Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Avaia watched Fenrask carefully, very aware of Fen analyzing her entire move... or lack thereof. She hoped the same impatience extended to the wher and that he also took her posture to mean she was unprepared and inexperienced. Though she wasn't quite sure how to handle a staff, she did have a fair amount of experience with other weapons--nothing with the reach of a staff, of course. She would need to improvise.

And improvise she did, once Fenrask launched himself at her. She shifted one leg back, ready to twirl away when he drew close enough. Without warning, he changed direction and she found herself doing a strange pirouette just to avoid his gaping jaws. She twirled, skipping aside as she did, and swung the staff after him reflexively. It was only then that she jerked it back and took another hurried step back, throwing a quick glance toward the handler.

"It won't hurt him, right? If it connects?" she asked, genuinely concerned. She shifted her gaze back to the wher, holding the staff closer to her now as she waited for either another attack or for Fen to respond.

Landing empty handed but with his opponent fumbling in her evasion, Fenrask immediately threw his weight on his leading leg and turned to chase, only to glimpse the swinging staff instead. The wher ducked, chest thumping against the dirt and head twisting to narrowly avoid the weapon's end, skittering feet beneath him for deft recovery and regained distance. Tricksy! She moved like she were clueless and yet swung as if she knew. He wasn't used to that. He also wasn't used to strikes getting pulled back either.

It would have clipped him if she hadn't. Fen was all too aware of that, too.

"No kid, it won't. Precisely the reason I ain't using an actual blade here. Little sting, strong hide he would say. Just bounces right off. So don't hold back like that again." She set her gaze on Fenrask steadily, "And you, bud, are playing easy."

A huff. There was nothing wrong with a bit of caution, Avaia was a completely new opponent here. Gearing up regardless of the criticism the brown shot forward once more. A clear straight bound that morphed into a terrifying leap of bulky muscle, wher sailing through air with all intention on knocking Avaia clear over, no holds barred. Maybe he could panic her into blunder, catch her on the trip. Heck, he'd settle for just disarming her with this one, one eye on the staff at all times.

Avaia still didn't want to hurt the wher, but she had a feeling if she pulled an attack again, Fenrauj would have her head. Sending a quick mental apology to the wher, she lowered the staff back to ready position just as he launched himself at her again. She had half a mind to take him head on, but remembering his massive build threw that idea to the wind. He could easily crush her if she didn't get out of the way.

Tucking the staff close to her, she ducked, rolling right under him and twitching the staff upward as her back connected with the ground. Her aim was off and she doubted she did more than possibly scrape him on the way, but the maneuver knocked the air clean out of her. Launching back to her feet, she swept the staff in front of her again, intending simply to keep him back for a moment while she sucked in several breaths.

She had thought she was in good shape, and perhaps she was for regular activities. Fighting a wher was a completely different experience. She would have to work extra hard to have the endurance to stand for long. Already the weight of the staff was dragging on her.

Avaia disappeared beneath him. Fenrask didn't bother trying to follow with a warning snap, he was far better off putting that effort into making a clean landing. But he hadn't expected her to try manoeuvring that staff amidst her escape. He'd thought her less ambitious than that.

It ran along his side, no force behind it, just a graze of misplaced aim and effort. The instant he was back on ground Fenrask kicked out a hind foot, scraping up sand and rising in a rapid arch, but it landed upon nothing. Avaia had removed herself from his range.

Turning about face he tossed his great head in threat as the girl swung with intention to keep him at bay, yet eyes never flicked a trace of red aggression. Fenrask rocked on his feet, thinking over the recent pass and unsure of the conclusion, so he glanced to Fen. She only shook her head. Clicking an affirmative the wher returned his steady attention upon Avaia. No hindering hurt made, play on as he had.

"How about for a change of pace, you make the next move?" Fen interjected bluntly. Not that she didn't enjoy seeing her brown beast problem solve in a spar, Fenrauj was just interested in seeing how the kid could handle herself in an entirely new situation. Cadet often made quick work on his missions, she wasn't so keen on stopping now that Avaia had gotten her attention.

The exchange between the wher and handler gave Avaia just enough time to gather back her breath. She stood poised, a little more confidently this time, until Fenrauj suggested she move first instead. Avaia paused. Offense? In the mines, where only axes and hammers had been her main weapons, she had always taken the defensive position. Offense would definitely be new. She paced sideways carefully, keeping the staff leveled toward wher as she considered her tactic. She seemed to have successfully convinced him she was less capable than she was. She also had yet to employ her full speed.

Recalling the fight between the handler and wher, she paused, considering. Perhaps if she mimicked Fen's earlier tactic, but changed it to suit her. That could certainly catch the brown off guard. She hoped, anyway.

Shifting her weight, she abruptly charged toward the wher, throwing as much of her energy into speed as she could. Gripping the end of the staff with one hand, she swung it wide toward his exposed side. As soon as the arc completed and she anticipated his dodge, she twisted her hand. Thrusting her arm back toward him, the staff slid through her hand like a javelin until she clutched the other end instead, jabbing it toward him.

She had kept enough distance between them to avoid his jaws and claws, but she remained poised on the balls of her feet, ready to lunge aside if he charged again. The fight wouldn't last much longer, as her screaming muscles informed her, but she was determined to keep going until he had her pinned.

Fenrask tracked her every move, falling into another circular prowl in mirror of Avaia until she decided what to do. Her choice of a speedy charge was a familiar one, if a little surprising, which he moved to simply evade what would be another wide swing. The brown didn't devote himself to it entirely though, diverting enough momentum to dodge yet maintaining the balance of a forward bound in hopes to catch her on the recovery.

Only Avaia had done more than just one strike. Fenrask hadn't time to dart from her reach, nor was he planning to. The tip sheared against thick neck as he lunged alongside the jab, making sure to drop his leading shoulder to avoid a 'piercing' penalty and feeling it successfully glance over top. But he hadn't been fast enough getting to her. Avaia retreated like she'd done before.

Not once had she done more than two blows without pause now, it was disjointed and broken yet he couldn't be too critical – she was new to this. Fenrask decided he just wouldn't let her escape next time. Giving Avaia little time to poise herself once she regained her distance Fenrask gave a predictable charge. Move as she wished, it wasn't her the brown was aiming for.

Jaws snapped around the wooden staff before the blunt end whizzed beyond his reach, allowing room to avoid a bladed tip should there have been one, digging deep and gouging lines as he gained firm purchase. For one short second things seemed to pause. He could feel the handler's disapproval of his methods but Fenrask didn't care, this was a risk he was more than willing to take in battle. In the next instant the pause was gone, powerful neck muscles flexing out and shoving the staff back into his opponent.

The falter it produced was all the wher needed, surging forward and swatting the two soft squish limbs out from under the girl, immediately placing one large forepaw against her to keep her there. Although Fenrask did not envelope Avaia's throat with parted jaws he still pressed calmly bared teeth against the vulnerable flesh, feeling the rapid pulse just a hair beneath such thin hide. A slurp heralded his attempt to suck back the drool passing his lips.

Dead also. He announced neatly, stepping off and offering a bowed head. It was intended as an aid to help her stand, a simple hand up if she just grappled around his head so he could pull. But whether Avaia even understood the wordless offer was another matter entirely.

Fen just scrunched her nose, not about to translate anything she didn't have to. "Not bad for a first, bit ambitious in places but ya got solid instinct there." Stretching out a knot in her back – she hadn't exactly warmed down had she – Fenrauj didn't hurry out of the brief pause it made, "Obviously you've heaps to polish up. Really ought to work on that stamina pronto, you look dead knackered kid."

Her strike had hit and Avaia felt both elated and apologetic. She didn't have much time to think about it, however, as Fenrask suddenly surged at her. His movements were too predictable, which meant he had to be baiting her. Her first instinct was to simply dodge as she had done so often before, but Fenrauj had told her to take the offensive. So instead, she sidestepped and swung the staff toward the huge lumbering wher and.... he caught it in his teeth.

The staff, she realized belatedly, and for a moment she just stared at him. She had no idea how to proceed, how to free the weapon from his powerful jaws. But then he was shoving the other end of the staff against her and she stumbled back. A heartbeat later and his claws swept her legs out form under her like swatting a fly. Her back struck the ground, knocking the air from her lungs once more, and then he was above her, one claw pressing her down and teeth at her throat.

She gasped for air, too stunned to move even if she had been compelled to. As he pulled back, bowing his head, she let loose a breathy laugh. "Faranth," she gasped, hesitating and then giving him an appreciative pat on the head. She intended to remain where she was for a while longer, sucking air back into her lungs, before she attempted to sit up. She was going to be sore tomorrow.

Rolling her head to peer at Fen as she spoke, Avaia offered a smile. "Thank... you." Slowly, she rolled up to a sitting position, rubbing her ribs where the staff had connected. "Swinging an... axe all day... has... nothing on... fighting a wher," she wheezed, shaking her head. She definitely did need to improve her stamina, she agreed.

She felt along the staff, making sure it wasn't damaged, before holding it out toward Fen once more. Her arm shook a little with the effort, but despite her tiredness she felt satisfied. Fen had praised her! Said she had good instincts. Maybe she could be a wher handler some day, with enough practice.

"You and Fenrask seem very close," she noted, smiling at the handler and then the wher. "So... do handlers and whers go everywhere together?" She frowned, remembering why she was there in the first place. "Wonder why that black wher was alone, then..."
