Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Although it was towards the end of the lunch period, and most of her fellow Candidates had left the dining hall to prepare for their afternoon assignments, Kuilu was laid back in a seat, lounging and staring up at the ceiling as her feet rested upon the table in front of her. Undoubtedly the slightly chubby girl would take as much time as she possibly could to relax right in this very spot, taking as long as possible with her relaxation without getting her in trouble with her superiors. She still had just under a half-hour to return to the barracks from what she could tell, so she was going to laze to the max until then!

A fluttering commotion of wings in the rafters caught her eyes, and she followed the noise to a small fair of firelizards flitting about in the rafters, seemingly racing and tagging each other as they played in their little group of mostly greens and blues. The girl chuckled as she stared upwards at the playing firelizards. She though she saw movement nearby from the corner of her eyes, and assuming someone was nearby to talk to, she spoke, "them firelizards can be pretty silly, but at least they're cute little buggers. Don't you agree?"

Like he often did, Mehan was spending his free time by himself, in the quietest place he could manage. Unfortunately, today Cassius had decided to play with some of the other firelizards, so the young man was sitting in the dining hall, tucked in a relatively quiet corner with his needle and thread, trying his best to be invisible. He had thought he was doing a reasonably good job at it, too, until a girl that he'd taken to be napping spoke.

"Um, I guess so," he responded quietly. It would have been rude to ignore her. "It's hard to tell sometimes, because of all the trouble they cause." A flush colored his face and he furrowed his brow at his stitching. He'd gotten a bit better with getting Cass to mind, but that didn't mean he'd forgotten about the last touching. "I can't do anything about the others, but if you're bothered, Cassius and I can leave."

Kuilu grinned at the softly spoken boy who seemed rather unsure about his answer back to her. "You're not sure?" The girl pressed, though her voice was gentle and laced with amusement as the young man continued. "Yeah, I guess they can be pretty troublesome sometimes. Getting into everything, flitting around people and sometimes being as noisy as possible while they do so." Her gaze shifted from Mehan to watch the firelizards again, though she continued to speak. "I guess I don't really mind that much. If anything, I usually find those things to be really funny. And don't worry about your firelizard bothering me. I'm enjoying myself and I'm sure your firelizard is, too." The girl stretched her arms as if she had indeed just awoken from a nap before saying, "besides, I wouldn't mind talking to you. I should probably get to know some of the other Candidates, after all."

"There's times it almost doesn't seem worth it," Mehan admitted. Above, Cassius screeched and dove, nesting in his boy's hair for a minute before flitting off to zoom around Kuilu's head. "Cass! No."

The blue stopped, settling on the girl's shoulder and chirping apologetically. As a gesture of friendship, he rubbed his face against her cheek and then raced off to return to his game.

"Sorry, he's... over-excitable. I've been working with him though." Somewhat grudgingly, he rose and moved closer. "I'm Mehanjolnir, by the way. Nice to meet you."

Kuilu chuckled and sympathized, "Yeah, I can imagine that they can be rather annoying and pesky, and I know plenty of people who hate them for it. I guess I just don't care so much," the lazy Candidate surmised with a slow shrug, her expression never losing its cool as her eyes tracked the blue firelizard began to flit around her head, only to be scolded and nuzzle her face in apology before flying off again. "No, it's fine. It seems there are a lot of them like that. Always flittering about people. It amuses me," Kuilu smiled as the lad introduced himself, "I'm Kuilu. Well met, Mehanjolnir."

"So, you're a new Candidate? How long have you been here?" Conversation was not Mehan's forte, but he was pleased to see he was not being a total dimglow. "Have you stood elsewhere? I stood for the last clutch, but..." He shrugged in a what-can-you-do gesture. "Obviously I didn't Impress. Hopefully this time will go smoother," he added vaguely, frowning and stabbing his stitchwork in agitation.

"That I am. Have yet to stand at a clutch," Kuilu nodded as she finally made the effort to lean forward instead of back in her chair, though she looked no less relaxed as she lowered one elbow to the table before resting her cheek on her palm, her head to the side now and tilted towards him. "I've been here all my life, though. Weyrbrat. I could have began to Stand for clutches a couple of Turns ago, but only recently decided to do so. It'll be interesting to see what happens," Kuilu mused before listening to the young man's own experiences. "That would be nice, though I can imagine there are plenty of dragonriders who Stood for several Turns before they Impressed. Unless you're within a few months of aging out, you shouldn't be that worried about being left Standing at a clutch." She paused so that she wasn't dominating the conversation, then calmly continued. "How much longer do you have, then? I know I'll have close to ten Turns to do this, so I'm not in any rush. I'll just wait and let whatever happen, happen."

"Um..." Mehan began, ticking off on his fingers, trying to remember exactly what the age limit was. "A little bit longer than five Turns, I think. I'm not really worried about being left Standing, honestly. I can always go back to the Weavercraft. It's just looking like a complete deadglow that I'm not to fond of."

Again.

"Worried about looking like a deadglow, hm?" Kuilu's voice was quite nonchalant as she regarded the older Candidate again. "I dunno, I'm sure there are plenty who would love to be in your situation, even with the chance of looking like a dimglow. Not everyone gets to be a Candidate, after all." The girl gave a noncommittal shrug before continuing, "of course, if either of us are to Impress, I guess we can hope that it happens sooner as opposed to later, but that's well outside our control." She grinned easily as her eye drifted towards the playful firelizards, "between your firelizards and your experience with Standing, you're probably more prepared to Impress a dragon than some."
