Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The Good Kind of Crazy
Late afternoon sweeps always meant a missed dinner, not something that Gaea really enjoyed or that put her in a good mood. But the Nighthearth was stoked and there was some food that could possibly hold her over until the morning meal… maybe. She walked over to the hearth and filled a cup with some hot klah. Ah that picked her up a bit. She sat down at the table that was next to the Nighthearth and just enjoyed the klah for a moment.

Is there something for you to snack on there? Coruth murmured, she could feel just how tired her rider was, but she knew that she would need to eat at least something to keep her through the night. Gaea looked tiredly around, Nothing much, rolls, some early fruits, maybe a meat pasty but I don’t have much hope. There might be something else that she could get but she was still new enough to the Weyr that she didn’t know what she could get late at night here. For now though she was content to just drink the klah.

Her stomach rumbled, demanding something be put in it. She looked at the rolls and sighed… maybe she could sneak some makings out of where the food was stored and make something for herself. Setting the empty cup where other used cups were she decided she had the energy to explore. Leaving the Nighthearth she made her way down a hallway… she knew her way through this warren off rooms during the day when there were people and smells to guide her, but in the middle of the night with the majority of the glows covered it was another story. She made a wrong turn and was walking down a hall with plenty of doors wondering what each of them belonged too.

Making another wrong turn, Gaea found herself looking down a long dark hallway with that underground smell coming from it… and a familiar and terror inducing sound; the slither of tunnelsnakes. Fear rippled through the woman as she watched the tunnelsnake skitter into the glow light. It hissed at her rearing up a little, Gaea stumbled backward and tripped over her feet falling down. Remembered terror and pain from that childhood attack paralyzed her. The tunnelsnake hissed at her again, slithering closer.

Coruth started to her feet outside of the Lower Caverns, her eyes turning red as she felt Gaea’s fear. Calm down Gaea, the grey urged as she looked around for anyone she could send in to get her rider. When they were Weyrlings Gaea had come face to face with a large tunnelsnake in much the same situation but Coruth had been able to defend her rider. It had been a fear that the grey had never been able to console her rider about. Is there someone awake? My rider needs help. She asked the area around her hoping that there would be someone to hear her call… With almost the entire Weyr asleep she didn’t know if anyone would. With the call was a sense of the fear that her rider was feeling and transferring to Coruth.

C'ail's story was much the same as Gaea's, except while she and her dragon were off on sweep duties, he and his dragon were stuck up on the weyr rim, saddled with watch duty until a blue and his rider came to relieve them for the night. It was long after dinner hour, but C'ail had gone to the Nighthearth anyway, knowing there would be some sort of food set out. What he found was the same disappointing setup that Gaea had passed up on only moments early. He had seen her when she was leaving and thought nothing of it.

Food was food. C'ail decided he would have to be satisfied with what was there. Filling a plate with a couple of cold rolls and fruit, pouring himself a cup of klah, he found a table near the hearth and sat to enjoy his meager dinner. He couldn't complain; it was better than nothing.

Riventh, however, was not hungry. He had eaten only yesterday. Made restless by the long hours spent grounded on the weyr rim, all he wanted to do was stretch his wings before he and C'ail settled in for the night. As his rider sat in the dining hall and ate, the copper circled idly above the weyrbowl. He heard Coruth's call, felt the fear that accompanied it, and immediately started toward the distressed grey.

Where is your rider? What has happened? Riventh touched down beside the grey, his eyes shifting to yellow as he regarded her. My rider is in the kitchens, he offered urgently. Perhaps he can help?

Riventh had already contacted C'ail, passing along Coruth's anxious message, as well as the fear she had projected with it. He was already on his feet. But he didn't know who the grey's rider was, much less where she was. He couldn't help until he had more information.

Relief filled Coruth when the copper Riventh answered her, She is by the hall that leds to the storage rooms, she told him, panic growing in her voice. She was getting a wash of fear and panic from her rider, Threadfall didn’t faze the two but when she was confronted by a tunnelsnake, Gaea became completely terrified. Coruth felt no need to hide what her rider normally did. She is terrified of tunnelsnakes, and one has found her… She began to pace a little outside of the entrance, her eyes whirling yellow and red with her fear, anxiety, and panic.

Gaea’s back was against the wall as she tried to get farther away from the stalking tunnelsnake. Trapped, she was trapped just like on that day all those turns ago. Surrounded by rock and unable to move; with no hope of being saved quickly. She was deaf to her dragon’s call that there was someone coming, she couldn’t think past the terrifying sight of two more tunnelsnakes appearing out of the shadows. Clammy fear sweat soaked the shirt she was wearing under her riding leathers, she would be savaged just like she had been then. She couldn’t stop it, couldn’t prevent it.

In the hall by the storage rooms, Riventh relayed to C'ail. At this, he remembered seeing a woman leave the dining hall, moving in that direction. There had been few other people in the area; that could have been her. He set off jogging toward that hallway, weaving among tables and chairs.

Tunnelsnakes, Riventh added, and his voice hitched with rising anxiety. At that word, C'ail spat a curse and quickened his pace, entering the half-lit tunnels at a run. Most of the glows were covered at this hour, but enough were left shining that he managed to find his way to the storage rooms. And all the while, he could hear Riventh trying to reassure the other dragon, trying to break through her panic.

It will be all right, he was repeating. C'ail is looking for her! It will be all right.

Rounding a corner, C'ail came to a corridor lined with doors and halted. Those were the storage rooms.

There was no one in the hallway. He was in the wrong place.

With another curse between set teeth, C'ail wheeled around to retrace his steps. She's not there, Riventh. Unsure without a destination, he moved at a jog and listened, hoping that there might be some commotion that could guide him. Otherwise, it would be a long search. He did not know these tunnels well.

With her back solidly against a wall, Gaea couldn’t move back any further and the three black Tunnelsnakes stalked closer to her. They hissed and bit at each other, apparently fighting over who would attack first. Give her thread any day of the week; she would fight thread in her bedclothes if she never got to see a Tunnelsnake again. The largest and the first one that had found her won the little fight and lunged at her. A scream torn at her throat as its fangs sunk into her calf above her boot as its claws tearing into both legs. She tried to kick at it as pain shook her from her fear induced paralysis, her hand scrambled for her belt knife, though it wouldn’t do much it would be better than just her hands.

When Coruth felt the pain come over the bond with her rider, she spread her wings and gave a low growls and whines. Shifting anxiously back and forth, she peered into the entrance. They attack her! She told the copper, fear for her rider in her voice. She tried to listen to the copper, tried to calm down, but she couldn’t when she wasn’t able to protect her rider.

They're attacking--C'ail! Helpless as Coruth, Riventh gasped his rider's name like a supplication, pleading him for urgency.

As if he weren't already moving as fast as he could. C'ail heard the screams--he didn't need Riventh to know what was happening now--and sprinted toward where their echoes faded. She was close, and although he still didn't know her exact location, that one scream was enough to point him the right way. He ran, strained to listen over the sharp click of his boots against stone, and almost stumbled over Gaea when he veered around a corner and found her there.

C'ail didn't have time to think. In what may have been later regarded as a very foolish move, he lurched forward, snatched up the tail of the tunnelsnake at the woman's feet, and flung it down to the dark end of the hall. Then, rather than facing the two others, he knotted his fingers around the collar of her jacket and hoisted her to her feet.

"Come on!" he panted, unceremoniously dragging her after him, indifferent to whether or not she actually kept her feet. In his haste, he was rough, but he caught her arm to keep her from falling. Only when they had put some distance between themselves and the infested hallway did C'ail slow his pace and finally take a good look at the woman.

"Are you all right?" he asked; and only then did he notice the tears in her pants, just above her boots. For the third time, he swore under his breath.

She bit back another scream as the tunnelsnake with its teeth in her leg was pulled away tearing at her skin more. Then she was being dragged to her feet, she stumbled her injured leg not wanting to support her weight. The man’s firm grip on her arm kept her from falling but it was a close thing as he pulled her way from the tunnelsnakes. When they slowed and stopped she leaned against the wall, panting. She trembled, pain shooting up her leg. When he asked if she was alright she looked down at her legs, her pants were in tatters. “Um… well it bit me and my leg is starting to burn.” She said.

Coruth calmed down a little when she felt that Gaea wasn’t in danger any more, but she was still upset greatly. Tunnelsnake bites could be very dangerous. She continued to pace though, she wouldn’t be happy until she could reassure herself that her rider was okay. Thank you’re rider for me. She gauged the distance to the infirmary from where they were.

Frowning down at the wound as if he could scowl the venom away, C'ail sucked in a breath and ran his hands through his hair. But by the time his gaze rose to meet Gaea's, his expression had softened. She was frightened and hurt; she didn't need him glaring at her.

He exhaled in a slow sigh. "We need to get you to the infirmary then. You shouldn't walk..." He took a step toward her, paused and looked her in the eyes as if to ask permission for what he intended to do. Then, carefully, he took her in his arms and lifted her up to cradle her against his chest. The woman was small and didn't weigh much; C'ail had no trouble carrying her. He set off toward the infirmary, moving as quickly as he could without jolting the woman in his arms.

While C'ail was not normally very conversational, it occurred to him that talking would help distract the greyrider from her injury. "Just what were you doing that deep in the lower caverns at this time of night?" he asked, trying to keep his tone light.

C'ail, the woman's dragon says to thank you, Riventh interjected. Outside, the copper bowed his head low in sympathy. He couldn't bear the mere thought of being helpless to help C'ail if he were in a similar situation. But the grey was calming, now that her rider was out of immediate danger. C'ail will take good care of her, he said, seeking to continue assuring her. They will be here soon.

A different sweat than fear sweat was starting to bead on her brow, the pain radiating from her leg made her vision swim a little. She closed her eyes to try to keep the pain back, but she opened them to give C’ail a shaky smile the infirmary sounded like a great place to go. Gaea was glad for the relief of pressure off her bitten leg, she also didn’t have to worry about falling over. She turned her face so her cheek rested against his shoulder.

If she wasn’t in pain she probably would be worrying about how weak she must appear, needing to be carried. You are not weak, love the calming voice of Coruth in her mind reassured Gaea, You are injured and hurt, and walking would make it worse. The grey rider blinked at C’ail’s question. “I got lost to be honest,” she admitted with a little blush, “I’m still new to the Weyr so I don’t quite know my way around the lowercaverns when there’s no one here.”

Coruth was glad of Riventh’s reassurances and she gave the copper a nuzzle on his shoulder in thanks. She could feel the pain that Gaea was feeling over their bond, and it made her shift her feet in unease. She knew there was always at least one healer in the infirmary, she hoped that that healer would know what to do. Tunnelsnake bites could get bad without the proper care. Thank you again Riventh, for hearing. She told the copper.

"Ah, I see," C'ail replied, the corners of his mouth flicking upwards. "They do take a little while to get used to." He was a fairly new rider himself, although he had been at Vaioa long enough not to lose his way anymore. Still, he remembered well what it was like when those tunnels were wholly unfamiliar to him.

It was good that he knew them well enough to find his way to the infirmary. He could have retraced his steps out to the weyrbowl where the dragons waited outside, but it was quicker to cut through the lower caverns.

Riventh, I'll meet you at the infirmary. Tell the grey.

"You know," he said softly, "when you come across tunnelsnakes, it's a good idea to run." His tone was not scornful, nor mocking; it held a note of gentle humor; he was still trying to cheer her up.

Ah, we were simply in the right position to help, Riventh said, abashed by Coruth's gratitude. He paused then--communicating with his rider. Then he turned to Coruth, explaining, C'ail is taking your rider to the infirmary straight through the lower caverns. We must meet them there. Loping awkwardly because the distance did not merit flight, Riventh moved toward the infirmary.
