Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Weyrling
Although his first couple of months of Weyrlinghood had been filled with the same lack of self-esteem and fear of failure and bad impressions that seemed to always plague the boy, Z'hinn was beginning to realize that maybe things weren't quite as bad for him as they had once seemed. It was not too long ago that Z'hinn had fumbled a little doing a task during a lesson and had immediately feared the worst before Oilarth comforted him by pointing out that the other Weyrlings didn't seem to care about his mistake and wouldn't really care if the short lad kept up his hard work ethic. Indeed the scarred boy realized that everyone had been going on with their work as normal and he didn't hear the snickering and weird looks that he had always expected when he made a mistake, and ever since then he began to wonder if this was the beginning of something new. He had been improving with his skills throughout Weyrling training - even his near illiteracy that he had struggled with as a drudge and then Candidate was well on the way to becoming a nonissue - and had been losing quite a bit of weight from the demands of their physical training.

Of course, there were a couple of people that he had always felt more comfortable around than most of the others, people who he had felt had always been supportive of him, and now that Z'hinn was beginning to break free of the specter of shame and embarrassment that had once plagued him, he gained an even greater appreciation of those who had always stuck by him. Just a couple of days ago, the idea that he should do something extra to show his gratitude had popped into his head, but even after spending his free time and even a couple of hours of staying awake and staring at the ceiling in thought instead of sleeping gave him no good ideas of how to do this. It was one morning just as the Weyrlings were heading for breakfast when Oilarth had interrupted his musing.

You should ask her what she wants.
The blue's words surprised him. It was at this point that, although there were several people whose friendship and support he appreciated, there was one person who stood out amongst all others.

How would I go about doing that though?

Despite having been a drudge when he started working in the Weyr, and having been so often immersed in crowds of people, Z'hinn still seemed to have a lack of knowledge for refined social graces. Heck, still worried about saying the wrong things when talking to people, much less doing more special and intimate things for specific people!

Just ask. Fillianth's won't bite you.

But I don't want to make her hate me!

You'd have to be trying to make her hate you. You're just worried because you like her more than you think.

What does that mean!?

Z'hinn's only response from Oilarth now was a certain feeling of smug satisfaction, and that left the young Weyrling to seek out his greyriding friend. He was in the dining hall now, and once he got his food, he approached the tables, his eyes scanning for his friend. "Veiryn?" He called out as he saw her, approaching her with a muted expression on his face, though a certain blush lightly tinted his cheeks withou his knowledge. "Can I sit with you? I wanna ask you something."

In which Veiryn shows off her lack of tact and grace...

Morning dawned cheerfully over Vaioa. Dragons were stretching their wings. Firelizards were causing havoc. Weyrfolk were starting their tasks, and Veiryn was powering through her breakfast like Thread through a vegetable garden, shoveling forkfuls into her mouth before she had even fully swallowed the one before it.

Slow down, slow down. You’re going to choke! Fillianth hissed, spying through Veiryn’s eyes.

Am not, the girl groused, pausing in her half-hearted attempts at chewing. She puffed out her cheeks and made a face, even though the grey was nowhere in sight. She wouldn’t be receiving an award for feminine grace any time soon, that was certain. Besides, I don’t have time. I gotta do stuff.

What stuff, do tell?

Dunno…stuff. Loading her mouth again, Vee paused as a familiar voice called out to her. She tried for a welcoming smile, but it fell short, her lips more focused on keeping her meal contained. A quick swallow and a small cough (ignoring Fillianth’s smug “I told you so”) later, she opened her mouth. “Two things, Zu. One; don’t call me Veiryn. It so, ugh,” she shuddered, “formal. Two; we’re friends, aren’t we? You don’t need permission to eat breakfast with me. Y’know, unless the table was full. Because that might cause some teensy problems.” She glanced pointedly around the half-full table and scooted over, nudging a surly-looking Bluerider out of his spot a few inches. Her hand patted the bench beside her. Once he was seated, she speared another bit of meat and ripped it from her fork. “Now, what did you want to ask me?” she pressed, thankfully having the courtesy to hide her mastication behind her hand.

The young bluerider hid his feelings of amusement when his friend half-choked her food down her throat. It was a funny sight to be sure, but the last thing Z'hinn wanted to do was to make Veiryn feel disparaged because he found amusement in her eating. He did, however, blink surprisedly as she spoke again, balking at the formality of her full name. The short lad felt like he had missed something somewhere, and retorted, "then what can call you? Just Vey?" He was sure he had heard a nickname for his greyriding friend at some point, though what exactly it was eluded him at the moment. He did turn a little red at her second contention as he scanned the table for himself. "Right, of course, I'm just, well.…"

Stop worrying.

Z'hinn chuckled softly at his dragon's insistence, a spark of amusement making itself known at just how simple the blue's words and thoughts tended to be. The complexities of their riders' emotions and relationships tended to be quite lost on the dragons, and yet sometimes they seemed to have a better idea of their riders' true emotions than their riders could ever admit to themselves. He tried to push away this thought and the words that Oilarth had said to him before about "liking Fillianth's more" and sat down next to his friend. "Well, I wanted to talk to you because," and Z'hinn's voice became much quieter, his already harsh and scratchy voice lowering itself to a whisper in the hopes that only Veiryn could hear him. "We've been friends for a while now. Not very many people have stuck this long with me, and, well, I appreciate it, but I don't know what I can do to show you my appreciation." After he had said this, he took a bite out of his own meal and chewed it thoroughly, giving her ample time to think of his statement and giving him ample time to think of how to follow up before swallowing and speaking again. "What do you think I should do for you?"

“Vey’s not bad, as far as nicknames go, but most people just call me Vee. It’s short, it’s sweet, and it can be signed with a single letter. Sometimes they call me Ryn, too, but I’m not so fond of that one. Besides, I think there’s a Rin here already, so yeah…but it’s your call. So long as you stop callin’ me Veiryn, I’m okay with it.”

Another morsel was impaled and sacrificed to the ravenous entity that was her stomach, though this one was fully tenderized as she chewed thoughtfully, mulling over his words. How deliciously adorable was that? A tad sad, that he thought friendship had to be paid for, but sweet nonetheless. She made a show of looking thoughtful, glancing at the younger boy out of the corner of her eye. A delightfully wicked notion came to her and she set her fork down, twisting her torso to face him squarely, wearing her most serious expression. It was one she pulled off quite well, considering all of her serious bones happened to be broken.

“You must fan me with jungle foliage and hail me as your Queen and Supreme Ruler of All of Pern,” she proclaimed, raising her head regally. A few snickers ran along the table, but she ignored them, fighting against her own smile that threatened to betray her. “Only then will the kindness of my friendship be fully compensated.”

You are a terrible person, my Veiryn. Disapproval was clear in Fillianth’s voice.

And you’re a nosy busybody, darling, Vee countered, her own tone fond and soft, sponging away any sting her words might have held. You’re absolutely right; I am terrible; but still nosy.

The poor boy’s head is liable to pop, what with you acting in such a manner. And where would that leave Oilarth? Rider-less, with no choice but to go between, that’s where.

Oh, you’re so dramatic, Filli-dear. Zu knows I’m not serious. However, on the off-chance he didn’t, Vee abandoned her silent argument with the grey and allowed her smile to break free. Her nose crinkled as she tilted her head and leaned closer, resting a hand on his shoulder and dropping her voice to match his whisper. “Really, though, no tokens are necessary. It doesn’t cost me anything to be your friend, and I’m happy to have the job.”

"Vee. I'll have to make sure I remember that, then," Z'hinn nodded this promise as he cut off another piece of meatroll, chewing it slowly as he waited for his friend's reply. He wasn't really sure what to expect her to say, and he began to imagine various things that she could say; maybe she wanted more time to hang out together, or a special little trinket, or maybe even nothing at all because that's what being friends meant (he wasn't exactly used to having a stable, long-term friend, so he wondered if that was a thing). He could have never guessed what she was about to say, and a blush rose on his cheeks when he heard the snickering of the other Weyrlings. "Er…" he was immediately embarrassed, but he very quickly realized that the words were so over the top that even Z'hinn realized that she was joking with him, proven when she leaned closer to him and told him her actual thoughts on the issue. "Thank you so much for saying that," he whispered right back, "I'm happy to be your friend, too. Well, uh, I guess you knew that already." That was smooth.

Z'hinn's words brought a smug smile to Vee's face. "Of course you are. I'm spectacular like that."

Modest, too, Fillianth added, broadening her mental range to include Oilarth.

Hush, you, the girl growled, making a face and jabbing her fork threateningly into the air in front of her.

Oh-ho. Struck a nerve, did I?

Veiryn rolled her eyes and rested her head on her hand. "So, friend. Wanna do somethin' if you get a free moment later? I hear you're getting better at swimmin'."

Although Veiryn's words were laced with a certain sense of smugness, Z'hinn couldn't help but grin widely back at her with a chuckle, since he wasn't exactly one to argue against the young greyrider's spectacularness. The younger bluerider's expression danced almost gleefully as she mentioned his swimming. "Yeah! I am! I've been working pretty hard at it, and it's really paying off. I'm about back at where I used to be. I'm still surprised I forgot in the first place, though. You would think a kid who grew up in a Seahold and was the son of a fisher wouldn't forget something like that. I guess it had been a while, though…" Z'hinn purposefully did not mention why he had stopped swimming, how he had almost died along with his father at sea when Thread had snuck up on their small craft. "Did you wanna meet in the water caverns later, then?"

Veiryn ripped apart the last traces of her breakfast and downed her fruit juice (she'd never really developed a taste for klah, as it tended to make her sick), standing up from the table. She gathered her dishes and slapped Z'hinn on the shoulder in a way that was friendly, if a bit heavily. "It's a date, then," she said cheerfully before moving to clear her place and head out into the Weyrbowl. She paused at the entryway, glancing back with a bright smile. "Oilarth's welcome too, Zu. I don't know about him, but Filli's getting a bit dusty."

I am not!
