Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was time to stop being moody. Time to put on his big boy pants and face the rest of the candidates, practically none of whom he now knew, and build the sort of relationships he should have already constructed. After all, there was a very large double clutch on the sands and there was a slightly higher chance this time that he would impress, as well as most of these... people. That meant he needed to be social and actually at least attempt to learn their names.

As Casimir stood in the doorway of the barracks, cradling a misshapen lump of something swaddled in cloth, he debated the intelligence of his plans. If they got caught, they could all be sent packing. Or maybe the masters would refuse to let them stand. ... Could they do that? Could they force their candidates to stand and watch while the hatchlings chose everyone else? Well, if he got the entire barracks involved, there was no possible way they could kick them all out. Yes, that was a good idea. He just had to make everyone drink.

Whipping the cloth from his hidden item in a flourish, Cas skimmed his gaze over the candidates currently relaxing in the commons and drew a breath. He needed to be social. And as Danya had pointed out to him before the... incident, it was no fun to drink alone. So as his last final hurrah before he quit drinking, he was going to get completely smashed with as many people as possible.

Surely it was a good plan.

Puffing out his chest and trying to appear as confident as he had once felt, Cas strolled toward the commons with Mere bobbing disapprovingly on his shoulder. She had taken up permanent residence there to ensure her human didn't get into trouble. Unfortunately, she didn't realize that interacting with others in this way could be deemed trouble.

"Hey. So. Um. I have wine. Enough for everyone. Well, actually, probably not. But it's still a lot. Everyone can have some. As long as... nobody tells the masters." He paused, standing awkwardly in the very center of the room with a number of eyes locked on him. He held up the overfull jug and wiggled it invitingly, which Mere punctuated with a chirrup. "Any takers?"

It had been a long day. A very long day. Chores had been...filthy. It seemed like every single patient in the infirmary had needed sheets changed due to incontinence. Needless to say, Tarovir had taken a very long, harsh bath immediately afterward before he headed to the day's lesson and exercises. Though he'd prefer his chore rotation in the infirmary than the firestone pits, some days made him question the wisdom of that. It wasn't the smell. He dealt with odd smells all the time. It was the ick-factor. Not normally squeamish, Taro'd had a bad day doing infirmary laundry and all he wanted go do this evening was forget about it.

Rum was more than happy to be oiled in the common room. That way he could keep an eye on everyone and make sure no one caused too much trouble. That and oiling felt so good! Taro knew exactly where to rub and scratch to make the brown hatchling hum with delight. It was about the time where Taro considered calling it an early night except then Rum perked up wen the door opened and the dark-skinned candidate looked up too.

Casimir wasn't looking so good. But he had wine. For everyone. Judging by the number of skins and the number of people, they'd need a lot more wine. Taro could help with that.

"Hold that thought," he said brusquely and stood, letting Rum climb up to his shoulder and perching beside his still-damp dreads. He'd bathed after the evening meal too. Maybe a drink was what he needed to feel clean again. And drinks with people? Absolutely. Without another word, he headed for his room and a small trunk he kept under his bed. It tucked well behind the bed supports, so it was well hidden from any unannounced room inspections. His secret stash. Returning to the main room, he carried several jars of clear and pale brown liquids and a skin of something much stronger.

"We'll need a little more than that for everyone," he offered with a grin and set his load on a low table. "If we run through this, we'll be hurting in the morning." Looking around, Taro cracked open a jar and took a sip. "So. What game we playing? Matching shots? Never have I ever? Strip-drunk dragonpoker?"

Lessons with Chetia - as frustrating as learning to be literate could be - were quickly becoming something Ontally spent all day looking forward to. She was an intelligent woman, but more importantly she was patient. It couldn't be easy to teach someone as clueless as himself, but she handled it splendidly and never seemed too put off when things took longer than they should to stick.

In just a few weeks, Olly could now properly write his name and was now reading competently on a basic level. It would be quite a while before he wouldn't look like a fool in front of your average harper, but he felt pretty good about his progress.

He was deep into picking through some records Chetia had copied down for him to read when one of the other candidates - Casimir - came striding into the barracks with wine and a - frankly pretty enticing - offer. He shared a glance with his teacher, big blue eyes asking a silent question. Maybe a little break, just a little one, would be okay. He'd been working hard and the idea of bonding with the rest of what might one day be his wingmates was highly appealing.

She didn't immediately object so Olly stood, unsettling the fire lizards perched on his shoulders. "I'm game if you'll have me," he said. He wasn't overly fond of wine, it was the company he craved. Loraal and Chetia were good friends, but the more the better in his opinion.

"Why don't you sit with us for a while, friend?"

When Tarovir returned with something a bit more substantial Olly perked up considerably and a big goofy grin spread across his handsome features. "That's more like it! What do you say, Chetia? Want a drink before we go back to fancy scribbles?"

Looking up from the straggling lines Ontally penned, Chetia wordlessly quirked an eyebrow in answer to his pleading stare. Chin cupped in hand as she slouched forward, she looked anything but enthralled by his drills; still, her eyes traveled the breadth of the room to settle on not one, but two miscreants offering up a boozy bounty and throwing in a free game of poor decision making to any and all takers.

Ah, youth. Her eyes narrowed for a breath, looking over one shoulder before Ontally made the decision for her. Pulling a face, she first hesitated – then groaned compliance with exaggerated reticence. Fed into an over-the-head stretch, she answered with an indulging smile.

“I suppose you've earned it.” She had her suspicions, those she kept close to her chest as two players doubled to four. Purposefully overlooking the wisdom of private caches of spirits in the barracks in light of the spirit of camaraderie.

“We are not playing strip-anything!” It had to be said, Chetia's cheeks pinking in scandalized awe. She didn't want to see any more of these strapping young men than strictly necessary, no thank-you.

Why did it seem as if every candidate in these barracks had a firelizard? Vukasin hated spending too much time in the common rooms due to the fact that the little things were everywhere. Being oiled here, petted over there, napping on the shoulders or laps. Ugh, he didn't see the whole point in the annoying things. Even if they could be useful; sometimes. Which is why he avoided the room as much as possible unless Ritali managed to drag him out there.

Usually he managed to time his comings and goings well enough but tonight seemed to be a different story. As soon as he came out of the baths, clean and refreshed, there was one of the newer candidates holding up some wine. Casimir, if he remembered correctly. He'd seen the other boy drinking in the dining hall a few times.

Then another of the candidates was leaving and returning with more alcohol. And, scorch them all, he really wanted to have some of those drinks. Which meant spending time around those sharding lizards. Cursing to himself, Vukasin strolled further into the common room and headed for the harder stuff that Tarovir had brought in. "I'm certainly all for this idea." Shifting his gaze over to Chetia, the young man grinned. "No stripping? Takin' all the fun outta drinking games, woman."

Speaking of women, they would certainly need more girls around if they intended to play those sorts of games. Playing with so many guys wasn't as fun. Picking up one of the jars with a clear liquid, Vukasin opened it up and took a curious sniff before taking a small sip. He blinked, looked at the jar in surprise before turning his head to look at Tarovir. "You, sir, will be my new best friend." There was just one problem with that declaration.

There was a brown fire lizard sitting on his shoulder.

Well...he supposed if he kept drinking he would eventually get over the fact that he hated the creatures. Pests. Snorting to himself as he took his jar, yes it was his now, and headed to an empty seat and flopped down. "Guess we should find a better game that doesn't involve taking off clothes. For the lady." A teasing wink was shot in Chetia's direction.

The two candidates have become close since Elias first came to Vaioa. If it was by chance they held many common interest, both believing seeking time to learn a craft a complete waste of time. They considered learning a trade something that would hold them off from impressing on a dragonet. No their time and dedication would all be focused on their candidacy or so was the original plan. It was only recently did Elias notice Aramis's slight irritation when he couldn't speak to a certain redhead. This amuse the younger candidate to no end.

"Man you got it bad." Elias teased as he nudged the smaller candidate with his shoulder. "Dare I say it."

"I'll ring your neck if you do," Aramis groaned as he ran his fingers through his unruly brown locks. Elias was a thorn in his tailfork.

"Come just tell her already." Elias said with an all to pleasing smile curled on his lips. "If you wait too long some other guy can swipe her off her feet."

Aramis groaned once more as he tried his best to ignore the younger taller candidate by choosing to watch their two flitts darting around them. Both Outlaw and Gambit chirped loudly at one another as the two flew around their humans. The blue flitt Outlaw ceased his chase as nostrils flared. Whirling hues burned brighter as he caught the scent of others.

Elias felt the mischief dancing in the back of his mind as Outlaw began to form a small plan. Nothing big or disastrous but all the same up to no good. Even before the boy could open his lips and object to any plans the firelizard was conspiring, he was gone. Having darted as quick as his small wings could take him towards the small gathering of candidates and their bottles. Unsure what they were other then the fact they reflected the lights and shined brightly to his multi facet hues he wrapped his lean body around one. He squawked at the candidates around him as small talon tried to hold the bottle in his grasp. Clearly claiming the object as his.

"Dimglow." Elias muttered as he jogged up to the small gathering. A sheepish smile on his lips as he scratched the back of his head. "Sorry about him."

Aramis following his friend glanced around the common room with a smirk on his lips. "So there's a party going on." Booze the young man defiantly needed some liquid courage inside him if he wished to go through with what he needed to say to someone.

Well now. There seemed to be a surprising number of takers on Casimir's campaign for destruction, as first Taro, then Ontally, and finally Chetia all agreed to his little plan. By the time Taro returned with something far more substantial than the wine Cas had been able to smuggle out, Vukasin, Elias, and Aramis had all joined as well. Setting the jug down on the table and shrugging, he said simply, "Wine was the only thing I could sneak out of the dining hall." He nodded his thanks to Taro and then stepped back to gaze blankly at the others. Now what? A game? Sure, they could play a game. But what--

"How about Truth or Dare?" a voice suggested behind him. He whirled around, dislodging Mere with a squawk of panic, to see the girl behind him. Kellyn was quick, however, reaching out and grabbing Mere before she could hit the ground. "Sorry, didn't mean to surprise you! I'm game, too. Maybe help even out the genders a little." She flashed Chetia a smile and dropped into an empty seat, shoving wet hair from her eyes. She, like Vukasin, had just left the baths and encountered the enticing offer. For once, Hazel was not with her, instead curled up in her room fast asleep where he couldn't disturb anyone.

"Um. Right," Cas said slowly as Mere flitted back to his shoulder, eyeing the new girl. Very new, if he thought about it. He didn't think he'd ever seen her around. There was something vaguely familiar about her, though, that he couldn't quite put his finger on. Oh well. No use dwelling on it. "So. Games?"

"Yeah. I wouldn't be opposed to the strip poker, though it's better to go with something safer. Like Truth or Dare. So who wants to go first?" Kellyn leaned back in her chair, draping a leg idly over the arm, and looked around curiously at the others. She hadn't met any of them officially, but what better way to make new friends than to have a few drinks with them?

What had been a small gathering had quickly turned into a proper party with the prospect of booze. Olly stroked Nipper thoughtfully, wondering which of these other candidates would be his wingmates someday. He hoped Chetia would at least, and Tarovir was a decent enough sort. In fact, he didn't have a bad thing to say about any of the candidates he'd met; it just wasn't in his nature to dislike people. So he felt completely relaxed as he reached for the booze set on the table.

"Truth or dare? It sounds pretty self explanatory but I've never played it." No time for silly games on the docks; his peers would have laughed at him anyways. Loraal might have gone along with it, but just to humor him. "Is there anything I need to know?" Hopefully there would be no stripping involved, he thought. He didn't like the idea of Chetia being forced into an uncomfortable situation like that and every bit of him that was still a holder found the idea abhorrent.

Nipper hissed quietly, rattling his wings in agitation. Why did there have to be so many bloody people here? He'd liked it better when it was just Chetia. At least she had treats for him. These people had nothing to offer the bronze and so he growled resentfully until Bossy bopped him with a wing to shut him up. He settled down to sulk instead.

Olly continued stroking his bronze to reassure him and then asked, "How do we factor in the drinks? Do we take a drink when it's our turn?"

The promise of social lubrication lured a good many familiar faces from their hidey-holes – Chetia's wrinkles grew wrinkles as the woman's face scrunched with each new addition to the roster. Vukasin she favored with an ill look, eyes narrowing at his teasing jibe. The woman huddled deeper into her seat and watched, frowning, as a discussion was struck up as to what game they ought to play.

“We could play trivia.” There was an idea, she brightened with her recommendation only to descend back into sulky observation as more eager voices overrode hers. ...well she thought it would be fun, and more importantly educational. There were certain individuals present who she thought would fare better with some extra-curricular studying.

Her eyes seemed to have glued themselves to Vukasin's broad back, for some unfathomable reason. His exclamation over the colorless liquid he'd just imbibed from that suspicious looking jar had her pulling a face. Gross, was that even healthy? Did he even know what that was – he probably didn't. That wasn't sanitary at all.

“Oy.” Mumbling out of the corner of her mouth, Chetia glanced his way. “Maybe we shouldn't do this,” followed apace, before an unusual voice chimed in – notable namely for its owner, who was female and now draped inelegantly across a chair.

And she was smiling at her. Unable to help herself, a touch of red tinged the woman's cheeks. Her face burned even hotter once Vukasin winked her way. The way he called her 'lady' rankled. So she was modest and didn't appreciate an evening full of hairy chests!

Piqued, Chetia sat ramrod straight in her chair, voice sharp.

“I'll go first.” Cutting right over Ontally's last question, the candidate let her ire sweep common sense under the rug. She could be hip, she would be with it. And she'd do it sober, before things spiraled out of control.

Now the party was getting started! Taro grinned at Ontally and nodded. As if they'd turn anyone away. Tarovir didn't even mind the tight-laced Chetia joining in. They'd have to figure out rules though. Rules that would get her drinking as well.

"Spoil my fun, why don't ya," he fake pouted at Chetia but was grinning a moment later. Rum didn't like all the people being there and wrapped his still-short tail as far as he could around Taro's neck. Taro rubbed his back. "Why don't you go to bed? We'll be here a while," he suggested to the brown, picturing their room, specifically the shelf Rum liked to use as his bed. He'd even stolen a shirt to soften it. The brown flit churred and decided that he didn't want to hang around, even if it meant he couldn't watch taro. A moment later, the brown disappeared and Taro had someone admiring his spirits.

"Plenty more where that came from, my friend," he saluted Vukasin as things looked to finally get started. Truth or dare was the game of the night, and Tarovir was all for that. Though they only had two girls to several guys, it should still be an interesting night. Taro didn't discriminate genders, so any kissing dares were fair game. And as the night went on, he was certain there'd be kissing dares. He would have to keep the new girl in mind, though, for strip poker. She could be fun.

Chetia on the other hand...

Taro took his own seat, pouring some of his spirit into a cup. A small pour since this stuff was strong. "Hold on, hold on. Olly's right. We need to figure out drinking rules first." Taro took his own shot and poured another. He set that one down for later. "How about either finish your drink or take a shot whenever someone refuses to answer or do the dare? Could make it interesting and the person daring to take a shot if their target accepts."
