Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Weyrling Lesson: The Final Word; Fluorite Class

Tyr’velas peered down at the wax tablet, eyes narrowing in on a few names. Despite his best attempts to get the entire class up to speed he couldn’t be pleased with all the weyrlings. A few would be transferred if he could make them look good enough for other weyrs. With T’ech’s cooperation it shouldn’t be too difficult, and it would keep Vaioa safer. He hesitated a moment as his eyes drew near the end of the list. He knew she had been practicing, doing her utmost to spite him and make it into one of those infernal wings, but he had hoped…his breath came with a near hiss, eyes flaring wide. She’ll be the death of me Rhaeth.

I have seen them fly. They will do well.

The copperrider’s brow furrowed, he didn’t care what the attitude of the dragons and weyr were becoming. He still thought Flint and Coal a horrible idea. Watching some of the weyrlings doing their best to get into them made his stomach turn. Especially when one such greenrider happened to be his niece. I would have kept the other out as well. Good riders like that are needed in proper wings, a waste putting these two there.

Rhaeth snorted outside near the cavern’s entrance, shifting and finding a more comfortable position in the sand. He closed his eyes, mind already resting. This lesson did not concern him in the least. Now that he wasn’t apart of wing leadership he could care less where these young ones went. His job would be done once they graduated, he had new young dragons to worry about teaching. Why Tyr had to have opinions over the wingleader’s decisions seemed silly to him.

But the weyrlingmaster continued to look over the list. At least the queens’ lessons had been going well. They would be a good addition to Amber. Only one for his current wing it looked like. He had worried about that one at first, but her dragon was capable and she had grown much. He would have preferred the copper but he knew T’ech had a right there since he had only one in his wing. Tyr’velas crossed his arms, overall it seemed like good decisions. The wingleaders knew what they were doing and had done well.

Hearing footsteps in the hall he moved the wax tablet, turning it towards the edge of the table and in full view of any that might enter. Best they know their assignments so they could get any questions out of the way. As a few of the weyrlings began to stream in Tyr’velas cleared his throat, “Your wing assignments have been finalized. I know all of you have been practicing, but starting now until your graduation you will be practicing exclusively with your wing. If you have any questions or concerns feel free to voice them now.”

Amarind was one of the first to arrive, eager to see what the future held for her after her little chat with Adelith earlier. Graduation was so close, she could taste it--and she had to know what lesson was happening now, what hurdle she needed to jump before she made it into the wings to really prove herself as a rider. She grinned when she saw Tyr'velas and the wax tablet--and she knew exactly what it meant before the words ever left his mouth.

What is it? Are we to be flying or flaming or something else? Adelith asked, shifting impatiently outside as she felt the anticipation rolling off her rider.

None of the above, Amarind replied mentally, still grinning as she slowly moved over to get a look at the tablet. She scanned through a few of the names--obvious choices, most of them; Rhias and Aniese would be in Amber, naturally, since they flew Queens, but...

Ah. And there it was. She let out a laugh when she saw her name with "Flint" inscribed next to it before letting out a sharp whoop of glee when she saw that Rennavi and Hollinth would be coming with them, after all. At least she wouldn't be completely alone out there--and Adelith and Hollinth got along brilliantly!

Flint! We're in Flint! We're going to be training with them and flying with them--we're going to be real riders, Addie! The girl exclaimed through the bond she shared with her dragon, beaming when she heard a short little bugle of excitement from outside. Slowly, she moved aside to let the others look at the tablet as she focused her attention on Tyr'velas.

"So these new wings--they work differently from the regular ones, right? Faster, harder? What all do they do different? Aw, shards, I'm so excited--we're gonna be real riders!"

Instantly, she cast a glance around for Rennavi and Aniese and Rhias--she didn't want to be rude right after asking a handful of questions, but she was eager to see her friends and share in her jubilation.

T'muz stood in the back of the room after his customary salute, waiting for the crowd around the table to disperse a bit. Yes into was an excited presence in the back of his mind, but the young man didn't share his blue's enthusiasm. Graduation and thread fighting loomed over his head like a storm cloud. He thought he and Ysinth were ready but he still had his misgivings.

He waited for Tyr'velas to answer Amarind's questions, then voiced one of his own as he inched near the table. "We don't fight thread until we graduate, right? So when our wings go out, do we do anything? Or do we just keep helping out here like we always have?" He craned his neck and looked at the tablet as he added, "I mean, do we just drill with them or do we face Thread with them?"

"Don't be a sourface, this is exciting!" Gwen admonished as she left their weyr, a hopskip in her step all the way to her lesson. My face can be whatever I want it to be! And if you say so. It will be the same wherever we go. I will flame all the thread and other dragons will be jealous of me.

Well. At least Eamith's ego hadn't suffered from her early incompetence.

She kept that little tidbit to herself as she arrived, parking herself near the desk immediately, waiting her turn to be able to peruse the wax tablet that their Weyrlingmaster had extended to them. Gwen dipped politely in greeting, uttering a quiet, but cheerful, "Good morning, Weyrlingmaster!"

Once Amarind had moved, Gwen ducked in beside her, eager to see where she'd been placed. Eamith had grown into a fine and large brown, sturdy and muscley and everything a big brave dragon should be. As her eyes scanned the list, however, her smile faltered. She...she and Eamith were the only ones going into Sandstone?

They were going to be the only weyrlings from her class graduating into that wing, which meant they'd be on their own until she managed to make friends with the other riders. She darted a nervous look to her peers, biting a little on her lower lip.

It is obvious, Gwen. I was the only dragon good enough to fly in that wing. Rhaeth is in that wing, and he is a good flier. So that means I am a good flier.

Gwen wasn't sure she had the confidence at the moment to stem any bit of that ego, so instead she turned back to Tyr'velas once more, bobbing again in an unsure kind of bow. "Uhm, I don't have any questions, sir, but I look forward to flying with you in Sandstone!"

There's the sunshine, Eamith crooned. That's my girl.

Well?

Jus’ give me a moment En, there’s somebody else in front of me.

Well then push them aside this is important Jyadi.

Jyadi aimed an indistinct frown at the space between Gwen’s shoulderblades, a mild reproof resonating back to the beryllium coiled on their weyrledge. Endoth curled tighter, hissing unhappily to himself as he suffered the wait in line. Why wouldn’t she take initiative, this was a critical moment!

Jyadi bore no mark of her partner’s ill-tempered impatience, grinning at Gwen as the brown rider stepped forward to curtsey and offer words to Tyr. Sneaking a peek at the list of names, Jyadi browsed over hers in favor of Gwen’s. “Nice goin’ Gwen! Yer gonna do great.” She would have clapped the other woman on the shoulder in a friendly show of solidarity but the look on Gwen’s face had Jyadi holding back, busying herself instead with picking out her name from the list.

Oh! An expression of delighted surprise stole over her own scar-pocked face, alerting Endoth before anything more could be said.

Well what is it? Don’t leave me hanging, where are we?

Buying time to recompose her face, Jyadi side-stepped to allow the next hopeful a look into their future. Grinning slyly, she blurted her response aloud as she answered her copper’s demand.

”We’re in Amber!”

WHAT?!

Endoth’s mental shriek found purchase on the wind, too uproarious to be contained in the panicked maelstrom of Endoth’s thoughts. Amber? AMBER? That was the queens’ wing that was where REZEIRTH WAS--

Jyadi guffawed, a riotous laughter that was followed by tears of mirth as she struggled to get her voice back under control. Granite! We’re in Granite! She rasped a gleeful “Granite” as she wiped away the moisture trickling down her cheeks and blurring her eyes. The sharding Weyrleader’s wing, they’d done it.

That’s Tytoth’s wing En! She didn’t know if Endoth knew the man’s name but his gold-siring bronze was an easy connection to make.

Yes yes, T’ech’s bronze I know. Surly for having been duped, Endoth made an outward effort to give Jyadi’s delight the cold shoulder. He could not help but posture a bit however, head tilted smugly back and wings re-draped to their most regal affectation. Of course they were they were the best. He’d known it all along.

You are walking for the next week. She wasn’t getting away with that horrid little joke of hers, either. And you’d better oil me every night. He was not above jostling her in her harness, not in the least bit.

Jyadi pulled a face, shoulders rolling in good natured surrender to her fate. Yes sirrah. The lord required placating, she could do placating.

I don’t see what the big deal is, Rezeirth grumbled. We already know what wing we’ll be in. Oceth and Bresaith’s wing. Cirseth’s wing. To Rezeirth, the pattern was very simple. All Golds went into Amber. Why should she be any different?

I know. You’re right. Aniese fully expected to be put into Amber. But there was some small part of her that was nervous about the outcome. What if she somehow got put somewhere else? She knew it didn’t really happen, but… anything was possible. What if she was intended for one of the high-altitude wings? She felt a sudden churn of fear in her stomach. They would have no hope there. Rezeirth was nowhere near fast enough, with her expansive bulk; and an agenothree tank could not compete with the levels of Thread they would encounter up there.

Rezeirth, sensing real fear in her rider, softened. Golds don’t get put up there. It simply isn’t done.

Logically Aniese knew this to be true, and she didn’t actually believe she might be placed elsewhere… for the most part. But there was a tiny sliver of doubt that she couldn’t completely banish…

The council room was already part full. Aniese dipped into a nod and curtsy before Tyr’velas and moved back to the table, mindful of his peculiarities when it came to manners. He was a reasonable teacher, but if she was being honest with herself, she wouldn’t be sad to move on. His attitude was negative and made her feel stifled and ashamed. She had understood the importance of manners when she lived at Big Bay, but… she’d quickly learned that things were done differently here. And for good reason. Weyrlife was much more focused on survival in the face of danger. Manners simply inhibited social closeness. But then again, she wasn’t one to complain about someone else’s idiosyncrasies.

Nervously she edged closer after Tyr spoke, and her eyes darted down to the tablet. She was still a couple of seats away, but she could read the tablet, at an angle—Amber. She sighed heavily, smiled sheepishly to herself, and whispered to Rezeirth that yes, she had been right after all, and she was sorry for worrying.

Jyadi’s words made her do a double-take and she looked first at her friend and then back at the tablet in confusion. Just as the copperrider corrected herself, Aniese’s eyes landed on the word, ‘Granite.’

She edged away and shot Jyadi a look of confusion. “Amber?” She muttered. Then, picking up on the figure next to her, Aniese turned to see Gwen hovering, apparently anxious about the wing placements. She hip-checked the brownrider and offered her a grin. “Hey! Congratulations on your placement! Sandstone is meant to be pretty good. Their wingsecond rides the largest Bronze in the Weyr!”

Rennavi tag Amarind -will have tyr soon as well-

Rennavi stripped the cap from her head, pieces of her hair flying free despite being tied back. She grinned and peeled off her gloves, stuffing them into the cap as she moved to hold it beneath her arm. Hollinth wiggled behind her, head moving down and then up as she tried to peer into the entrance and over her rider’s head at the same time. The two never had to be told to practice on their own time, and even now Rennavi was freshly windswept. The real trick for them had been staying fresh for drills. Sitting still just didn’t seem to work.

Hurry the others are already in there! I want to know who we’ll be flying with, it is very important. See what the others can get if you can, I would like to know about Endoth, and Eamith, also Adelith!

Rennavi let the green keep talking, she gave a wave to the rambunctious young dragon and headed towards the weyr council room. Hollinth’s words still rambling on in her head as the green had something to say about each and every one of her classmates.

Am I going to have to read the entire list to you? Rennavi strode into the bustling room, edging her way past a few that stood still. Already they were chattering, and Tyr’velas didn’t seem to have much to say today.

Yes! Except for Rezeirth and Melacyth, you said they will be Amber right? I have not seen either of them flame. Are you sure golds can’t flame? That seems silly.

Rennavi reached out to respond to the green, but a sharp woop from Amarind made her turn her head. A grin broke on her face, that could only mean one thing. Rennavi couldn’t wait longer, and edged up towards Aniese, “Excuse me just a sec’.” She peered around the goldrider, eyes scouring the wax tablet, she knew where her name would be, never changed position. Thank faranth Tyr made me learn to read if only for this.

There, her name, Rennavi green Hollinth and Flint. Her victory cheer echoed Amarind’s own, and she couldn’t help but see where her friend had ended up as well. Flint again! Rennavi laughed, arm swinging up to sling over Amarind’s shoulders. Ignoring the fact that her fellow greenrider had been trying to get some answers from Tyr. “Real riders indeed!” She couldn’t stop smiling, her face jubilant even as Tyr’velas sent a dark glare her way. He had tried to talk her out of trying to join those wings, but there was no way she would be missing out on this.

“We’re flying together too, fantastic! Wonder what it’ll be like…”

Thunder
Wingsecond
Hurrry it up! Dylath's voice urged him to hurry for a glimpse at the list. She wanted to know now and D'von was moving much too slowly for her taste. Calm down, Dy. Everyone else is just as excited as you to see where they're going. It's polite to at least wait. His lips tugged into a small smirk. D'von was enjoying getting the chance to push his green's buttons. Usually it was the other way around but he took his time to enjoy the moments he got to have. Feeling her snort, the smirk turned into a full blown grin. Oh yes, it was quite enjoyable.

Not that his own curiousness wasn't making him want to bounce around as he waited. The idea that soon they'd be going out and doing drills with their new wing had him almost as excited as Dylath. Soon they were going to be real riders! Fighting against Thread. A hand reached up to shove his hair back from his face. Calm down, D'von. Sarcasm was obvious in the sweet voice as the green echoed his words back at him. Chuckling, he gave her that one.

Amarind let out a whoop and he returned his attention back to his classmates, raising an brow at his fellow greenrider. Apparently she was quite happy with wherever she'd been placed. New wings? His eyes widened slightly. She got put in one of the new wings? Shards, no wonder she was so excited! Listening to her questions, he couldn't help but nod a bit in agreement. Those were questions he had wondered about as well. Just what did they do in those wings that made them so unique. Besides the fact that only blue and greens were in them. T'muz offered up more questions but D'von was trying not to appear too eager to see his name.

Gwen was next, though she seemed to falter slightly when she saw where she'd be going. Ah, apparently she'd be going into the same wing as Tyr'velas. D'von winced slightly. He wasn't sure he'd be excited about getting into that wing. Jyadi took a look and said something outloud, he wasn't really listening, ot until she burst out into laughter. That had him raising an eyebrow. Probably teasing Endoth from the sound of it. The green was extremely amused by this. He still had a stick up his tailfork according to her.

His eyes caught Aniese slowly edging forward but he didn't really pay much attention to her. It was obvious where she would be placed, that would never change. Rennavi was the next to look and after that he just couldn't put it off anymore. Dylath's impatience was getting to him and he just wanted to know where they were going. He moved around the others until he could get a clear look and let his eyes trail down the names until the landed on his. Shale. Shale? Really? I'd been hoping maybe we'd get into one of the new wings. She seemed a bit disappointed but D'von just grinned. It was one of the higher wings which meant they'd most likely be seeing a lot of action.

'Don't worry, Dy. We'll still be seeing plenty of Thread!' Hmm, but it didn't look like any of the others would be going into the wing with him though. They were going to be around people they didn't know. Oh well. They'd just have to try and get to know their wingmates. It will be fine. Once they see how well we fly they'll know we belong. Well he hadn't been worried about that. Moving out of the way as he listened to Dylath's excited chatter, he let his eyes glance at his classmates while trying to think of any questions he might have.

Tyr’velas – tag Amarind, T’muz, Gwen

Tyr’velas watched in silence as the weyrlings bustled around and read the listing. The smallest of sighs escaped him as Amarind’s laugh grated at his ears. ‘Flint’ for that one, he had hoped she might go somewhere useful so her talents wouldn’t be wasted. Of course she wanted to go fly off into sure death like Rennavi. The hum of his own thoughts almost deafened him to her questions. Blinking, arms crossed, he peered down at the greenrider. Brow rising ever so slightly. He noticed that Rennavi had finally arrived, her jubilant cheer over the news making his teeth grind. He cleared his throat, obviously ignoring his niece as he focused on Amarind.

“They are much different yes. Beyond that I do not know. I believe Sabine and R’kor plan to meet with you both soon. I suggest you ask them.”

Difficult to hide the disdain in his tone, but he kept polite at least. From what he knew some of the Flint leaders meant to meet with their new riders soon. Faranth it was becoming some kind of club already. Such division couldn’t possible serve them well in threadfall. Thankfully another set of questions had drawn his attention. He hadn’t known about this boy, couldn’t decide if he would be better off transferred due to the…circumstances, but T’muz had been doing well.

“That will be decided by your wingleaders. After drills if they believe you are fit to fight instead of simply ferrying firestone most of you will begin flaming thread before graduation. In my opinion you are ready T’muz, you would not be graduating had I thought differently. You will face it with them though, your wing will keep you safe.”

Tyr’velas swung his attention away as Gwen kind of, bobbed before him. Strange, but at least she was polite. He nodded at her words, eyes amused. Aniese spoke true at least, and Tyr’velas did not think ill of the new wingsecond. Couldn’t really after the young man had helped save him during that attack, though touting ‘biggest bronze’ as some kind of accomplishment grated on him.

That’s just because it’s a title you can never claim.

He chose to ignore the copper, instead talking to Gwen, “Yes if you have any questions I know T’ven always keeps his door open. He would be happy to meet with you to introduce some of the wingriders as you are the only one from your class headed there.” Shouldn’t have to worry about her getting threadscored, that bronzerider tried to protect all of bloody Sandstone.

Tag Rennavi/Hollinth

Amarind beamed when Rennavi slung an arm around her shoulders, her grin going from 'glowbasket' to 'fiery intensity of a thousand suns' in approximately half a second. She returned the gesture eagerly, giving the other girl a firm shake of camaraderie, before letting out another laugh.

"Flying together! More like you'll be flying circles around me on that Hollinth," she barked, her smile only widening. "Shards, it's gonna be the best Wing. Thread better watch out for us--we'll have it wiped out in half a Turn! Just put us up there and let us at it!"

Some of the others didn't seem quite as enthused--Tyr'velas, especially, seemed rather annoyed that she had been placed into Flint. She had heard that some of the Weyrpeople disapproved of the new wings--whether it was out of jealousy or fear, she wasn't quite sure--but she had never let that dampen her desire to be a part of them ever since she had Impressed her lovely green belle.

Ah, I must find Hollinth and tell her we will be flying friends! She will be so excited, I think--and I am excited, as well! When do we begin? Oh, Hollinth will have to teach me all she knows about flying fast--I do believe I must get faster if I am to keep up with her, Adelith babbled happily, hopping from her ledge to go and find her darker sister with glee.

Amarind laughed again, grinning at Rennavi.

"You hear that? Our Wingleaders--ours! Can you believe it?--will be talking to us soon. Oh, I hope they're cool! I wonder what it'll be like, really flying drills with real, honest-to-faranth Riders? You think they'll like us?"

The words tumbled out in a buzz, and Amarind could feel herself practically vibrating with excitement and energy. She couldn't wait to get started!
