Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

The bowl had still been mostly dark when Edme had left her barracks and wandered down to the kitchen’s, which were very much alive and kicking. Careful not to get anyone’s way, she’d served herself an early bowl of gruel and a day old loaf of bread. From there she’d slunk out into the dining area and curled up at the corner of a table.

One leg tucked snuggly under her backside, Edme leaned over the table, face propped up with a wrist. She looked half asleep, back bent, head down, but she wasn’t. Of course she wasn’t hyper aware, and the steam from her klah was still clearing her eyes from morning grit, but she was up. Always had been an early riser. She liked the cool quiet of the morning. It felt more comforting than the evening quiet. Day light was coming instead of darkness. Seemed more hopeful to her.

Yawning, she rubbed at her face and started eating. She hadn’t bothered with a spoon, but instead tore peces of bread from the loaf and used that to shovel gruel into her mouth. It was tedious process with one hand, but she didn’t think her neck was alive enough to hold her head up just yet. And the klah, well that was hot enough to burn her tongue and strong enough to make her eyes water. Which was goooood.

How far away are they?!
Since becoming a Candidate Kai had seemingly taken another under his rather muscled wing. Tymarol had become rather attached to Kai since their lesson in the desert and the older Candidate had discovered that the younger lad had a thing about following him. The ex-Smith had a feeling he was like this with his brother but since Kiramen was a miserable cretin (in Kai's opinion at least) Tymarol had found a friendlier companion to shadow. Not that Kai minded particularly. The lad was cheerful enough if a little socially demented.

Used to being up at ridiculous hours the Candidate had found himself restless, what he had not expected was to find the younger Candidate crawling about on his hands and knees following a Trundlebug with his Fire Lizard in tow... Kai had found it particularly amusing to watch the pair as they shuffled along the floor, their noses so close to the ground that they might as well have been dragging them across the floor. Once the pair had realised they were being watched they had sprung up off the ground like they were doing something they shouldn't have been.

Kai had laughed at that before offering to escort the youngster and his handsome Fire Lizard to the Kitchens for breakfast. It was early but they might as well get a head start on the day!

"I think Trundlebugs are fascinating." Tymarol continued as he had since they had started chatting. "They can survive in any condition and did you know that if you stand on one it doesn't always kill it?" The lad said happily as though this was the greatest news in the world.
"Does it not?" Kai asked, actually intrigued by this nugget f information.
"No! They can actually survive it if they can get into a ball quick enough. They have very strong shells that protect their soft bodies from harm. That's why wherries and Fire Lizards can't eat them if they're in a ball, they have to crack them first."

The trio entered the Kitchens together, Heist quite happily settled across his boy's shoulders as Kai ushered the younger lad inside. The tall Smith grabbed a tray and put some gruel, bread, fruit and meat scraps upon it before getting himself a cup of Klah and some fruit juice for Tymarol. Lookin around he spotted another Candidate and grinned. He did so love to socialise. Pushing Tymarol forwards he grinned at the girl. "And a good morning to you fellow Candidate! Might my friends and I join you?" Ever the charmer...

Edme looked up slowly from her meal, klah steam wreathing her face and making it hard to focus on the figures standing over her. Blinking, she sat up straight rubbed her now free hand under one eye. Once the mist cleared so did her vague impression of two looming creatures, they became instead two looming candidates. Though one was not so looming - Edme was probably a good three inches taller than he. And the other was… leering? Edme wasn’t sure.

“Um.. Of course, good morning.” Grabbing her mug, Edme took a long pull of the klah to help dispel the sudden sense of awkwardness that had come over her table. Mildly curious, as she hadn’t seen any of the other candidates up this early, Edme watch them take their seats and get situated.

Once the two were settled, Edme started in on her breakfast again, which was meager compared to what Kai had gathered for himself and Tymarol. Strangely enough, having the two join her made the world seem more normal to Ed. She was used to packing in on benches with a bunch of other Runners in the morning for breakfast. While neither of her companions looked much like runners, especially the big, it still had the camaraderie feeling Edme had been missing since coming to the Weyr.

Sure, now she was part of a Weyr, and there were plenty of other people in the same candidacy boat as she was, but it didn’t feel the same. Edme didn’t feel a sense of belonging like she had before. For almost ten years she’d identified herself a Runner, and now suddenly she was… Not. What was she, besides waiting?

“Up so early for a reason?” She inquired, quietly around a piece of bread.

Kai grinned to himself as he felt Tymarol step back towards him; ah the poor little lad, so awkward in front of others. Kai had discovered early on in their odd little relationship that socially Tymarol was utterly useless. Tymarol was extremely intelligent, that was quite obvious, but he did not seem to have an internal filter for his comments... as one rather blunt statement to Selena during their first lesson together had shown. Despite this Kai had decided he liked the lad and whats more he wanted to help try and bring the lad some understanding of social etiquette... as warped as his was anyway.

Guiding the younger lad into a seat he settled himself, set out their breakfasts and winked at Tymarol who was looking particularly put out by this sudden interaction with someone new. However Tymarol had little time to think on the situation as no sooner had they sat down then Heist was off his shoulder and heading towards Edme's breakfast. Before the lad could even protest at this the Blue had sniffed at her Klah and gruel and huffed at it in disgust before turning around and zeroing in on the scraps of meat Kai had brought. "Heist. Learn some patience will you?" Tymarol chided affectionately as the Blue sat in front of him, crooned and stood on his hind legs to nuzzle at Ty's chin with the tip of his nose. Rolling his eyes the little lad offered his Fire Lizard a scrap of meat, grinning as he watched the Blue snatch it up and chew on it gratefully, humming with happiness.

"I can't speak for my little friends here but for myself I'm used to being up early to set the forge going for the day's work. Smith's rise well before the rest of Pern, although some never seem to sleep." Kai chuckled as he sipped at his Klah gently.
"Heist woke me. He found the Trundlebug and came to get me. He's very clever, he knows to come and find me if he finds something interesting." Tymarol stated as he began to eat his gruel, watching as Heist eyed his spoon.
"What about you? Why such an early riser?" Kai asked.

Edme eyed the blue flit cautiously, worried that it would crawl into her klah cup. Luckily it didn’t seem to interested in her drink or food, since it wasn’t meat based. She smiled when it went begging to it’s owner for scraps. They really were amusing creatures. She’d liked Devon’s well enough. Sinking a bit of bread into her gruel, Edme sat back and lifted her cup. She was going to need it to follow two conversations so early in the morning.

“Used to be a Runner. Getting out early was always good practice. Besides, who could sleep with all the snoring?” Edme explained herself simply, with some humor as well. It was true enough. They’d all bunk together more often than not, sleeping in cubbies or the floor of the office, sometimes in a loft. The snoring always bothered her.

She wasn’t surprised to learn that the big man had been a smith. Or at least, it fit since he was built like one. The trundlebug boy though…

“I’m sorry…” Ed said, setting down her cup and looking at Tymarol curiously. “But what’s so interesting about a trundlebug?” She didn’t sound dismissive or condescending in her tone. Reserved as she was, Edme didn’t have a cruel bone in her body. She just wasn’t an open and affectionate person, especially to strangers. She was genuinely curious about why the boy would find a bug so interesting.

She shot a confused look at his big companion, but he just looked more amused than knowledgeable.

With Heist curled up to one side, munching more than happily on the scraps that Tymarol and Kai fed him, one then the other so that they could eat their breakfast without the Fire Lizard chiming in every so often in his desperation to be fed. Once he had eaten enough (it didn't take long, he was hardly that big) he shuffled over to Tymarol's arm and wrapped his tail around the boy's elbow as if to claim him, watching Edme with interest.

"A Runner!" Tymarol cried with interest, sprouting a snort of amusement from Kai which went unheard to the young lad's ears. "Wow! Then you must be in GREAT shape! That and you must have seen LOADS of Pern! Runners get everywhere, I like to learn, bet it's fun seeing loads of new things. Don't you think so Kai?" He asked, looking at his friend with his large blue eyes glittering.
"Oh I'd say so." Kai replied with a smile. "Don't forget your redfruit." He said, nodding his head to the fruit still sat on Tymarol's plate.
"Oh right!" Tymarol grinned.

To say they were unrelated it was amusing to watch them both; it was clear they both had siblings - their interactions were so similar. At Edme's question Kai lifted his cup to his mouth and tried (as he so often did when around Tymarol) not to burst into hysterics. He knew all too well what that question would bring but he didn't mind, it amused him greatly.

"What's so interesting? Why... everything!" Tymarol answered enthusiastically, backed up by a chirp from Heist. "Have you ever really looked at one before? They're fascinating, really they are. They're very clever. Did you know that if you stand on one it doesn't always kill it?" He asked Edme just as he had Kai before.

Edme blinked, her eyes wide at Tymarol’s outburst of enthusiasm for her being a Runner. She’d never had anyone but a few small children respond in such a manner to her chosen profession. Hiding a smile, Edme stuffed a piece of gruel soaked bread into her mouth and nodded politely while chewing.

“Er, yes. It’s really a beautiful place, our Pern,” she told him once he’d quieted and she’d swallowed. Another amused glance at Kai was all she got in before the lad was telling her exactly why trundle bugs were so fascinating. Edme leaned back a little, her klah mug turning circles in her hands. She thought he just might crawl over the table and shake her in his excitement, just to make sure she understood how absolutely fantastic they were!

Even the fire lizard chimed in on the matter, which made Edme desperate to have a good roll on the floor and crack up. Instead she followed Kai’s example and took a drink of klah, which she almost choked on, and stared wide eyed at Tymarol over the rim of it. He was right though, that was kind of interesting.

“I suppose its good then. We Runners run them over all the time. No chance or room to go around them usually, and jumping them is just asking for a sprained ankle. So we just… not squish them, I suppose.” With half a grin on her face, Edme ran a hand through her close cropped hair.

“Are you both Standing, then? Or have you come to examine dragons, and then make armor for them?” She was teasing of course, but her face was so deadly serious.

One thing people have to learn quickly about Tymarol is this; he sucks up information. The lad lived off it. What seems trivial to some is utter gold to the young boy – if he can learn something new then he will and he will ask for more if he can. With a photographic memory and intelligence like you’d never believe the boy is one to have around if you have a problem you want solving – what he comes up with may not be conventional but that doesn’t mean it won’t work. Fact of the matter is nine times out of ten it will work – he’s very rarely wrong.

Kai winked at Edme as he watched the other Candidate struggle to contain her own amusement. From his own observations of their youngest companion Tymarol would not have understood what everyone was laughing at; he certainly wouldn’t assume it was himself and he was even less likely to understand WHY if Kai tried to explain their reasoning.

“Exactly. Although they have to get into a ball first; once they’re in a ball they’re really strong. It’s the plates on their backs that do it. That’s why Fire Lizards prefer Crawlers – Trundlebugs just hurt their teeth. Don’t they Heist?” He asked the metallic Blue with a grin, the Fire Lizard happy to oblige with a chirp of his own. “Armour! I thought of that too, I’ve been working out what materials would be strongest and wouldn’t be affected by Threadfall but wouldn’t be too heavy to put on or fly with as well. You’re smarter than you look.” Tymarol said simply.

Once again Kai was forcing himself to not laugh. He couldn’t honestly believe the lad had done it again. Was it just women he had this verbal diarrhoea with or was it a general issue? So far Tymarol had insulted Selena in their groundcrew lesson and was now insulting Edme, though Kai knew the lad didn’t mean it that way. Looking over his cup to Edme his ice blue eyes were watering, he gave her a pleading look that begged her to understand how his young friend was a social incompetent while he tried to pull himself together. Tymarol was (as per usual) blissfully unaware of the insult he had just spouted, Kai believed that the lad thought he was paying a compliment but didn’t know how to without being rude first. Putting his free hand to his face he tried desperately not to laugh out loud, he didn’t want to upset Tymarol, poor lad just didn’t have an in built filter for his comments.

“S-standing.” Kai stuttered out as he continued to contain his laughter. “Both. Standing.” He managed, looking away as Tymarol stared at him questioningly.
“Are you ok Kai?” The boy asked him with concern.
“Fine! Fine… eat your breakfast.” He grinned, winking at Edme again. Faranth help them both.

Edme thought I was precious that he’s actually consider amour for the dragons. Then again, he appeared to be a boy who’s mind was always working away somewhere at something. That last comment however, nearly had Edme choking, despite the fact she was neither eating nor drinking anything.

“Well, thank you. I think.” She replied mildly. The look on her face was one of astonishment, which slowly turned to amusement. Especially once Kai started turning the conversation away and bidding the boy to eat his breakfast. Dropping her head, she studied the contents of her klah mug while her shoulders shook both violently and silently.

Once she’d regained control of herself, Ed rejoined the table, propping her mug up be her plate and returning Kai’s wink. Deftly she plucked a piece of fruit of Tymarol’s plate, insults warranted restitution after all, and took a bite of the sweet flesh. Wiping juice from her chin with the back her hand, Edme considered the pair.

“I’m standing as well.” Why she had no idea since the thought petrified her. Yet, she felt a strange sort of pride being able to say such. Dragons didn’t pick just anyone, after all. “I’m Edme, by the way…

“Oh, and don’t forget, you wouldn’t want amour that bitterly cold and brittle between, either.” Tymarol, Ed decided, was a rather amusing companion, if wholly different from most others.

How far away are they?!
Poor poor Tymarol; master of the back handed compliment. He was not a mean spirited boy he was just unaware of the things he said. His oldest brother Ty'men had commented (while Tymarol wasn't listening of course) that his youngest brother's intelligence had taken up so much space in the boy's brain that common sense and tact had been left no room to move in. When the Bluerider had been asked by a friend whether he believed his brother would ever learn either when he grew up Ty'men had sighed heavily and said that while he always hoped Tymarol would he doubted it very highly.

As Edme thanked him (for what Tymarol had no idea) the lad smiled and continued to eat his breakfast. He liked this, sitting with these two. Kai was always nice to him and Edme had been a Runner so that just made her utterly fascinating in the boy's mind. Kai on the other hand had gone purple in the face from trying to stop his laughter; poor Tymarol, the source of Kai's suffering and yet also the source of pure amusement. Faranth help them all when he got a Dragon of his own, he was going to be dangerous.

Kai grinned as Edme took some redfruit from Tymarol's plate but the little lad barely noticed at all as he continued to listen while munching on his own - Heist licking the dripping juices from his boy's fingers whenever Ty put his hand down. "Oh! We didn't do introductions! Kai we didn't tell her our names that's just rude." Tymarol informed his large friend simply.
Once again Kai struggled not to burst into hysterics. How was it the lad saw not introducing themselves as rude but out and out calling Edme stupid wasn't? "Silly us! And indeed rude. Edme we apologise profusely. I am Kai and this is Tymarol, the Blue is of course Heist." The larger Candidate informed her with a wink.

"Yes! Yes... I'll have to think about this a bit more I think... Yes..." Tymarol muttered softly, scowling as he poked at another redfruit, his mind ticking over this problem.
