Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

By all accounts, thought Aniese grumpily, Winter was already here. Technically the season was late Autumn, as Thread was still falling, but as the goosebumps rose on Aniese's arms and she wished fervently that she had a better coat, one with a fur lining rather than the simple fabric one she owned, Aniese could have sworn that the season had finally changed. It was probably a matter of days until the crackdust fell, anyway.

But that wasn't here yet, and with Threadfall came injuries, and with injuries came numbweed. Every sevenday the Lower Cavern was full to the brim with a fresh batch brewing for the infirmary, but thus far, Aniese had been busy with other chores and duties.

Today, when she'd been assigned to help out, she'd quickly realized why it was such a dull and hideous chore. The acrid fumes of the brewing solution made her eyes water and sting, and soon, set her nose to dripping. Not long after she'd developed a persistent cough. Gloomily suffering through it she'd thought that this was work best suited for drudges, or even candidates. Immediately she had felt guilty. She was here because she was earning her keep. It was her responsibility to help out wherever she could.

But the fumes from brewing numbweed were very irritating, and before long, the Headwoman actually sent her out. Aniese didn't even feel guilt as she headed through the corridors, only relieved at being given another assignment.

The tray in her hands wobbled slightly but Aniese was relatively sure-footed in the corridors of the Weyr that had become familiar. She'd brought lunch to the Records, because, according to the Headwoman, the Weyrfolk who worked there rarely had time to come all the way to the Lower Caverns for meals. Aniese wasn't sure if she believed this, but left the Caverns happily anyway. Already her head was feeling clearer.

She stopped outside of the archives, propped the tray on her hip, and knocked before entering.

B'ran carefully read a new missive from one of Vaioa's tithing holds. Becoming a garnetrider didn't actually change what sort of archives work he had always done, but it did elevate it immensely in importance. Instead of making fresh copies of decaying old records, he was making copies of important documents for the Weyrleaders. This one in particular left a sinking feeling in his stomach. He loved records work, but adding this social element to it was beginning to grate on him. At least everyone the dusty old hides he used to work with didn't matter to anyone living.

Let Talora know the tithe from Rubikon will be delayed by a sevenweek, at least.

I'm sure she'll be satisfied to know things are relatively normal.

We don't want their rocks and weeds anyway.

He pushed the unrolled message aside on his desk and prepared a blank hide roll when the knock caught his attention. With a huff, he stood and swept his clothes free of any loose sand. Hidework wasn't exactly clean. B'ran promptly strode to the door and opened it.

A woman? She was around his age, and certainly not unattractive, although he wouldn't peg her for beautiful. Still, it didn't matter. Here she was, right at his door, and this opportunity was just too good to pass up. Desk sex was always top notch. A gleeful smirk lit B'ran's face as he locked eyes with Aniese.

"Hey, sweetheart. You here for a hide or a ride?" purred B'ran, with a wink and a pat of his groin.

Now I understand why you mostly bed men.

Shush.

Aniese was expecting some humbacked old crone or wheezing old man with poor eyes, not tall and fashionably dressed boy younger than she was and wearing a knot with a thread of crimson woven through it. Her shocked quickly disappeared, though, as he winked at her and spoke.

Shells and shards! Her mouth fell open in shock and she blinked at him stupidly for a few seconds. He hadn't really said that to her, had he?

Yes, yes he had.

Since coming to the Weyr, Aniese had been treated fairly. Not pampered and put on some pedestal, but respected, as if she had the right to be treated like a human being. Certainly, none of the brazen sexual advances she had been warned about had ever happened.

Well, until now, anyway.

Aniese wasn't sure what to say. She was hugely outranked by this rider, and yet, Rayna had said she wasn't obligated to do anything she didn't want to, especially not sleeping with riders... And hadn't Rhias told her the same thing? It made her angry just thinking about it. Some young, puffed-up boy pretending to be a grown rider and using his rank to pressure Lower Cavern women into things they didn't want. And just a few months ago, it might have worked on her, too.

Before she really knew what she was doing, she upended her tray over his head, spilling the stew all over his vapidly fashionable ensemble.

"I was bringing you lunch and help, but you're on your own!" She said angrily, though her voice was slightly tremulous. She hoped she wouldn't be in trouble. She knew he outranked her and could probably get her in big trouble.
