Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Alan looked at the woman with a hopeless expression. The usually cheerful man was glancing towards the eggs with concern. The girl hadn't moved after she nodded, he had to hope she'd get herself over to the eggs in time...he really didn't want to take on another yet, but he may end up tempted to. Though, maybe one of the others would take on two if it came down to that. He stayed back, pacing and watching, thinking about going over and trying to get the girl to join the group, but the eggs were starting to crack and fracture. He couldn't leave now, he had to be sure that the others already there were positive on what they were to do. Not that he doubted them, after all two of them had their own wards and Kai was an apprentice beastherder, and took care of her runner well from what he'd seen.

Posted ImagePosted Image

The largest egg, with a slight sheen rocked the most, almost tumbling over itself, the lively attempts to break free as two tones flickered and flashed through the missing pieces in the shell as the hatchling moved as much as the space allowed. As it shifted and moved it knocked into the quivering egg beside it. The smaller egg had light green streaks playing across its surface. With the help of the larger egg it started a chip fell away and became the focal point of splintering cracks along its surface.

Intelligent, Vain, and Perceptive

He forced a head and then a back foot out. The rest of the shell giving way to the force of his attempts to uncurl, foot and neck pressing in oppisite directions. Splattering out onto the fabrics. Shaking himself off of most of the egg goo he sat indignantly looking at those around him. He'd think about his selection, wanting to finest looking piece of meat offered. He was a bronze after all. Raising to all fours he awkwardly traversed the lumpy fabrics, looking as airy as one could when just finding their feet on such an awkward landing. A glance over at the other eggs made the hatchling realize he wasn't going to be the only hungry one soon. Picking up his pace he lunged for Varuel, trying his best to gobble down the meat as fast as he could.

The Good Kind of Crazy
Kai collected some meat in her hands for when the eggs hatched, she smiled at Varuel, most of his name was used by his wher, their bond must be very strong… at least that was what she had read at the beastcraft hall about whers and their handlers. Her eyes brightened when she heard the savage voice in her mind, “Well if you hunt you should kill,” Kaivade said with a reasonable tone, after all to hunt was to get food. Though she had heard that this grey could be quite vicious. “Well I’m sure she’s just as pretty hunting as she is sitting over there, if not more so.” She told Varuel and his wher with a smile.

She nodded as he gave her tips, “I did help with the butchering of livestock at the Beastcraft hall, we have whers at the hold that needed the meat as well as the holders, so I don’t think I’m squeamish,” she added that thoughtfully, well she had never felt queasy while butchering but who knew what new things a wher would introduce her to. As for patience? Well training a high strung runner certainly took patience and confidence… but would that be the same as training a wher? Probably not, whers smarter than runners.

Her attention was drawn back to the small clutch of eggs as they began to rock, the largest of the eggs started to rock violently as the little flit inside of it wanted out and now. She watched in fascination as the crack widened and a little bronze flit forced his head and foot out, pushing the egg apart. He was quite handsome with the lighter wings and markings, very regal looking as he seemed to scan the gathered people. She smiled as the bronze lunged for the meat that Varuel had in his hands. Happy for the older man.

With at least one of the eggs rocking in earnest now, Raisa fell back on old habits and allowed herself to become lost in the minute spasms of the largest of the clutch. Her jaw tensed as one egg bowled into another, causing a chain reaction - the big egg spilled a handsomely marked bronze, while the smaller continued to chip away at its shell.

The weyrling took a moment to admire the clumsily hatched bronze, but hesitated in offering a bite for the indignant fellow to snack on. As a result, she was passed over as the fire-lizard made contact with the gruesomely scarred wherhandler. Exhaling a bit more noisily than was necessary, Raisa made a passing attempt at shrugging the whole thing off, while sneaking envious glances in that direction.

But there were more eggs to tend to. Hopefully one would hatch out a clever, biddable specimen for her to train. Little Pain was smart, but absolutely untrainable. The blue did what he wanted, as he wanted. Not even Khorinth had had much luck in coercing the fire-lizard to complete any number of tasks Raisa would ask of him. She'd hope for better luck this time, and would hopefully not get burned.

Had it not been for a wher’s exceptional hearing Varuesk might have missed Tali’s answer. The grey’s curiosity was sated for the moment and with a snort she turned away. Her handler seemed to be getting entangled with these other people and the strange scratching noise by the humming lizard. She did not comprehend ‘hide’, stealth in the hunt perhaps but she did not consider it ‘hiding’. Stalking maybe Varuesk had tried to explain such control but she had never seen a need for it. Prey hid, weak things needed to hide from her. Came at odds then that a person that seemed normal, not particularly weak, chose to hide from others. Did that automatically make that one weak? Something to think about later when her head wasn’t filled with Varuel’s exuberance.

The greyhandler enjoyed the current company, hands full of scraps for a firelizard he continued to listen and chat away. Nodding as Kai replied wincing as she replied to Varuesk. The grey hissed in answer snarling and baring her teeth, Kill for blood. Hunt for hunger. Neither handler nor wher could puzzle out what Kai had meant about hunting for killing. To Varuesk the two were different hunting was for food killing for enemies. Hunting took off the edge but it did not satisfy her thirst. Had she been in the wild that thirst might be settled with territory and driving others off it, here bonded to Varuel she struggled with that innate need. She needed longer patrols and bandit throats. To explain such things to Kai might be unsettling, the grey did happen to be…different than other whers Varuel had dealt with.

He shot Varuesk a stern glare and the older wherling quickly settled, still grumbling but done being defensive. Then turned to Kai with a grin, “Yes I find the snarling only makes that face more endearing. I don’t know much of beastcraft, but from what I’ve heard it’s one of the trades closer to wherhandling. Ah you’ll be fine whers are quite lovable beasts below the wrinkles and blood.” Low growling echoed behind him Varuesk’s lip curling. Love mine. Love kill and run. Hate sit and wait. One eye on the wobbling eggs in front of him Varuel quieted the wher speaking in his head, I know plenty well what you like. I like a good long sleep but got up early for you today. We comprise little lady, learn some patience…

A sharp crack caught hold of the handler’s attention just then. The largest egg having knocked into a smaller one next to it, he watched anxiously as cracks began to widen on the shell. Then a head and a foot popped loose and it was easy to see why the egg had been so large! A few moments later and the rest of the shell gave way the young bronze shaking off the remains of his egg. What a handsome creature, green nearly grey-hued and gleaming in the soft light. Varuel grinned, standing at the ready should the firelizard wander his way. He nearly laughed as the creature strode like some little lord across the fabric.

For a moment the creature glanced at his siblings then somehow seeming to move more urgently the hatchling lunged towards him. Instincts always high Varuel nearly snatched his hand away that movement had looked a lot like an attack but somehow he remembered to remain still, especially if he wanted to bond with the thing. It latched onto his hand tiny claws heedless of the tough flesh the dug into as he gorged on the meat within Varuel’s palm. The pinpricks from the firelizard’s claws pained him, but he had dealt with worse. Besides the way the thing latched on and attacked the meal could only be described as adorable, to Varuel at least.

The grey wher stood as soon as she felt the trickle of pain from her handler eyes flashing red and muscles tensing for whatever the danger might be. Her long claws scratched at the ground below her, ready to lunge at a moment’s notice. As the wher went on high alert Varuel watched the firelizard finish the morsel’s he held. The tiny creature didn’t seem satisfied and immediately looked up at Varuel. Chirping to demand more meat as a familiar sensation hit the handler’s head. Weaker than it had been with Varuesk, but he knew impression. The grey wher did not and it stunned her leaving her confused and angry. What… she began and then felt that her handler might be hungry, much hungrier than he had been before.

Impression made Varuel honed in on Varuesk finally feeling her anxiousness and frustration over the pain her handler had felt and now this other odd sensation. Only one thing to do now. Smiling Varuel swept away from the fabric, gnarled hands cradling the hatchling. Varuesk’s gaze narrowed in on the tiny thing and she growled as soon as she spotted it. Pests. Why hurt mine. Still growling she hunched low as her handler approached with beast in hand. “Oh he didn’t mean to hurt me.” She wouldn’t hurt the thing while it was in his hands, and he felt confident in his ability to keep her well in hand these days, “Little lady, meet your new brother, or well friend at least.”

It clicked then, just why her handler had been so excited and what he had done. She had seen the little ones before watched as they buzzed around particular heads and perched on shoulders. She had nearly eaten one that came too close to her kill before. No share. Varuel had been worried about this. The grey wher put her nose to the firelizard and sniffed. The hatchling did though curiosity and not anger lit his eyes. “He’s here to help me out.” Varuesk drew back as the firelizard chirped at her the little creature sat and preened, had it just bowed it’s head to greet her? Varuesk help Varuel. No need. He fixed her with a glare, but softened his glance as she stiffened. Holding the firelizard in one hand he stretched out the other to scratch her head. “Little lady, remember yours trying to fight with others? How difficult it is to see?” Varuesk snorted quickly sending her handler images proving she was quite ready for the task. Varuel smiled in answer, “Yes and you’re quite good at it, but you will need to focus on your own battles as well. He will help us be stronger.”

No need. Strongest. She retorted but Varuel could feel her mind swaying towards the idea. She remembered some practice fights and knew her handler’s weakness better than anyone if this little one could help protect her handler, then maybe she wouldn’t eat it. Varuel just waited for her to come to the conclusion herself, she was smart and would see reason. It happened slowly, but she had stopped growling a while ago, and sat down now. Fine. She curled up on the ground now, eyes looking at her handler and ignoring the firelizard, If help mine can stay. But hurt and I eat.

Varuel smiled, feeling quite triumphant, he could already tell the bronze had a quick mind and wouldn’t be much of a biter. He offered the firelizard more scraps, breathing a sigh of relief as Varuesk accepted the creature. The tiny bronze eagerly took the offered food snapping up the first few bits, but then he looked towards the grey wher, and back to the food he held, then back to the wher. Then with a chirp he glided off of Varuel’s hand and landed gently in front of Varuesk’s head. She snarled at first, but the firelizard simply chirped and shoved the scraps at the whers mouth. He was full now and he hadn’t seen her eat. Varuel held his breath, and Varuesk seemed to measure up the tiny creature, she could easily snap up the firelizard and scraps whole. But with a rumble she extended her head and gently snapped up the tiny bits offered by the bronze. It wasn’t a mouthful, but the gesture spoke volumes and Varuel’s mood immediately softened. She didn’t say anything but the firelizard chattered happily and clambered back up Varuel, obviously pleased with himself.

With that the handler gave his wher a scratch and the rest of the bits he held. Then quickly went to go rejoin the group to see what these other folks might impress. The bronze seemed just as eager sharp eyes watching his brethren’s struggle.

Alan watched the newly bonded man and firelizard with the wher, torn between the hatching and the introduction. Worried about what the already bonded pair would face with another creature in with them. Knowing the grey was a wherling still, and of course being a grey left many wondering about how she would react to having to give up some possession over her handler. With the small display the firelizard did with the wher it made him more confident in the end result, though he didn't think he'd ask the handler if he'd take another. Alan couldn't have overheard their conversation but what he could tell with eyes and body language was enough to show that another firelizard, at least for a while, wasn't going to be the best idea for not only wherling and firelizard but the handler as well.

Posted ImagePosted Image

The egg continued to splinter and shake, and it wasn't alone in having bits fall away from its shell. Another egg with a muddled green patches had pieces missing. Both showing two shades of green writhing around in the shells. The one bumped into chipping was splintering into fine cracks all over its surface. The darker toned egg had a long creeping line of a crack from the firelizard within trying to pry its way out.

A tiny front foot made it out and tried to get the cracked suface to crumble. As the egg finally broke away from the vibrantly colored firelizard fell onto the clothes, obviously struggling with a back leg and wing trapped in egg goo. It cried out and battled with the goo that refused to release her. Falling in a small panting heap, hungry and exhausted, eyes whirling in distress as it tried to use only three legs without the support of a wing for balance in getting to the nearest food being offered, at the end of Kai's hand.

Kai watched as Varuel introduced the new firelizard to his wher, but her attention was soon returned to the hatching eggs. The small egg with the bright green stripes, the one that had been hit by the bronze’s egg was splintering and shaking. The flash of bright green that she could see thought the cracks hinted at the color of the flit within. When the tiny green pushed first her foot out then used it to crumble the egg around her. Kai was amazed by the brilliance of the little flit, her colors so bright and vibrant.

When she collapsed to the clothes with a wing and leg still trapped in egg goo Kai knelt down to help the poor thing, she held her hand with the small meat chunks out to the small creature letting her snatch the chunks from her palm as the girl then used the clothes around the little green to clean the goo from her trapped wing and leg. With her limbs now free the little green clung onto her hand fitting perfectly in the palm of Kai’s hand as she cleaned the last remains of blood from the girls’ hand.

The little green rubbed her head affectionately against the girl’s thumb, before giving a pitiful creel. Kai quickly got more meat for the little green, who was busy both eating and confessing love in warbles and creels. The eyes that turned up to her no longer held the distress that was there before, now they only held love. Something happened in her mind, it felt like something small that she hadn’t known was empty, filled. Well she had heard that the impression that firelizards gave was not as strong as with hers or even with dragons, bit it was there. Kai smiled down at the green. What to name the adorable creature?

Kai smiled at her, “Well little Ama,” she said to the little green, “we’re going to have fun,” Ama warbled happily and held onto Kai’s thumb, her belly extended with the amount of meat she had eaten. She was sleepy now and curled up in Kai’s palm.

Two eggs rocked in tandem now, both shells flaking away to reveal green bodies squirming within. Teases, Raisa thought as she shuffled her handful of bloody scraps from one stained palm to the other, resisting the temptation to wipe bloody smears off on her pants. Not difficult, considering the small egg with the bright splash of green streaking its shell had finally discharged its equally bright occupant. The little green was having difficulties, and its anxious cries made Raisa grimace before she flopped into Kai's possession.

The handler was efficient with dispatching the sources of the little fire-lizard's displeasure and pain, and she soon had her quieted which earned a hoarse "congratulations" from the brown weyrling before her eyes returned to the few remaining eggs. Good. It was good to see someone who knew what they were doing.

Raisa hadn't been nearly as comfortable handling Little Pain, at first. She'd do better this time. Little Pain has been well taken care of. There was Khorinth, as always, to refute. Raisa's stony countenance warmed a little at her brown's encouragement. Always had to get a last word in...

Tali was glad when the grey wher looked away from her. It made her nervous to have its attention on her. Having heard all the good and bad rumors about the new wher breeds, like how the grey was a vicious little thing...Shaking her head she moved a little closer as the eggs finally started hatching. Gero and Copo trilling and humming in encouragement to the little hatchlings and they broke from their shells. Their owner took some of the meat that was available and snaked her way closer. Still trying not to direct any attention her way but starting to feel a little more excited about possibly getting a new flit. Her two were already very helpful and good companions. So one more couldn't hurt right?

Standing there and watching the bronze that hatched she managed a small smile and her eyes widened seeing the brightly colored green. It was stunning...Its new owner was lucky indeed. She wondered what was going to hatch next from the lot. And if one of them would find their way to her...

The muddled egg shuddered heavily, while a slightly light tan hue to it seemed to struggle to catch up to the others. Proving it wasn't a dud. Small body parts started to poke and prod their ways out as the tiny things started to emerge. A green and a brown trying to break into the world in following their green sister and bronze brother.

Posted Image
She's friendly, prying, almost invasive/rude.

The green managed to get out of her shell, breaking through with pushing her forehead into one chipped area she managed to bring her head, then her body out of the egg. The shell crumbling as she pressed more and more of her body out. Once freed of the confines she shook egg goo from her body and tried to find her feet. Looking up, her eyes fell on the first piece of meat that caught her attention. Awkwardly lunging towards it. Loosing her balance she managed to knock into Raisa's arm before scrambling back to get to her first meal. Eating it greedily.

Ecouraging, Supportive and Extrovert

He had gotten his back legs and tail out, squirming his rear as he tried to get the rest of himself out. Small cries coming from inside the shell, wriggling his way out into the world backwards. Flopping onto his rear as he managed to remove himself fully. Sneezing up egg goo from his tiny nostrils. The momentum sending him lolling back. Seeing his sibling eating meat he rolled till he was facing the two women who were still by the small hatching. Seeing one piece of meat offered out freely he shrilled and awkwardly bounded towards it. Ready for his belly to be filled.

The muddled green was joined by its plainly shelled neighbor in the last hatching throes, but it was the green that broke shell first. With an inelegant headbutt no less; as the slimy hatchling worked to get her legs underneath her, Raisa admired the soft greens in opposition to Kai’s bright companion. She wasn’t quite what the weyrling had been hoping for, but Raisa relented quickly enough once the wobbly green made a bee-line for her meat, after knocking into her arm in her greedy haste.

A green, then. She was much too ravenous, and then drowsy from a little over-stuffing, for Raisa to get a good feel for her personality, but as the baby fetched up against the side of the brown weyrling’s neck with a squeaky chirp of satisfaction the woman stroked her fat-bellied baby affectionately. “Thanks.” Laconic as always, Raisa nevertheless expressed her gratitude for Alan’s generosity, nodding significantly in the crafter’s direction before turning to leave. Little Pain preceded her in that, the blue having already blinked himself Between to secure his favorite sleeping spot for the night.

I don’t think she’s a Little Menace. Khorinth chimed in from the sidelines, fairly humming with happiness at the outcome. I’ll think of something.
