Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese was having a difficult time understanding why anyone would want to threadfight. 'Mopping up' didn't sound much fun, either; in fact it sounded like what she already did, in the Infirmary.

She was a bit taken aback with Rhias's flippant remarks about death. "Well, yes, but I guess it'd be preferable to avoid," Aniese said carefully. She'd only considered death once in her life, and even then, it had not so much been a desire to die as much as a loss of a will to live. Even now, when she was most uncertain about her future, she felt fairly certain that she'd want to continue living. Life in the Lower Caverns was not bad enough to warrant a death wish, or so she thought.

"I... don't know." She had a small smile for Rhias's last comment. "I'm not... I don't think I'm very good at anything. Well, I'm organized," she amended. "I guess the Lower Caverns is a good place for me. Seems I'm best suited for taking stock of tithes." She smiled wanly. It was not a promising future. But it was better than being Holdless.

"You have a glorious future ahead of you," Rhias said solemnly. "But hey! Maybe you could take over Rayna's job one day. Lord knows that woman wouldn't mind retiring early with the way we work her to the bone. And the records room scribes always need help if you've got any booklearning in you."

But it all sounded so bloody boring! Rhias wasn't sure how Aniese could be content with a life of sure things, a life where she knew what was around every corner with no surprises or danger at all. It seemed like just the sort of complacency that would drive Rhias absolutely mad in no time at all. She was suddenly gladder than ever that she took every opportunity she could to Stand on the sands. The candidate was certain if she had nothing but a life of drudgery to look forward to, she'd lose her marbles.

Jays, I better Impress!

"Suppose there's something to be said for a steady easy life. You just let the rest of us take care of things and make sure there's food in our stores and you won't want for anything. Can't say I really blame you if you're not the fighting type."

Aniese sighed and picked at a worn spot on the counter. It wasn't that she wanted a fully predicable and boring life, it was just... She didn't want a life full of danger and risk. Some security was important, rather than always living hand-to-mouth and never even knowing if you'd be alive the next day. True, some risk was important too... Trying new things, taking some adventures, and keeping life interesting. But risking one's life didn't sound like the fest sense of adventure to her.

"Yeah, I guess I'll be lucky if I end up Headwoman," Aniese said with a small laugh. She'd met B'ran and her interest in the records and scribes had been more intense than she felt comfortable describing. She'd always liked reading and learning...

...but her future probably didn't lay in that direction anyway. At any rate, she had current responsibilities that meant staying busy in the Lower Caverns.

"Sometimes a steady life can be a comfort," Aniese murmured. "But I bet you'd be much better in the fast-paced life of a rider." She smiled apologetically and glanced at the notch in the wall. It was almost the end of chores, and she'd probably have to report in to Rayna soon.

((I'm gonna wrap this up, hope that's ok?))

Rhias chanced a glance outside and saw the Dining Hall filling up with people. Soon it would be far too busy in the kitchens to get any cleaning done and she could feel her stomach rumbling at the thought of a lunch break. Perhaps a nice nap in the sun before she was dragged off to help out in the infirmary or muck out runnerbeast stalls. She whistled Jo to her shoulder and turned her attention back to Aniese.

"Well as long as we're both happy in the places we've chosen for ourselves, all is well. Though if I don't Impress in the next three turns or so I'll be working right alongside you for the rest of my boring days. Thanks for making this bearable, girlie. I'm off to stuff my gut before I'm forced off to some other awful chore. Don't be a stranger!"

The candidate waved over her shoulder as she strode from the room. Her mind was on egg shells and a possibly bleak future, but also of a girl who could perhaps do with just a smidgen more ambition for herself.
