Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Kalser stared at the bottle of Benden wine he'd bought--at considerable mark-up, sharding scalpers--as he paced restlessly in his quarters. His bandages needed tobe changed, and he knew Hama would be expecting him, but... Well, what if she wasn't in a good mood? Maybe he should put it off another day?

Kask eyed him lazily from the floor, eyes occasionally sparking red with annoyance. Stop moving, he rumbled, head shifting to lay atop his crossed paws. Is just a female. You want her, go and take her.

He stopped pacing, blinking at his wher a moment, only to resume his dizzying cycle once more.

"It's not that simple, I mean--I'm not a wher. Ladies don't just start runnin' and expect you ta chase 'em," he explained, rubbing his face with his forearm to try and keep the bandages on his hands from getting any worse. "You gotta do all this round about with 'em, do the little 'I like you but I don't like you any more than you like me' dance. You gotta be cool."

The black wher let out a soft snort. Females are easy. Show you are strongest, show you are smartest, prove you are best hunter, the hulking beast advised, flashing images of his own conquests in his human's jittery mind. You are best of the humans. Strong, ruthless in battle. Otherwise would not have chosen you. Females everywhere want strong mate.

Slowly, Kalser stopped his pacing. He stared at the black shadow that lounged against his bed, his mind slowly abandoning the dizzying cycles of anxiety now that Kask's own confidence had buoyed him up.

"...Yeah. Yeah. I'm the best. You're shardin' right," he began, rolling his shoulders as if preparing for battle.

You are strong.

"I'm strong."

You are attractive.

"Oh, I'm shardin' fine!"

The females want you.

"Feck yeah, they do!"

With a short, curt flick of his tail, Kask gestured with his head toward the door.

Go. Take your gift and woo the female.

With another roll of his shoulders, self confidence now through the roof thanks to his wher's unusual pep-talk, Kalser moved to grab the bottle of Benden's best and strutted on down the hall to Hama's room. He eyed the door for a moment, took a deep breath, and then rapped sharply on the wood--only to wince a little at the tiny spits of pain rushing through his injured hands.

"Hey, Hama," he drawled, heart suddenly pounding again as he tried to keep his composure. "I, uh... I brought the wine?"

He could feel Kask's groan in his head.

Hopeless.

A poor night's sleep left Hama wanting when Hamask woke her up and it was difficult to muster up the willpower to roll out of bed. She pounded a few cups of klah before heading off to work, where she spent most of her morning yawning and waiting for the caffeine to kick in. It was one of those days that passed in a haze, spent longing for the end; Hama could hardly wait to get out of there, knowing that she had a date waiting for her as soon as she was free.

It was a date, right? In her room, while Hama was brushing out her hair, she paused to look at Hamask, sending her that silent query. Hamask only tilted her head; blinked.

"Well, Kalser called it a date," Hama said, setting down her brush and eyeing her reflection in the mirror. Definitely an improvement over the way she'd looked last night. Of course, last night had set a low bar. Hair all over the place, bags under her eyes so heavy she probably could have carried firestone into Threadfall with them--yes, yes, definite improvement.

Then it is date, Hamask said.

"Maybe. I guess so." Then there was a knock at the door, and Hama shot her wher a grin before walking over to answer it. There was Kalser--oh, and there was the wine.

"Hi, Kalser." Hama offered him a warm smile, then stooped forward a little to get a closer look at the bottle, giving an appreciative whistle as she read the label. "Boy, you weren't kidding. Jays, I haven't had good Benden in ages." She stepped aside, beckoning him in. "Have yourself a seat. I'll just take a quick look at your hands and then we can crack that open."

Hama moved to the table where she had wrapped Kalser's hands the night before. She began unwinding the bandages, pulling them away, looking away only to glance briefly at Hamask. "Thanks for, ah, coming alone." She leveled a sheepish grin on Kalser. "I'll just have Hamask stay here, I think. Or--unless you'd just prefer to stay here? Or we could go to the dining hall, or..."

Faranth. She was babbling. Stay cool, Hama.

Kalser grinned stupidly when Hama greeted him, feeling like a wher caught in sunlight as he fumbled for a response. She noted the Benden, and then, finally, his brain began to slowly churn into action once more. He blinked quickly, cleared his throat, and grinned again as he headed inside to sit.

"I told ya I would bring the best," he replied finally, running a bandaged hand through his wild mane of hair. "What kinda man would I be if I broke a promise made to a pretty lady?"

He nodded to Hamask when the green was mentioned, giving the wher a friendly smile before looking back at Hama when she offered various venues for their Benden bender. He bit his lip, glancing at the wher once more. Well... he doubted things would get too frisky with that green hanging around like a shadow, which was... a bit unfortunate.

"Well, uh," he muttered, shrugging slightly as she started her work. "Wh-Whatever you prefer, really. I've got no plans, and Kask is content napping, so he won't be botherin' anybody. I'd suggest goin' out into the desert, havin' us a little look at the stars, but... well, people have a bad habit of getting picked off out there."

He let out a morbid chuckle at this, only to grimace slightly as he immediately regretted the possible mood killer. She was a Healer, after all, and she knew all these people and liked most of them.

"But, uh... yeah, I'm up for anything. Fine wine and finer women? What more can I ask for?" He winked at her, then, smiling once more as he looked her over.

Smooth, came the voice in his head, and he twitched slightly at the smug sarcasm he detected in the tone.

Shuddup, you. I got this.

Hama beamed at the compliment, before turning away to fetch her medical supplies. Having dragged them all out the night before, they were easy to find again. She began shifting them to the table.

Hamask watched from her corner, her eyes following Hama's movements before settling on Kalser. The green saw his smile. When whers bared their teeth like that, it meant bad things, but humans were different; it was a good thing in humans. Hama had taught her that. So Hamask warbled out a welcome.

After rinsing her hands, Hama sat across from Kalser and started removing his bandages.

She paused at Kalser's mention of the desert, but only momentarily. "They do, don't they?" she said, letting out a heavy sigh. Then, after a little shake of her head, a faint smile returned to her lips. "But that's not a bad idea you have there. Honestly, I think we would be safe as long as we stayed close to the Weyr."

With a redwort-soaked cloth, Hama attacked Kalser's wounds--pausing once to pick out a splinter she had missed the day before. Next, she applied numbweed in dabs.

"There are the fire heights, too," she added, reaching for new bandages. "If you're up for a bit of a hike, that is. Although"--she giggled--"that might not be a good idea with wine in me. I'm afraid I'm something of a lightweight--not that I'd run off a cliff or anything. Hah!"

Then she smiled, color rising under her dark skin. The blackhandler was full of compliments today. "Jays, Kalser, you flatter me. Oh, and you're all done." She withdrew her hands so that Kalser could inspect her work.

Kalser watched as the woman worked, considerably more comfortable in her office-slash-habitations than he had been the night that Jerund had dragged him down to get his hands seen to. When the little green wher warbled her hello, he laughed quietly, flashing Hamask a friendly grin--it was good to see another wher up close and personal, without the constant interference from Kask's sullen attitude.

"Heya, Hamask," he called out quietly, happy to see the green wasn't eager to beat him up for his black wher's poor social skills. "She's a right pretty thing, y'know. Pleasant shade," he added, mostly muttering to himself as he waited for Hama to finish.

But then she mentioned a trek outside the Vaioan walls--out to the fire heights, even--and Kalser found his attention quite returned to the woman in front of him rather than her wher. Shards, she even had a cute laugh.

"Yeah? Well, if you want to head out to the fire heights, I'll be glad ta escort ya--we can even bring Hamask if you want. Extra eyes to watch for trouble and whatnot. Or a helping hand to make sure you get home safe," he replied, giving her a broad smile. "I got nowhere important to be."

He beamed when she mentioned his flattery, though he was much more interested in the fact that she was finally finished picking away at his hands. Thankfully, they were feeling much better now that she'd tended to them again, even if they were still a bit raw and sore.

"Whatever you wanna do. I'm up for anything with you and a bottle of Benden." He winked at her then, grin turning jokingly roguish. Hama didn't seem the type to want a little extra company on first venture, but... well, never hurt to put the idea out there.

Full of compliments indeed. Kalser even had plenty to spare for Hamask, whose eyes brightened when she recognized a word she'd heard many times before and knew to be a good thing: pretty. A burble rising in her throat, Hamask stood and waddled over to nose Kalser's arm and express her appreciation.

Thaaaaank.

"Let's go to the fire heights, then," Hama said, her dark eyes eager. "It'll be an adventure." She focused on Hamask for a moment, considering Kalser's suggestion, but a wide, jaw-cracking yawn from the green wher solidified her decision. "I think Hamask can stay. She's tired. Anyway, I'm sure you can handle it," she answered with a sly grin to match his devilish smile.

Besides that, she didn't want Hamask there. She wanted privacy. As much as she loved her wher, Hamask's tendency to disregard personal space in her quest for attention would make her the worst kind of third wheel; Hama reflected on this as she watched the green shove her head under Kalser's arm in a silent demand for pettings.

"Come on, Hamask, leave the man alone," Hama said affectionately, standing. She ushered Hamask back to her bedding and obliged her with a moment of vigorous petting once she had settled down. "Alright, you. Be good while I'm gone."

Hamask chirped and set to snuggling into her blankets. Shards, she was probably relieved to get out of a hike, Hama thought. Lazy thing.

Hama turned to Kalser. "Ready when you are!"

Kalser laughed quietly when he heard the green's voice in his head, grinning as she moved to press her pale head under his arm to incite him to give her some affection. He obliged for a moment, giving her neck a nice scratch as she leaned into him, before chuckling when Hama gently shooed the green away.

"Fair enough," he drawled, stretching lazily before rising to his feet and watching the healer with her wher. He found himself half-wishing Kask would allow such a silly moment--usually, he obliged only a quick stroke or a pat or a brusque shake before moving away and snarling at further touching attempts.

Still, it would be good to get some time alone with Hama. Perhaps the fire heights would prove to be exceptionally romantic with a bottle of Benden and a fine sky filled with twinkling stars... A man could dream, after all.

With a lopsided smirk, he offered the woman his arm.

"Shall we? Oughta be a nice night--been fine weather, lately. Good cuddlin' weather," he added, playfully waggling his brows at her as he laughed.

Whatever ended up happening, Kalser was bound and determined to enjoy a night off from training and sparring and patrolling and all the other duties that came with being transferred into Iron Squad with his surly black. After all, with a bottle of fine wine and a pretty woman on his arm, what man in his right mind could have a bad evening?

Hama's only response was a pressed, restrained smile (barely restrained--she felt like a fool, grinning so much, when Kalser was acting so cool) as she wrapped her arm through his. He was considerable taller than her, but she still felt comfortable walking beside him. She paused to close the door behind her, glancing at Hamask one last time.

Daaaaaaaate the green whispered conspiratorially, even after the door was firmly shut.

Oh shard it, Hama felt herself doing the grinning thing again. Oh well, what did it matter? She had decent teeth, might as well show them off.

"So," she said presently. Now that they had a destination in mind, they could move on to other topics. They had the long walk--well, the whole night, really--to talk. "Yesterday, you said you and Jerund were going to whip Kask into shape." Something like that. "What's going on with that? Is Jerund mentoring you or something?"

Hama hadn't thought about that at the time, but later, after the men had left her room, she wondered what Jerund was even doing there in the first place. That was when she remembered what Kalser had said. Her curiosity had grown from there. To her knowledge, the two men didn't usually associate with each other.

She just couldn't help but be nosy.

Kalser couldn't help the smirk that came to his lips when Hama took his arm; how could he, when he was going on what could have very easily passed for a date with the pretty little lady? As they walked together, he found himself half-wishing he had fixed up and properly tuned his lute so he could have brought it along--after all, ladies loved romantic serenades. Still, he supposed it would all be passable enough without his romantic interludes, particularly with the way that Hama couldn't stop her own smile from constantly breaking out.

Yep, it was going to be a fine, fine evening.

"Hm? Oh, well," he began, clearing his throat and shrugging slightly with his one free shoulder. "Yeah, something like that. Kask kinda... ran off ta chase some wild tail after he lost those two runs, y'know, so... I had some issues, and Jerund had issues with me havin' issues, sa I decided it'd be best if we just worked together an' all. Get Kask some discipline. Make some friends. That old thing," he finished, his hand moving to rub at his long mustache.

"I figure Jerund's got all sorts of things he wants us ta do, but I guess it's worth it if it gets people ta trust Kask. He's a shardin' fine wher, just... little overboard, sometimes, on the... y'know, the whole aggression thing. Still, he ain't bit nobody who hadn't earned a biting, so. Can't complain, right?"

He was babbling. He was babbling and defending his wild hulking beast of a wher. Faranth, what a shaffit way to start a date.

When Kalser launched into his reply, really there was no opportunity for Hama to do anything other than raise her eyebrows and nod and make quiet exclamations here and there. Once Kalser got going, he got going. But Hama didn't mind at all; she liked to listen. And Kalser was presenting her with insights previously unavailable to her.

Like what it was like, being bonded to a wild wher.

Kask terrified her. He was without a doubt one of the scariest whers she had ever encountered in her lifetime. It was easy to write him off as a soulless, evil, bloodthirsty beast--an entirely different breed than her sweet Hamask. But Kalser's words reminded her that whers were not so one-dimensional; that it was a frame of mind she fell into easily, out of a long-entrenched habit of fearing the creatures.

And it was plain to see how much Kalser cared for his wher. That alone was cause for Hama to reevaluate her thoughts toward the black.

"For what it's worth," Hama said when the man finally silenced himself, "I think it's admirable what you've accomplished with him so far. I've heard a lot of people say that you can't bond with wild whers"--Jerund's voice was among the dissenters--"but you're proving them all wrong." Perhaps a little ineptly, but Hama was pretty sure she would have been dead by now if she were in the same situation. She offered a smile. "Kask still scares the piss out of me, but eh, pretty much every wher does," she laughed.

"I think as long as you and Jerund teach him not to cuss at me, I'll be happy. Where did he learn that, I wonder?" Her smile turned teasing.
