Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Crash Course Guide To Pern; For pern newbies!

Pern is a planet set in a different galaxy far beyond the reaches of the Milky Way. It takes place very far in the future, so far that the residents have completely forgotten about Earth, or Old Terra.

Pern is an agrarian society; most of the people are farmers. The planet is very mineral-poor, so there are not a lot of metals.

In the solar system of Pern, there is a planet, called the Red Star, that has a very erratic orbit, passing far outside of the solar system and into an Oort Cloud (much like the one our own solar system has). When it enters back into the solar system, it brings a trail of debris with it. In this trail of debris are pods filled with a deadly mycorrhiza parasite. Pern passes through this trail of debris, and when these pods enter the planet's atmosphere, they burst open and release the parasite in a deadly silver rain known as Thread.

Thread consumes any organic material within a matter of seconds. Whether plant or animal, living or dead, it absorbs it instantly in an excruciating process called Threadscore. The only ways to kill Thread are to drown it in water, freeze it in cold, or burn it with fire. As a result, when the Threads fall during winter, they freeze and die; when the Threads fall over the ocean, they drown and get eaten by fish; and when Threads fall over land, the dragonriders fly into battle.

When settlers first came to Pern, they noticed an indigenous species, firelizards. These resemble miniature dragons. More importantly, they have a natural mechanism to fight and kill Thread. A genetic engineer manipulated some firelizard eggs and created dragons, firebreathing creatures large enough to fight Thread. However, by this time Thread had decimated their population, and they were forced to flee to the Northern continent. Their access to the South was lost, and eventually, all memory of its existence was forgotten, as was the memory of the advanced scientific technology which had brought them there.

The people carved out homes for themselves in the rocky North. These homes were called Holds. Those who rode dragons found other homes, usually in extinct volcanoes, which were full of plenty of cliffs for their dragons to perch on. These homes were called Weyrs. They used stonecutters to make caves in the volcanic cones so that they could live there comfortably.

You can read more about Pern and Thread here.

Pernese dragons are not like many dragons found within traditional medieval & fantasy lore. In the first place, they cannot breathe fire on command. Instead, they have a second stomach, reserved exclusively for digesting firestone, a phosphorous-containing volcanic rock. Dragons chew this rock and swallow it; in their second stomach, it breaks down into volatile, gaseous compounds. When the dragon belches forth these compounds, they ignite with the oxygen in the air, thus creating flame. Additionally, they have smooth, leathery skin, not skin covered in scales like traditional dragons. Their eyes are rounded and multi-faceted, and they change color depending on the dragon's mood.

Pernese dragons are highly empathetic. The original firelizards were enhanced not only to be larger but also to increase their intelligence and empathy and decrease their memory. The colonists used a fictional chemical, known as metasynth, to accomplish this. As a result, dragons are highly sensitive to other living beings-- specifically, other dragons and humans. Dragons communicate through telepathy, and they must enter someone's mind in order to do so. If you are not accustomed to the feeling of a dragon entering your mind, it can be quite disconcerting. Part of a Weyrling's training is learning to adjust to the feeling of having a dragon in your head at all times. Firelizards remained on Pern as well, and will Impress to anyone smart enough to feed them. The bond between a firelizard and owner is much weaker than that between a dragon and rider, but they are still highly empathetic creatures, albeit nowhere near as intelligent as their larger cousins: they communicate merely through vague pictures or feelings, rather than full thoughts and sentences.

In addition to telepathy, dragons have the power of teleportation-- transporting themselves (and their riders) nearly instantaneously from one location to another. This skill requires a lot of practice and is considerably difficult. When dragons exit one location and enter another, they pass through a realm known as Between. This stands for the area 'between two places.' This realm is a space of pure nothingness; nothing can survive within it, as there is no energy source, and it can only be accessed via dragonback. The temperature is very cold, and trips through Between are freezing for humans; dragons and firelizards have thick enough hide that they are able to tolerate it. Generally, a trip through Between lasts about three seconds. Dragons and humans must hold their breath until they re-emerge. If a rider dies, his dragon automatically commits suicide: he enters Between using the last of his strength, and does not emerge. Dragons cannot survive without their rider. If a dragon dies, his rider will almost always choose to commit suicide as well. If he does live, he will essentially be an empty shell, constantly experiencing trauma/PTSD, and oftentimes nearly vegetative due to the pain of the loss. Female dragonless can lessen the pain of this loss by having children, and men can occasionally do the same. More commonly they can improve with the help of firelizard companions, but even if they do, they will never be the same. A rider who has lost his dragon will never be able to re-Impress to a new dragon.

Dragons are intelligent sentient beings, but compared to humans, they are a bit simplistic. The closest estimation is that they are very childlike. Because they must fly into Threadfall on a regular basis, they were designed to have a poor memory, so that they would be able to forget the horrors they witness and avoid the fear that they would otherwise feel. Most of them do not understand complex human arrangements, such as politics. Sometimes they may have a basic grasp on a concept, such as complex human relationships, or contradictory feelings a human might experience, but not be able to fully understand it. Even so, they are certainly intelligent, capable of independent thought, and regarded highly among Holders and Weyrfolk alike.

  • Hold: A type of fort or cave city where the people of Pern live. These are designed to provide protection from Thread.

  • Weyr: A home for dragons and their riders; usually in a hollowed-out, dead volcano. An uncapitalized W, ie weyr, means one individual cave where a single rider and his dragon live. One Weyr usually contains 200+ weyrs.

  • Thread: A parasite from beyond the solar system, brought into Pern's path of orbit by the Red Star. When it falls through the atmosphere, it becomes a deadly silver filament that rains down on the planet and devours any organic material it touches.
