Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

WTF AM I DOING
"Faranth! Stop it! You're acting like somebody's canine, and an inbred one to boot!"

Nuh-uh! I'm a dragon! Did you forget my name again? You say Faranth a lot! It's Iyrith silly! Eer-eeeeh-th! her dragonet corrected. Ulrece wasn't half as entertained as the gold-marked grey seemed to be, but Iyrith seemed hardly phased by her bonded's scowl. To Iyrith, this was a normal human expression.
It was late morning, early afternoon. Ulrece had skipped her own breakfast when Iyrith had taken too long to consume her own, and this was starting to become a regular morning battle in the past sevendays. The baby grey had since discovered she liked sucking the blood out of the meat Ulrece jammed in her mouth, but then when it was dry, she didn't want it anymore. She would spit it out. Ulrece however, against fun as she was, wouldn't let her play until she'd eaten everything she'd discarded.

"I'm not questioning what you are, I'm saying what you are acting like."

Ulrece sat on her own to eat her lunch, quite removed from foot traffic and full tables, but that didn't convince Iyrith to stay put. That only meant there was more out of reach she couldn't see. Being in the corner of the dining hall watching Ulrece eat bland veggie food was boring. Ulrece had tried to catch Iyrith before she bolted off away from the table, but she lunged too late. Iyrith proceeded to gurgle and rumble, head bumping and greeting anyone who came into the dining hall at this hour. She was forgetting names as fast as she was learning them, but she tried anyway. She bounded from table to table, exclaiming how beautiful someone looked today, or how they'd picked out a good meal, even if she didn't know what it was. Iyrith then stopped at a particular table and flared out her little wings, pointing out the yellow spots in them, which turned into her forgetting that she was trying to introduce herself.
She instead craned her neck as best she could and started seriously counting them mid-conversation, and the dragonet hadn't yet told her feet to stop walking. Sitting down might be the best course of action, but it seemed to be one of those moments the child had quite forgotten she could tell her feet what to do in the first place.

Her body bumped into tables and chairs, the force of which unchecked as she simply readjusted her direction slightly and went off from that. Had she knocked any of them down, not even the cacophony of gasps or fallen bowls or angry human noises would alert her.

Twenty nine...ugh...twenty nine...what is...UGH. GRR. One. Two...three...

She was on count 29. She was unsure of the term that came after twenty-nine, so she started back down at one. She would simply make several sets of twenty-nine, and she could accept that. As it was, she may not even remember the number in a few minutes, and would merrily make something up.

Ulrece often found herself as time went on, trying to allow for Iyrith to wear herself out rather than chase her down in these kinds of situations. Unfortunately Iyrith's lack of coordination and the sounds of crashing cups, plates, and/or people was making it very hard for Ulrece to not pay attention. Several times she brought a biscuit to her lips, only to put it down again without biting it.

Defeated, she had enough presence of mind at least to move the plate of food before banging her head softly into the tabletop repeatedly. When she did stop, she tucked her head into her arms and refused to look up.
She could name dozens of greyriders that had better luck than she did right now, bonded to much more graceful beasts. She was since convinced Iyrith would molt somehow in the following months to reveal something a lot more emerald in color.

With his wounds finally starting to heal over, it was nice for V'nan to finally get back into his normal schedule. That also included not eating over at the Infirmary anymore. Faranth bless X'hic, Ashtar, and their healers, but they really should reconsider some of the people they put to work for making the daily meals in the patients ward. He wasn't sure he'd be able to look at a tuber the same way again. Jarvis decided to join him tonight, if to provide some company than staying in the weyr and bore herself to death.

Oh stop complaining you. Sometimes I think you treat yourself like the Weyrleader here. At least you didn't have to eat out of a bucket. Caith had also seen to returning to their weyr about two or so days before V'nan left, happy to finally have fresh meat under his claws and in his stomach. Fresh scars ran across his back and around his wings that wouldn't fully heal, but thankfully his sails were okay and he could take to the skies once more. The beryllium wasn't sure how he would have felt to stay grounded the rest of his life.

Never would have thought so otherwise. You're a tough biscuit for someone gettting on in his turns, V'nan joked. Like you're one to talk, mister '42 turns and yet I act like I'm 16'.

The aromas from the kitchens called to the copperrider, and he waltzed in without a moment's hesitation. Of course, he never anticipated seeing this.

A grey body weaving in and around tables with all the contained excitement of a small child at a Gather stopped him in his tracks. "Did I miss something by chance?" Chirps and other various sounds came from the small dragonet in her search for whatever it was, pausing and greeting anyone that came in her path. The weyrfolk could say otherwise for her behavior, though.

That's the one grey weyrling from Calcite, isn't it? Caith questioned after looking through V'nan's eyes, interest now piqued. An excitable creature, is she not?

"Quite," V'nan chuckled. Careful to avoid flailing limbs flying in his direction, he knelt beside the little grey, Jarvis eying Iyrith down with an air of fascination. "Someone's in a good mood today. But don't you think playing outside would be better? I have a friend who could use a playmate instead of this stuffy old place with all these stuffy old people." Oh don't you dare drag me into this. Smirking, V'nan continued, "Where's your rider by chance, if I may so ask?"

WTF AM I DOING
Iyrith found herself suddenly distracted by the man that came to her level, and she let out a surprised but merry trill. She turned her body around, which involved butt bumping several chairs out of her way, to properly interact with him. The number or that she was counting her wing spots was entirely forgotten, and she snuffled wetly all over V'nan's face in greeting.

Hi. I like you! You smell good! her projected compliment would go to V'nan a bit 'louder' than he expected, and the little grey tilted her head as she listened to him. She did not need to weigh and consider an invite to play!
Outside is better! It is, it is! Where is your friend? WHERE? EEE! I CAN PLAY. I WANT TO PLAY! she rumbled out of unbridled excitement, bounced in place. She had nearly forgotten to tell V'nan where Ulrece was. She stopped abruptly, sat up on her back feet and craned her neck to look all around the dining hall.

There! Mine is in the corner there! Ulrece likes corners of places! We go to that corner a lot. WHERE is your friend?!

Ulrece had looked up with quite the tired expression on her face right at the moment Iyrith had looked for her, and immediately the woman ducked her head down again.

WHO are you directing towards me?!

A man! He smells good. Iyrith answered, and she gave V'nan's face an affectionate lick. He tells me there's a friend I can play with.

If it were anyone else but V'nan, having dragon breath might have been less appealing when it was near your face. But he had dealt with Caith's bad breath on a daily basis as a weyrling himself, so it was nothing new to him. You obviously haven't smelled yourself in the mornings then, have you?

Well this little lady seems to think otherwise, V'nan countered in amusement. "Well, why don't you have me meet your rider first and then we can all go outside. How does that sound?"

The grey didn't even need to think twice as she bounded up on her hind legs and whipped her head around the dining hall, stopping soon at the far corner of the dining hall. "Not a people person then, is she?" Wait a minute... Narrowing his eyes, V'nan soon recognized the bushel of copper hair as the woman from the infirmary. The one who had helped taken care of his wounds. How ironic.

Judging from the expression on her face, however, she wasn't one for company. Time to change that.

"Thank you much, dear," he said, laughing and petting Iyrith's head affectionately as she gave a messy but adoring lick. "My friend's outside, so you can go meet him if you want!" What did I tell you about - ? Oh stop being a spoiled sport and have some fun for once. It'll be good for your muscles, anyway, with the energy she has. X'hic said you'll need all the exercise you can get.

Realizing there was no way around it (that and V'nan's logic was reasonable, as much as the beryllium didn't want to admit it), Caith ambled down to the entrance of the Dining Hall, head soon peeking into the doorway. Come outside if you want to play. No use bothering the others when they don't want to be bothered.

"My, my. Seems like we just keep meeting up with each other, don't we?" V'nan asked, taking a seat next to Ulrece and grabbing the pitcher of water along with a goblet. No alcohol until the wounds are healed, Ashtar's voice rang in his head. "We never did get to properly introduce ourselves, seeing as I was... preoccupied with other things. V'nan." He held a hand out to the grey weyrling. "And from what your dragon has told me, your name's Ulrece?"

Bothered? Iyrith trilled and threw her head back in a sort of dramatic scoff at Caith. No people say they are bothered! EVERYBODY says hi! BUT. Oh, I do wanna play! The man said I could! You HAVE to play!

Her body bounced with joy as she pranced in Caith's direction, hardly aware of the people she stomped passed. A big, adult dragon invited her to games, and Iyrith could not be more delighted. How special she felt!

PLAY. PLAYPLAYPLAY. She demanded and attempted to headbutt him in any place she could. She snapped at the air in front of his feet and hopped side to side just out of his range. Iyrith would egg him into a wrestle now if she could, despite the distinct size difference between them. She didn't much care if they were outside yet, and would likely follow him out quite by accident. She was either bold or stupid to challenge a copper, and both were likely true.

Ulrece? Ulrece, be good. I'mma go outside. You play too?!

Play...? What, I--yes, darling. Ulrece did not bother to even try to explain to Iyrith that she didn't 'play' as dragons did. She had conversations with people, yes. She wouldn't bite at V'nan's feet or play tag at any point in conversation.
...ever.

Shoo, go have fun.

Okieokie.

The company came unexpectedly for Ulrece, and she mentally cursed. She liked to be prepared for social interaction, however, since she'd bonded with Iyrith the grey dragonet had thrown her into many situations she rarely had a spare moment to prepare for. Ulrece silently hoped she appeared well-kept enough as she took V'nan's hand in greeting. She straightened her posture. Her smile was friendly, but business-like. It was the look of a woman who felt as if she had already seen a full day, strained and kept together by sheer willpower. Any lesser rider would be exhausted upon merely waking up with Iyrith.

"Ah, hm, yes. Iyrith does introduce me to everyone." she responded, her tone fairly neutral, neither pleased nor disappointed with her dragon. Ulrece adapted slowly to Iyrith's nature, but she did accept it. Her eye contact with V'nan only lasted as long as their curt handshake, and she cleared her throat.

"You are taking it easy, aren't you, V'nan?" she queried sternly, one eyebrow raised at him. The look was almost accusatory, as if she expected a negative answer and wanted better than that. "I have little interest in hearing you've agitated what's been on the mend."

Caith couldn't help the draconic chuckles that issued forth when Iyrith came out from hiding and out towards his direction. Immediately the smaller grey went into her definition of play, snapping at his feet and jumping out of his reach at the last second. Careful or I just might accidentally step on you! Not that the beryllium would ever want to cause harm to her to begin with, but with someone as much spunk (and perhaps less common sense) as Iyrith had, he didn't want to take any risks.

Hope you aren't afraid of heights! Right as he said this Caith's tail swooped out from beside the youngling grey and under her belly, lifting her off from the ground and up into the air. Carefully but playfully his tail bobbed up and down, letting Iyrith cling to his hide as she was see-sawed through the air. But you're tough. This should be more fun for you anyway.

Inside the Dining Hall, V'nan cocked his head in curiosity to the woman's professional demeanor. For someone so young she sure liked to keep these abrupt and to the point. Ah well, the copperrider dealt with people like her in the past. "That shouldn't be too much a problem though, would it? It's good to see your Iyrith happy and healthy. Eager to learn too from what I've seen. She'll be a good addition to the wings once you've both finished training. Kinda reminds me a bit of Caith during what I like to call his 'pre-pubescent' turns."

He's lying, the beryllium said to Ulrece. If anything he was the so-called teen and I had to take care of him. "Yeah, way to keep up my image there, you big lug."

At Ulrece's question V'nan laughed and waved it off. "Sweetheart I'm made of tougher stuff than that! The day Thread takes me down from the sky is the day I become Weyrleader. Believe me, the job's not as appealing as it sounds." Chugging down the last of his water, he gave her one of his charming smirks. "Have a little more faith in me."

If you had more motivation and less waywardness we would be good Weyrleaders, Caith grumbled. Gently he settled Iyrith back to the ground, feeling his muscles start to become sore. Maybe we should play something else...

"Anyway enough about me and my problems. Let's talk about you for a bit! Has training been going okay? I hope the Weyrlingmasters haven't been giving you too much trouble."

Iyrith quite enjoyed being picked up. Any other dragonet might express a healthy dose of caution to being lifted, but not her. She burbled and wriggled merrily about as if the tail-hold tickled her. She wouldn't have minded if that had gone on for the rest of her day. She was a simple creature being an infant, easily pleased.
Oh, a different game? her eyes swirled with curiosity, hardly aware that Caith had begun to stiffen up. Little Iyrith would not know she was potentially overexerting a still recovering dragon. She beamed up at the copper and tilted her head as she thought. ...another game, another game...oh! Iyrith didn't prance off too far, and made several attempts to gather up something in her forefeet. Dragons, especially those as uncoordinated as she, could not hold things as well as their human counterparts. She instead decided to pick it up in her mouth, and threw it at Caith. CATCH!

She'd found a broom. Hopefully the copper's reflexes would serve him well.

Ulrece remained unimpressed with the term 'sweetheart' and wore her usual look of just-so borderline neutrality. However, V'nan was not yet to be wholly judged. Insofar his introduction wasn't loud or brutish, fairly reasonable, and if there was anything to be said about the man, his beryllium was actually winning V'nan 'points'. The longer Caith kept rambunctious Iyrith occupied, the more open Ulrece might become. At least, that was the theory. Nobody was happy when they were tired after all, and the woman looked like she needed to gather her thoughts.
That smile of his, not a lewd smirk, but something gentlemanly. Much more genuine and pleasant than she expected, and she certainly noticed it. Maybe even admired it. It had Ulrece nearly smile herself, in turn.
Nearly.

"I am no trouble for the Weyrlingmasters." it is the defensive way she stammered and stiff way she sat that told much different. She sighed after an extended pause, embarrassed. She cleared her throat and tucked a few strands of hair behind one ear. "...I expected her care to be a little more straightforward than it's been."

She tried to be polite, aware Iyrith was still very much nearby. She didn't want to hurt her dragon's feelings, but oh, a weary woman she'd become. Iyrith's endless energy and lack of concentration was a curse.

Well, at least it was something other than that calculated facade, as if Ulrece compiled everything said into memory and never looked back on it. That was supposed to be his job, and he definitely did a better job of keeping a happy facade alongside it. Then the almost smile came across her face, and V'nan couldn't hold back his own cheeky one of success. "Hah! I got you to smile! I guess you're not as devoid of feeling as I had originally thought." The joking nature in the comment shone through, meaning it in good humor.

As soon as it appeared, however, the smile vanished vanished. The stiffness returned and the greyrider returned to her composed stature. Ah well. You win some you lose some. It soon broke, changing into a look of embarrassment. "You mean Iyrith?" The copperrider looked out into the doorway, then back to her. He chuckled. "She's a child, still. Children are always rowdy and rambunctious when they're young. She'll grow out of it soon."

Still, she looked tired. It was obvious that the woman had not prepared for what her dragon would be like, and with an excitable personality as the grey's was, Ulrece had no time to contend with Iyrith. Whatever she wanted to happen, it became the exact opposite. Things like this with Impressed dragonriders were not uncommon, and personalities clashed often. But they contended well, and in the end they balanced each other out. In this case scenario, Ulrece just didn't know how to manage it.

"Hrmm..." V'nan scratched at his chin thought, fingers running over an unshaven jaw and took another sip at the goblet in his opposite hand. "I'm honestly not sure what I can say about that. Caith was well-mannered even as a weyrling, so he never gave me a lot of trouble. Have you talked to the Weyrlingmasters about it? Maybe they can offer some advice?"

Caith in the meantime, did not have the chance or reaction time to grab at the broom headed his way, and promptly got smacked across the nose. Ouch! The beryllium rubbed at his offended snout, not so long after pitching into a sneezing fit as dust clouded around his face. Where has that thing been?!

V'nan winced and rubbed at his own nose, before bursting into a fit of laughter. Caith's sneezing only made it worse, making the man go into full belly laughs and tears appearing in the corner of his eyes. "J-Just-hahaha! Gi-Give me a moment... moment to-!" He continued laughing for another minute or two before heaving a big sigh, another chuckle and then grinned. "I haven't had a good laugh like that in a while." Thanks for enjoying my misery.

"Remind me to thank Iyrith when I go," V'nan said. "She's a keeper, she is. Maybe she should stay the way she is. It'll keep Caith on his toes, at the very least."
