Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

He should be in bed. In fact, the only reason he wasn't being held in bed by a fussy bronze dragon was that Tytoth was so senseless in the sun, he had no idea his rider had enlisted the aid of a pair of wingriders to help him up to the council room. Ixiara and Nell might disapprove of him cutting off his convalescence prematurely, but his wingriders were a loyal, dependable sort. If he needed help, he could count on them, even if it brought down the wrath of T'ech's fussy weyrmate later on.

It was fortunate that T'ech was an exceedingly small man, built more like your stereotypical greenrider than a bronzerider, and that dragonrider's were a fit lot. The two wingriders had little trouble arranging him onto the green dragon without the Weyrleader's assistance. He grit his teeth against the pain as Ghinath rose toward the council ledge. Every wingbeat sent a jolt of agony up from his legs and hip, as searing as if that wher still had its fangs buried in his body.

He prayed it wouldn't wake his sleeping dragon. There was business to attend to today, hopefully the last such business he'd need to see to for a long while. J'ean was right about him and Talora had been running things on her own the last week and a half and, although she was more than competent, T'ech knew from experience what toll doing the job of two Weyrleaders would take. He couldn't do that to Vaioa again. Or to Talora.

Ixiara and Nell helped him into the council room where Talora seemed both startled and annoyed to see him up and about. As he was eased down into his chair, T'ech let out a soft wheeze of pain and permitted himself a moment of weakness, his head falling to the table and his hands fisting in his pants. Samus and Fardles appeared next to him, scolding him roundly for his disappearance. He could feel Tytoth stirring out in the Weyrbowl.

Best to make this quick and painless.

With all the confidence he'd built over the past five turns of leadership, T'ech raised his head and met the Weyrwoman's eyes. "I'm resigning."

((OOC: I'd like to specify that this takes place a day or two before the hatching and will probably be rumor-status by that point.))

The bronzes here are such pushovers. I remember before, where I'd at least have to glare for a moment until they moved. Cirseth said sleepily, murmuring contentedly at her Rider from where she was sprawled in the sun out on the heights. Here, I just show up and they scatter. So silly.

Talora 'hmm'd, turning over a sheathe of parchment. Developments with Rubikon were troubling, and while it was somewhat frustrating that the dragon that lived in her head didn't seem to grasp the significance of the situation, it was also a sort of relief. She had enough stress to deal with without having to factor in Cirseth's as well.

The pair continued in a stretch of silence, Cirseth comfortable while Talora tried to keep herself from fretting. She'd received the report from that copperrider, A'yar, about what had happened at the Hold, and had checked in on T'ech while he'd been asleep and convalescing. It was an ugly situation. The cease of tithes that they were calling for were worrisome enough on their own, but factoring in the bloody attack...

She frowned. Never in her time had a diplomatic mission gone so horribly wrong.

Talora heard the odd pattern of footsteps before the door was opened. She wasn't sure exactly what she was expecting, but T'ech supported by two wingriders was probably low on the list. As he was lowered into his customary chair, she composed herself, aware that she'd let her face slip and show surprise.

"T'ech, you should still be in the infirmary," she scolded, though her mouth snapped firmly shut when the man made his declaration.

He's what? Cirseth rumbled, picking up on the shock of surprise that had jolted Talora. The gold lifted her head from the ground, turning so that she could look up in the general direction of the Weyr Council room, interest piqued. This man was just full of surprises. First maulings, and now resignations.

"I don't think that I can say that this is unexpected," Talora said slowly, brow furrowing. "Or that it's entirely a bad idea. But your timing is horrible." She set the papers she was holding down on the table, placing a palm over them. "Leaving Vaioa without a Weyrleader while we're still dealing with Rubikon and Warryn is irresponsible."

T'ech was caught in her eyes or he would have let his head fall back to the table. If things had been different, if J'ean hadn't been around...well that wasn't important now. He let out a gusty sigh that surprised him with its intensity. "Not right this very second," he said evenly. Just a few short turns ago his hands would have shook, he wouldn't have been able to meet her gaze head-on. If nothing else, his unwilling position had given him the confidence he'd lacked for so long.

"You cannot deal with this alone, and you can't deny that I am...ill-equipped to help at this point. I suggest we elect a replacement rather than wait for Cirseth to decide."

Where are you?! T'ech winced at the force of his dragon's voice. He was well and truly caught in the act. Tytoth's irritation was a knot in his skull, adding to the tension headache that had begun to build behind his eye. You should be in bed! What's wrong with you? The worry in his dragon's tone took all the sting from his words. He could sense the big bronze's head turn to the council room and feel him seething in frustration.

So many things, buddy. So many.

He hoped Talora would understand that his rueful smile wasn't directed at her. "I cannot fly to meet with the other Weyrleaders as I am, nor with the Lord Holders. If you knew what a production it was just to get out of bed for this long..." He made a helpless gesture. "What would you have me do, Talora? Vaioa needs a fit and able leader to carry her through this trying time. I'm no longer that man."

You were always that man, Tytoth interjected fiercely. T'ech had never loved him more than in that moment. The bronze's unfailing faith in him not only as a person, but as a rider and a leader would never fail to inspire him. Still...he was at the end of his rope here. He wouldn't admit to Talora that the attack had rattled him more than the even that had taken his eye. He'd looked death in the eye and hadn't liked what he saw. To his shame, all he found himself wanting to do was see to his wing and to his weyrmate. Let someone who wanted to handle the big stuff.

"I am open to suggestions. But you have to admit that having a cripple for a Weyrleader isn't doing wonders for morale."

Talora kept her eyes on T'ech's face, gaze steady and face outwardly unruffled. There wasn't anything here worth getting worked up about, she told herself. Weyrleadership changed often anyway, and would have shifted soon enough when Cirseth rose once more. The real issue here was Rubikon, and T'ech's resignation could be taken as a sign of weakness.

Perhaps it was. But again, that didn't matter.

"Morale is its own beast," Talora said after a moment, sitting back and looking at the man before her. He'd sacrificed much for his Weyr. A lifetime, an eye, and now potentially a limb. It seemed that he was done sacrificing. Really, the only thing she could fault him for was his timing.

"I'm not going to try to convince you of anything, T'ech. You wouldn't have bothered to come here and tell me you were resigning if you felt you could be talked out of it. You've served Vaioa admirably, as I'm sure you will continue to do in another capacity."

She took a deep breath, her mind already turning to the logistics of calling a meeting. "How do you suggest we do this? Call in ranking riders and hold a vote? Restrict it to wing leaders only? I'd rather there not be an undue amount of fuss over a temporary position."

Although, to be fair, the position of Weyrleader was always technically temporary, depending on how one looked at it. You could always let me pick, it's worked well for us so far, Cirseth mused.

Unfortunately it takes more than a handsome dragon to lead a Weyr, Talora reminded her. This was a...rare opportunity. Leadership not determined by the outcome of her gold's flight? Her gaze returned to T'ech, calculating.

"Is there someone you would suggest?"

"If I had to choose right now, O'zen and T'ven would be my first choices," T'ech said without hesitation.

There wasn't a person in the Weyr more qualified to take up the mantle than O'zen, and he'd come to respect T'ven as a competent young bronzerider. He wagered there'd be few objections but...

"I would call for a vote of ranking riders; let the Weyr choose who is best for them this time." Rather than a crazed queen in heat, he added silently to himself. Tytoth rumbled irately.

Cirseth had to be at least half a turn away from rising; if they waited around for her to choose, then they'd be waiting a long time indeed. It would be easy for him to simply call O'zen into his office and lay the rank he so desired upon his shoulders but what would the rest of the Weyr think?

We should have just taken the entire wing to Rubikon,Tytoth was muttering to himself.

He could have prevented this entire situation with a show of force that would stopped even the bravest - or stupidest - of whers in their tracks! Reluctantly, he was forced to admit that T'ech was correct in this instance; to remain Weyrleader as he was would be foolish. He could not lead the Weyr in threadfall, he could not get out of bed to meet with the other Weyrleaders. A Weyrleader that could not lead was more a sign of weakness than a resigning one.

And Naelayth and J'ean had worried so much....

"We could be done with all of this in just a day or so. Before the Weyrs convene to discuss the situation."

Talora sat back to consider his recommendations, crossing her arms under her chest and thinning her lips. Whatever decision that ended up being made would need to be made with haste - they didn't have much time before word escaped the Weyr and became common Pernese gossip. She needed to have Vaioa in order before the rest of the scavenging Weyrleaders of Pern swooped down on it.

"I'll call the meeting together," she finally said, eyes snapping to T'ech. "But for now, retire to your weyr, Rider. You've stressed your injuries enough today already."

Talora turned her attention to Ixiara and Nell, nodding to the women to help the bronzerider out of his seat. She had a meeting to arrange and a Weyr to govern, and less time than she would have liked.
