Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Days had passed since the last Fall, and O'zen's anxiety for Lenth had finally begun to subside. His wounds, although widespread and deep, were not fatal; already the bronze had forgotten the extravagant pain he had endured for O'zen's sake, having only a dull ache to contend with now. Lenth would finally be allowed to return to his weyr tonight, so long as he checked in to the infirmary frequently to get his injuries redressed.

O'zen, too, had been recovering. Just as time had soothed his fears for Lenth, it had dulled the shock from his near-death experience. Yet it had no effect on his guilt. He could not stop himself from speculating how the Fall would have turned out if he had warded himself and Lenth a little more carefully.

It would have been easy to turn to the drink; it would have been easy to forget, for a while. But O'zen refrained. He declined a kitchenwoman's offer of wine. He would wait for A'yar.

There were a few topics he wanted to talk to his Wingsecond about. He wanted to discuss the last Fall, at least briefly. But mostly, he needed advice. He had hoped the feelings that had sprang up after Teliarth's flight had been a fluke; a lingering effect of dragonlust, perhaps. Yet Threadfall had merely confirmed their existence; he had been more nervous for Nira than he cared to admit.

O'zen didn't know anyone else to go to but A'yar. The man was his Wingsecond. He didn't trust anyone else nearly so much as he did the copperrider.

It was with a loving ruffle of Onja's ears that A'yar departed his weyr, glancing out briefly at the sky to make sure of the time. O'zen wanted to see him, most likely to discuss what had gone wrong in the most recent Fall. He was glad that the man had sought him out - it saved A'yar the trouble of having to do it himself. A brief stop at the infirmary had ensured him that his Wingleader was still well and alive, just banged up and bruised. He hadn't had time to talk, though - a busy healer had bustled him right on out of the room.

So it would be good to finally take a full inventory of his friend's injuries. He wouldn't guilt O'zen by telling him that he'd worried him, the man had enough on his plate now as it was. New wing plans would need to be drawn up, and running reports on any injuries would be filing in from the infirmary. A'yar wondered if he should run interference on any of it, but decided he'd only do so if asked. Didn't want to bruise the other man's pride, after all.

He paused briefly in the doorway of the dining hall to ask a passing drudge if she'd seen O'zen, nodding politely when she pointed in the bronzerider's direction. He settled on to the bench across from his friend with a broad grin, crossing his arms on the table and leaning forward, making an attempt at subtlety when he checked for any obvious bruising or lacerations.

"Have you eaten yet?" He asked, pondering if he should investigate whatever was bubbling on the hearth.

A'yar's smiling visage was a welcome sight to O'zen. Offering his customary half-smirk in return, he leaned back in his chair and waited as A'yar made himself comfortable. It was good to see him; O'zen had been relieved to hear that his Wingsecond had emerged from Threadfall unscathed, but only now could he confirm it with his own eyes.

"Not yet," he responded with a slight shrug of his shoulders. He hadn't had much of an appetite lately, but ate a decent lunch anyway, just to keep the healers off his back. That was hours ago, but even so--"I'm not too hungry. But you go ahead, if you're hungry.

"I am, however..." he trailed off; paused to look around for the kitchenmaid from earlier. "Quite thirsty." Seeing her, he caught her eye and waved her over. Glancing from him to A'yar, the woman disappeared into the kitchen and returned a moment later with a bottle; she was apparently familiar enough with O'zen to know what he wanted. She deposited the drink at their table, along with two glasses.

Helping himself to the wine, O'zen glanced back to A'yar. "So, last Threadfall--How did the wing perform in my absence?" He knew there had been some casualties; Rin passed fleetingly through his mind. "Did D'nes do all right as Wingsecond? And W'es, how did he and Avath perform?"

Now that he had seen for himself that O'zen was obviously capable of walking, talking and drinking, A'yar was more comfortable with tending to his own needs. He excused himself briefly in order to procure a bowl of what appeared to be a kind of vegetable-heavy stew, and when he placed it down on the table in front of his seat he seemed less than enthused about it. Poking a limp lump of what was presumably at one point some kind of tuber, he thought about how to answer his wingleader's question.

"They performed admirably," he said after a moment, making himself think back to the Fall. "The dragons kept themselves and their riders in line. You have already heard about any of the wing's injuries, so I won't...rehash those." A'yar scooped some of the stew into his mouth, wondering if he should be disturbed by the fact that he didn't even have to chew before he swallowed. "D'nes and Galanth were good and sturdy, helped keep the new formations in line, what with dragons moving up to take places and such. W'es and Avath..." He had to think harder about that one, but Sith helped, forcing a mental picture into his rider's mind. "Avath got some minor scoring on his tail, but stuck it through the remainder of the Fall. I was proud of them."

But not of yourself, Sith grumbled, and was politely ignored.

A'yar grinned at O'zen over the rim of his glass, shooting his friend a wink. "I'll say though, your job isn't one I covet. I'm much happier being the backup man."

Pouring himself a generous amount of wine, O'zen was content to wait while A'yar left to find his dinner. When his Wingsecond returned, setting his bowl on the table before him, O'zen peered at its contents and privately decided that he did not regret passing up food. As A'yar jabbed at his meal, O'zen sipped his drink and waited.

Then, while A'yar related the events of the Fall and the performances of his riders, O'zen nodded as if that were what he expected all along. A'yar's report satisfied him, validating his reasons for trusting D'nes and W'es. And although he did not say so, he was grateful that his friend skipped over the injuries; he didn't need to be reminded.

The corner of his mouth twitched upwards in a smile at A'yar's comment. "Well, I don't intend on going anywhere," he replied lightly. Hopefully A'yar would never have to take over for him again. "You did well, though. I'm grateful."

Silencing himself with a sip of his wine, O'zen took the time to think over his next topic and found himself at a loss for how to begin. Brows pinching together in a frown, he stared down at his glass, as if searching for an answer within its contents. The ripples in the red wine revealed nothing to him, and so he sighed, forcing himself to begin before he changed his mind and kept his problems locked away for good.

"I need some advice," O'zen muttered finally, raising his eyes to regard his friend. "You know Nira." She was in their wing; he would at least know of her. "I've been spending a lot of time with her."

O'zen sucked in a breath, then exhaled in a sigh. "I like her a lot, A'yar--more than I ever intended to."

A'yar prodded a bit more at his stew before deciding that was probably enough dinner for the evening. He settled the spoon down on the table next to his bowl with a bemused smile, reaching instead for the wine. It wouldn't do to let O'zen drink by himself, after all!

He'd only gotten to take a sip or two before O'zen had finally gotten around to what he'd really wanted to talk about, and he leaned forward, interest sparking in his eyes. Yes, he knew Nira. Greyrider in their wing, had a lovely laugh, always seemed to be at least content with her surroundings. No wonder she'd caught his friend's eye!

This was an interesting twist, though. Typically O'zen's encounters with women were interesting but brief, and the bronzerider had no lack of ladies that were interested in him at any one time. Thinking back on it, A'yar wasn't sure he'd ever really seen his wingleader dote on or spend a good chunk of his time with any one individual. Aside from himself, of course, but that was different!

"More than you ever intended to, hm?" A'yar repeated gently, lips curving happily. "Well, I fail to see how that's a bad thing, friend!"

"It is a bad thing," O'zen insisted, wondering by A'yar's smile if it were a mistake to confide in him after all. "It's a hassle. It's distracting!" Nira occupied his mind far too much. He was a busy man; he had more important things to think of: drills and wing arrangements and injuries. And he couldn't help but worry about her all throughout last Fall. He couldn't have that, not with a wing to lead!

"I don't know what to do about it. I don't want to be that involved with her." Ah but, shard it all, he did--and that was the problem. Conflicting desires, he supposed. He'd never wanted to get too close to a woman--always seemed like too much trouble to him--but Nira was something else. She'd wormed her way into his life, and now he couldn't decide whether he wanted her to stay there or not.

A'yar watched his friend's face carefully, propping his cheek up on a fist. "I don't really remember a time where you've been 'involved' with anyone," he said, not unkindly. "Without knowing what that's like, how could you know that you don't want to be involved with her after all?"

Unbidden, his mind flickered back to the few romances he'd pursued, and he sighed at the thought of Macha, of Olwyn. The Garnetrider's leaving had been expected and therefore not painful, but he'd honestly thought that the lower cavern's woman would have stuck around, considering that her flightmothing had given them a child together. Her initial distance and then rapid disappearance had baffled and wounded A'yar, and when their daughter was born and Olwyn faded out of his existence altogether he'd been left reeling.

Being involved with people was often difficult, he mused. But it was often also rewarding.

"I don't see the harm, if it's just a casual thing at the moment." He tacked on, realizing that he'd been staring off into space during his flashbacks.
