Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Olly fiddled anxiously with the object in his pocket as he paced across the common room. He stopped just short of the hallway into the girl's part of the barracks, then turned and paced back across the room. He repeated this a few more times, before Bossy, fed up with his radiating nervousness and indecision, nipped sharply at his ear.

He grimaced. I know. I'm being a wuss. But what if she...misreads this?

The neon green fire lizard flicked her wings and chirped something at the bronze who sat opposite her. Nipper crooned apologetically and then nipped at Ontally's other ear. Clearly, Olly thought with half a smile, he wasn't going to be allowed to wuss out of this. At least his hard-earned marks wouldn't go to waste.

Alright, alright you two. Chill out. I'm going.

So he sucked in a deep, calming breath, banished his anxiety, and marched into the girls barracks with his head held high. He'd only ever visited Xeres but Chetia's door was clearly marked with her name in bright white chalk. As Bossy gave a self satisfied cheep and Nipper settled back down, Ontally knocked firmly.

Calamity, unapologetic hellion and general misery maker, lounged sedately in her girl's lap as the candidate read aloud from the latest of the records she'd borrowed from the Weyr's library. Voice clear and strong, the long dead weyrwoman's words rose from the weathered hide and filled the room, with the expectation that nobody was listening.

Well, aside from her green. Every so often her eyes nervously flicked to the jade statuette, gauging with hundreds of little glances just how relaxed the fire-lizard actually was. She'd been so well behaved, without a single bite or scratch at meal time – no matter how many times she extended her thoughts towards Calamity, she came away with only a tolerant chuff or flick of tail to mark the fire-lizard's temper.

It was altogether strange, and not very satisfying in the least bit. She hadn't done anything to mark such a profound shift in her pet's mood, and while girl and 'lizard had made strides towards adjusting to one another's close company, there was always an underlying sharpness to the green.

Not now, and she continued to read through the dry list of stores a third time. Chetia was afraid to stop. And if she'd learned anything from her stint at the Harper Hall, it was how to talk unceasingly. Projecting confidence while she looked anything but.

Olly's knock shattered even that calm, and for one heart-pounding second the candidate braced herself for claws ripping new holes in her trousers. In fact, Calamity did hiss and mantle her wings. There was the tell-tale prickle, but sensing two fire-lizards outside her immediate domain (one much larger than she) spooked the green into hiding rather than inflicting her foul mood on her companion's leg.

“C-come in!” Chetia stammered, reactively shoving the hide beneath the pillow and sliding off her bed even as her face crinkled in suspicion. Was this some sort of search, had the Masters heard about the drinking game after all? They hadn't announced themselves...

“Who is it?”

"It's Olly!"

Ontally was quite back his normal bouncy self when he swung the door open and beamed down at his friend. It seemed like when she wasn't teaching him, she was always by herself, nose in some scroll or tending to her chores with her back to the world. Aside from the Touching and the game in the barracks, he didn't think he'd seen her interact with the other candidates or...anyone really. He wondered if she liked things that way or if she craved attention the same way that he did.

"Hey Teach!" Ontally tried not to be too obvious about peering about her room, this was an invasion of privacy but, sharddit, he was curious. He'd expected piles and piles of scrolls, mysterious....teacher-y things. Maybe writing supplies. He was disappointed to find that things were incredibly normal.

"You shouldn't hide in your room when it's so nice out," he teased, leaning against the wall in a casual manner that belied the butterflies in his stomach. His eyes sparkled with mirth; they both knew damn well that it was hot enough to fry eggs outside.

Ugh. Eggs.

"I, uh, I brought you something. A surprise. Hold out your hands and close your eyes."

It was just Ontally. Cue one gusty sigh of relief as her apt pupil swung open the door and sauntered inside, grinning down at her with eyes sparkling. She managed a distracted smile for her student and friend as she touched base with a ruffled Calamity, calling the green back with a stern thought. She hissed upon reentry, swooping over the heads of Ontally and his tiny fair before coming to roost on one of her girl's shoulders, claws digging in as she glared at the intruder-guests.

“Sorry.” The apology was automatic, ingrained habit that was was set aside for a lingering stare and coloring cheeks as Ontally's gaze wandered. “Did you need something?” Her eyes followed the direction of his stare, puzzled at what he found interesting about the same bits and bobs she was sure came with every barracks room.

Was he looking for something? She uncrossed long legs and rose to her feet, shushing Calamity as the green squawked protest at the sudden movement. His teasing provoked a harrumph out of the woman.

“I have enough problems without heatstroke.” Really, what was he doing on the womens' side, had he just strolled down the hall? “Nobody stopped you, did they?” He didn't appear to have invoked the wrath of any of the Candidatemasters, which both reassured and disturbed her. Was it anyone who could wander, then? There were male candidates she would rather not see within thirty dragonfeet of her room.

“Ho-uh?” About to launch into an interrogation on the accessibility of unassigned living quarters, Olly's next words stopped her dead in her tracks. A...surprise? Her countenance darkened.

“This isn't a prank, is it.” Flashbacks to a haughty stranger rooting beneath a chair put the candidate on high alert. Calamity rattled her wings, wound tight.

She was suspicious. Why was she suspicious? Ontally adopted his best kicked puppy face, lip thrust out in an over-dramatic pout and eyebrows pulled down morosely. He looked ridiculous; hopefully it would make her smile because, really, Chetia worked too damn much for someone her age. Candidacy was serious business, but it wasn't like they weren't allowed to have any fun.

"Me? Prank you?"

He pulled the gift, wrapped carefully in a handkerchief out of his pocket and placed it into her hand, closing her fingers around it and letting a sheepish smile flicker over his face. When he spoke again, he seemed embarrassed, twitching toward the door as if to flee before she could see her present and get the wrong idea.

"It's just...well you've been taking so much of your time to work on scribbles with me, and the other day I was able to read a sign in the lower caverns...without your help!"

Really it had just been a supply list, but ever since then something had clicked in his head. The chalk markings on candidate doors had started to make sense. He'd even been able to make some sense of the chore list in the commons without asking a more educated candidate for help. Somewhere along the line, Chetia's patient repetition had stuck. Ontally felt that now, more than ever, he was ready for the sands. Surely now that he'd taken active steps to better himself, a dragon would find him acceptable?

"I thought I oughta get something nice for you. You know, to thank you." He squirmed. Would she like it? Girls liked jewelry, right? Sure it was glass and not gems, but the glasscrafter that had sold it to him had assured him that any woman would be as pleased as a dragon in the sun to show it off.

Ontally's face crumpled on point, exaggerated to the point of comedic and luring a smile out of the woman even as she ducked to hide it. Shaking her head, she breathed a wry chuckle. Her concern faded as she humored her friend, apprehension melting back into the shadows.

“You're one of a kind, Oy.” With her suspicions out of the way, Chetia wore calculating curiosity as her eyes zeroed in on the kerchief now in his hand. Something pocket-sized, had he made something for her? Even as she was endeared to her pupil, concern clouded her gaze. Coming from a checkered history of gullibility and regret she was slow to extend a hand to accept it.

Olly closing the gap himself threw her off, Calamity taking off with squalling contempt for privacy invaded. Chetia blinked owlishly as his fingers neatly caged hers, folding the trinket into her palm. Her face was hot, all her warmth migrating north to make her cheeks glow as she carefully unfolded her hand, marveling at the feel of the thing before she even pulled its shroud aside. Once exposed, a quiet “oh” stretched into an impregnable silence, as Chetia stared.

He'd...bought this for her? The glass beads glowed dimly in the light of her room, not the sparkle of gemstones but a more understated beauty. Her vision blurred as her throat itched, a sniff breaking the silence at last as she looked up at her friend, smile wobbly. It stretched wider as he spoke of reading signs, proof that the lessons had paid off.

She sniffled again, louder, before admiring the pretty beads again. Then, gently folding them back up, she tucked them into her pocket. Satisfied of their safety, she jumped and latched onto Ontally with a cry and free-falling tears.

“Thank-you!” She sobbed, squeezing tightly.

Oh?

Olly fidgeted uncomfortably, drowning in the prolonged silence. Was "oh" a good sign? She certainly wasn't smiling anymore. Perhaps he should have gotten something more practical to the life of a dragonrider-to-be. New boots maybe, or some of those tinted goggles that protected one's eyes from the unforgiving Vaioan sun. As he was beginning to despair, Chetia produced a watery smile. Olly relaxed; his gift was an acceptable one then.

Then she burst into tears and he had no idea idea what to do.

"Um! Ah..." His arms closed around her out of reflex but he was stiff with surprise and confusion. People weren't supposed to cry when given gifts. "You're welcome? Are they okay? If you don't like the color I can take it back..."

When she continued to sniffle into his shirt, he panicked. "Jays, please don't cry. I-I'll go back! I'll get blue ones! Girls like blue, right? Or is it pink? I don't know, just please stop making that noise..." Nipper weaved uneasily back and forth on his shoulder and Bossy had begun to pick up on her person's unease. Her soft creel echoed in his ears.

It was with great hesitancy that he gave her back a comforting pat and then put her gently at arm's length to search her features. She didn't look sad; no, she'd said thank you, she'd smiled at him, she must be happy. "Or...you actually like it? I can't tell." He hadn't thought her the overly emotional type.
