Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Dewdrop's encouraging humming went, at surface level, unperceived as the wher candidate pondered. Though, if asked, Dennai would recall that the room held a more familiar feel to it from that moment on - a warmth to it that perhaps he did not feel before.

Dennai's brows furrowed, eyes squinted as he thought about the question Elisia posed and the explanations that she offered. "It's...not that exactly." His gaze still remained distant, and after a second passed, he shook his head, as if having thought through these things and, even upon further inspection, felt they did not apply.

The boy pursed his lips, letting out a breath from his nose. How would he word this? It was best, he supposed, in the end, to begin from the beginning. Finally, he returned his gaze to Elisia and the fire lizards. "I'm from Half-Circle Hold," he said. "So our lives over there really revolve around the ocean. I was taught to be a fisherman. And I've kind of been doing that all my life."

His eyes wandered again and he shrugged. "It's not that I really enjoyed doing it, but I didn't really think that there was anything else I could be doing. And, I mean, I couldn't really talk to anyone about it because pretty much everyone else felt the same way. You know? It was what you had to do so most people just convinced themselves they liked it after a while." Though looking away seemed to help with remembering - with placing himself emotionally, speaking directly to Elisia felt best. Even if she could not see him directly, if he could look to her when talking, he would. It also felt the least disrespectful.

"One day...I don't know." He shrugged, sounding confused and maybe, even still a little shocked at his own actions. "I guess I just wanted to see if I could find something more. I just ran away. And I didn't really stop...running, I guess." Dennai wished that he had been able to make more sense of his own actions in this case. He knew it had to be troublesome to have someone be so vague about what was running through their own head. "I don't really know what I was looking for. But then I found this place and-" He threw his hands out to the side in an exaggerated gesture of his own bafflement. "-I became a wher candidate."

It really had seemed like a process that had taken place much quicker than it actually did. As if he had run away for this very purpose, though he knew that he hadn't. "I like it here. But how do I know that I didn't just stumble into the next fisherman job, you know?" asked Dennai. "How do I know that I'm not just gonna convince myself that this is the thing for me? How do I know if it really is or if I'm just kind of...desperately reaching?"

As Dennai started to explain his situation, Elisia sat back and listened carefully. Dewdrop kept her updated on his expressions and body language in the meantime. The Mindhealer would nod and smile encouragingly when he'd make pauses and Epi had stopped his constant speculation of the boy and relaxed. Almost dozing on his owner's shoulder.

A young boy living in a Hold that expected him to follow the footsteps of others before him. A path thought to be the only one. It was a far more common situation than people would think. He wasn't the first, he wouldn't be the last to suffer the feeling of being stuck on road that everyone around you said you HAD to take. Had to train in a certain skill, had to get a certain rank, had to get a certain title, had to marry a certain person. As Dennai finally came to the end she kept quiet for a moment as she gathered her own thoughts.

"First off, you'd be surprised how many runaways Vaioa has claimed as new members of its family. Those that weren't happy with what life had given them, feeling trapped. So you're not alone in that." Elisia smiled that warm smile of hers and tilted her head as she continued. "You're still very young, Dennai. It will take some time to really find your place and stop feeling like you're constantly on the run, like you've finally found a place to call your own."

Dewdrop chirped sweetly in agreement and flared her beautiful wings. The sound and movement brought Epi back to wakefulness and he let out a grumpy yip. Elisia giggled at the two before letting her expression fall into a gentle half smile.

"Truth be told if you don't stop and give things a chance you'll never know for sure if it's what's right for you. You could have run away and ended up with a caravan, or one of the many crafthalls. Even been Searched to be a dragon candidate. But what I do know is that your original path, becoming a fisherman, wasn't right for you. If it had been you'd have been truly happy and have stayed. You wouldn't have even thought of leaving to find something more." Her expression was warm and understanding and her voice was like listening to a rhythmic tune. One of the many things she was complimented the most on was her voice. There had been a few that had commented that she'd have made a fantastic Singer, and she DID sing from time to time, but only for her firelizards. "Have no doubt that you were very brave to have struck out on your own as you had to broaden your horizons. And don't be afraid of having made another mistake. Mistakes are what a natural part of life and teach us our lessons. I can assure you that becoming a Wherhandler will certainly be more...exciting than fishing would have been."

For all her talk and skill in her craft she never knew how someone would take her words. Some listened and took it to heart while others might scoff and ignore. It was truly up to them.

"A whim and a hope brought you here and made you a candidate. I say see that whim through. Prove to yourself and those you left behind that you can be more than what had been expected of you. If by chance you decide that is isn't for you, you can always discuss it with the Master in charge of Wherhandlers. Strike out once again on a new path. But remember, as I said before, you'll never really know what could for you until you settle and try." Elisia chuckled and took a small breath while linking her fingers together and lifting them to rest her chin on them.

"Sorry. That might have been a bit long-winded. I'm basically saying believe in yourself a little. You're a very intelligent young man. And yes I can tell just from the short time you've been here. You seem rather shy and unsure of yourself but you're definitely a smart one. Well worded and a good heart." She lifted her head from her prop and tilted her head as Dewdrop trilled and nipped at her ear. "Mmm...Dewdrop is right. Have you eaten? I should have offered. Since you're on a Handler's schedule you'll have been eating breakfast or dinner bout now right?"

The words provided to him by Elisia gave him a comfort. Dennai hadn't really voiced these thoughts, voiced anything about his past before to any of his newer acquaintances made at Vaioa. So to simply just share his worries and his true feelings on everything he'd been through - just to do that felt refreshing and made the air feel cooler and newer. He only noticed now how sweltering it had been. Though the previous temperature might have been more accurate to the reality of things, all things considered. "It's not long-winded at all," said Dennai with a smile. "I get it."

He hadn't expected to hear compliments along with Elisia's advice. And to hear it so plainly told that he was good-hearted and a sure-thinker, said as if it were not compliment at all but mere fact, had his cheeks ache as new color sprang to them.

Dennai's smile slowly faded. His expression remained serious (though of course not unappreciative). But there was a peaceful atmosphere to him that had not been present before, that his worries had at least somewhat been put to rest. "Thank you, Mindhealer." He nodded.

"You know, it's weird," he said. "Even though I'm not sure this is where I'm meant to be or what I'm meant to be doing, I kind of don't feel like I can leave. I don't really know where I'm heading but for some reason, it kind of feels right to stay right here." His gaze ended up on the hands folded on his lap. Taking a thoughtful second to stare and wonder, he shrugged, eyes going back to Elisia.

At the offer suggested by both fire lizard and woman, Dennai semi-started, eyes lighting back up and his former more youthful presence returning. "Oh, uh." He addressed the issue as it had been made, by both parties, looking between the mindhealer and the Gold perched on her shoulder. "I, uh, yeah, it's breakfast. I haven't had anything, but really, you don't have to! I'm already troubling you by coming by late." His lips twitched into a little smile and he gave a chuckle at this. "Not that- I mean, I know you're fine with me having come in and stuff, but you shared your red fruit juice and everything already. Food - that's too much."

Dewdrop hummed happily at Dennai's response to Elisia's words. She was always pleased when someone took it well. It meant she didn't have to bite their noses off when they reacted badly. The gold flicked her tail and purred as she sent the image of the boy blushing to Elisia. Making her owner smile grow all the brighter.

"You're very welcome, Dennai. And I'm glad to hear that you feel like staying. I think you'll be a wonderful new addition to the Vaioan family." Elisia said with a chuckle. He was certainly a polite young man. As she offered something to eat she was once again amused as Epi went on full alert. At the mention of food he was suddenly all happy chirps and friendly trills. Rolling her faded eyes she shook her head at the flit then, with Dewdrop's help, focused back on Dennai. "Its really no trouble. But you're right. It IS a bit late for me. In that case, promise me you'll get something to eat soon. Wouldn't want you to go hungry."

Elisia made to stand from her seat and slowly make her way around her desk. Once she was around she stood before Dennai and waited with her hand held out. "If you ever want to talk again Dennai don't hesitate to visit. It was an absolute pleasure to meet you."

Dennai's smile returned to full brightness. The evening turned out so much more settling than he had anticipated. The talk with Elisia had left him with a confidence and self-assurance that he had not held before.

There was no doubt in Dennai's mind that his stance on things could falter overtime. Things had a habit of rising and falling, never ever constantly remaining stable. But if that were to happen, he now knew that he'd have an ally in the Weyr - someone who would surely be able to re-boost his spirits. A friend.

He made sure to meet Elisia halfway when she rose to offer her hand, and he took hers in the both of his. "I'll get to the dining hall as soon as I leave from here," he said.

And he gave the mindhealer's hand a heartfelt shake. "Completely, completely likewise," said Dennai. "Thank you. Thank you so much."

The wher candidate left that night with courage renewed.
