiled at Dennai's response. "Thank you!" As usual, the possible connotations went right over her head and she was left beaming at him with far too much enthusiasm, not even registering that he was uncomfortable in any way. She saw the smile and she assumed everything was good. At least up until Dennask approached her, intending to see if she was amazing. She carefully sat still, allowing herself to be subjected to the inspection. Apa was less pleased about it and offered a squawk of protest that his mistress quickly silenced.

"Sorry about him. He's a fussy thing," she said, one hand holding his mouth shut while the other scrubbed at his eye ridges. He calmed quickly enough and she released him once more. The exchange between the bronze and his handler had her fighting giggles again and she glanced at Avask as he just stared at them.

And then Dennask was addressing him and though Dennask didn't scoff, it was clear the bronze was quite scornful of Avask's comment. The brown blinked, head cocking, as he considered the other wher's words. He knew for a fact that Avaia was the best, but he didn't want to make Dennask feel bad. So he settled for a compromise.

SmellGood best bronzehandler. Ava best brownhandler, he said decisively. And then, privately to his handler, Ava best handler ever.

Avaia lovingly stroked his ugly head and he made a happy burbling sound before stuffing his head back into his bucket. Turning her gaze back to Dennai, she shook her head. "No, he's fine. A wher will always favor his handler, after all!"

Dennask's inspection went on for quite a while. But eventually, the Bronze pulled back with a satisfied huff. The results were, well, expected. Brownhandler girl smell like Brownhandler girl.

"Yep, that's to be expected." Dennai seemed less than excited about the wher's line of thought and focus. He really wished they could change the subject.

Dennask tilted his head, eyes still on Avaia. Smell amazing?

"Sure," said Dennai, pushing him toward the direction so that, perhaps, they could be over and done with the interrogation.

But not smell like Dennai. At this, the Bronze turned back to his handler. It was clear that he was talking more to himself than anyone else. Boy did Dennai wish that really were the case. Then he would be the only one to be hearing this stuff. He could handle that.

Dennai couldn't imagine that Avask was taking this entirely well, even though he had gone back on his words and said that both Dennai and Avaia were both the best in their own ways. As Avaia said, a wher will always favor their handler, and having it be implied that their handler was less than perfect was likely at least annoying if not offensive. "Yeah, well, that's because different people smell differently."

This gave Dennask pause. Dennai smell amazing and Brownhandler girl smell amazing?

"Sure!" Maybe. Maybe they were finally reaching the end of this line of discussion.

But the Bronze only looked more confused. Two smell for one thing?!

Alright, that was it. It was time to bring out the big guns. "Hey! You still have food over here!" called Dennai. "Don't you want to eat this? Mmmm, if you don't, I'm gonna."

But, alas, this 'master plan' did not work. Dennai eat, said the Bronze, as if waving his handler away. Dennask thinking.

"...Okay, no, I don't really want to eat this."

Avaia hadn't realized whers were capable of deep thought like Dennask seemed to be engaged in. Avask was more than happy to accept things as they were without question. It interesting to see, especially in a wher so young. Maybe it was just the baby curiosity thing, and he would grow out of it. Either way, she allowed him to examine her and then turn philosophical on his handler while the brown and his handler watched.

Dennai's attempts to explain why they smelled different made Avaia smile and she finally jumped to his rescue when he failed at tempting his bronze back to his food. "Think of it this way, Dennask. Avask and I smell different. And Apa here smells different from both of us," she pointed out, thrusting the squirming lizard out for the wher to investigate if he wanted. "But all our different scents aren't necessarily bad. They can all be good--just in different ways. Like how you and Avask agreed that Dennai and I are both the best, just in different ways. There are all sorts of things in the world that can be equally good in their own ways," she stated.

Avask get. Make sense, the brown chimed, licking gore from his snout. He had managed to finish his meal and flopped down next to Avaia, nosing his head onto her lap. She set Apa on his back and scratched the wher's eye ridges, drawing forth a groan of appreciation.

"Or like this. Food is good, but so are scratches. Don't you think?" She shifted her gaze from Dennask to Dennai with a wink. Hopefully the bronze would at least let the subject drop and return to his food, even if he didn't understand. Either way, the bronzehandler was in for a long few months as the wher expressed his curiosity.

((I DID IT. I MANAGED A POST. -sob- I'm sorry it took forever!))

Dennask listened attentively to Avaia's explanation, bronze head tilted in a thoughtful position. Then, the wher hummed, as if tasting the words he had been given and seeing what he thought of them. His head turned about, looking to Avaia and then Dennai, and then back again. Finally, he spoke.

Dennask like Brownhandler girl explanation better. And he held his nose high in the air, trotting, looking almost as if he had been offended, back to his food. Dennai no even try.

Dennai grimaced, eyes following his wher. "I just wanna be able to go eat my own breakfast..." As Dennask returned to eating, the wherling looked up to Avaia and flashed her a pitiful look. A smile soon took up his lips, though. He was genuinely grateful for the fellow handler's help. "Thank you," he said, patting an affectionate hand on his Bronze's wrinkly hide.

But Dennask snorted and looked up from his meal coldly. Dennai make no effort, he said. Clearly the wher was not currently in the mood to be touched. Dennai have to do better.

The cold look actually caused the boy's heart to sink a few notches. "I will, I promise," he said. His somewhat aggrieved tone rang with truth. "After I eat, my head will be completely in the game."

This seemed to trigger sympathy from the Bronze. His look softened, and his eyes whirled a bright green. More yellow shone than blue. Dennask can understand that. Dennask have difficulty thinking when no have food either. Tummy rumbles too loud - fill ears.

Feeling that Dennask would now be receptive to affection, Dennai returned his hand to the wher's back, holding it there gently. "You continue filling yours then, alright?" he said. "We'll work on mine later."
