Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

To say T'ech was a hot mess was an understatement. Actually, practically everyone at his little table in the darkest corner of the dining hall was a puddle of drunken rediculousness, but T'ech and O'zen were probably the worst off. The larger of the bronzerider's had an arm around the Weyrleader and was telling a very animated story.

The other occupants of the table, T'ven and a greenrider T'ech had only met once or twice - Sabine, Tytoth supplied - laughed uproarishly and T'ech just tried not to drown in his flagon when O'zen shook a laugh out of him.

He didn't have to think about that vicious wher that called the hatching grounds her home right now or those that blamed him for the ongoing incident. Or those who whispered that there was something wrong with the clutch. Something unnatural that kept Cirseth from allowing even her precious rider to view it. "Frankly," he announced in the odd silence between O'zen's obscene stories, "Everyone else can go fardle themselves sideways."

With a cactus, Tytoth added helpfully for the group to hear.

T'ech choked on a rather undignified giggle. "Yes, fardles them all. I bet every last one o' them eggs is a gold!" He leaned back, hoping to find the warm support of O'zen's arm but found nothing and toppled back onto the floor instead. There were a few disapproving stares but for once, he couldn't be fardled to care about them. He was in the company of friends tonight. T'ech let his head drop back against the hard stone floor of the dining hall and laughed till tears pricked his eyes.

Jim strode into the dining hall, having heard whispers of his weyrmate's behavior. The greenrider had hardly believed it at first, given T'ech's attitude toward his responsibility, but disbelief had soon given way to concern. He decided he had better put a stop to things before T'ech embarassed himself beyond recovery.

With a bit of searching, he located his lover and crossed over to him only to find hm sprawled on the floor. Jim stood over him, one hand on his hip, and raised an eyebrow.

"Are you quite done, yet?"

"Jiiiiiim!" T'ech reached up with grabbing hands towards his weyrmate. Thank Faranth it was J'ean and not Talora. "Come join me. S'comfy down here."

If it had been Talora, he might have sat up, tried to compose himself and made the effort of perhaps drinking some water. But Jim had seen him at his absolute worse. A bit of drunken silliness on the floor of the dining hall shouldn't be too much for him to handle. At the very least T'ech didn't feel intimidated by him as he would with Talora. He grinned ear-to-ear.

You're going to hate drills tomorrow, Tytoth said cheerily. T'ech waved im off even though no one else would have heard that particular comment.

"Have a drink with us! We're celebratin' not giving a shaffit."

Jim sniffed, "No, thank you. I'm not in the market for a hang-over today."

He lifted the bronzerider to his feet and then looped an arm around his chest to keep him from going anywhere.

"Say goodbye to your friends. It's time to go home." He waved at the other riders, singsonging, "Byyyye."

Without further ado he swung himself around, practically dragging T'ech along with him, and headed for the Weyrbowl. Naelayth was waiting for them; with some effort, Jim settled his weyrmate in place - made sure all straps were very secure - and then flew them back to their weyr.

T'ech struggled in vain against the much taller man, reaching forlornly for the table and his friends. "Wait! Nooooo, c'mon we were just joking around. Jim!" In the morning, he'd be properly mortified, but right now all he felt was that he actually fit in for once. There was a small group of people in the Weyr who didn't think any less of him for needing to let off some steam once in a while and they were rapidly fading from sight.

T'ech pouted and managed a half-glare in what he was pretty sure was Jim's general direction. "Why'd you have to do that? I was having fun. Don't get to do that ever. Not anymore at least."

Tytoth, vacant from his guard spot at the entrance from the hatching grounds for the first time in over a week, peered down at the two riders with bright curious eyes. He draped an affectionate wing over Naelayth. At least he hasn't peed on himself yet. He's been much worse than this. Right after we transferred, for example.

"Shaddup. Traitors. Both of you."

Naelayth crooned to her big friend and nestled closer to him as Jim worked on getting the Weyrleader indoors. The tall man ignored T'ech's comments, steering him to toward their bed. He sat the bronzerider down (or rather, steadied him as he fell on his bum) and then helped him remove his shoes.

The greenrider sat beside his love and rubbed his back. "You'll thank me later. And besides, who said the fun had to end once we left the public?"

"Are you propositioning me, wingrider?" T'ech leered at his weyrmate, trying - and failing rather spectacularly - to give the greenrider a seductive look. He leaned in to kiss Jim and lost his balance, falling face first into the larger man's shoulder. "You don't think there's anything wrong with th' clutch right?"

My children are all perfect, Tytoth informed his rider quite seriously. And my daughter makes perfect children as well. If there is a fault in the eggs, it is not on me. He curled around the mossy green on their ledge, glad for her company. It was so lonely guarding the hatching sands at night; he missed her warm presence at his side.

T'ech nuzzled into the strong shoulder in front of him. "Why can't that old tunnelsnake just let us see?"

Jim smiled fondly down at T'ech and wrapped an arm around him. He rested his cheek on top of his head, saying, "No, there's nothing wrong. Cirseth is just being a wherry with a bent tailfork. Maybe she wants to keep them all to herself as long as she can."

Straightening up to prevent a crick from forming in his neck, he pet the bronzerider's curls. He enjoyed the way they sprung back into position when released.

"There's no reason a clutch produced by Cirseth and Tytoth should be anything but the picture of health. And even if it wasn't, it would hardly be your fault. The Riders know that." After a moment's pause, he added, "How is Talora holding up? I don't think I could bear it if Naelayth wouldn't let me see her."

T'ech drew strength from his weyrmate's embrace, soaking up Jim's words like a sponge. They would give him strength in the days to come, he felt, when it seemed like everything was happening all at once. He leaned into the hand in his hair and hummed thoughtfully. The haze that had overtaken his thoughts had begun to lift, leaving a slight throbbing in his head and a tingling in his fingertips.

"Talora is an experienced Weyrwoman, but I think this is finally testing her patience," he said with great effort. It was hard to enunciate.

"She puts on a strong front, but I think this is harder on her than anyone." Yet another reason he was glad it was J'ean that had fetched him and not the Weyrwoman. There was a deep-rooted guilt for daring to feel as stressed as he did when his partner had it so much worse.

Cirseth still talks to her, Tytoth said. He yawned hugely. They are not truly parted. She lets Talora sit in the entryway when she's blocking it and stroke her side; I've seen them together. It's not so bad...

Jim smiled a little at Tytoth's words. "That is a little comforting. The whole thing brings a brand new meaning to 'I can't wait for the Hatching...'"

He sighed and wrapped around his weyrmate, bending his head till he could feel the warmth of T'ech's cheek on his. "How are you feeling?," he murmured. "Should we put some of those lovely things we bought at the last gather to good use? Or would you rather just lie down for a while?" He pet his man as he spoke, sinking into the warm, secure feeling that only being with his love could provide.
