Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

How Dennai makes it to the Weyr proper and all the way to the mindhealer's office in the Lower Caverns is another one of those situations where...he just doesn't know. Like coming to Vaioa itself it was another one of those times where he seemed to act and then his mind and his logic only caught up with him later. Which was alarming, to say the least, considering the distance he'd gone this time. At least when deciding to come to Vaioa, all he'd had to do was make an unthinking turn... He'd already been on the move for a while by that point.

Of course him running away from Half-Circle Hold in the first place had been another one of those spur of the moment choices. Faranth. Thinking this over, the wher candidate did certainly have a thing or two to go over and discuss. This didn't seem exactly normal. Should he be worried?

Well, having made the conscious decision to show up to Elisia's door or not, he was here now. And he'd might as well go with the flow of things by this point. So, with a deep breath and a bit of rocking on his heels, the lanky boy reached out a slightly unsteady, slightly uncertain hand, and rapped against the surface.

Waiting for a response, Dennai tried to noodle out some reassurances for this action for himself. But every time he came up with something, it struck up an opposing, negative, worrying thought. Shaking his head, he quieted his musings. It made no sense to think himself in circles now. He could wait to do that after having a seat and properly introducing himself to the mindhealer.

Night had fallen which normally was the cue for Elisia and her two flits to hit the furs soon. Yet that evening the Mind Healer couldn't seem to drift into slumber. As always when sleep evaded her she was up and about with a tired Dewdrop on her shoulders chirping in protest. Elisia needed to SLEEP. She had been so busy the last couple seven days that she was forgetting to take care of herself again. Dewdrop didn't really know why her owner was so anxious that night though since most of her patients had been fairly easy, sessions calm and undisturbed. It wasn't until Elisia stopped fidgeting with some hides on her desk and seemed to relax that the Gold got a small hint of what the problem was. There had been a clever block on it that Elisia had learned to put up against the flits probing at times.

Nightmares again. That worried Dewdrop. They were becoming more frequent the busier Elisia became. Crooning softly she snuggled a little tighter around the woman's neck. It was all she could really do against the uneasiness that came with the nightmares, soothing thoughts and images with lots of physical affection. As an afterthought she reached out and shoved against her brother's consciousness to wake him. Epi hadn't been as troubled by Elisia's wakefulness and was soundly sleeping back on the bed. At least until his sister's mind rudely invaded his own till he was up again. Hissing in irritation he was up and gliding his way over to the desk. He was ready to start complaining when he finally was hit with the situation. Ashamed by his neglect of his owner's well-being he cooed sadly while moving to nudge his nose against a hand she had resting on the desk's surface.

"Shhhh, both you, I'm ok. They are just bad dreams." Elisia said softly while gently petting Epi to calm and reassure him. Dewdrop on the other hand wasn't going to let it drop. Doing her best to share feelings and images to portray how she felt Elisia was working too hard. She needed to rest. No more patients. Elisia gave a weary sigh in response and shook her head. "You know I can't just stop accepting patients Dew. This is my job, my duty to the Weyr."

Dewdrop growled deeply making her whole body vibrate against Elisia's neck while more images flashed between them.

"You're right...I've been slacking in my own care. If it'll make you happy I'll take a personal seven day. Ok? But if any emergencies come through you know I must take them." She waited patiently and was rewarded with a reluctant sense of agreement from the little gold. There was still a hint of unhappiness but it was quickly ebbing away. Epi seemed content too sensing both his sister and his owner were no longer arguing. He curled up under Elisia's hand to enjoy the attention, and hopefully get back to sleep.

No such luck.

Rapping at the door had the brown up and on high alert. Dewdrop was bristling at the interruption but already preparing herself to remain calm. They were used to late night visitors though usually word was sent ahead before the arrival. Elisia frowned at the sound and was on her feet heading toward the door in moments. Was one of her patients in trouble? It was the only explanation she could think of. Her gold sent a quick image of herself in her night robe making her quickly adjust to hold it closed around her. Wouldn't want to be flashing anyone would they? Reaching the door she could hear Epi's wings flapping as he circled above them. Ready to dive-bomb whoever was on the other side if they caused trouble. Elisia opened the door slowly to peek out at who was there. Not for herself of course, for Dewdrop who was leaning on her shoulder to see. The image of a nervous young man standing in the dark hallway filled Elisia's mind. With a look of deep concern she opened the door fully.

"Hello...are you alright? Are you lost?," She asked keeping her tone soothing and calm. Asking if the boy was lost was to the fact that when she saw his face in the image Dewdrop gave she didn't recognize him. Elisia was very good with faces, never forgot them, so he had to be new or not from Vaioa at all. Perhaps he had gotten her room mixed up with someone elses? Though she highly doubted that. Her room's location was well known to everyone at Vaioa, almost as familiarized to residents as the Infirmary and Dining Hall. The other reason for the question was of a more deeper meaning. 'Lost' could mean geographically misplaced...or emotionally so too. "Do come in, its oddly chilly in the Caverns tonight."

She stepped aside to let him in though Epi hissed his disapproval. The boy was a stranger! What if he was there to cause his owner harm? The brown grumbled while landing to perch just above the doorway on a dent in the wall there.

Having been working and studying as a Wher Candidate for a while now, Dennai had adjusted to the schedule handed to him, becoming almost nocturnal, and, overtime, losing awareness of the fact that the rest of the world didn't move as such.

It was only as he saw the mindhealer ready for bed, her fire lizards either curious of him or adverse to his presence, that he realized that most people weren't really awake and active at this hour.

His eyes widened and he prepared himself to apologize and walk away. "Oh, wow, I-" Well, somewhat prepared. "This is a really bad time." It was a statement - a realization. Not a question. He knew it was, and inwardly he scolded himself for not remembering the schedule to which everyone else kept. "I'm sorry."

When Elisia stepped aside and opened the door for him, though, Dennai's brows furrowed. "Are you sure?" he asked. "I can come back at another time. Um, my name is Dennai and I'm a Wher Candidate. So I'm kind of on this whole other schedule and totally forgot that...not everyone...is..." His words came slower towards the end of his speech. He just felt embarrassed and guilty by this point. And though the mindhealer seemed quite kind, his guilt was only furthered by the fact that his presence caused her companions distress.

His eyes went to the brown fire lizard who rested in the dent in the wall and then back to Elisia in the doorframe. Dennai's conviction and courage waned by the moment, and when he spoke next, his voice sounded weaker - quieter. "Are you sure it's okay?"

"Apologies are not needed. I wasn't really asleep anyway." Elisia said assuming that his backpedaling was due to him realizing how late it was. His statement about it being a bad time helped that assumption. When he didn't move into the room after she stood aside she tilted her head questioningly. Dewdrop gave her a quick update of the boy looking at her with what appeared to be embarrassment and guilt. Elisia was becoming quickly endeared by the hesitant nature of her late night guest. Hearing that he was a Wher Candidate made her raise a brow though. No wonder she hadn't recognized him. Though she tried to keep track of everyone that came to live at Vaioa the ones at the Hold were a little harder since they seemed to like keeping to themselves mostly. She chuckled softly with a shake of her head.

"Please, Dennai right? Don't worry. I understand perfectly. You've done nothing wrong." Elisia tried to assure him with her voice kept in its soothing tone. Not wanting to scare him off. From Dewdrop's image offered of Dennai he was obviously young. Possibly on the cups of being an adult. It was hard to really tell with him looking so fair in the face and lanky in stature. Epi was still eyeing the boy suspiciously while his golden sister had relaxed and accepted that Elisia wasn't going to just the newcomer leave without helping. Dewdrop crooned and cooed at Dennai to show she meant no harm. Her owner was pleased by Dew's welcoming of him, it emboldened her to reach out to him as his next words reached her ears sounding weak and quiet. "Yes. Its ok. Come in and sit. Let us talk of what has troubled you into coming to me."

Though one fire lizard remained cautious of him, the Gold seemed to welcome his presence. This was not something that Dennai had expected. His face shot up to the crooning creature. Some of his uneasiness seemed to literally melt away at the sound, his stance drooping from his shoulders at the comforting weight of reassurance. Though he still felt guilty for causing what he felt was a disruption, Dennai nodded at the woman's words and walked through the doorway.

"Thank you," he said, quietly, head bowed and eyes on the ground. And then he remembered that he should probably include her title in that, to be respectful. Clearing his throat, Dennai gathered the courage to raise his face and he repeated, voice slightly stronger this time, "Thank you, mindhealer."

Dewdrop showed Elisia how the boy relaxed and it made Elisia smile a little brighter. As he walked inside the brown flit who had been watching him took flight again to land on Elisia's other shoulder. He was still cautious and kept his eyes narrowed at Dennai. His golden sister flicked her tap to whip at his hindquarters to make him behave. Telling him the boy was harmless and Epi was just making him nervous.

"You're welcome." A hint of merriment could be seen on her face as the boy used her title to thank her again. She never stood on formalities much. "Please. Call me Elisia. No need to be so formal here. I'm here only to help. Now come, sit." Elisia moved to lead him toward the large couch in front of her desk. Cushy with pillows and soft furs. "Would you like something to drink. I believe I have some redfruit juice and water around here."

Without her even telling Dewdrop to, the gold was off gliding to the desk. Picking up a small wineskin she returned to Elisia and dropped it into her hands. "Ah! Here it is! Thank you, Dewdrop." A chirp of welcome and Elisia held out the wineskin. "Here you go. Redfruit juice. Sweeter than wine for sure." She'd have just tossed the skin to him but she didn't want to accidentally hit him with it. Her throwing skills weren't exactly the greatest and she didn't want to tired Dewdrop out too much helping her.

He did as he was told - entering and sitting down. And at Elisia insisting on Dennai calling her by her name, he smiled. "Dennai," he said in friendly introduction. That is, before he realized- "I think I just told you my name for like, the fourth time."

Dennai glowed a little less brightly at that. But, he decided to make a joke out of it. "Well, you know us wherhandlers and future wherhandlers," he said. "We're nothing if not efficient. Sometimes things gotta be done more than once to make sure you're doing them right." It was evidenced, though, by his somewhat flat and tapering laugh that he didn't find his quip all that amusing.

"Oh, uh, thanks, yeah." And he took the proffered juice. Though he seemed to feel a bit out of place accepting the drink, his eyes landed on the assisting gold fire lizard. His smile returned. "That's really cool, by the way. How your fire lizards help you? That's what they're doing, right? I noticed that last one, but, you guys seem to have a cool bond."

Dennai opened the water skin, ready to take a drink from it when he realized that this might be bad manners. Better to ask before acting. "Do you have glasses or should I just...straight from the skin?"

"Haha! Don't worry. You're just nervous. Just take deep breaths and stay calm." Elisia said with a warm smile. Dewdrop continuously kept her updated on the boy's whereabouts in the room. She was pleased to see he did indeed sit down. As the boy spoke she had moved to stand near one end of the bench with her head tilted to listen to him. A small frown turned down the corners of her lips hearing the flat sounding laugh. "Mmm...Efficient yes. Though as I said. I believe you're just nervous. And that's ok. Nothing to be ashamed of."

When he took the juice she moved to sit at her desk and leaned forward to continue listening to him once she did. Her eyes not really looking straight at him until Dewdrop helped her adjust. Epi was still of course keeping a close eye on the boy and wasn't about to stop till he was proven trustworthy. Hearing him mention how her flits were helping her she smiled fondly.

"Yes. They are helping me. I've had both of them since I was little. This one...," She lifted her hand so that Dewdrop lovingly nipped at her offered finger. "Is Dewdrop. And the handsome one here...," Now the other hand lifted to Epi on the other shoulder, he mimicked his sister's nipping of their owner's finger. "Is Epi. They are brother and sister. And they certainly act the part often."

Elisia let out a small laugh at Dennai's question and her smile widened. "Go ahead and just drink from the skin. I'm afraid most of my good cups have been taken to be washed by the drudges. So tell me...what seems to be troubling you, Dennai?"

While Epi still seemed to be wary of him, it looked, at least to Dennai, that the gold Dewdrop stared at him with warm and compassionate eyes. The wher candidate found that the fire lizard's encouragement managed to put him even more at ease. He wasn't sure why, exactly. But he relaxed, settling into a sort of crouch in the seat on which he sat. The pose still held some tension, but he was significantly more relaxed. Elisia's pleasant tone and kind words only helped the matter.

He gave a smile to the three, and then lowered his gaze to concentrate on working carefully with the wine skin. Taking a swig of red fruit juice, he let the nectar settle and then swallowed. A sign of success: Dennai's shoulders drooped as tension fled from that part of his body. And the boy let out a breath as he prepared to speak. "I don't really know how to start," he said. His voice was noticeably quieter than before. Though, this time, it was not out of shyness, but comfort.

Still, he shifted in his seat, eyes wandering off to the arm of the chair. Absently, he found himself rubbing at his own left arm. "I guess I just feel kind of lost."

Elisia never had to worry about Dewdrop disappointing her when it came to helping a patient relax. Even where Elisia's own presence would just put them on edge, the gold could reach them to put them at ease. The Mindhealer had found that many people responded better to animals and pets than other people. They felt no judgement or need for posturing around them. More than once she used the tactic of leaving Dewdrop alone in the room with the patient and let them talk to her openly. The flit would just play back what was said to help Elisia do her job.

So it was no surprise to be shown how the boy's tension seemed to melt away under Dewdrops encouragement and her own. Epi of course was still on the fence about him but that was just the brown's nature.

She listened to the swishing of liquid as he worked with the wine skin and waited. There was no need to rush him or nudge anymore. Dewdrop showed her how relaxed he was now and that was a good sign. When he finally spoke up again it was quiet but the shyness was gone. He was ready to speak. Elisia gave him an encouraging smile and tilted her head to show she was listening.

"That's something many feel in their life at some point. Even more so if they end up in a place far from where they come from." She continued to smile at him though there was a soft understanding to her expression now. "But it can be different for everyone. What is it that makes you feel lost? Is everyone treating you alright at the Hold? You said you were a wher candidate...are you having issues adjusting to your new schedule? I know plenty of handlers who had that trouble at first."

Her speech was smooth and easy, never accusing or judgmental. She wanted Dennai to feel as though he could open up to her and that she'd understand. How he was feeling was normal so far and Elisia wanted him to realize that. It was usually harder for youths to understand that their issues weren't something unique, that others do or have felt the same. But he seemed like a smart young man, a bit shy but indeed smart. He'd figure it out. All the while Dewdrop was making a soft humming sound to egg him into talking more. That motherly instinct of hers kicking in.
