Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aiden was proving to be unusually precocious for a child... Especially one who had not yet Turned seven. His speech was a bit more adult-like than the other 'brats his age, though this wasn't immediately obvious. He had taken to a stern, silent manner that could not conceal his intense curiosity as he watched the word with the same crystal-blue eyes that had belonged to his father.

So when he figured out how to open the door to the creche, nobody should have been surprised. It wasn't that complicated, and besides which, a six-year old was quite capable of walking around on his own. True, he probably should have been supervised at that age, not yet old enough to display a responsibility that would reassure the creche workers... But he was particularly hungry that day, and the smells wafting down the hall from the interconnected system of Lower Caverns were too tempting.

So it was that Aiden marched into the dining hall on his fat little legs, looking around for a kitchen worker who might bring him something to eat. He'd never been in the Dining Hall when it was full of riders... and probably for good reason. The loud, chaotic mass of writhing bodies and loud conversation was too much for him to understand. So he ignored it and set off up one of the aisles between tables.

Few riders noticed a little boy toddling around at knee-length. He probably narrowly avoided being stepped on more than once, but he was unaware of this, simply toddling along with a single purpose. His right hand maintained its grip on the now well-worn Basket, the little blue carved firelizard that had once been very neatly crafted and was now chipped, dented, and worn smooth across the neck.

He didn't know what made him look up then, whether it was the familiar voice or something else, but he did, and as he stared at the back of the rider's head, he was suddenly so certain that it was the one who had given him his firelizard. The rider was talking to some of the others-- Aiden didn't really understand that the wings sat together-- but without hesitation he reached his free hand up, grabbed some of the man's tunic in his fist, and tugged gently but insistently.

WTF AM I DOING
((Oh. Look. I'm immensely late. I'M SO SORRY. *gross sobbing ensues*))

B'usc had sat down to enjoy his meal among the other members of his wing, unable to shrug off and avoid those who encouraged him to sit. B'usc did not make much conversation, not at first. It could be said he had quite a lot on his mind since the departure of a certain bluerider as well as rebuilding his trust with Taiuth since he'd lashed out at him. He was grateful, at least, that while Taiuth was a particularly intelligent brown, his memory was only as good as any other dragon. In relatively little time now, he would surely be content with B'usc again -- not that B'usc would ever remind Taiuth of his memory capacity.
His sluggish social response could also be credited to a lack of klah, which was the first thing he was savoring as if he'd been dying for it.

B'usc did not readily leap into table chatter as quickly as he used to, only gradually inserting himself into it when he was asked. Losing what he had made B'usc consider his words and bonds much more carefully than he used to. He could make idle banter about the weather, or any mating flights that had gone up lately, answers for that came with ease. Still, when B'usc did talk, no matter how calm he may be, it was a well known fact his voice projected powerfully quite on its own. He was a naturally loud man. It was no wonder the little boy had found him.
B'usc nearly credited the tunic tugging to Bacon, if Bacon hadn't currently been eating his namesake on the table.

B'usc did a double-take at his brilliant blue companion. Bacon, who felt suddenly watched, returned the look with some confusion to his owner. He chewed slowly and tensed, as if he expected B'usc to reprimand him for something. Was he perhaps, not supposed to be on the table? Bacon had done it many times before.
He assumed maybe it was someone else's firelizard, as Vaioa Weyr had so very many of them, and B'usc turned around in his seat with a glare and a frown on his face. He was prepared to tell off the creature bothering him.
He instead swallowed his words. His sour expression melted off of him, replaced by the widest of smiles. Rather than be upset the boy was away from his creche and without a guardian, B'usc could not be happier to see him. B'usc could not reprimand exploratory behavior, he saw nothing wrong with this--especially because it lead the child right to him. He'd thought of the boy and his sister many times, often wondering how they were doing. Maybe he hadn't bothered to think of them much as of late, but this surprise visit stabbed at his self-pity and bled into B'usc a swell of joy he sorely needed.

"Aiden!" he exclaimed, reaching down to affectionately ruffle the boy's hair. It was not a name he could forget. "What brings you to B'usc, eh?"

B'usc did spy the stone firelizard held fast in boy's grip, and it caused a stir of warmth within him. Aiden truly cared for it, and B'usc was glad he never ended up bartering it off. In B'usc's opinion, the figurine could not have a finer fate.

Aiden smiled broadly with a toothy grin when B'usc ruffled his hair enthusiastically. To say that the boy was neglected would be quite an overstatement, but he craved more personal attention than he generally received, and it was gratifying to be greeted so warmly, as if B'usc had been just waiting for him.

"Hi!"

Aiden swung his hands back and forth uncertainly, then shrugged.

"Well, I was hungry," he confessed, looking up at the now-rider with wide eyes. "But it's almost dinner so it's okay." He hesitated, then said, "Hey did you Impress?" He did remember one thing, even as a toddler, and that was riders and non-riders. His mother was a rider. His father had been too. And non-riders were anyone who didn't have a dragon. That was all of the creche workers. "Did you get a dragon?" He didn't understand how it worked, and the one time he had asked his mom, Why doesn't everyone have a dragon? Why don't I have a dragon?, he'd been told that you didn't just get one, you had to Impress one. Aiden didn't understand what that meant, only that it was probably really hard, and he probably would have to wait til he was a grown-up.

Sometimes life just wasn't fair if you were little.
