Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The day had turned dark as the storm swept in, anvil headed clouds accumulating with a speed and fierceness foreshadowing the strength of its eventual break. For many in the weyr this would be seen as a break, there'd be no drills with lightning forking across the sky. Riders could relax, sleep, work on leathers, drink, whatever their choice of occupation may be. Dragons may have been more disappointed, forced to their ledges until the weather shifted, but their rider's relaxation helped dim any discontent. Even candidates had an easier day of it.

Well, most candidates had an easier day. One candidate on assignment in the lower caverns was not so grateful for the meteorological phenomena.

This was the first big storm since Viviette's arrival, and she was terrified. Even the thunder was different here! Or perhaps it was her imagination, being away from home made everything more intimidating. She'd thought the queen egg touching was humbling, she'd rather go through five more like it then deal with this. How silly was she, thinking she could be a candidate, when at her age she could barely handle a little thunder! This realization didn't help her cope any better. Why storms bothered her was hard to say. Perhaps she subconsciously associated it with the constant flooding suffered by her old hold, or the trees occasionally brought down by the lightning. Such rational explanations didn't matter when your heart was pattering at a thousand beats a minute.

Now she was in the weyr's internals, pretending to be sweeping and dusting a large storage closet, when in reality it was the first secluded area she'd found that she could stay for the duration. Her braid was frazzled from constant stroking, and her nerves shot from the particularly large booms that penetrated even that far into the weyr. In her distress she'd tuned out everything else around her, a tunnelsnake could probably have popped out of the wall and crawled onto her shoulder before she noticed it. All that mattered right now was getting through the worst of it without anyone noticing. She couldn't be sent home for this, even if she secretly knew she wasn't fit to stay.

Overhead, the sky was a boiling cauldron of colors: grey, white, and dark blue ran together, each one fighting for dominance like the tongues of men in a really poorly-thought out fiction. Zoriah pulled a face every time lightning lanced across the sky and thunder tore it in two. This was definitely not a day to work outside. Once the runnerbeasts were settled into their stalls, that was it: no exercising, no running, no actual work because of the risk they might slide in the mud or get spooked by the lightning and thunder. Zoriah knew all this logically, but that didn't keep her from being disappointed. Since when did emotions listen to logic anyway?

Worst of all, it meant that she'd been assigned chores inside. How did people even stand it for so long? Four walls enclosing them at all times, it was just so... Zoriah's somewhat limited vocabulary ran out and she settled for 'trapping', but that didn't fully describe the feeling of boredom and limitation she felt. At least outside there was always something new to discover. Inside it was more like 'wow. A wall. Oooo another one! And a third one! I wonder what I'll find ne---oh Faranth there is a fourth wall, amazi-credible'. She wrung her shirt between her hands and a trickle of water splattered down onto the floor.

Right. Mud-cleaning duty. Because apparently floors couldn't be dirty, no sir, all floors had to be clean. It wasn't like they were specifically designed to catch dirt, mud, and whatever else gravity could throw at them. Zoriah's steps slowed down as she tried to find her way around the warren of the Weyr.

Well, at least I'll be able to follow my soggy footsteps if I get lost, she considered to herself. I thiiiiink I go... right? Sure, why not. It's a fifty-fifty chance that I've got it...

Following the same logic of 'sure, why not', she opened a closet door. Thunder cracked at that exact moment, loud enough to practically shake the Weyr.

“Oh! Sorry. I didn't know anyone was in here,” Zoriah apologized automatically to the other girl. Her eyes went to the girl's sleeve, spotting the Candidate's knots. “Is there any mop in here? Or a bucket? Or...” her voice trailed off. “Are you alright?”

"If this is to end in fire, we will all burn together."
Synn loved thunderstorms. The roiling sky, which seemed to be at war with itself, flashed and roared and ultimately demonstrated how very terribly magnificent nature was. The wild spectacle made Synn’s heart beat faster and put a spring in her step most people would not understand. She couldn’t explain it, nor would she feel it necessary to do so. She was an enigma herself and never did she feel a need for another’s approval.

Would it be terribly vain of her to compare herself to the powerful storm? Probably, but that’s exactly what she was doing while stabling the last of the runners. Am I not also powerful, unreadable, and unpredictable? she smiled and even chuckled lightly.

Then, soaked and mud-smeared, she sighed after being instructed to go inside. Why couldn’t she stay outside? She wanted to dance in the rain and splash in the puddles like she used to do as a little girl, that is so long as no one was watching her. She remembered with fondness the care-free days in which she and her father spent hours playing in the rain back home at the estate. The nostalgia dashed her mood slightly, but she continued smirking despite herself.

That is, she smirked until she was inside.

Sure, she could still hear the booming thunder, but she could no longer feel it in her chest. Its raw power was muted and she frowned while walking down the plain hallways of Vaioa.

She had changed out of her muddied clothes and now needed to retrieve cleaning supplies. Of course it fell to the poor candidates to make sure Vaioa stayed spick and span. She cursed under her breath, dearly missing the days of nobility she had taken for granted as a young girl.

Then, she turned a corner and found a familiar face. It was Zoriah. Synn hadn’t really gotten to know the girl, but the two were both a part of the groundskeeping force and she had seen her in passing a time or two. Was she talking to a closet? Or to herself?

Synn scratched the back of her head, hair still moist, and approached Zoriah. "Hey,” she greeted lamely. “You looking for supplies too?”

Viviette jumped and cringed as the stone shook around her, tears leaping to her eyes at the sensation. Why. Perhaps she should have gone to Rohken, confessed her fear, at least then another person she knew would be around to, if she was lucky, comfort her that all was fine. It was only when the other candidate spoke that Viviette realized someone had entered the closet with her. That gave her another start, staring at the older girl in horror. She vaguely recognized the newcomer, and their knots were the same. A candidate could expose her just as easily as a higher rank though. “I'm just... yes... there should be.” She broke her stare by glancing hurriedly around the closet, searching for a broom, mop, anything to regain her solitude.

Unfortunately the other candidate was more perceptive then Viviette liked, and she looked anywhere except at the girl as she searched for a way to answer the inquiry. “There's no problem.” Unsteady vocal notes proved it a lie. Maybe this person wouldn't notice and would go away. Another faint rumble, another frightened lip wobble, and she turned to face the back wall of the closet as fast as possible. “I think there's a mop in the corner. Over there.” She pointed behind her and to the right. There, that might have solved things.

Of course something would foil Viviette's attempt, and a second girl turned up. How many candidates were hanging around this completely uninteresting section deep in the weyr?! The younger girl was starting to panic. Could she escape? Run somewhere else? Not the barracks, those were too close to outside, and the candidatemasters might ask why she wasn't doing the chores available. She wasn't good at faking expressions either. Generally, Viviette predicted misery with a chance of extreme embarrassment.

“Supplies, yes, there are here supplies. Supplies here.” She whirled around, suddenly intent on handing them all the cleaning supplies they could want and therefore making them leave. Alas, this was a poor choice of actions. A stack of buckets lay in her path, and she went tumbling in Zoriah's direction, landing on her knees and palms, her yell of alarm almost masked by the wooden tower coming undone and causing a ruckus.

“Hey, Synn! Bramble didn't give you too much trouble, did he? I don't know what that horse is thinking, but I'm pretty sure it's something along the lines of 'yay, rain! I want to splash is every puddle ever. Pain in the ass to get him back in the stall once he realizes it's raining.” While he was normally one of Zoriah's favorite runners, she was pleased that stabling him hadn't been her job tonight. Although it looked like Synn was a lot more successful at handling him than Zoriah was. Hmph. Well, she knows her better, Zoriah massaged her own ego.

It wasn't that she disliked Synn, not at all. She barely knew the other girl, aside from being a familiar face in the stables. Just. Ugh. Jealousy was a seeping poison, she knew. But maybe it was time to try to get to know the other girl more. And the one hiding in the closet. Was she hiding from something? Zoriah's face creased in concern and she looked over her shoulder back at Synn. “I was looking for supplies, but...” she waved a hand towards the hiding Candidate, not certain how to handle the situation.

But, she would do her best to fake it. If the other girl was hiding from someone, she wasn't going to rat her out. At least there was a mop. Zoriah attempted to edge by the hiding girl to get to the mop, but quickly found herself blocked by the sudden gust of gravity affecting the stranger.

“Woah!” Zoriah swooped to try and catch her, but gravity was a foul nemesis. “Are you alright?” she asked, reaching out to help her up.

“Why are you hiding anyway? Is there someone you're hiding from? You don't need to be afraid of me and Synn. I'm Zoriah.”

Synn stepped closer to peer into the closet and realized with relief someone was in there. Then Zoriah hand’t been talking to herself. But… why was the new girl cowering in a closet? Was she avoiding someone?

Synn considered this for a moment but then smiled; happy Zoriah seemed to be in a friendly mood. She couldn’t explain why, nor did she have any proof to back it, but it had occurred to Synn once or twice before that Zoriah didn’t like her very much. Luckily, Synn wasn’t fazed by this. She wasn’t the type of person who needed everyone to like her, so she hadn’t made any attempt to reach out to the other candidate. But now seemed a swell time to get to know her and maybe, just maybe, they could become friends. Synn had few enough of those.

“Oh, yeah he can be a real pain sometimes. I admit, I got a little muddy trying to stable him,” Synn grinned as thunder vibrated through the walls and floor. “But, I found if you offer him a carrot he will calm down a bit. Offer him an armful of carrots and he will follow you anywhere!” she chuckled. “But I can’t blame him for wanting to prance around in the rain. Heck, if they hadn’t saddled us with indoor chores I’d be out there right now myself.”

Then, as Zoriah gestured to Viviette, Synn’s eyes once again locked on her. The girl was acting suspiciously, and Synn was pretty sure she knew why. She grinned as thunder sounded again and the girl started, stumbling forward in a display of klutzy fear.

“Yeah, no need to fear us. We aren't here to haze you or anything. But that thunder, whew! Scary stuff, huh?”
