Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The morning after the Candidates had tried to sneak into the sands dawned white-skied and ugly. Al'dai knew by now that he had been wrong to do what he had done, but the part that bothered him wasn't why he had done it as much as what he had actually done. Sure, he could admit to himself, to T'ech, to Merilla if she ever came to speak, he shouldn't have kicked the candidate. And probably shouldn't have broken his arm. But the boy had been dripping with disrespect, and it had been clear no amount of words would stop him.

At any rate, he knew Merilla was too angry to speak with him at that moment, and T'ech might be the same, for his Weyrleader still hadn't called on him. Not yet, anyway. For that he was mildly disappointed. He would have expected a bit more understanding from the man. They'd begun to come to an understanding with each other, before the Weyrleadership flight. They'd bonded over shared opinions about the candidates. That, Al'dai had hoped, would count for something right now, when the issue was the very same one they had unexpectedly bonded over.

Still, maybe T'ech had to sort out his thoughts or something. Al'dai wouldn't begrudge him some time. He did know better than to try and lead drills today. Still, Thread fell tomorrow, and Al'dai would be damned to between before he stood aside and let the Weyr ride into fall without him and Lerouth in their midst.

But Taiori had taken over for drills, and Al'dai suspected she was a bit miffed about the whole thing. He wanted to insist it wasn't really his fault, but... maybe it was? He couldn't tell anymore. Within the past 16 candlemarks he had heard so many versions and rumors that he himself could hardly remember what had actually happened.

Nonetheless, he owed Taiori, not just for taking over wing practice for the day but also for showing up the night before. Al'dai doubted he would have seriously hurt Adonis-- a broken arm wasn't serious, that would heal-- but nonetheless it was good Taiori had shown up before he'd done something he would really be in trouble for.

So he'd invited her to drinks. He doubted she'd consider it fair payback but after spending a day shut up in his weyr, he was desperate for company. Even taking a seat at the far edge of the hall and pouring a mug of ale for himself drew looks, and none too friendly. He sighed to himself. What did he expect? Who would be grateful that he'd stopped the little shit from running onto the sands and infuriating cirseth, as well as disrespecting her and the weyrleaders and candidate masters? He took a long swig, spirits dropping. At least there was one person who wouldn't whisper rumors behind his back about the day-old events... or so he hoped.

Taiori frowned a little to herself as the sight which greeted her in the Dining Hall was Al'dai alone and hunched over a mug of ale at some side table. As if the stares and talk weren't bad enough, but the bronzerider putting himself in the corner as if he had something to feel guilty over is what did Taiori in.

She interrupted whatever thinking he had been doing by coming up behind him and greeting him with a fond slap on the shoulder blade.

"That mine?" asked Taiori, although she didn't wait for an answer. Al'dai's mug was in her hand in a moment, and she savored the mouthful of crisp, cold ale she stole from it.

Thirst temporarily satiated, the copperrider roughly hooked her fingers into the the collar of her Wingleader's tunic. Taiori jerked up on it hard, intent on getting him up off his tailfork and up where they belonged.

"This ain't our table. Who're you hidin' from?"

Al'dai watched mutely as Taiori sauntered up and downed his ale. Better her than him, he knew-- the last time he'd gotten very drunk with her, things had gone poorly (or nicely, a soft voice whispered in the back of his head), and with things being how they were, he supposed getting well drunk was out of the picture, at least for tonight.

Al'dai was caught off guard when she yanked him to his feet, though, and he straightened, removing his tunic from her grip and pursing his lips.

"I'm not hiding," he responded shortly, glancing around. He had been hoping to lay low for a bit and not feed the rumor mill any further, but with Taiori's colorful entrance, they were now drawing stares from most corners of the room. He shrugged. Might as well ignore them; they'd probably stare no matter what he did. Who didn't want to take a glimpse of the Wingleader who a half-dozen-odd Weyrlings and riders were swearing had drinken the blood of a candidate last night and then dumped his body between? He managed a kind of pained grimace in place of a smile. He didn't really care what they said, as long as T'ech wasn't about to kick him out of the Weyr, and something told him that wouldn't happen. Unless he was just hoping again. "Where do you want to sit?" He held out the case of ale suggestively.
