Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

How far away are they?!
The hour had grown late and most of the Weyr had gone to bed; it was at this hour that Rayna began to relax... and she needed it currently. The woman had become even more volatile as of late; when things were not right she did not just chide or scold but rather bellowed at the staff. Her usual sarcasm had been replaced by anger and the fondness that had been hinted behind her stern tone had vanished completely. The staff blamed the fact that Aniese had been Searched (they all knew that the woman had no fondness for Dragons 'stealing' her staff) but this was only really half right. Aniese being Searched had been an annoyance, Aniese bringing up Rayna's past had been downright infuriating. While the young woman had asked only a simple question and had not, in fact, known nothing of what reaction she would get the aftermath for Rayna's staff had been... less than desirable.

Since pouring her heart out Rayna had become irritable, the memories were back and she had admitted to who she really was - this admission was more than she had allowed herself in over twenty Turns and the consequence had been a modd shift. Her anger was out of control and she knew it, her grasp on her staff was tentative for the first time in a great amount of Turns. She had let her staff go from their duties early, finally getting exhausted with having them around her.

One of her best bottles of Benden sat open on the table beside her cup. The Headwoman had found herself a table at the far end of the kitchens in a corner where she could lean her chair back and put her feet up on the table without fear of falling backwards. One hand remained clenched around her cup while the other rubbed at her temples. Oh life had been simpler when she had been younger...

Where are you going at this hour, hm? You should be sleeping, yes, you need your rest. No time to be wandering around the Weyr, no it's not.

Eveline sighed as Efrith's chiding voice rang through her head, rolling her eyes slightly as she continued on her way to the kitchens. She knew what this was really all about: Efrith hated when she went anywhere without her. She'd been prickly that way ever since she got too big to follow her around past their Weyrling days. One would've thought that thirty-something odd Turns would've broken the dragon of that annoying habit, but... well, she couldn't blame her.

I'll be back in a little while. I need something to eat--or, better yet, something to drink. Surely they have something decent in this damnable Weyr to slake an old woman's thirst, she grumbled mentally, hooking her thumbs on the hem of her pants as she sulked into the kitchens.

Just as she was rooting around the half-abandoned place, looking for something that would satisfy her, she realized that she wasn't alone. Curiously, she lifted her head from her search and peered at the woman sitting in the corner.

Oh, shard it all. It's the Headwoman.

I told you to come to bed, oh yes I did, but you just never listen.

Stuff it, Efrith.

The dragon's laughter pealed through her mind like a bell, and she sighed as she straightened up and gave the woman a stiff half-bow.

"Evenin', Headwoman. You look about how I feel," she added. The woman looked tense enough to snap in half, her fingers wrapped firmly around a cup of-- oh Faranth, was that wine? "Oh... I never thought to see good Benden wine again. That bottle brings back memories."

Lifting the cup to her lips the woman took a long gulp of the wine, draining half of the contents with ease. Had she not been hardened to Benden’s best she would have been swaying by now; fortunately for a woman of Rayna’s position she had been drinking the wine for quite some time and had become almost immune to its strength. She was even luckier in the sense that she was almost always sent a couple of bottles as a bribe to try and get her to come to other places as their Headwoman. Despite her constant refusal the offers did not seem to stop and her favourite tipple was sent by the bottle load in the attempt to coax her from Vaioa to another Lower Caverns.

After this episode the woman had been sorely tempted… but she had chosen Vaioa as her last station and she would remain at the Weyr despite her admissions and despite how she was currently feeling. After all. That was what good Benden was invented for… Or at least so Rayna had long since come to believe. For once the woman was not accompanied by her Fire Lizards; not one of the trio dared to come too close to their woman in her current mood and even the less intelligent Shard It All had taken to avoiding being around the woman in case she got yelled at… That said they were not far away; sat amongst the rafters her Brown, Blue and Green watched her with loving and worried eyes as always, ready should they feel even the slightest opening where she might need a cuddle.

It was Seeker who noticed the old woman first, swiftly followed by Watcher after the Blue gave the Brown the information he had. With this Watcher turned his eyes to the woman, scrutinising her and storing clear images of her in his mind ready to give to Rayna should he believe she needed to see them. So far the woman was no trouble; just another late night comer to the kitchens, seeking food and something to drink – the Fire Lizards were used to this occurrence. Rayna, however, did not always need their input to know when she was not alone, she was more than aware of the other woman’s presence – she had just been ignoring her… until she heard the shifting of clothes which meant she had been spotted and was being approached.

Moving her hand from her head she looked at the Rider, nodding her head in return as Eveline bowed to her, at least the old girl remembered her etiquette even if she really didn’t need to bow. “Good evening.” She replied, curtly at first before a flicker of a smile found its way to her face for the first time in days as Eveline mentioned the Benden. This opening was enough for Shard It All to swoop from the rafters with a chitter, landing on Rayna’s lap with a hum as the Green settled herself comfortably in place. “At least you have good taste Eveline of Efrith.” The woman chuckled softly, stroking Shard It All with one hand. Clicking her fingers she waited for the tell-tale sound of wings, lifting her hand to take the cup from Watcher and Seeker as her boys brought her a spare at her bidding. They took up place on the back of her chair, ever watchful eyes on Eveline. “Join me won’t you? It’s not often I find someone who truly understands how to appreciate a vintage as good as this one. It’s about time SOMEONE in this Faranth forsaken Weyr truly appreciated what they were drinking.”

Eveline watched with curious interest as the firelizards swooped to both announce her presence and serve their mistress' whims, diving and darting to get the headwoman a second cup that she could fill with the good Benden vintage. She had heard that some of the little beasts could be trained to perform various tasks as their bonded willed it, but she had never realized that some of the lesser colors were so capable. It was obvious that the woman had her lizards firmly under control and very well-trained.

"Oh, thank you," she added, almost too eagerly, when the headwoman offered to share her wine. "Feels like it's been ages since I last indulged. When you've grown up on Benden wine, nothing else will do."

She moved to take a seat, ignoring Efrith's mildly annoyed grumbling as her dragon wavered between sleep and the waking world.

"I suppose it has to do with these desert-dwellers and their godforsaken patch of sand. Can't grow good grapes this far from good soil. I'm surprised with every Turn they manage to grow enough crops to feed us all. They're certainly ingenious, even if they are a bit backward."

As the lizards stared at her from the headwoman's chair, she couldn't help but smile. She hadn't spent much time around the lesser cousins of dragons, but she had to admit they had spirit.

"Your little companions are lovely, by the way. Very well trained, too. Color me impressed."
