Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Alan had been busy, with both the year end gather that was quickly followed by the latest dragon hatching. All the activity left him in a rush with dealing with the current beasts in his care, the new filly he'd gotten, as well as others brought in by trader and guests. It was a trader, and a rather successful one by the look of him, who brought in a hurt runner. The poor beast had a rather nasty gash in its side, a slight infection set in as well. Seeing to the infection and the open wound Alan did his best to get the runnerbeast ready for when the man was ready to leave. The trader, having been pleased with the work on his prized mare had left Alan gifted with four firelizard eggs from his gold's clutch.

For Alan the 'gift' was a slight burden. Not only did he have the young filly to train and work with along with his other personal creatures, including his clingy young brown firelizard Cooper. He knew he'd have to be rid of them soon just to keep from burdening himself with ever more work.

Settling in the night hearth with the eggs bundled up in some nice warm sand and garments. Brown Cooper peeking over at the eggs under Alan's cautious gaze, absently rubbing the ears of his Canine Einar, hoping he'd not have a staff member come in up in arms about him bringing his canine in, poor Einar had been banned from the dining hall back in their home hold.

The trader had warned that they were close to hatching but Alan hadn't been told how close. A rather big surprise when the little brown started to hum. Jerking his good eye to the eggs and saw at least one of them quivering he got up and took strides towards the hall way. Giving a sharp whistle, Einar joining in with a couple barks. Trying to get attentions of anyone who could potentially impress the little ones. A quick word to one of the kitchen staff who'd heard and rushed over to see what the commotion was about rushed off to fetch some meat. Alan turning back to watch over the eggs and hopefully direct people to the tiny hatching of the four eggs in his possession.

Kai rubbed her eyes sleepily. It had been a long day at working in the fields with several of the runners, and with Lossy... the mare had been overly difficult and had taken a lot of the young woman's concentration to put her through her paces. She decided to stop by the Weyr's Dinning Hall since it would be the most likely to have something for a tired girl to munch on before she turned in for the night. She was nearly to the hall when she heard a shrill whistle and the bark of a canine. What could that be about?

She walked into the dining hall and saw a familiar silhouette near the hearth, “Good evening Journeyman Alan,” the senior apprentice stated, straightening a little after all he was more senior than her in the Beastcraft. “Is there something going on?” she asked looking toward the hearth at the brown firelizard that was standing above a pile of sand and garments… her tired mind was a little slow. She realized how show when the realization that there were four firelizard eggs and the brown flit was humming.

They had just begun their early rounds. Varuel could still feel the sleep in his eyes such early 'mornings' never suited him. He would prefer waiting for dark to settle in permanently before heading out, but the life of a wherhandler was not one of comfort. Waking before sunset he had to put Varuesk's goggles on for the first part of their shift. Then off to walk around the hold and weyr. The rumors of bandits still weighed heavily on the troop and vigilance had always been important. At least they trusted him and the grey enough for this small task. Not that he enjoyed it, but having that trust was nice. Yawning as the passed the entrance to the lower caverns the wherhandler couldn't help but smell the remnant smells of dinner.

That or Varuesk had picked it up and passed it along to him. Tricky wher liked to do that without him knowing sometimes. Smell something good, share the sensation with Varuel, and before you knew it they would both have full bellies. His footsteps were already headed into the caverns now. It had never been difficult to sway him towards getting a meal. If they could find one at this hour. Varuesk grunted in agreement. Despite hunting on her own she enjoyed the treats found in these halls. Hopefully she wouldn't be thrown out. She had grown...quite large. "No trouble now little lady, you here? Or you won't get a snack until our first round."

Varuesk never trouble. Mine trouble. Varuel grinned at her mindvoice ringing in his head. Even if she did accuse him he could feel the affection lingering there. Approaching the dining hall now Varuesk went stiff, lip curling and snarling. A moment later a shrill whistle sounded and a canine took to barking. Noisy. She snarled wings bristling as the sent of the creature filled her nostrils. Varuesk knew that tone, knew that stance. You will not stop the noise by stepping on him. Or eating him. The young wher snapped, tail flicking in annoyance. She new the scent of canine, had seen them before. Tiny things, weak things, prey in her eyes, but so loud so annoying. Settle or no snack.

Furry one snack. Make shut up. Varuesk complained but her stance relaxed, wings falling and muscles loosening. Varuel put a hand on her shoulder, judging eye on her. "Don't go near the canine, or you don't get any dinner tonight." The grey snorted hot air blasting in Varuel's face as she turned to stare at him. Fine. You make shut up. Or sit on you. Not an empty threat, but thankfully the canine didn't keep up it's barking. It was then in that moment of quiet that Varuel heard a distinct humming sound. He had heard that firelizards hummed at hatchings...could it be? One of those would be incredibly useful. A second set of eyes! Why he needed one! Couldn't afford to buy though and the hatching's at the weyr always seemed to happen during the day. "Varuesk, quickly we're going to make a new friend."

She growled in answer, not pleased with this wave of excitement from her handler and wary about his plans. As they entered the dining hall Varuel quickly spotted the beastcrafter and a strange bundle. Not to mention the brown firelizard humming over the event. "Sit here, I'll be back." Varuesk snorted, but sat down forcefully, eyeing the brown firelizard with a glare. Drawing near the beastcrafter with a grin Varuel took a peek at the bundle, "You have eggs lad? They hatching? Up for grabs perhaps?" Normally he wasn't one to get excited but the chance to bond with a firelizard could very well mean life and death for Varuel. Perhaps he though a little too dramatically but after his fight with Jerund he had come to realize just how big a handicap being blind in one eye was. But with a firelizard feeding him images of the entire field? Well that would fix everything! Varuesk could focus on her fighting and not babysitting him. So his excitement at even the prospect was quite palpable. Even if Varuesk did not approve, her doom and gloom hanging around the entrance to the hall.

Raisa was well on her way to retiring for the night when an unfamiliar hand grabbed her in the hall. It took an act of tremendous will-power for the brown weyrling not to retaliate with violence, though she eyed the nervous youngster with a dark look as he hastily relayed his message. Eggs were hatching at the night hearth, he'd been told to get the message out.

Little Pain, who had been hitching a ride on the woman's broad shoulder, was now wheeling overhead and balefully hissing at the lad who now looked as though he very much regretted having waylaid the weyrling at all. "Jus' thought ya might wanna know, seein' as you have one." He scurried off not long after mumbling that last bit of information, leaving Raisa to tug irritably at her sleeve and look up at the still circling blue. "Like I need another one of you menaces."

You can name the next one Little Menace. Khorinth chose then to inject a little levity and humor, the brown fully confident that he'd soon have another cousin to share his bed at night. "'m not getting you a pet, Khor." And yet she was stalled in the middle of the hallway, glancing furtively over one shoulder. It was decided once Little Pain took off, assumedly in hunt of these hatchlings.

They arrived at the night hearth a few moments later, Little Pain ferreting himself away in some dark crevice to attend in private. Raisa's eyes swept over the others assembled - none of them familiar faces, before arrested by the sight of the gray wher sitting not far away. ...she'd never seen one that color before.

It took some effort to focus back on Alan. "Someone told me eggs were hatching."

Once again a successful escape from the clutches of the angry cook at the Hold kitchen. She didn't see what the big deal was. The bread she took had been old and a bit stale. No mold thankfully. So what was the problem of her taking it? No one else was going to eat it right? Right. Gero and Copo did a marvelous job distracting the cook with knocking over all those pots and pans. The moment their eyes were off her she bolted. Basket of stale bread and a couple of meatrolls for good measure. Her flits rejoined her somewhere between the Hold and the Weyr. Tali knew it was always better to get away from the place for a while after upsetting the cooks. You'd be surprised how far they'd go to find you and make you scrub and peel things till your fingers were bleeding.

Copo on one shoulder chirruping at Gero on the other shoulder as he kept nibbling at whatever piece of bread Tali had up to her mouth. Taking large chunks out at a time. His sister finally moved her tail to wrap around his and yanked. Gero yelped and hissed at the green but with an unhappy growl he stopped his actions. Not fair...he was HUNGRY! Course, he was always hungry. A blue had to keep up his strength ya know? Tali didn't mind. She was just glad she was able to snatch something up before it was all gone.

The little group found themselves at the Weyrbowl soon and looked around. As usual the night was a lot quiet there at the Weyr. Just how she liked it. But she could see some were out and about. Raising a brow she watched them head for the Lower Caverns. Probably should stay away from there. If there was something going on she didn't want to be stuck in a crowd. Just as she was about to just walk the other way she could hear Copo and Gero start to let out a soft hum.

"Oh...? Is that what is going on...Alright. Maybe a peek. Yes just a little peek. Then we go. Sound good?" The flits chirped in response and she just nodded her head. Her feet then took her toward the Caverns and toward the sound of voices. Holding her basket of food close to herself as she peeked around the door opening into the Dining Hall. Gero and Copo started humming again and she bit her lip before slowly slipping inside. Spotting the Wherhandler in the little group she sucked in a breath and tried to stay as invisible as she could. Not that she had a problem with wherhandlers or anything. Just that she didn't want someone that might know who she was spotting her and forcing her to leave.

He ran his hands through his hair, obviously rather distressed with the sudden events unfolding. He didn't have to wait to long after his whistle and Einar's barks. The first to come in was a girl, Kai, oh thank faranth. He rushed over and gently tugged her over to the eggs. "I can't impress them, not with the new runner and Cooper still being so young. PLEASE tell me you can take one if not more..." He kept glancing to the doorway, watching for more potential people to take the hatchlings and the woman with the food, hoping she'd take one if no one else would come along in time.

As a handler and his wher came in as well Alan's distressed look seemed to brighten a bit more. "Yes! We'll have some meat here soon. Just...come, come." He waved frantically for the new man to hurry over to join Kai. He ignored Einar's sitting out of the way full alert on the grey wher, who'd had a couple snapped glances from Alan already. The loyal canine watching that the wherling didn't make a move towards the eggs ready to try and herd her away with a distraction if he had to. The poor canine was scared, his hackles raised but he wasn't the type to abandon what he thought was his current ward. Least of all his almost constant companion Cooper.

A third person came in, just as the kitchen woman returned with a fair amount of meat on the tray, as if that wasn't confirmation enough for the arriving weyrling. Alan starting to sound like a broken record "Grab some meat...quickly!" He eyed the eggs as the started to quiver and twitch in the sandy garments.

He looked at the staff member and nodded to her. "You'll take one as well?" She flushed and declined, leaving the journeyman looking at the eggs. Running his fingers through his hair. One more egg left... Thats when he saw her. His grey eyes pinned on her and he waved her over frantically. "Tell me you'll take one! Please we've got three people and four eggs."

The Good Kind of Crazy
She wasn’t as sleepy as she had been when she had approached the night hearth now. A hatching of firelizards? And she could have one? Excitement filled her, she had come to the Weyr and Hold hopefully be a Wher candidate, but to get a firelizard as well? That was more than she had hoped for. “I can take one,” She reassured Alan, she had seen his new filly, and she was quite the handful. Much like her Lossy had been. So she stood next to the hearth where the four eggs rested. Wondering how many others would come, while she wanted a firelizard… more than one sounded like it would be hectic.

When someone else walked into the room and Alan ushered them over, Kai looked over at him, then at the grey wher standing at the entrance. A Wherhandler! She hadn’t had much chance to talk with the handlers, they worked at night and she during the day. “Hello,” she said, “I’m Kaivade. Is that your wher? She’s very pretty.” She was excited and that caused her to babble a little. “I’m a wher candidate, can you give me any tips?” The scar that ran down the side of his face intimidated her a little, but she wasn’t worried. She gave the woman that arrived next a bright smile, hoping they shared her excitement. She didn’t quite notice the last girl until Journeyman Alan spotted her and called her over to the group.

At Alan's urging, Raisa crossed over to the freshly arrived platter of meat. Selecting a few of the choicest bits, she tamped down the last bit of reservation her conscience had to offer and crossed over to the twitching eggs. Kai's smile put the brown weyrling off guard, and Raisa's face pinked a little in response as she gave a feeble little cough in response, making a point of clearing her throat loudly enough to add some credence to her avoidance in making a response.

Luckily, Kai seemed to be more interested in the grizzled wherhandler. Raisa's eyes were similarly drawn in that direction. Riders and Handlers operated on starkly different schedules, and they were housed in entirely separate compounds of this whole Vaioa complex. And that gray was a fascinating, albeit disturbing, anomaly.

The fourth and final member of this motley clan went unnoticed, at least until she was motioned over by Alan. Raisa eyed the stranger for a moment, surprised at first by the brilliance of her red hair - before realization had sunk in and she hastily turned away. No, another girl. Phew. ...this would have been difficult to explain.

Varuesk, normally outgoing, found it very difficult to sit still at the entrance. The threat of no snack and possibly no dinner hung heavily though and she knew her Varuel would be upset if she started anything. That would be more painful than an empty stomach. Tail flicking irritably and eyes blinking against the dim light in the kitchens she zeroed in on Einar. She did not trust the furry things, especially so near her handler. Red eyes glowing as she snarled in warning, thing could protect his things, but if it bothered hers that would be the end of it. She was smart enough to note the creature’s defensive stance and possibly fear in its. If anything it made her smug to see such a reaction. Furred one should be scared, they should all be wary. Enough bluster, you know better than to hurt anyone in hold or weyr.

They no know. The will respect. Footsteps and the scent of another firelizard and person alerted the wher. Head turning to watch as Raisa strode into the room. Varuesk did not snarl anymore, but her pointed glare met the brown wherling’s eyes. Smells. Of lizard…but not lizard. She noted warily to Varuel, come to think of it she had caught that scent on others. Something like a wher, like firelizard, but different. Dragon, the one’s that fly and flame. Varuesk huffed, she had seen such creatures before and did not like admitting that they were bigger. Something much quieter approached now but hiding scent is always difficult and the wher quickly noted the next one to approach.

This one felt nervous. Moved shyly, like it tried to hide, and that made Varuesk narrow in on her. Eyes calming to a bluish haze thanks to Varuel, but still wary of those gathered and annoyed by the canine. But she listened, the long months of training with Varuel instilling understanding and cooperation. Even if she didn’t like it. She had expected a snack by now and a good run on patrol. Not noisy humming firelizards and loud furry things. If she wasn’t allowed to inspect the curiosities in the room she wanted to be elsewhere. Having a quiet fit she slumped to the floor, hulk causing a slight tremble nearby. Varuel ignored her broodiness. Sitting still was difficult for both of them, but they couldn’t go running off when there was the possibility of a new friend at hand. Eyes wide open she remained alert, but nothing here caused her fear or alarm. Varuel could handle these without her.

The handler was in much better spirits than his companion and couldn’t help but give Alan a hearty slap to the back. “Wonderful lad! Let’s get on with it then!” Grinning from ear to ear, scar twisting his smile to a sneer he followed the beast crafter. Varuel happened to be fond of canines, had met a few with the caravans he traveled with but Varuesk’s mood made him steer clear of any greeting for the creature. “Quite generous of you to share such a brood, expensive critters these can be.” He would have bought one already had he the marks for it, but he still owed the hold a good deal for Varuesk, and a healer not far away still pestered him.

Smiling and looking to makeshift nest he did not expect the greeting from yet another beast crafter, this one an apprentice. But he nodded pleasantly at her greeting. Her stream of questions making him beam. Hearing she was a wher candidate made his brow rise, arms crossing, “Oh a wher candidate then?” Truth be told he had never had much contact with other wherhandlers, or those looking to get a wher, but he couldn’t turn down one that had complimented his little lady. “Name’s Varuel lass, and yep that’s my little lady, Varuesk brooding over there.” The grey wher snorted having listened to the girl’s words, Varuesk fierce, strong, she chose pretty? The handler laughed at that, “She thanks you for your compliment, proud thing she is. Rather be running and hunting then waiting here for me.”

Rather be killing. Varuesk spoke to both Kaivade and her handler then. If Varuel would mince her words she would make her thoughts known. Varuel couldn’t help but laugh again, his mirth over the hatching clear. “Ripping flesh from muscle and tendon from the bone of a bitran oh yes little lady I know your favorite.” He said casting a wry grin to the wher, the turned back to Kaivade, “Tips lass? Get a strong stomach and plenty of patience. Confidence and a powerful will won’t hurt ya either.” He spoke loud enough to be overheard by all. Quite happy to talk about wherhandling while they awaited the little firelizards.

Varuesk seemed to hone in on the quiet one. Something in her movements striking curiosity in the grey wher. Eyes following Tali’s movements as she reached out to the girl, Others speak. You quiet.

So much commotion. Gero and Copo seemed to be enjoying it. Humming in her ears and watching everyone that was already there. Both taking off soon to get a closer look at the eggs that were about to hatch. She chose to just stay back where she was and observe. No point getting in the way right? Right. But when the man looked at her and waved her toward the lot she froze and didn't know what to do. He wanted her to have one? Really? Well...She just nodded to the man but didn't move to get closer yet. Tali just wasn't sure about it. Now that they knew they might be getting a new sibling her two flits started humming and chirping excitedly. As if trying to encourage the little ones to hatch faster.

Tali thought she was in the clear to just sit back out of the way once she responded to the guy. But apparently she got the attention of someone she hadn't expected. At first she wasn't sure if she had actually heard it or if it was her own mind playing tricks on her. Looking toward the source she stared at the gray wher in surprise. Did she respond? Or could she just pretend she didn't hear? Probably not a good idea. The grey looked like she could bite her in half. After a few more seconds of thought she responded in a quiet voice with a cautious tone. "I prefer being quiet. Easier to hide."
