Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

With the next major threadfall in just a few days, T'ech was quite happy to attend to the important task of promoting Vaioa's newest riders. At this point, crowds didn't faze him, and neither did he feel pressured to give some grand speech. He kept things short and to the point, though he did dress the part of the Weyrleader for once in a brand new riding jacket, new knots on one shoulder, and a golden fire lizard on the other. No one could ever say he looked impressive, but he sure looked more like the leader of over five hundred dragonriders than he ever had before.

Malachite class was rather medium-sized, sixteen young dragons and their riders, but it was a class heavy in big dragons and respectable, level-headed men and women. T'ven in particular would make a fine addition to the wings. And two more flaming garnets were as welcome as your average bronze. T'ech read off each name carefully, presenting the newly minted dragonriders with their full knots after they'd taken their oath and shaken his hand.

"Congratulations," the Weyrleader said when all sixteen oaths had been taken. "Your wing assignments will be given to you very soon. In the meantime, feel free to enjoy the banquet and relax."

While you still have the chance.

Nerilan could scarcely believe that a turn and a half had passed since Almyth called her down from the stands and turned her world over on itself. The single lorn cry of a lonely green--that was all it took. She had walked away from her old life without looking back.

Yet weyrlinghood was difficult. She had been wholly unprepared for such a drastic change in her life, and the responsibility of riding a dragon was a weight that constantly bore down on her shoulders--a weight she unsure she could carry. Uncertainty was a rare emotion for Nerilan, one she found difficult to cope with, but she had become intimately familiar with it in the last eighteen months.

But Almyth was always there, gentle and supportive, whispering assurances in her mind and reminding her that she had chosen her for a reason. The green's unfaltering confidence, her untarnished fidelity, anchored Nerilan when her uncertainty might have otherwise ruined her.

And now they were graduating. Nerilan stood erect among her classmates, her hazel eyes glinting with a mix of emotions, but she stood proudly. Her voice was steady as she swore her oaths. While fears and doubts still niggled at the back of her mind, Almyth was a stronger presence, and the love that spread over their link banished any dark thoughts.

We have done it, Almyth said when T'ech concluded the ceremony, her tone exultant. Outside, she settled on a ledge above the lower caverns, eager to converse with the dragons gathering in a celebration of their own.

Nerilan was grinning. Indeed we have!

Enjoy yourself tonight. You have earned it.

You too, my love.

Yes, she intended to enjoy herself. Weaving now among the crowds, Nerilan made for the refreshments, wanting nothing more than a glass of fine wine. Her spirits were soaring; her grin spread a little wider with each passerby that offered congratulations. She felt confident in her soft red dress, with her dark hair braided and coiled in a tight bun at the nape of her neck. Perhaps the color choice was bold, but Nerilan thought that was fitting.

Yes, she thought to herself, this was going to be a good night.

Shalagoth stood directly in the weyrbowl not far from the entrance to the lower caverns. Just over eighteen months old and finally full grown. The bronze could not help but tower over all those that attended the ceremony, watching as classmates and riders entered the cool caverns. Glancing at his siblings arrayed throughout the bowl. Shalagoth stretched out his wings, shading the ground far around, and rumbled as he flexed the muscles in his legs. None of his bronze brethren could match him now, they may weigh more, fly longer or show more bulk, but he claimed the true prize. Only Cirseth and Oceth could look down upon him, and he knew it. His pride nearly unbearable for his rider preparing to take the stage.

T’ven tried to look serious, but a grin kept making its way to his face. Already he found eyes looking towards him, expecting glances, waiting gazes, and he looked down and away trying to keep focused. After all the testing and the memorizing, all those flight patterns and sleepless nights, he had done it. After turns upon turns of standing and tearing his bonded from the shell that held him he could stand among the riders. So he did stand tall today, step a bit proudly, and eventually stopped trying to make Shalagoth be a bit more humble. Might as well let the bronze relish this moment.

The young man had spent hours toiling over the oath, he wanted to get it perfect, just once he would have those words down. As he stepped up before T’ech, towering over the smaller man, he spoke the words. Voice calm and sure, and before he knew it, he had done it. Weyrling knots were taken away, proud new ones bestowed. With it more responsibility. This meant training was done, and the real test would begin. A loud bugle shook the caverns, Shalagoth trumpeting T’ven’s achievement and announcing himself as a new contender. Let all those dragons know he had grown and he would not remain idle during another flight.

Where once the weyrling would have winced at such bravado T’ven grinned. A rider in full taking just a moment to celebrate turns of waiting. Listening as the voice of his dragon shook the life within him. Never alone. T’ven sent the thought, recalling his dragons first words to him, I am with you. The rumbles calmed, but T’ven could still feel Shalagoth’s warm presence. The rest of the ceremony carried on and before he knew it the celebration began. He spotted Nim and Artorias fluttering about the ceiling, maws already full of stolen treats and he grinned. Thankful for that little green and happy to see the blue keeping her company.

T’ven had actually dressed well for this occasion, wearing a fine riding jacket and he had polished the buttons just the night before. Boots gleaming and hair looking well groomed. He spotted Nerilan not far away in a flattering red dress. Weyrlinghood might have been difficult for him, but he could not imagine the trials she had overcome. Still smiling he made his way to her. “We made it Nerilan! Never thought I’d see the day.” To be honest it was true thought, at the end of his candidacy he hadn’t much hope left. Standing where he did today seemed a miracle all its own.

Tis the season for santa dragons
T'lan had been dreaming of this day since he was just a boy. He'd watched similar scenes played out before with friends and fellow candidates as they progressed from Weyrlings to full dragonriders. He'd often imagined himself in their place, though that had become more difficult as the turns went by and his certainty faded. Until that unforgettable day when a certain little Garnet hatchling had picked him from the crowd.

He hadn't expected to feel so nervous as he joined the rest of the class. The day had managed to sneak up on him. With the previous weeks spent preparing for various assessments he'd nearly forgotten about the graduation ceremony. He nerves seemed to be attempting to make up for lost time. He tugged at the hem of his hide jacket, adjusting the fit in a nervous gesture. Tiath was bubbling spot of barely contained excitement and affection in his mind. T'lan couldn't keep a small, fond smile off his face. He could not have managed without her.

T'lan focused on the classmates ahead of him as they stepped up to the Weyrleader. His expression was focus as his turn came and he swore the oath with an almost trembling passion before T'ech. His eyes shown as his new set of knots was put in place, marking his as a dragonrider. Tiath shared in her rider's triumph, making the moment that much sweeter.

He left the platform in a slight daze. It was a relief to have graduated, but new challenges lay ahead for both himself and his dragon. Those worries could wait a little longer. This evening he would enjoy himself. He knew right where to start. T'lan stepped over to the wine table, pouring himself a glass. It had been eighteen months since he'd last enjoyed a glass. "Do be careful T'lan." He smiled around a mouthful of the liquid. "Don't worry I learned my lesson about the stuff quite a while back and don't plan on repeating a past mistake." He reassured Tiath as he looked around the room. T'ven as always wasn't difficult to pick out from the crowd.

"T'ven, Nerilan congratulations!" T'lan greeted the pair, giving his friend a heart slap to the back. "I can't quite believe we're full riders now." He said, shaking his head in disbelief. It was going to take a few days to really sink in. "I suppose we'll be getting our wing assignments soon." He observed, taking a sip from his glass.

K'triz was still in a state of shock even after he had gotten up in front of everyone and took his oath. Seiveruth had been nearby looking as proud and regal as a blue could. Puffing himself up next to his larger brothers and sisters, feeling just as big and knowing size didn't always matter. He was intelligent, clever, and one of the faster flyers in the sky. And in his opinion his rider was the smartest of the lot. The perfect match. They out-shined them all as far as the blue was concerned. As his rider stepped down and others went up to do their oaths he rumbled loudly while reaching down to give K'triz a nudge of affection.

You were, of course, fantastic. And you look better than all of these riders in your new jacket, and those knots!. Have I told you I like the blue clothe? It matches me.

His rider burst out laughing at all the compliments while rubbing his muzzle. Normally it would annoy the blue to be laughed at but today was a special day. Nothing could possibly bring his mood down. For once.

"I'm glad you like it. I made sure to get it as close to your colors as I could. But I still can't believe it. We're an official riding pair now. We'll be part of a Wing from now on. Think you can get along with everyone?" K'triz teased making Seiveruth huff while arching his neck.

I can be civil. As long as they stay out of my way.

"Stay out of your way? And where do you think you're going in the ranks big guy? I don't think they'll ever let a blue lead a wing." He shook his head and chuckled. "Not that I want to squash you ambition, but we have to be realistic. Its never happened before."

That's because they've never met a blue like me. You'll see. We're going places you and me. Right to the top. Nothing can stop us! Seiveruth spread his wings and let out a bugle that almost sounded like a challenge. Let someone try to bring him down. He would show Pern what a blue can do!

K'triz shook his head again but couldn't help but grin at his dragon. He was certainly in a good mood and the boy didn't want to dampen it. Let him dream. What could it hurt? Meanwhile he started looking around at all the others. Eyes searching the crowd for a particular face. It had been some time since the threadfall that Kess had injured her leg in and he had hoped she would have been able to make it to the graduation. But so far he still didn't see her or the brightly colored hide of Tynoth.

The healers might not have let them leave. We can go see them later if they don't show. Why don't you mingle? Need to get yourself out there you know.

His rider just rolled his eyes and started heading for where they were keeping the drinks. He had avoided alcohol since his weyrlinghood started and though he normally didn't care for it, he wanted some. Nodding with a smile to anyone he passed and those around where the drinks were kept he got a glass and nursed it while looking around.

I'gin had barely been able to contain his excitement. This was it! Everything they'd been working for boiled down to this. Today was the day they'd no longer be Weyrlings and would instead be Dragonriders! He peered anxiously about at his peers and then stepped up on stage, still brimming with enthusiasm. So much so that his oath had been wrattled off at the speed of light and he'd had to clamp his hands firmly to his sides so he didn't fidget continuously. His cheeks were flushed by the time he received his knots and he stared at them almost all the way back down the steps. He managed to keep his meagre composure until they were all released from the formalities, at which point a grin plastered his face from ear to ear and he bundled into the crowds looking for his parents.

It was an excited and chattery reunion, having not seen his parents since Vorath's hatching day. They had work and he had, well, Vorath. Still they were proud of him, and I'gin couldn't be happier. He'd done what he'd set out to do; make his parents proud and make himself a better life for himself. He took a while with them, talking, eating and even drinking a little. At one point he even dragged them outside to meet Vorath, the Blue trumpeting and fidgeting about with curiosity at meeting the people who had given him I'gin.

When eventually they had to leave, he bade them a fond farewell, hugged them both and waved them off before returning to the party.

You miss them. Vorath's almost curious rumble slipped into his head.
Yes, but they have work and so do I. It just means we love each other. He explained, pausing with the Blue to admire his handsome hide and scratch his eyeridges affectionately. Vorath crooned delightedly, then shoved his rider in front of a group of party-goers, making him stumble and mutter an apology. So much for calm and collected rider!

Mock-glaring back at his dragon, he then trudged inside and went in search of more food and more company. Today was a wonderful day. Tomorrow, he'd begin life as a full Rider, flying in the Wings and putting training to good use. Putting his life on the line and working harder than he ever had. Today though, was a time for celebration and I'gin was going to enjoy every minute of it.
