Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Oh man, oh man. Now that she'd gotten a grin and a laugh out of the lonely-looking rider, Gwen could truly count the encounter as a success. It hadn't been a belly laugh or anything earth-shaking, but she had time.

Aww! Green was such a cute answer, what with his dragon and all. That seemed to be a pretty common theme with riders - they kind of adopted the color of their bondmate and incorporated it wherever they could. Gwen was sometimes a little put out by the fact that she'd impressed a brown, since that wasn't particularly colorful or flamboyant and hardly a color that came to mind when one thought about parties, but then she remembered that Eamith was essentially her everything and the rest didn't matter. Besides, her brown did have that attractive blaze of orange on his throat, so if she felt the need to accessorize she guessed that could do.

"That's so sweet!" she cooed, and was about to babble some more, but brought herself up short when K'noa finally made a move to eat the muffin she'd basically forced on him.

(Gwen didn't feel guilty about that. Sometimes things had to be done in the name of friendship, and as far as forcing someone to do things went, eating a muffin was really rather tame, and ultimately beneficial. Muffins truly are the ultimate good.)

"Aren't they, though!?" She decided to help herself to a second one, happily going about the business of plucking a berry from near the top and eating that bit first. "The kitchen lady that helped me did such a wonderful job. I'm going to save a few for her as thanks."

"Oh? Well, blue is a very pretty color as well."

Briefly, she thought about Cedith and his bright bubbly hide, smiling softly to herself. But it wasn't like he was the only blue dragon she knew anymore, as a few others came to mind. Still probably her favorite, though.

"Mine has always been purple," Gwen divulged, though she hadn't been asked. "I had this absolutely lovely purple dress that I wore to gathers while I was still at the glasscraft Hall, it had such a cute ruffly hem that made twirling about the most fun thing I'd ever done. The feeling you get when someone is just spinning you around, over and over, it's fantastic! And then there's the ruffly skirt hem, all swirly and spinning with you, it just makes you feel so fancy!"

She reminisced for a moment, temporarily mourning the fact that that dress no longer existed, before perking back up. "Do you dance, Noa?"

It was nice to engage in some harmless, light conversation with a near-total stranger. Gwen certainly wasn't the first person he had met at Vaioa, but she was somehow the easiest to get along with... and that included his former wingmate, as well. Then again, Luca knew his baggage so things were a little more difficult with her. Gwen, however... she knew nothing about him other than the fact his dragon was green and his name used to be Kanoa.

He lifted the muffin to his mouth, munching it as politely as he could. He'd much rather stuff the whole thing in at once, but that was rude and he didn't want to end up choking himself anyway. Anyth was a steady annoying presence, reminding him to eat faster, take bigger bites, because shard it she would meet this Gwen if it killed her. Or if she had to bellycrawl her way into the lower caverns herself.

Keep your hide on, I'm eating.

He resisted the urge to hide behind the muffin when Gwen cooed, his face reddening. Yes, he knew how it sounded, but he honestly didn't think about things like colors. All that ever came to mind was the light green shade of Anyth's hide and the darker tint at her wingtips. He liked them--if that made them his favorite color, then so be it. He would put up with the teasing. "Yes, well... I see it everyday..." he mumbled.

He was a little surprised when she so easily bounced between the different subjects, a little relieved that she didn't dwell on them. Much easier than a regular conversation. All he had to do was nod and she'd just keep talking. As she confirmed just moments later, launching into a grand tale of her purple dress and how flowy it was. He caught himself trying to imagine it and gave his head a shake, only then latching onto something she had said.

"Glasscraft hall? You were a glasscrafter?" That was... surprising. He had her pegged for a harper or something along those lines, something that allowed her to be bright and cheerful and girly. "I didn't guess--" He broke off as she suddenly switched the subject to dancing, shrinking in his chair. "No. No, I don't dance." Please don't try to make me.

From the way he physically shrank away into his seat she guessed that she'd hit upon a potentially awkward subject. So dancing was a firm no. That was okay! It wasn't for everybody, and just because Noa didn't like to dance didn't mean that he didn't like other things.

"Yes, I was a glasscrafter," Gwen said, happy to pretend she didn't notice his demeanor shift. "A journeywoman, actually! I came to watch a Hatching with my auntie, and my Emmy hatched and came and found me in the stands." Her smile was something softer this time, sweeter, her eyes taking on a fond look. "He's always been that way, you know; has to make a show out of everything he does. If nobody notices him doing it, he might as well have not done it at all."

"But that's all in the past, I guess. I haven't even touched or looked at glass in, oh...over a turn, now." Her face transformed as her smile dropped, the corners of her lips tugging into a frown. She didn't think about her old craft very often anymore, but it did come up and it always made her miss it. She certainly wouldn't trade Eamith, but glass was what her life was all about for over half of the time she'd been alive.

Oh! She was being rude! She flashed K'noa a quick smile to assure him that she was just fine, shaking off her reverie. "What do you like to do with your time, Noa? When you're not with your greenie?"

He wasn't sure if Gwen just plain hadn't noticed the way he shied from the topic of dancing or if she intentionally glossed over it for the next subject. Either way, he was extremely grateful and he warmed toward her just a little bit more. She was definitely the easiest to interact with. Unbidden, and before he quite realized it was happening, he smiled.

His eyebrows rose as she retold the story of her Impression and he whistled lowly. "A stands impression? Don't see many of those. An has a tendency for drama, too, but her hatching wasn't so glamorous." He grinned, remembering the day, and chuckled. "She ran toward me shrieking about how the sand burned her tail and then tumbled into my legs. She's always been so clumsy. She stills tumbles all the time. In fact, just a month ago--" He broke off suddenly, realizing that he had spoken far more than he intended to. He flushed a little and returned his attention to his muffin.

He glanced back to her as she asked her question, frowning as he popped the last bite in his mouth. He chewed thoroughly, considering his answer, before swallowing. "I'm always with An," he replied, perplexed.

Fixing.

What?

She is asking your hobbies. Tell her you like to fix things and that I want to meet her.

Noa grimaced. "I like to... fix things. Like furniture." He patted the toolkit at his belt. "Don't do it much anymore, but I still like to. Also, Anyth wants to meet you but you don't have to please say no."

I heard that.

Gwen tossed her head back and laughed at the image of a little green dragon screeching across the sands. "It's not like I was graceful, either, you can tell her. I tripped and fell right out of the stands when I was trying to get to Eamith, there was sand everywhere."

She gave a few more little giggles as the thought lingered. Poor little thing, fresh from the shell and already panicking. Eamith had been so self-assured when he'd hatched, and hadn't really ever stopped. Gwen tilted herself toward K'noa, leaning against the table to catch her breath. It seemed like he was similar to most riders, then - every waking moment spent in the company of his dragon. But Riders still managed to pick up hobbies, even little ones, and it was kind of surprising that he hadn't.

But then her friend piped up, and her eyebrows rose, eyes widening. "You fix furniture? That's really impressive! You must have people asking you to help them fix things all the time!" Gwen had always been handy with her glasscrafting, but glass was a delicate and temperamental creature. Noa didn't really look like the masculine stereotype that she imagined whenever the term 'handyman' came to mind, but surely she'd learned by now that appearances weren't everything. "Do you make it, too? Or do you just fix the things that break? Either way, that's wonderful! Everyone should try to be helpful in their own ways, I think."

She hummed, pleased that she'd made friends with someone so industrious. Noa was speaking again, and when he'd finally gotten his sentence out she was laughing some more. "Oh, you don't have to be shy about your green! I'm sure she's beautiful, and I'd love to meet her. But, E-"

I want to meet them too, if you're meeting anybody. Eamith butted in before Gwen could even finish her sentence, stopping her in her tracks and causing an awkward silence while she sat there with her mouth half-open. Come stand out here in the 'bowl so that his green has room to be next to me. I have to inspect this new friend of yours.

Gwen pulled a face, clamping her lips shut and puffing out her cheeks in mild annoyance. "He didn't even let me get all my words out. I was going to say that Eamith would like to meet the two of you as well, but the bossy busybody had to go and insist that we all tromp out to the Weyrbowl." She turned her head to pretend to inspect a group of riders at a table off to the side, giving K'noa some vague privacy as she asked, "Would that be okay?"

Not many people laughed like that, with their whole body and soul. Watching her become completely wrapped in her mirth brought a smile to his lips and he tapped his fingers absently against his leg. He was personally more of the soft chuckle type, but he thought Pern could be a much better place if more people were like Gwen. It was rare for him to think something like that, but the more time he spent sitting there with the brownrider, the more he realized just how fascinating she was. He'd never met anyone else like her.

Before he could bat an eye at her sand remark, she was off on his hobby like an eager runner. "Yes, I fix furniture," he affirmed, his tone pleased. He looked a little proud, but shyly so, as if he wasn't sure if he was allowed to be proud of his skill. He blinked and shook his head slowly. "No, nobody ever asks me. I don't really... tell people. I've never tried making it, either," he added.

He'd never thought about it, really. It had always just been a way to pass the time. But that was a thought. Maybe when they were more settled and things slowed down, he would give it a try. Building something, as opposed to simply fixing it. How interesting! The possibilities distracted him for a moment as he pictured a chair of his own crafting or a table that would never be reduced to wobbling.

He was brought sharply back to the conversation as Gwen laughed again and ignored his plea and he did his best not to whimper as she charged ahead full speed with meeting Anyth. She was silent in his head for once, but he could feel how pleased she was by the turn of events. At that moment, the woman cut off mid-sentence and stared vacantly off at nothing. Noa wasn't surprised or alarmed--really, it was quite common for riders--and he concluded it could be one of two things. Either her dragon was talking and she was only capable of focusing on one conversation at a time. Or... her excessive energy had finally sputtered out and she had short-circuited. The latter thought made him smile again.

The weyrbowl?! I'll be there in a moment! Anyth cried jubilantly. Sensing her rider's lingering reluctance, she paused and gave a soft, please?

Stifling a sigh, Noa brushed the crumbs he'd left from the table. Anyth's begging coupled with Gwen giving him an actual choice overpowered his resolve. He got to his feet, turned halfway toward the path to the weyrbowl, and cocked his head toward it. "Shall we?"

Gwen popped up from the table, scooping the handle of her muffin basket back over one arm. "It's always educational to try new things. You learn a lot about yourself in the process! My little sister went for nine turns of her life before she realized that she was actually left handed, you know. Everything was so much easier for her after that!"

It had been a while since she'd really thought about her family back home. All those brothers and sisters, and of course her mother and father. It was wonderful having auntie Heliodor here, especially since she'd always felt very close with her, but that was different from constantly being surrounded by family. Sometimes she missed it, an ache too deep for even Eamith to soothe away.

"Do you have siblings?" She asked K'noa, flouncing up to walk alongside him on their way to the weyrbowl. "I have sooooooo many. Father married twice, you see, and had lots of children. I always thought I wanted to have a very big family of my own some day, but, well..." Gwen waved a hand at the Weyr at large, a kind of airy, hand-flappy motion to indicate her change in lifestyle. "I guess there's not really anything stopping me, but it'd be awfully inconvenient to be trying to fly on a dragon and be all pregnant and whatnot at the same time."

Eamith felt like he had a lot to say about that topic, particularly about how it probably wasn't appropriate, but ultimately decided it was funnier to let this K'noa guy deal with it on his own. He seemed awkward and shy, everything his Gwen wasn't, which made for boring conversations. Gwen was always doing all the talking, and he already knew everything that went on in her head. She very rarely surprised him.

He winged his way down to the 'bowl, letting out a brassy bellow to announce himself, just in case Anyth happened to be hanging around already. He wasn't exactly sure on what the green looked like, and he didn't want to just go about introducing himself to every green in the 'bowl until he found the right one. That would take him days.

I'm here, Gwen! He called, peering through the large open doors that led into the lower caverns. The hallway was bustling with people, being the lunch hour and all, and a few of them laughed at him, others skirting out of his way.

"You're not a weyrling to be lurking in doorways anymore, Em!" Gwen called out to him once he was in sight, though she laughed, more amused than anything else. The brown waited patiently for his rider to emerge from the doors, her social cargo in tow, before opening his mouth imperiously.

I want one of those muffins, he explained, waggling his tongue a little. You made such a big deal out of them, I want to try one.

She laughed, loud and surprised, but reached into her basket and lobbed one of the muffins into Eamith's mouth anyway, calling out, "I'll be surprised if you're even be able to taste it, it's so small in comparison to your big ol' tongue!"

It tastes...like that bread I had once, the brown mused. He didn't seem very pleased, as though the muffin's lack of extraordinary flavor had personally offended him.

Noa frowned, brow furrowing, as Gwen told her story. "She didn't know? How could she not know? Why didn't she just try using her left sooner?" he asked, baffled. It made perfect sense to him. Then again, he was also left handed, but had known that from the beginning. He had always held his tools in his left hand as he repaired things and hadn't ever really noticed others used their other hand until well into his adolescent years. That was getting off topic, though.

Not that it mattered, because Gwen just plowed right on to the next topic. Siblings now, was it? He had a feeling she might know everything about him by the end of the evening if she kept up her string of questions. "No," he answered, and then jolted in surprise. "I mean... yes. I do. Three of them, all older." His expression was confused. It had been so long since he had thought about his family, had he really forgotten his siblings? The thought unsettled him a little. Certainly they hadn't been really worthy of being remembered, but... maybe Anyth was rubbing off on him. Maybe his own memory was starting to go.

His nerves on that subject only redoubled when Gwen fell into step with him and he glanced sidelong at her. She was small. He was used to people being either his height or taller, so it was unusual for him being able to look down at someone. Especially a girl, with her... neckline so... He jerked his gaze forward, his face red, and it finally clicked that Gwen was, in fact, a woman. He didn't know how to deal with girls, not since Sia. Not since... He swallowed. An, I'm out of my depth here. I'll just hop on your neck and we can fly away, okay?

We will do no such thing, Anyth replied with a sniff, slowly spiraling to the Weyr floor. She already saw a brown standing by the lower caverns entrance and she assumed that was probably Gwen's dragon. Hello~ I'm Anyth! She chimed, practically prancing her way toward him.

Noa stifled a groan, determined to keep his attention forward and not think about the fact that he was socially stunted when it came to interacting with girls. How had he managed the conversation until now? His lips twitched. The answer was that he hadn't. Gwen had carried the whole conversation.

He said nothing as they approached the brown lurking in the entrance and Gwen tossed a muffin in his huge mouth. He felt better just keeping his lips glued shut and looking off at the weyrbowl rather than what was going on around him.

Anyth, on the other hand, was intrigued. She brought her nose close to Gwen's basket, snuffling. Those smell interesting. I want to try one.

"An, that's rude," Noa remarked absently, still gazing off at nothing.

Anyth huffed. May I please have one, Noa'sfriend? she amended.

Noa did turn then, his cheeks going pink again. She's not my friend.

Yes she is, she stated with unwavering confidence.

Eamith eyed the green that came prancing up, matching her with K'noa once she announced her name. How did such a cheerful dragon end up with a lump of stone like this new friend of Gwen's? Although, he supposed, he and his Gwen were very different, but at least he was capable of contributing to a conversation. Perhaps his rider was over-capable, and that sapped the ability from those near her. But that was a silly idea, Eamith thought. Surely humans didn't work that way?

"Noa'sfriend, huh?" Gwen said with a giggle, captivated instantly with Anyth. She knew her wingmates' dragons by name and sight, but had never really gotten to interact with any of them. Meeting new dragons was almost always a pleasant experience, though, and she realized that perhaps she ought to make more of an effort. "And yes, you can definitely have one!" The great green nose snuffling at her basket had her hair and clothes ruffled by the dragon's breath, but Gwen really seemed not to mind. Eamith had, afterall, always been a very clingy dragon, and being breathed on was old hat by this point.

"They have some berries in them, but I don't know if you'll actually be able to taste that," she said, picking a muffin from the basket and holding it out toward Anyth. "Do dragons like sweet things?"

I could barely taste it all, Eamith grumbled to everyone present. Bread does not have a big taste, especially little bread like that. The brown then eyed K'noa in particular, and though Gwen felt the mischief stirring in his mind, she seemed to be ignoring it.

Do you have a sweet tooth, Gwen'sfriend? Eamith asked the greenrider, rumbling. Because my Gwen is sweet, and I would not want you to have your teeth rot out.

"Eamith!" What?

"I'm sorry about him," Gwen said, cheeks tinted pink. "He's like a big overbearing father figure."

Anyth noticed the brown watching her and tilted her head coyly. Whether he was admiring her or looking down upon her (way, waaay down) she was going to make him like her. Everyone liked her. There was no reason this one should be different. Like what you see, handsome? she crooned. If dragons had eyelashes, you better believe she'd be batting them.

Noa was in mental anguish, resisting the urge to beat his head repeatedly against the nearest hard surface. It would be just his luck for Eamith to catch Anyth in the next flight and then things would go from mildly uncomfortable to full on awkward. Not only would he have to face Gwen again, but he would have to face her... without clothes. And that was definitely not something he was prepared for. Maybe he should've stayed at High Reaches after all.

Nonsense. I like this Weyr much better.

Noa wouldn't admit that he did, too.

Swiveling her head back toward Gwen, Anyth brightened when the woman gave her permission to try a muffin. She flicked her tongue toward the proffered treat, slurping it into her mouth with a wet snap. I like sweet things, she stated, munching away happily.

Noa snorted, crossing his arms over his chest like a shield. "You've never had a sweet thing in your life."

She turned one whirling eye on her rider and crooned. I have you.

The greenrider blushed, squirming where he stood, and found himself suddenly faced with the attention of the brown as well. The question threw him off guard and he frowned. Did he have a sweet tooth? "Not particul-" He didn't even finish the response before Eamith delivered his comment. His jaw dropped and the light blush in his cheeks flamed into a full on red.

"I-I-" His mouth flapped like a fish out of water and he shrank away from Gwen, looking particularly horrified. His first thought was to declare he had honorable intentions, but that wasn't right. He barely even knew this woman. "I have no intentions! I mean I don't intend to-" He broke off again, his frantic gaze moving from Eamith to Gwen. Anyth watched with amusement, unwilling to save her rider. "I mean... It's not that you're not pretty! Cause you are! I just- I wouldn't- Faranth, I'm going to go jump off my ledge now."

Anyth rumbled and lifted her head toward Eamith, huffing amusement. You broke Mine. I would appreciate if you didn't do that. She lowered her head back to the humans and shoved her nose against her rider's very red face. Calm down, Noalove. It isn't even your mating time.

"Shards, I hate my life sometimes..." he groaned.
