Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

A new page. A new life. Olimar could not be more excited for the future. His life had been fine up until this point. He worked a steady job as a shipbuilder for many years. His life was dull to him. Dull and empty. He had never found love. He had no companion aside from the irritated looking brown firelizard that was perched on his shoulder regally. Olimar placed his small sack of things from his home in his new quarters before trying to find his way to the Kitchens. The Hold had many halls with many rooms, unfortunately, and Oli had certainly taken a wrong turn.

The wher candidate wandered past wher handlers' quarters, slowly ambling along. He felt as though he was trespassing and walked with great care as to not make sound. Oli was not used to caves as a living space. He would have to spend most his time down here now, he supposed. No more baking in the sunshine while laboring away. This was fine by him.

A few wher handlers had their doors open, whether or not they were in there, and Oli found himself peering into a few. He couldn't help himself! He was new, this was oddly fascinating, and before he knew it, he was standing in the middle of a sands reserved for whers. He had heard there would be a clutch here soon. It was so thrilling to think that in just a few short weeks he might be a handler. He stood akimbo, wide eyes admiring the warm sandy room.

He wandered off once more, back through the halls of the hold. He wound up down in the lower rooms where the miners housed themselves with some of the holdfolk. Oli met a couple locals, but didn't hang around. He really wanted to meet a wher handler, or a candidate, anyone who could tell him more about the running whers and when he might get an egg! The anticipation was too much, and even during troubled times he could not hold back the gleeful excitement. Oli made his way back up to all the quarters where his peers lived. He kept an eye out for anyone, peeking into rooms, hoping to spring his friendship on some unsuspecting innocent.

Exploring the outside of their new home had eventually turned into them exploring the insides more. It was a bit of a maze, but the twins figured the more they walked around the better they would be prepared for finding certain places. Eventually they'd stumbled into the handler's quarters and Verdani was looked as if she was about to start bouncing off the walls. "Ya that excited, hm?" Verdanya asked, a brow rising as her sister poked her head into an open door just to come right back out with a slightly disappointed face. "Shards, yes! It'll be even better if we see one of the handlers." Dani flashed a grin at her mirror image before darting off further down the hallways. There had to be at least one of the handlers in their rooms and she was going to find 'em!

She wasn't able to get very far when, in her excitement (or lack of attention according to Verdanya), she ran into what felt like a wall. A very solid, very big wall. "Ooof, what the feck?" Basically bouncing out said wall, Verdani blinked and looked forwards only to find a chest. Another blink and she tilted her head up to catch sight of a man. A very large man. "You're fardling huge!" While out of some people's mouth it might've sounded like an insult but Dani's voice was filled with awe. She'd thought she was pretty talk for a girl but man, if only she couldn't been as tall as this guy. And he looked so fit! A quick whistle escaped her lips; obviously she needed to work out more.

"Really? Rude, Dani, very rude." Verdanya finally caught up with her sister and gave the beast of a man a glance over before offering a polite smile. "I'm sorry, my sister isn't the most polite person. Ya will just have to forgive her manners." Verdani stuck her tongue out before offering a hand to shake the male's. "I'm Verdani and don't listen to her. She's just got a stick shoved up her tailfork." Her head jerked in the other girl's direction. "She's Verdanya, b'the way."

He had spied the two women as he came around a corner, still wandering the handlers' quarters. He saw one rather excited one look into a room, then come out looking disappointed. Similar to what he had done moments ago in his search for wher handlers to question. Perhaps they were candidates as well, maybe they weren't, either way they would have information. While Oli was lost in thought, one of the women had ran right into him.

Olimar couldn't help but laugh heartily at the explicit response the startled woman gave. His laugh was loud and echoed, joy twinkled in his eyes. "Yes, I would say so!" He put his plate-sized hands on his hips and regarded with twins with intrigue. Pretty uncommon to see twins around! They were so pretty, too; not that they were his... type, per say. Verdanya apologized for her sister's behaviour, and he couldn't help but make a quip he'd used many times before; "Language never bothered me a fardlin' shard!" His bellowing laughter roared once again, his head tossed back.

"Pardons," he said to Verdanya as he took Verdani's hand, trying not to be too rough with his shake. Verdani clearly had a silver tongue, which amused Olimar without fail so far. He liked this one. He imagined her sister was not as bad as she implied. "Verdani, Verdanya, a pleasure to meet you both," he went to shake Verdanya's hand as well, "I am Olimar, but Oli is fine." He was most pleased with his exploration so far, already making humourous acquaintances and whatnot.

"No offense to ya both," he said, becoming slightly more serious, "But yer not handlers, are ya?" He eyed them, sizing them up. They looked fairly tough, but not wizened or experienced as he imagined handlers would look. "It's just that I'm new around here," he clarified, hoping he had not injured the feelings of his new found companions, "I was looking to run into some handlers or other candidates..." Oli trailed off, sounding hopeful, "Maybe not quite so literally!"

Verdani couldn't help the smug smirk that appeared on her lips as the man said that her language hadn't bothered him. Verdanya really needed to realize that not everyone was that uptight! Besides, it had been true! The guy was huge and even she would probably have some trouble with taking him down should they have ever gotten into a fight. (Okay yes, she was probably stretching it a bit there; he could probably knock her around until she was silly in the head.)

"Seeeee, 'Danya! M'language doesn't bother 'em a fardlin' shard!" She wasn't too far behind the beast of a man in laughter as she nudged her sister's side. As he took her hand to shake, the woman narrowed her eyes a bit and made sure to make her grasp firm. Verdani didn't want him to think he needed to treat her delicately, she wasn't some flower! And if he was going to around often, she didn't want him to tell anyone else to treat her gently. Feck that, she could wrestle with the best of their men! Sadly, that was certainly something she would do; regardless if she had a chance of winning or not.

Verdanya merely nodded her head as the man shook her sister's hand before he moved to take her own. Unlike her sister, she didn't feel the need to make sure this man knew she might be stronger than she looked, instead she just let him do as he pleased. "It's a pleasure to meet ya as well, Oli." She had been about to call him by his full name but a side glance from Verdani had her cutting it short with a mental eyeroll.

Then Olimar went and mentioned handlers, which had Verdani bright eyed once more as she straightened up. "Nah, not handlers. But I'm here to be one!" She grinned and reached out to smack her new friend's, yes she had decided he would be her friend, arm. "We're new too, tha's why we wre explorin'! Didn't run into any handler either though..." She trailed off, brows furrowed for a moment before it was quickly replaced with another grin. "Ah well, you ran into another candidate alright!"

"Woah, don't lump me in there with ya." Verdanya protested, waving her hand as if to dismiss the idea. "I'm quite happy with what I am, thanks." Turning her head, well more like tilting it up, she offered a slightly warmer smile to Oli. "I'm a smith who got dragged here by this one and her 'big dreams'!" Her eyes narrowed as they returned to look at her sister once more. "Apparently getting the chance to beat the 'shaffit', pardon my language, outta bandits is something important enough to drag us all the way out here."

"An' tha weather. Love this shardin' weather!" Verdani quipped.

They were twins, but it was easy to see they were very different people. He noted Dani had a firm handshake, so when she said she was here to be a handler he wasn't surprised. She was an energetic little fighter in Olimar's eyes; he liked that. He hoped he would find a friend in this fellow wher candidate. Smiling all the while, he nodded approvingly at Verdani.

"A smith?" He responded to Verdanya, clearly impressed. "That's a good trade. Lots of work for you here, too." These girls were smart and capable, not qualities often possessed by the women back in his Hold. When she explained why Dani had an interest in fighting bandits his face went a little somber, but he still held a small smile. "I'd say it is." Olimar regarded Verdani with greater scrutiny. It was clear from her face, no offense intended, that she was a scrapper. She had a scar and her nose had that telltale sign of being broken once or twice before. Verdani seemed so bright and energetic, though... how did she even get into fights, the sweet thing? Clearly, she was not one to make assumptions about.

"I'm sure we'll be watching each other's backs out there soon enough, Dani." Olimar grinned a little more brightly at the thought of getting to bash some skulls. "There are eggs o' plenty on the horizon. And I've been saving up my marks for a long while!" He couldn't help but be swept up in the excitement of bonding to a wher. Throughout the dark times of life on Pern it was always important to focus on the lighter parts of life that make it worthwhile.

"I hope I get a big, tough guy. I want to be out there on the front lines." He stated a little more boldly than he felt. He still hadn't had experience with weapons or fighting. This is why he wanted a wher in egg form; so they could grow together and train. "I'm not, uh-- I don't know how to fight, though..." Oli admitted cautiously, trailing off. He half-expected Dani to immediately throw a punch or grapple him as he said it. He was leading her, hoping she would offer to train him. In fact, Verdanya looked like even she could handle herself better than him. He was large and bulky, but slow and lacked experience. Tactic and skill are huge deciding factors in battle, and Oli was equipped with neither. He wasn't even sure what kind of weapon he would want to use.

"Tha's one of the reasons she managed to convince me to come here with her." Verdanya admitted, a fond but slightly annoyed smirk curling at the edge of her lips. Verdani was always managing to convince her to go along with different plans so it wasn't anything new. Said twin snorted and cocked a brow at her sister. "'Cause someone has to drag ya around otherwise ya'd be bored outta ya mind stuck in the same place foreveeer!" The scarred twin wiggled her fingers in an attempt to seem spooky. Staying in the same place forever was Verdani's nightmare, not Verdanya's.

Sensing Olimar's gaze on her, Verdani looked back up at him and smirked. She was quite used to people staring at her scar and figured he was wondering just how she managed to get into fights. People assumed things about her just because of her personality. It didn't mean she didn't have a temper now and then. Or maybe there were the few occasions when she might've taken some man's marks from him in a good game of dice and he didn't like it. Either way she knew how to take care of herself, regardless of how happy and bouncy she seemed to others. It was also a good way of getting the advantage in any fight. "There's a whole lotta back for me to watch, but I'll do it!" She teased, smacking him once more on the arm in good humor. Grinning, the rubbed her hands together in glee while Verdanya rolled her eyes at the two. She couldn't fault them though, she got just as excited about certain work projects.

"Same 'ere! Can't wait to see what comes outta 'em." She nodded along as her giant new friend went on to say he wanted a wher that would allow him to be on the front lines. "Me too. I wanna be out there fightin', not hanging out here doin' nuthin'." A smack on her arm from her other half and she rolled her head. "'kay, 'kay. Not doin' nuthin' but not doin' what I wanna." This resulted in the two of them having a bit of a stare off before Oli's confession had both set of eyes turned to him in surprise. He didn't know how to fight? Well, that couldn't last long. Not with him trying to enter the wher troop and Verdani having already planned to use him as a spar buddy. At least before this confession.

The two looked at him with mouths agape for a bit longer before simultaneously nodding. "Well, that's gonna change." Even that was said together, not bothering the two of them as they'd done it before. Others had found it creep though, not that the two had paid much attention to that. "I'll help ya out! Verdanya will too!" "Wheeen, she gets a chance. I do have to work to do as well, y'know." Verdani narrowed her eyes for a moment before she was circling around him. "So ya know nuthin' about fighting? Never been in a fight or anythin'?" She couldn't help but find that a bit hard to believe. Even Verdanya had gotten into a few fights back when they were a bit younger.

Olimar felt a little ashamed when Dani stared incredulously at him. "No, never." Oli answered, feeling more bashful every moment. He averted his gaze, resisting the urge to fidget nervously. Maybe it was normal for men around here to get into brawls, and it certainly wasn't uncommon in the Seahold, but Olimar didn't start fights and no one dared start one with him. He was more of a lover than a fighter; as cuddly as a canine pup. That was half the reason he left his home, as well. Not a lot of options for him romantically there. Not that that was something he wanted to discuss at the moment.

"I don't think it will too hard for me to learn." He amended, looking at Dani hopefully. He didn't want his first impression to be a bad one; he sincerely hoped she wouldn't go telling everyone he was a secret softy who never raised a hand in anger. "I mean, I have been swinging a hammer all my life!" His smile returned, though he knew hitting a large piece of wood was not similar to actual fighting at all. He figured he would probably use a big ol' hammer when it came time to fighting. It felt right.

"Do you have experience making very, very big hammers, Verdanya?" He asked his silly question politely, meant in teasing not mockery. He did have a fair amount of marks saved from work, he imagined he might be able to get a decent weapon made. Verdanya seemed to take her work seriously. He doubted she would allow herself to sell anything to someone that wasn't of good quality. A blacksmith he could trust! "I could really use something so heavy that Dani couldn't lift it if she wanted to." Eyes crinkled with laughter as he guffawed at himself.

Opps, they hadn't actually meant to make him feel bad about it. Verdanya immediately felt bad as well, jumping to the conclusion that just because he looked the way he did that he would know how to fight as well. Apparently she'd just gotten so used to how Verdani was that it was odd to her that someone had never been in at least one fight; regardless of it's outcome. She not to gently jabbed an elbow into Dani's ribs to get her sister to stop with the gaped mouth look.

Pulling a face, Verdani rubbed her abused ribs with a small glare at Verdanya. "No, no it shouldn't be too hard to learn." She agreed, returning her attention back to him. She thought for a moment before a wide grin began to tug at her lips. "This could be a good thing." Was mumbled to herself before Oli mentioned that he'd been using a hammer his entire life. "A big hammer? Well you have tha brute strength going on for sure, but some practice without it would be good."

Quickly making her mind, Dani rubbed her hands together in glee. "I can teach ya! Shards, I can already see how fun this is gonna be. Though, I may have to change a few things up. Considerin' well...y'know." She waved her hands at the entirety of him. He was taller and broader than her, so some of the things she did wouldn't work for him. But she was sure they could work around that.

When the wher candidate's attention shifted to her, Verdanya furrowed her brows at the question. "A large hammer, eh?" A hand rose to tap a finger against her chin. "It's possible. Might take a while 'til I get it right since I've never done one before." That would pose as an interesting challenge. And perhaps some of her first work here in Vaioa? It didn't cross her mind that he may have just been teasing. That is until he made the comment about Dani. Snorting, she gave a quick roll of her eyes. "Wouldn't stop her from tryin'."

Verdani smirked and lifted an arm to flex her muscles playfully. "No, no it wouldn't." Then she fell into laughter with Oli. "Should make it anyways though. Never know when ya might need a giant fardling hammer."
