Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

When T'ech cleared his throat, O'zen straightened in his seat and focused on the Weyrleader in anticipation. His first announcement, however, came as no surprise. R'nault had been involved in leadership since his graduation, advancing from Wingthird to Wingsecond; he'd been groomed to eventually take on a wing of his own. Ry'ker and Tath, O'zen was less familiar with, but he trusted T'ech's judgement.

When T'ech continued, O'zen's sense of anticipation sharpened, and he felt that the Weyrleader was finally moving on to the real reason he'd summoned the council. And though he'd expected some sort of grand announcement--he hadn't seen T'ech look so nervous in a long time--T'ech's proposal shocked him, wiped his mind blank of any quick response and of any feeling other than surprise.

Blue and green wings. O'zen gaped at the thought of it.

Originally, he had intended to throw his support behind T'ech, trusting that whatever decision the man had made was a good one; but instead he held his tongue, too busy grappling with his own conflicting feelings on the matter. How many of his blue and greenriders would he lose?--ah, Al'dai voiced the same concern, and T'ech had an answer prepared. How could such wings last a whole Fall?--but T'ech said there would be two wings, alternating--that made sense.

O'zen thought that T'lsin looked too young and too smug to lead a wing, but then remembered that T'ech had been no older when he became Weyrleader--and that O'zen had no room to talk.

And Ebylin--she was one of his riders. He would regret that loss, but he trusted her wholly.

He was smiling by the time he finally spoke; his eyes glittered with suppressed excitement as he looked between Talora and T'ech. "I like it." He ignored Taiori's protests, said nothing of Tyr's resignation. "Have you two already decided who will be in these wings?"

Tyr’velas

Her groan made his ears burn. But his eyes remained fixated on T’ech. Though he could hear what nonsense she spewed. If she considered the simple outfit he barely managed today ‘frilly’ well then he couldn’t speak for the wellness of her mind. Odd to hear that she agreed with him, vile as her manner might be about it. Tyr’velas had no issue with Ebylin being a woman, he had seen a coperrider woman take charge of a wing before, and he considered his sister a more competent leader than his brother. But yes that second one did seem a child. Foolish to have named these two without consulting anyone.

Tyr inclined his head in Mai’s direction, watching as she snapped to her feet and rounded on Taiori. It seemed he had that in common with the brutish copperrider, it seemed those here didn’t care for her either. Mai’s concern over a new weyrlingmaster did catch Tyr’velas’ attention. Faranth their way of teaching here did seem so lax and infuriating. They barely kept his niece and that brash green of hers in control. His gaze slipped back to his twisted hand, he didn’t trust himself as a wingthird until he could adjust to it. He was too slow, too hampered, couldn’t grip the straps and toss stone at the same time. If he couldn’t perform perfectly as he expected his subordinates he did not trust himself to lead them. These others seemed to care little about that, seeing his resignation as nothing more than a fit. These new wings gave him a good excuse. Let them think he was being childish and pouty, leaving over this foolish idea. Better than to be seen as weak. He blinked, eyes moving up once more, and found T’ech looking back at him now, the knots rolling in the weyrleader’s fingers.

He nodded, chair echoing against the floor. “If you wish. But you have disrespected everyone sitting here by thinking this decision was yours alone to make. Naming mere children and a rider already busy with weyrlings to wingleaders… If you have need of temporary weyrling masters, since Ebylin has abandoned that responsibility you know where my weyr is.” he turned his back, his feet already headed towards where Rhaeth had just landed, he had enough of this, didn’t wish to abide Taiori or T’ech’s presence longer than he needed. “I will stay until my niece graduates, I’ll not have her in this foolish wing of yours, and then see to transferring us both from this place.”

Then he managed to climb up Rhaeth’s side, and the two left together.

They do not seem happy for you, Mine, Halieth murmured, creeling quietly outside on the ledge. T'lsin simply rose an eyebrow at the Council, arms locked loosely behind his back. From where he stood beside Ebylin, showcased to the gathered Riders, he could see every face as they stared at him, judged him, considered his merit.

Most seemed concerned with Ebylin leaving her post. He nearly snorted - as if T'ech would make such a radical move without covering all his tracks and making sure it would go as smoothly as possible. Had they no faith in their Weyrleader? Pitiful. He felt the eyes raking over him, and he gazed levelly back at Taiori, wondering if she was finally done fussing obnoxiously with her riding jacket.

He listened to the fallout with his lips quirked to one side, standing in silent confidence. T'lsin was no idiot - he knew going in to this that there would be backlash and resistance. But he had been handpicked personally for this new venture, and that solid fact alone outweighed any criticism that the Council had to volley at him.

Al'dai did raise a valid point, though, even if T'ech had already taken care of it. Honestly. No faith, no trust, no belief. How did the Council even function if there was this much infighting? He glanced at Ebylin, noting how tense she had become, and purposefully relaxed his shoulders. He wasn't going to look anything but poised and in control in front of those who doubted him.

The mood feels bad in there...

Not all bad, T'lsin told her, nodding minutely at T'ven, and then Mai. He simply stared at Taiori, his upper lip beginning to curl with dislike. Seriously?

When Tyr'velas began his tantrum T'lsin was completely taken aback, his shock and surprise showing plainly on his face. The man stood and threw his wingthird's knots on the table like marks in a betting ring before plopping himself right back into his chair, as if he hadn't just thrown away the only thing that allowed him to be in the room in the first place. It was Taiori's response, however, that finally made T'lsin's nose scrunch in utter distaste, thick brows creasing. 'May be a child'? Yes, well, she very well may be an ass that had wandered in with the wherries, as it were.

Halieth trilled with weak amusement.

But there was that word again - Tyr'velas called him a child, just before he swept himself out of the council room in a grand flounce.

T'lsin had had just about enough.

"Perhaps I may look like a child to some, but at least I do not act like one, projecting my own inadequacy on to others." He said smoothly, shooting a look smoldering with animosity in the direction that the former wingthird had fled. He looked to O'zen then, his face smoothing out into a small smile. Talking about his new promotion was still exciting, and thankfully was enough to cleanse him of the bile he'd been fully prepared to spit had that bitter jealous 'child' kept talking.

"There has been some planning going in to the new wings already, yes," T'lsin said to the bronzerider, glancing briefly at T'ech and Ebylin. "Though nothing is entirely official just yet."

Al'dai gazed with detached interest as T'ven responded. The young bronzerider claimed that the wings had enough blues and greens to spare for new wings, and that might be true, if indeed the younger one had the right assumption. He wanted it from T'ech's mouth directly, that these wings were going to be composed of 'surplus' green and blue riders-- such a terminology left Al'dai with a sour taste at the back of his mouth, not much of a difference between surplus and expendable-- and not their entire population.

Aside from wanting Merilla in his wing, Al'dai would be incredibly angry to have all of the greens and blues stripped from his wing. He had Impressed at Vaioa, he had lived in the area his whole life, but he would transfer Weyrs in a heartbeat if that was T'ech's intention. Stripping the main wings of greens and blues would leave the remaining riders far too vulnerable to be safe. Al'dai would have no part in it. Wings were structured as they were for a reason. And privately, he didn't think that structure needed to be messed with.

He was not blind to the look of contempt Tyr shot at him, but Al'dai was unruffled by the copperrider's assessment of his character. Tyr'velas had a history of measuring others and finding them lacking. It spoke more to Tyr's character than to Al'dai's. Nonetheless Al'dai pursed his lips thoughtfully and watched the dramatics unfold. Though he did not agree with Tyr's methods, he found that he agreed with some of the sentiment. Especially with Tyr's analysis of T'ech's decision. Al'dai privately would have preferred T'ech coming to the council with the idea, rather than deciding between himself and Talora, as he had no doubt he had done, based on the confident glare she was wearing. Yes, it was T'ech's prerogative to make such executive decisions as new wings, but honestly... Did T'ech forget that he had to answer to Council as well? Did he think he had enough popular support to simply do as he wished? In some cases that might be true, but he would lose some of his support if he went too far into taking matters into his own hands. Al'dai was uncomfortable with this amount of independence. He should have come before the council and explained his idea before picking Weyrleaders. Al'dai was sure of it now.

But he was completely floored when Tyr dropped his knots. He stared in utter shock at the copperrider. Tyr was covetous, greedy, spiteful. It was no secret that he was poisonously ambitious. He had tried to gain Weyrleadership on more than one occasion. That he would so freely give up what measure of leadership and rank he did have.... Al'dai was astonished.

And then Taiori had to go and open her hillfolk mouth and just make it worse. Al'dai forced himself to remain still rather than raise his palm to his forehead as he so wanted. He did manage a soft, warning, "Taiori..." Before others interjected.

He exhaled explosively. They had talked about this. And it was ugly for Sandstone. He valued her greatly, but when she went and said things like that... He sighed again. The nice thing about council was that everyone was there for a reason, everyone had a valid opinion, and everyone had a chance to express that opinion. But he was tired of her sexism, he was tired of it. He made eye contact with her and looked away, disappointed. He had his doubts like Tyr, and he had his doubts about T'lsin. But he knew better than to openly comment the way she had just done.

T'ech's response was some relief, even as Tyr took his leave. Al'dai nodded once, curtly. Perhaps the man was not as moronic as Tyr had made him sound, but still this style of doing things did not sit entirely well with Al'dai. Nonetheless he swiveled to face T'lsin and let him speak his piece.

He was growing more and more restless by the minute, more and more unhappy. He would not follow Tyr, of course. Al'dai was nowhere near resigning over this. But at that moment he felt so stifled in the room, so sick of the occasional glance thrown his way and then quickly removed, as if he was being looked at. Even Taiori was grating. Al'dai wanted to leave, to go find Merilla or simply sit alone with Lerouth. But he couldn't, not while there was business left to resolve. He cleared his throat.

"Might I request that we have some input in the planning of these wings? That is to say, which of our wingriders will be transferring?" His gaze lingered briefly on T'lsin before he looked back to T'ech and nodded, distantly, politely.

"And-- not to change the subject, but... while you are thinking about reshuffling wings... My wingthird has been notoriously absent of late and I would like to submit a formal request to have him replaced." Al'dai did not look at Taiori. He had not spoken to her about it and he did not care to, at least not while she was acting like a petulant herder. Had life in the Weyr taught her nothing? She generally repressed her conservative outbursts but he found himself irrationally irritated to hear her self-assured and condescending tone say the word woman. Al'dai had his own subconscious biases but nothing as overt as that. "I'd like that one, actually, if I can submit to your consideration." Al'dai nodded toward T'ven and looked back at T'ech. He knew the Weyrleader might resent a change of subject but it was relevant, especially if Tyr was actually leaving. No time like the present to take care of wing shuffling.

Only a strong desire not to draw attention to himself kept the young Bronzerider from squirming in his seat as Tyr’velas spoke out. His rude question of whether thread had made it's way to T'ech brain had been a shock. R'nault couldn't imagine saying such a thing to anyone, let alone the Weyrleader. He stared at the knots the Copperrider tossed onto the table. It brought a similar shocked stillness that T'ech announcement had. He barely knew the man. What he did know mostly came from talk among other riders and it was rarely flattering. His reaction seemed extreme. He had to know that T'ech would not change his mind simply to keep him as his wingthird.

Taiori's fustrated groan ended the awkward silence. Her words nothing to improve the mood that had descended upon the room. Her words left a bitter taste in his mouth. How she'd gained a position as a Wingsecond with such backward views was shocking. He started out in Sandstone and couldn't believe that Al'dai could think the same. Her words did not just make her look bad, but also the rest of the wing. Ebylin and T'lsin did deserve the treatment they were getting.

Tyr's departure was expected. Of course he couldn't just leave quietly, and continued his criticism's and threats even as he walked away. He threatened to transfer not only himself, but his niece. R'nault wondered if all council meetings were this dramatic.

He had little time to puzzle over all that had happened. Al'dai was refocusing on the original reason for the meeting. R'nault was quite willing to allow any who wished to transfer to the new wings to do so, as long as it wasn't all his Blues and Greens. He refused to acknowledge Krejuth's silent push to offer up Bismuth. He looked up in time to catch Al'dai's nod toward T'ven as he requested a new Wingthird. He would regret loosing the pair, but he'd known this day would be coming sooner rather than later. T'ven and Shalagoth were a hard working and talented pair, and were destine for things beyond just a wingrider. "I can vouch for T'ven and Shalagoth's abilities Weyrleader. I would have seen them promoted myself if I had a position available. They have too much talent and potential to waste as just Wingriders." He paused glancing toward Ebylin and T'lsin. "I'm sure the same of Ebylin and T'lsin."

T'ech exhaled slowly as Tyr left, wishing Talora would speak up to support him. Still, it was over with and the copperrider transferring away would actually be a load off of his mind. Despite them needing every dragon they could get, nothing was worth that level of disrespect and arrogance. He closed his eye for a moment, gathering himself before focusing on Al'dai with a tight-lipped smile.

"If you think I would do something like this without the council's input at all, you don't know me very well," the bronzerider said quietly. "I approached several people to interview for the Wingleader positions and I have a list of people I'd like to see in the new wings, but I didn't intend to just throw them all together and force it upon you. Part of the reason for this council is to discuss who would best be suited for such a wing."

He glanced at Talora and the Weyrwoman nodded at him. Encouraged, his smile softened into something a little more genuine, less strained. "I think T'ven is a wonderful choice," he said to R'nault and Al'dai. "Good head on his shoulders. Capable dragon. " Not an asshole, he thought to himself. Tytoth rumbled in amusement. "Some wing shuffling is definitely in order."

Do you really think he'll take his niece with him?

He's not forcing anyone to go with him. If the girl leaves, she leaves of her own free will.

T'ech felt some of the tension leave his shoulders but they were still tight. He'd have to beg J'ean for a back rub later to relieve some of the stress this day had already accumulated. "Now, we're looking for riders who have shown good attention to detail, and quick reflexes for these wings..."

Al'dai listened to T'ech's response silently. Despite what the Weyrleader said about getting council input, the fact remained that T'ech had hatched this whole idea without any council input (apparently except for Talora, which doesn't count for much in this case, he thought).

Still, as long as Al'dai wasn't going to be stripped of all his green- and blue-riders without warning, he didn't have much to complain about. Privately, he still thought this change in wings was a bit unnecessary, but as long as it didn't increase injuries he didn't see a real reason to oppose it. If he was getting a new wingthird on top of that, he would be appeased.

"I have a few riders fitting that description," he replied, glancing around at his fellow wingleaders to see how they were reacting to T'ech's words. "But I'd like to speak with them first about the matter and make sure they're fine with the idea before submitting them, if that is alright." Al'dai didn't doubt that some of them would be up for it, but he hated to transfer a rider from his wing without explaining the context of such an action. And the last thing he wanted was to breed resentment in his current riders.

O'zen watched Tyr'velas until he was no longer in sight, but whatever thoughts he harbored about the copperrider left no trace in his expression. To be honest, he was surprised that Tyr'velas had resigned--O'zen was not close to him, but he'd always understood Tyr'velas as the ambitious sort--but after the initial shock passed, he was not surprised that the man elected to transfer. Throwing away his position like that, what could he ever hope to gain again? Unless he were to seize Weyrleadership.

Unlikely, O'zen thought, though not entirely impossible. Not that it mattered anymore.

He nodded in response to Tl'sin--his mouth twitched in an only half-successful attempt to repress a smile at the young man's jibe--and nodded again when T'ech reaffirmed what the greenrider had said. He listened while Al'dai spoke, then raised his own voice.

"I request the same," he added--as if T'ech would deny them. O'zen was sure he'd have at least a few eager volunteers. He leaned back in his chair, one hand rubbing at his pointed jaw, musing. He thought of his own Wingthird. "I'd like to do some reshuffling myself."

T’ven tag Al’dai, T’ech

T’ven couldn’t help but edge away from Tyr’velas as silently as he could. One leg nearly off the side of his seat as Taiori began to speak up. His head turned to stare at her bold claim, his mind circling for an answer, but wasn’t she a woman as well? Even then what did that have to do with anything, the dragons did most of the work anyways. His brow furrowed, fingers drumming on the table for a moment. Turned out he didn’t need to speak out against such thought, Mai dealt with the matter quickly and even Taiori’s own wingleader appeared disappointed. At least the rest of the council seemed in agreement over that. T’ven felt close to Ebylin and Mai, they had taught him how to be a proper rider after all, and if Taiori did have something else to say about it he’d make sure to back both the greenriders.

The breath he held left him slowly as T’ech took command once more. He didn’t think he could respond as calmly to Tyr’velas as the weyrleader had been able to. Though now that he thought it over, did that mean he should leave as well? He didn’t hold position after all. Tyr left with a flourish, and T’ven felt an edge of hesitation as he watched the copperrider take off. You stay right there. They would have mentioned it. Shalagoth’s calm voice eased any worry away, T’ven smiled, the mood in his immediate area lightened by Tyr’s absence. He eased more comfortably in his chair, eyes following the flow of conversation.

T’lsin surprised him. Personally didn’t know the greenrider, he had only been a candidate when T’lsin had graduated from weyrlinghood, but that smoldering look sent Tyr’s way caught his notice. T’ven knew all too well about controlling his temper. He trusted T’ech though, T’lsin should be a fine wingleader. T’ven might have done more than spit a nasty comment had the copperrider insulted him to his face so he couldn’t blame the man. He did smile now that Al’dai seemed to be on board. With O’zen, R’nault, and T’ech already in agreement that meant the wingleaders would all be for the idea. The thought of the new wings excited him.

Al’dai changed the subject then, mentioning the shuffle of wings, and then the bronzerider nodded in his direction. Close your mouth, it’s not that shocking. T’ven blinked, wondering if he had heard that correctly. He found himself staring at Al’dai, wingthird? Now? Already? It was only a matter of time. It seems Tyr’velas and the inadequacies of others sped it up. But the rest of the council didn’t seem as surprised, no it they seemed in agreement. R’nault speaking up for him now. T’ven did close his mouth, nodding with thanks to R’nault. His cheeks felt warm at the words, and as T’ech spoke it seemed the decision had practically been made.

Faranth he didn’t think the meeting would end up putting something like that on his shoulders. Don’t worry mine, I know you’ll do well. T’ven bit at his lip, eyes wandering towards Taiori, that would mean she would be his wingsecond. And after that comment of hers…and Al’dai had been the one to nearly kill a candidate. Couldn’t fault him too much on that, T’ven had done the same after all. Seemed he would be in like company in sandstone. T’ven grinned, “It’d be an honor to work with Al’dai and Taiori in Sandstone.”
