Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kalser smiled at Hama; for once, it was an honest, genuine smile. For the first time in quite awhile, he relaxed, allowing his guard to drop just the tiniest bit. She thought he was doing good work. She thought he was making progress with Kask, as much as it was possible to make progress with a gigantic black murderbeast. A bit embarrassed, he scruffed his hand through his hair once more.

"Well... I am pretty awesome," he said in reply, laughing at his own joke. "But thanks, Hama. He's a downright terrifyin' motherfardler when he wants ta be, but... well, he ain't so bad sometimes. Every now an' again, you get him to where you can see he's just a wher."

He felt Kask's attention pique at this, felt a pair of mental eyes suddenly settle their focus squarely on him. The weight of the gaze made him grimace slightly.

"Well... just a really smart, really aggressive, crazy feckin' wher, but... a wher nonetheless."

Satisfied by this analysis, Kask returned to his idle wandering, allowing his attention to fade from his handler.

When Hama mentioned the cussing, however, Kalser laughed outright and gave the woman a childish grin.

"Why, I've no idea. I'm a perfectly well-spoken gentleman, I am," he began, playfully straightening himself up and affecting a poor imitation of Jerund's usual stoic countenance. "I would never use such foul language, especially in front of a lady."

He snickered, then, shaking his head as he dropped the facade and gave his companion a bit of a sheepish smile.

"Seriously, though, I'm sorry he did that. Sure as shards wasn't expectin' him to go off cussin' at people. For what it's worth, I've never called you that."

The hand that flew up to Hama's mouth didn't quite smother the bark of laughter that burst out at Kalser's imitation. "What--was that Jerund? You're doing it all wrong. Too many words! Look." Hama stopped, withdrawing her arm so that both hands hung at her sides. Like Kalser, she drew herself up straight, then leveled a dead, unblinking stare at the blackhandler, adding a hint of disapproval to her resting face.

"You should not cuss," Hama said solemnly.

For all her effort, her imitation really wasn't any better. She had a face suitable for smiles, not scowls, and one broke across her features now. Chuckling, she returned to Kalser's side and continued toward the fireheights. The path rose up before them now, a steadily upwards trail that wound alongside the cliff face. Hama did not take Kalser's arm again; probably she would need all of her limbs to make this climb, if only for balance.

She glanced at Kalser as she started her way up and raised an eyebrow at his apology. "You haven't, eh? Well, I'm glad." She paused, thoughtful. "You know, in a way, it's kind of funny that he did that. Kind of like how it's funny when toddlers cuss?" Another pause; this time Hama wrinkled her nose. "Or maybe I'm the only one who thinks that's funny."

She shrugged nonchalantly and continued walking. "Whoo, I can already tell this is going to be a bitran of a hike."

Kalser laughed with Hama when she pinpointed the exact problems with his imitation, only to laugh harder when the woman attempted her own semblance of the stodgy brownhandler. The look didn't fit her at all--no matter how she tried, the grin couldn't stay off her face for long. Still, he couldn't help but enjoy himself at Jerund's expense, especially with Hama joining in with him. That man seriously needed to learn to lighten up, every now and again.

"Yeah, that--that's a bit more like him," he added, snickering as he wiped his eyes. "In my defense, I ain't known him sa long. Has he always been like that? Man needs ta pull the stick outta his tailfork 'fore we put him out in the fields scarin' wherries."

He grunted slightly when the path began its incline, letting out a soft snort as the grade grew steeper. Why did he agree to climb to the fireheights? Why was he going to drink on top of the fireheights and then attempt, at some point, to get his drunken fool self back down to his quarters? In retrospect, Kalser knew he was not the brightest man in the world. Still... the night was young and full of potential, provided neither of them managed to kill themselves on the way up.

"Heh," he muttered, grinning as they began their climb, "nah, I thought it was pretty shardin' funny, even if it was rude as all get out. Really is odd the things he'll say, sometimes. Guess I'm rubbin' off on the big jerk."

He huffed a sigh as he paused for a moment, squinting up the incline to try and get a better look at their destination. Hama was right: this was going to be one absolute bitran of a hike. And here he'd thought it would be a pleasant little stroll.

"Yeeeah. Well, 'least I'm walkin' with a Healer," he joked, jaunty smirk twitching onto his lips. "If I pass out, you can just give me the li'l kiss of life an' I'll be right as rain."

Hama could only shake her head and shrug, raising her hands in a helpless gesture. "I haven't known him that long either. I met him shortly before Hamask hatched and he left the Hold." But she had spoken to him more since his return--considerably more. He wasn't an unpleasant man exactly, but it was just as Kalser said: stick lodged firmly up tailfork.

She paused with Kalser, not nearly tired yet but wanting to stay close. As he looked upwards, Hama surveyed the trail before them, trying to judge its steepness. It looked manageable, but considering she was already starting to feel the burn in her legs, she had no doubt she'd be plenty happy to relax once they reached the top. Certainly the view would be worth it.

She fell back into motion, chuckling between increasingly heavy breaths at Kalser's mention of the kiss of life. Well, the man wasn't exactly subtle, was he? But Hama liked him. His jokes were straightforward, yes, but they were funny--at least to her, anyway.

"Not if I pass out first," Hama replied. She gestured vaguely toward him with one hand. "Look at you. You're in much better shape than I am. I bet you and Kask are training all the time, eh? You'll know you're really rubbing off on him when he starts complimenting me." She mirrored his smirk then. "Anyway, you'd better know the 'kiss of life' too. Just in case."
