Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

It was noon. Time for the Candidates' lunch break. And yes, while it was important to get something to eat, and Layla would be doing just that - later - that was not the main reason that she had retreated to the Lower Caverns of Vaioa Weyr.

She had traveled with her gitar, feeling the intense need to play. But it was far too hot outside at this time of day to relax in the Weyrbowl, she felt. So she decided to retire to somewhere cooler and find a somewhat quiet corner to play in.

Finding the cooler location was not a problem. Finding a quiet spot, however, could prove to be problematic, as the whole area was bustling with people traveling every which way.

Staring at the quantity of people present, the redhead sighed. This all seemed like a bit of a futile effort. Perhaps it was better to wait until nightfall as she did her first night at the Weyr, and claim a spot in the spacious Weyrbowl to strum then.

Still, she thought, gripping the strap of her instrument. She was here now. It wouldn't make sense to not even look for a possibly suitable place to sit and work. No, she would try. And if that failed, then she would get something to eat and simply wait for the night.

As he walked back from the rider's weyrs with a now-empty, cloth-lined basket that he used to deliver commissions and mended garments, Marcius was starting to wonder if he'd ever have the time to work on some of the complex projects more worthy of a masterweaver that he'd had in mind for a long time now. Every time he got on top of his workload, a Gather or Hatching would pop up and cause a rash of new commissions and requests to eat up all his time- it was all he could do to keep it more or less under control, but it left him with barely enough time to do a little socializing, make small gifts for those in his favor and create a few simple new hangings and tapestries for the Weyr and the crafthall, to keep it looking fresh and up-to-date. Still, he couldn't really call himself unhappy on account of it; more of a very mild annoyance that wasn't hard at all to keep quashed. That was just his nature.

Lost in thought, he turned a corner on automatic, abruptly noticed a young lady right in front of him, and barely braked in time to avoid a collision. "Shards! Sorry about that." the mastercrafter quickly apologized with an easy grin, rocking back on his heels to stabilize his lanky form. "Teach me to not check around corners first... Were you lookin' for something, miss?" he inquired in his usual friendly manner. He well remembered his days of getting lost every few minutes at the Weyr- he still did occasionally even now, after a year of spending half his time living in the lower caverns.

The shock from the near-collision caused the Candidate to jump and let out a little "Ooh!" But as it subsided, she laughed, embarrassedly as she worked to reclaim her breath. Layla's hand remained at her chest, as if further reassuring her heart that things were fine and it could slow in its beating once more.

"It's okay!" she replied breathlessly. "It's okay," she repeated, more steady this time, with a nod and a laugh. "Just searching for a quiet place to practice my music. Perhaps, in retrospect, looking for parts of the Weyr that could almost be considered abandoned was not a smart idea."

Layla realized then that perhaps the spot she had chosen had only been temporarily abandoned and, other times, served some purpose after all. "I'm sorry, is this where you meant to store your basket?" she asked. "I can move if you need the space."

Marcius eyed the young woman briefly to make sure that she did seem all right and wasn't just saying so; he still felt bad for not checking ahead of himself. "No, no, I was just passing through on my way back to my workroom." the weaver was quick to assure, tapping the empty basket on his arm. He tilted his head contemplatively when she mentioned looking for a quiet place to practice. "No, it's a smart thought- it's quiet enough down here for the most part, but there's not exactly anywhere you can sit easily unless you want to get in a storeroom and risk unwanted audience members..." he mused. "If you don't want to go outside, normally I'd suggest the Hatching Sands, though for goodness sakes' not anywhere between a queen rising and the completion of the Hatching." he was swift to qualify with a wry chuckle. Marc doubted that Oceth would care to be serenaded by a candidate while she sat with her current clutch... though who knows?

The masterweaver frowned a little, wanting to help the girl out but feeling useless. "I imagine it's doubly tricky to find playing time with how hard the candidatemasters work you." he added sympathetically, having identified the knots she wore- candidate free time seemed to be in fairly scarce supply.

To the weaver's concern about timing, Layla gave a lopsided frown. Her gaze drifted slightly to the side of the cave and she rubbed at her arm. "It is a bit difficult," she admitted. "You kind of have to carve things out of your already set schedule. Like, you may have to cut your meals a little short, for instance..." Her sheepish look returned to the stranger, and she smiled. "Well, who knows. Maybe if I Impress, I can be one of the first musicians to play on dragonback and squeeze time in then." Layla laughed. She was joking. Mostly.

At the mention of the Hatching Sands being used as a potential practice ground, the girl turned thoughtful. "That part of the Weyr would have particularly nice acoustics," she said. "It's shaped well, and it's big enough." One hand went to her chin. The other cradled the first's elbow. Finally her gaze went back to Marcius. "You are right, though." Layla smiled. "It would probably not be a good idea to practice while Oceth is there. I...don't exactly know what her stance is on music." She laughed. With a shrug, though, the redhead shifted a bit, looking as if she were planning to lean against the wall. But before doing so, she remembered that she had her gitar strapped to her back. That was probably not the best idea.

"As for practicing in the storeroom," said Layla, "I honestly have no problem with an audience as long as the audience has no problem with me."

"Who knows indeed? There has to be other riders around who started off harpering, though; for a certainty there are representatives of every other craft that have Impressed." Marc opined. He nodded when she considered the possibilities of the Hatching Sands; though he'd have to take her word on the 'acoustics', as that was a thing not relevant to his own craft, sadly. "Could always ask her, or her rider, Atlen, who knows?" Though surely no one, Marc included, would hold it against the young candidate if she opted to wait till the sands were completely vacant, especially after rumors of how fractious Oceth had been during her mating flight. A thought occurred to him, with the topic on music- "Have you met the Masterharper here yet?" he inquired. Surely Numael would know about good places to practice for a young musician.

Thinking of another mastercrafter, it occurred to Marcius that he had never gotten around to introductions. "Ah, sorry, my manners have gone begging." the tall man apologized wryly. "I'm Marcius, masterweaver for Weyr and Hold here." He offered the hand that did not hold the light basket- he was always happy to meet new people, whatever rank they might be.

Layla tested a string on her gitar as the man spoke. He was right. She could ask Atlen or Oceth to use the Hatching Sands for practice. They were certainly a good source of acoustics. And while it was possible that she could find another location in the Weyr that was equally as apt or at least near as good for her playing, there was no doubt that, simply by design, the Hatching Sands were ideal. "I could probably ask," agreed Layla, eyes on her instrument. She tested another string, and then looked up to Marcius with a smile. "But I'd rather not trouble them." She shrugged. "I can wait. And in the meantime, I can make due."

It was only as he said the words that the thought of even meeting with Vaioa's Masterharper crossed her mind. "I haven't!" said the redhead. "It would probably be a good idea to meet with him, wouldn't it? Even if I'm not exactly continuing my studies, officially, at this time."

And as he introduced himself, Layla's somewhat shocked smile widened. She'd been speaking to the Masterweaver this whole time! "Oh!" she said. "It's a pleasure to meet you, sir!" And she took the offered hand, giving it a gentle shake. "My name is Layla. I'm a candidate. Though-" After releasing her grip, she pointed at her knots and gave a laugh. "-you probably already know that."

Marc nodded when the girl opted to wait- that was perfectly fair. Goodness knows he could never bring himself to inconvenience a dragonrider for even a moment for something regarding to his own craft."The pleasure's mine, Layla." the tall crafter was quick to assure with a friendly grin. "And less of the 'sir'- don't need to feel older than I am. Besides, you might be a dragonrider soon, mightn't you? Then the 'sirs' will be for you." He held no illusions about his status- as far as he was concerned, the least and rawest greenrider outranked him, a mastercrafter. After all, as he often joked about, no one ever needed to be saved from the threads he handled on a daily basis; Marc was in the business of preserving people's modesty, not their lives. He chuckled when Layla gestured at her rank knots. "Ah, my instructors back in the Hall would hang me up by my thumbs if I couldn't identify all rank knots with my eyes closed. And they would know if I made a mistake, all the way from the crafthall in Boll, somehow." While, of course, most people could identify knots okay whether or not they were weavercrafters- that was their point, after all, identification- members of his craft were especially expected to be able to identify them at a glance as well as tie them.

"Well, be careful if you decide to practice down here, yeah? The fairs of fire-lizards around here keep the population down, but I swear tunnelsnakes and crawlers just grow out of nothing." he warned, his tone wry. It was an uphill battle to make sure the boxes of supplies for his craft didn't become nesting material for the wretched creatures.

"Well perhaps they can act as audience then!" said Layla. It was posed as a joke with a laugh, but the more the redhead began to think about tunnelsnakes and crawlers popping out of the woodwork and coming closer, encroaching upon her, she cringed. Even if they were only there for good intent - to listen and enjoy - she'd really rather not bare the sight of them. And besides, what if they were only friendly while she played? What if, when she stopped, they would become enraged and give chase to her?

She knew she was over-thinking things, but still, just imagining made her shudder. And she closed her eyes, shaking her head to desperately clear her head of the thoughts. "Speaking to the Masterharper sooner rather than later is sounding better by the moment," admitted Layla with a nervous smile. "Not that I wouldn't wish to speak to him anyway, but perhaps he'll know of some better places for me to practice in my spare time. Places that...perhaps aren't so full of things that skitter and crawl."

Marcius chuckled at the candidate's cheerful suggestion- though despite the fact that it was clearly (???) a jest, the hairs on the back of his neck prickled at the very thought of willingly putting himself anywhere near the haunts of vermin unless he really had to. (Your masterweaver, ladies and gentlefolk; gets anxious about even the prospect of very minor injury). But then again, weyrfolk- even the candidates, who might well not be born weyrfolk- had a great deal more nerve than he (and a good thing, too). Still, it became clear that she didn't actually find the prospect all that appealing, which was a bit of a relief- goodness knows Marc didn't want to be even indirectly responsible for someone getting hurt.

"That's fair." he assured her earnestly. "Though if you feel up to it, I know there's a lot of weyrfolk around that would never say no to being serenaded, even just as a practice audience or what have you. So don't feel restricted to finding unoccupied areas for practice, yeah?" he added, tone encouraging. Not all, certainly- weyr residents were people of varied tastes, like anyone else, but most weyrfolk he'd met appreciated good music, and even an apprentice harper typically sounded fine to him. "Oh, and no matter where you practice, you may attract a flit audience- a lot of them seem to like music, too." He'd caught Shimmy adding his own contributions to singers more than once, much to his chagrin.
