Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

After dinner, Aniese was hoping to return to the barracks and cool off a bit. Even this late into the summer, the heat was almost unbearable, and she wanted nothing more than escape. Even within the lower caverns her skin felt hot and flushed, though that must be her imagination. She wondered if she was unwell, but decided she would be fine with a little bit of rest and some water.

Rhias, however, swung her legs over the bench and announced loudly that she'd love a drink to slake her thirst. She, too, agreed that the heat was unbearable. And she said she could really go for a mug of ale.

Aniese wasn't sure how to reply to this. She'd never had any alcohol but fine wine, and only in relatively small doses, at Gathers, as the daughter of a Holder. She'd never even tasted ale, let alone drank a full mug of it. She wasn't even sure she could drink a full mug...

But they had the evening off, and Aniese was feeling strangely devil-may-care. Since officially moving to the Weyr, she'd become much meeker and softer than before... But with Rhias as a roommate, she was regaining some of her spirit. And she hadn't worked in the Kitchens for over a turn for nothing.

"I know where they store the ale," she said breathlessly, grinning because she knew what she was helping Rhias to do was forbidden. But it's not like they'd be kicked out of candidacy for stealing a little bit of ale, right? If they did get in trouble, Aniese would say it had been her idea. Then Rhias could still Stand, and if Aniese got kicked out, at least she already knew she'd make a good Lower Caverns worker.

But nobody stopped them as they snuck back into the kitchen. In fact, the area was nearly empty, save for one lone worker who was stoking a hearth and didn't look up. Aniese winked at Rhias and walked boldly over to the pantry, where the alcohol would be.

She found one of the half-barrels and dragged it from its comfortable home, leaving a track in the dust behind it. It won't be missed, then. And then Rhias had popped it open, and Aniese had discovered that, while she didn't enjoy ale as much as she enjoyed wine, it was not bad at all.

She lost track of how much she had drunk. It was nothing to Rhias's cupfuls, of course, especially because Aniese was sipping at hers more slowly, but she had achieved a pleasant lightheadedness that indicated pre-drunkenness. She had only felt this once before, and she had enjoyed it very much. Aniese supposed as long as she did not get more drunk than this, she would be perfectly safe in the morning.

She grinned at Rhias, loosely, and pointed out of the window into the dining hall. O'zen had just walked past to leave his dishes after the meal. "He has a nice bum," she confessed, giggling heartily. O'zen was well out of earshot, which was lucky for Aniese, because the alcohol seemed to be lowering her inhibitions greatly.

Rhias tapped Jo's nose as the little brown investigated her drink. He gave her an offended look but retreated to the shoulder not occupied by Setto. She might be well on her way to shit-faced but she would never be drunk enough to let her babies drink alcohol.

Head buzzing and fingers and toes tingling with the beginning of drunk numbness, Rhias regarded the fine view of a former Weyrleader bending down to deposit his trays on a table for a drudge to clean up.

"Hot damn," she whistled. "You are right."

She gave Aniese a sidelong grin and took another long drink. "You know 'im right? Have you ever had some of that?" Aniese had told her, of course, that she'd never been with a man before, but that particular fact eluded the candidate at the moment. She wondered if she was feeling bold enough to go have a word with the bronzerider.

"I should go over there. Do you think I should go over there?" She giggled. "I heard bronzeriders are great in the sack."

Aniese choked on her drink and sprayed the mouthful of ale she had been about to swallow out onto the counter. "What?" She blinked with unrestrained shock at Rhias. "Had some of that!? You've got to be joking me."

She hesitated, then as Rhias continued, shook her head. "...nnnnnnno." Aniese couldn't remember at that precise moment why she was mad at O'zen, only that she was definitely mad at him. And she suddenly felt certain that if Rhias went over to him, she'd definitely tell him that she said he had a nice bum, which was not something she thought he should hear.

"When you say great in the sack," Rhias began in an offhand tone, still vaguely watching O'zen, then shooting Rhias a look. "Do you think a guy's dragon size has anything to do with... uh... you know? How good they are in the sack."

"Man, you should have. I might." Rhias waved her mug at the bronzerider but he didn't seem to notice them. If he had, he was completely ignoring them. Perhaps picking up drunk candidates in the dining hall wasn't quite up his alley. She turned back to Aniese with a wide, stupid grin on her face. "Oh, not at all. It's just a silly thing to joke about. There was this bluerider back at Igen that was...well...are you going to be ok? Don't choke on that."

Was this the first time Aniese had had anything potent to drink? Probably. Rhias wondered vaguely if she'd be pouring her roommate into bed or holding her hair back for her before the night was over. Th part of her that wasn't a giggling idiot lamented the fact that Aniese would probably never want to drink again after this, but the rest of her was determined to enjoy what silliness she could while she had this opportunity. Everyone deserved a night of abandon once in a while.

"No, what you should really look at is the size of their feet...I hear that's a good sign. Or the hands. Does O'zen have big feet? I bet he does." Also a bunch of silly garbage, but such a common one that, well, what harm could it really do?

Aniese gesticulated vaguely as she tried to express the thought that was having difficulty forming. "I just... don't walk up to men and ask them to... go hop in bed with me," she explained. "I mean, say there was a guy... some guy who was good, in the, you know... some guy I wanted to... go to bed with. I don't really know, well, I don't think that he would feel that way. So if I did say something..." She mimed walking closer to Rhias with a ridiculous sashay and placed her hand heavily on Rhias's shoulder. "...'Excuse me, good-looking man, but I believe we should go do unspeakable things together,'" she said in a tone that was somehow serious though it was clear at the same time that she was pantomiming the scene.

"...You know, I think he might be uncomfortable," she finished, removing her hand and staring into her mug with sudden distaste. She was pleasantly buzzed and hesitated to drink more, to stave off a slide toward real drunkenness. "I don't know what he'd say but it would probably be not very nice. Even if it was polite he'd just... I don't feel right, making someone else uncomfortable. Ruining their day and all. They were just minding their own business and I just interrupt their thoughts and put them in a position where they have to say no, they do not want to do anything of the sort with me, and then they feel bad. Or maybe they don't feel bad, they feel happy in getting to say no, and then I feel bad, because it was stupid to say anything in the first place." Aniese sighed and let her hands fall. "That's why you shouldn't ever tell an attractive guy if you want to do something with him..."

Aniese shook her head and grinned suddenly. She hadn't meant to get all serious and the mood was bubbling away as quickly as it had come. "Well O'zen's feet, I dunno, I never saw them. But his hands were pretty big." She remembered the times he had shown her how to stretch so she didn't hurt herself, or to do certain exercises. "I guess that could be good for bed," she said, doubtfully.

Rhias snorted. "I think that if you wandered up to any man in this room and asked for a roll in the furs, he'd probably say yes."

Aniese was, she decided, entirely too tipsy to be so worried about such things. She poked her friend's shoulder. "You forget that we're in a Weyr. People are much more liberal with their sex lives here than at a Hold. The worst someone could really do is say no. And then you move on and forget about them and they forget about you."

Rhias matched Aniese's grin with a devious smirk. "See, watch, I'll show you."

She brushed the brown fire lizard off her shoulder, took a deep breath, and then moved fluidly across the room, hips swaying, to where the former Weyrleader was talking with another rider. "Hello there," She purred. "Is your evening free? I believe me and you should do unspeakable things to each other. What do you say?"

O'zen didn't notice Rhias until she was a few steps away, but she snagged his attention as soon as he glanced in her direction. She approached him with hips swaying and a look of fearless intent in her dark eyes--eyes fixated on him--and he turned to face her, a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth.

Her question was so direct that for a moment all O'zen could do was give a sharp bark of laughter. The woman wasn't particularly attractive, but not unattractive either, and O'zen liked the sound of unspeakable things. Cutting his eyes to the brownrider he'd been talking to, whose mien was lit with surprise, he gave him a wry look as if to say, Aren't I good? then turned his smile back on Rhias. "I say that sounds good to me."

Rhias was tempted, oh she was so tempted. Here was a perfectly handsome bronzerider, ready and willing to fall into bed with her. A few months ago, she would have left Aniese behind without a thought. But having an actual consistent friend in her life for the first time had changed the way she looked at certain situations.

As things were, she'd come over here with very clear intentions. She needed to make a point and she was going to do just that. She slid closer to O'zen, sliding a hand under his shirt and up his chest, kissing away that cheshire smirk of his and looking for all the world like she was about to drag him back to bed with her.

Instead, she stepped away and turned her back on him, giving Aniese two huge thumbs up. "See?" She called out to her friend. "I told you so!" She gave O'zen a saucy wink. "Sorry handsome. I was just trying to make a point to my friend. Better luck next time."

Rhias practically skipped back over to the other candidate trying - and failing rather spectacularly - not to cackle to herself. "So you saw that, right? I used your exact words. And you're much prettier than I am! I bet you could get any fardler in here following you home like a lost puppy."

O'zen was all too willing to let the woman lead, since she seemed hell bent on taking it. Who was he to complain? As she drew up against him he thought dimly that it was never this easy, that she had to be drunk, but she silenced all the sense he had in his head when she pulled him into a kiss. Drunk or not, this woman wanted him. The smirk returned when she broke away.

Yet it disappeared soon enough, replaced by a look of sheer confusion when she turned away as if she'd forgotten his existence from one second to the next. When she gave her shout, O'zen knew he'd been played. Blankly, he stared at her as she apologized, then bounced off to join her friend.

Beside him, the brownrider was howling with laughter, leaning over the bar to support himself.

O'zen felt a feeling like humiliation slide through his stomach and rise like heat to his cheeks. Then, as he followed Rhias' retreating form and saw that her friend was Aniese, humiliation morphed into anger. He made deliberate eye contact with her, sending her his best scowl, before the murder in his eyes passed and he called with forced nonchalance after Rhias, "You'll regret that!"

Then he savagely turned his back on them and drawled an obscenity at his friend, which only served to send him deeper into hysterics.

Aniese watched in dumbfounded shock as Rhias sauntered over to-- oh no, no, not him, she'd gladly let Rhias play even T'lan instead of O'zen-- and considered very seriously the possibility of sinking to the ground below the bar and melting into a puddle of embarrassment. That way, at least, they wouldn't see her...

But she was more curious than horrified, so she took a quick gulp of ale and watched with a wide-eyed mixture of fear and interest as Rhias exchanged a few words (Please don't let those words be 'my friend thinks you have a nice bum') and quite slid her hand up his shirt and kissed him. Aniese would have choked again if she had been drinking. As it was, her mouth fell open in clear horror, and she stared at the pair in disbelief.

Only when Rhias sauntered back, cackling, did Aniese hitch her jaw up off the floor and glare at Rhias. "What in Faranth's name was that?" She hesitated as Rhias explained, and shook her head ruefully, beginning to grin despite herself. "My exact words? Well that's fine, but I'm--- I'm not prettier than you!"

Before Aniese could argue that specific point, she risked glancing back at O'zen. Just in time to catch his furious glare at her.

A half-turn ago, Aniese would have quailed at that look, would have actually sunk to the floor or been reduced to tears. But a lot had changed in a half-turn, beginning with her friendship with Rhias and ending with a cask of ale. Instead of dropping behind the bar and blushing, she raised her right hand, planted the thumb on her nose, and waggled her fingers at him. Stuck her tongue out, too, for good measure.

Then he turned away and she dropped her hand and glanced over at Rhias, caught by a bunch of giggles and momentarily unable to form words.
