Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese chuckled drily. "Yes, the idiot Weyrleader." Not that T'ech had been an idiot. After all, he had gotten the Weyr back on regular tithing status with Big Bay, and Keroon, and the smaller Holds that had also been withholding tithes. No idiot could have done that, not with Sien leading the charge. But Aniese would never forget his words when he had confronted Sien.

She had been so dismissive. She had not mentioned Aniese by name. "Keep the girl."

And T'ech hadn't given Aniese the dignity of accepting that ultimatum. The stopped tailfork had refused. "You are in no position to negotiate with me." Her vision hazed just remembering. Rhyssone had given her a choice, but Aniese had not wanted a choice. She had never wanted to admit then, an exile of her Hold, that she would choose to remain an exile rather than return in disgrace, admitting that she had lost her bid to succession.

T'ech had probably done the right thing. He and Rhyssone had given her a choice. But Aniese was still faintly smoldering about that blow to her dignity. It had, in a sense, been easy at first. 'I've been exiled to the Weyr. I don't want to be here.' That had been the truth, and she had been able to maintain that appearance for a time... But then she had begun to like the Weyr, which she had been so set against at first. Admitting that she chose to stay was akin to admitting that she had been wrong about the Weyr.

Which, she had been.

Though she could not say that she loved the Weyr the way she had once loved Big Bay, she was uniquely grateful for it, and had a keen awareness of it that she'd lacked throughout her childhood. And though T'ech and Rhyssone had never forced her to vocalize her choice and admit that she was wrong, to Aniese, it still stung.

She'd since been humbled and shed some of her pride, of course. But at the time it had been a big deal.

Resent T'ech, yes. But idiot? Hardly.

"I know there is a harper here who could perform the ceremony. Are you saying there is absolutely no handfasting?" Aniese's eyes grew wide. She'd thought it happened, but that it was rarer than in Holds and Halls. To not have any seemed... boggling. On the one hand, Aniese hadn't changed in one regard. She remained fiercely independent. No man would claim her as property. But on the other hand... "Isn't it... well..." She couldn't argue for the benefits of marriage, not when she herself was so adamantly opposed. But just for herself. Dimmer girls, well, they might be better off married to a man and kept out of worse trouble. "I know that Flights mean everyone's kind of... looser about their morals. But isn't marriage still a viable way to protect the weak-minded?" She pursed her lips, uncertain.

"I have never heard of anyone getting married in a Weyr," Rhias confirmed. "Maybe it happens? But I doubt very often at all. Most weyrfolk are mature enough to handle their own relationships without some stuffy old harper spouting off nonsense about 'true love' and 'forever'. Life's too short to tie yourself down like that, I think."

The way Aniese talked about marriage and morals stunk to high heaven of a life of privilege, the candidate thought. She didn't know enough about the other girl's past to confirm but she had a hunch she was correct anyways. "Hey now, I wouldn't say we have less morals. Dragonriders put their lives on the line every day to protect everyone else's asses. Doesn't get much more moral than that, if you ask me."

She wiped soap off her cheek and continued prattling on in her own chipper way. "I'm not sure what you mean by "weak-minded". We weyrfolk take care of our own. There's no need to get married to 'protect' yourself if you've got the backing of a Weyr behind you. Anyone that wants to settle down and be pampered by some man is better off wandering across the way to the Hold and living there instead."

Aniese's eyes flickered closed briefly as she realized what she had just said. Shells, girl, have you learned nothing since you got tossed out of Big Bay? She took a shaky breath and smiled brightly, looking over her shoulder at Rhias. "Sorry, that's not... Well, that wasn't what I meant." Her shoulders slumped and she stared down at the dough before reaching for the pans nearby and preparing to line them. "I know that dragonriders are good people. I mean... Vaioa gave me a home when my own parents wouldn't." She mashed the dough savagely into the bottom of the pan. "So I didn't mean to sound... like I think the Weyr is a bad place."

That didn't change the fact that Aniese looked down on casual sex, but, she admitted, the Weyr wasn't an immoral den after all. She'd been here for over a turn and not had to compromise her morals. And there were Holders who had less morals, too.

She continued mashing the dough in a quietly furious way. "I guess I just meant, not everyone paid attention to their Harper when they were young... and sometimes there's just some... really stupid people out there. In the Hold they can be squirreled away and left under some sort of supervision, but in the Weyr... Well, I don't know. It seems like it is such an efficient place that they wouldn't have time to coddle all the dimglows. Where do they usually end up?" Her irritation had given way to frank curiosity. She supposed that some of the numbskulls ended up in the Lower Caverns. She gulped, feeling suddenly self-conscious.

Whoaaa touchy subject.

Rhias flicked a bit of soap playfully at the other girl in a flippant gesture that hopefully conveyed how unbothered by Aniese's tone she was. There wasn't much that got her riled up and a bit of old Holder tendencies clinging to someone weren't likely to set her off. "Oh don't worry, you haven't ruffled my feathers at all, hun. Pretty much anything I have to say you'll find out eventually if you live here long enough."

She laughed cheerily, plowing through the last bit of dishes with gusto. Aniese sure was making chores far more interesting than they usually were. "So you're asking me where we keep our idiots, did I hear that right?" She laughed harder, shaking her head in delight.

"Well most end up drudges and the Headwoman keeps an eye on them. Sometimes we get really unlucky and a dragon will single one out. I suppose Thread takes care of the majority of moronic dragonriders. But one will slip through the cracks occasionally and stupid up the place."

Aniese twitched when the soap landed on her cheek and swiped it off, throwing Rhias a scared look and relaxing when the candidate seemed genuinely unbothered. She took the pans to the nearby hearth and slid them over the coals while listening.

"...Yeah, uh, where you keep the idiots," Aniese echoed, feeling inherently guilty but thinking of her younger siblings. Where would some of them end up, if they didn't have the potential of an advantageous marriage to give them worth?

"Oh." Aniese managed a small smile. The Lower Caverns, indeed. Aniese tried to tell herself that she wasn't a simple drudge but was distracted before she could start feeling bad about herself. "So then... I mean. Well, in the Hold, life was all about keeping the house fit for a family. So... here, it's about running the home so the riders can do their work?" She'd known the riders were the backbone of the Weyr but hadn't really relaized how much the Weyr revolved around them. Then again, they did risk their lives every time Thread fell when they rose up to fight it. She supposed, in a way, it made sense. "So then what's the attraction of being a rider? Sure, the whole Weyr is at your beck and call, but you're probably going to die..."

"What's the attraction?" Rhias spared an incredulous glance at the holdbred girl.

It was baffling to hear those words out of anyone's mouths. But she supposed holderfolk didn't always see the glory inherent in riding one of Pern's great defenders. Sure, there were plenty of holder kids that grew up dreaming of riding dragons, but plenty more with good level heads on their shoulders who'd rather not throw themselves at Thread until they died.

"A partner," she said at length, sounding uncharacteristically serious. "Someone who loves you completely and unconditionally. Will always have your back. You are never alone, and that makes everything you do for the Weyr, for Pern, worth it."

Rhias shrugged flippantly, as if dismissing her own words. "Or that's what I hear at least. I'm not a rider, so I don't know. Some people are just plain crazy and want to fight. Like me!"

Aniese was quickly aware that she'd said something unexpected or stupid or both, but she kept her face carefully neutral. Stupid question or not, she really needed to know. OK, so dragons couldn't hurt people. That made things marginally better. Well, more than marginally, but still...

The way Rhias spoke about Impression, Aniese suspected suddenly why riders didn't become handfasted. Though she'd never believed marriages really were like that, the way some of the doddering old Harpers spoke, they sounded uncannily similar.

So if you were marrying your dragon (in a sense), there was no need to marry someone else, some other human.

Aniese nodded slowly, then startled at Rhias's next words. "You what?" She blinked in shock. "You want to fight Thread? But... if you've lived in the Weyr, then surely you've been in the Infirmary after a Fall. Who'd want to go out in that?"

Impression, Aniese thought drolly to herself. She'd have to mull that over.

"Well yeah, I kinda do," Rhias shrugged. She set the last dish aside to dry and moved to start cleaning counter tops. "I suppose it's because it's what I feel like I was born to do. You get raised in a Weyr like I am, and you get a good sense of duty in 'ya. Contrary to popular belief, I can be responsible. I wanna help just like the rest of 'em."

"And I hear it's a rush. Proper terrifying but you never feel more alive than when you make it through a Fall unscathed. I want that. I want people to look at me and go 'damn'. But in a good way. You know?"

"Why does anyone want to do anything dangerous? Because it's the right fardling thing to do. And you get to look like one impressive motherfardler doing it. What's not to love? I can handle a little pain here and there for feelin' like I've done something worthwhile with my life."

Aniese swallowed uncomfortably and shifted. She wasn't sure at all that she liked the unexpectedly serious line this conversation was taking.

"Well... I see." Aniese had never wanted to do anything dangerous. Sure, she supposed some of her actions entailed certain risks. But flying in Threadfall was far worse than anything she'd ever done, and she was quite certain that she never wanted to. She supposed she wasn't made of the same stuff as Rhias.

"It just seems like there are ways to help that might... might not entail hurting yourself," she mumbled, moving to put some of the canisters back into the pantry. Truthfully, Aniese didn't know what she wanted to do. She didn't not want to help... but she was very uncertain that she wanted to help in the way Rhias was discussing.

Though truthfully, she hadn't known what she wanted to do ever since she'd arrived at Vaioa. Before, it had been so easy... She'd wanted to take over the Holding of Big Bay as soon as her father was old enough to retire.

She wondered what the equivalent was. Should she aspire to be Headwoman one day? A look of consternation crossed her features.

If she was absolutely honest with herself, she didn't know at all what she wanted to do. All she wanted was to survive each day until she could figure out what would be happening.

"...Would you be good at Threadfighting?" Aniese asked after a long pause. If Rhias was at least good at what she wanted to do, then Aniese aught to find something she was good at.

So far, that appeared to be scrubbing soot off the flagstones by the hearth.

"Dunno," Rhias answered honestly. "Won't know until I do it, I suppose. I mean, if I turn out to be absolute shaffit at it, maybe they'd stick me in the queen's wing to do the mop up work. Either way, I at least want to try."

She sounded almost indifferent as she continued with, "And if I'm really bad, I'll just die. Won't have to worry about anything then, so it's not worth fussing over. Dead people don't give a shaffit." The easy way she spoke of death unnerved plenty of people, Rhias wondered distractedly if Aniese would be one of them as she scrubbed furiously at the filthy counter tops.

"What about you? Got any aspirations of your own? I reckon you and me could take this place over if we put our minds to it." She winked saucily at Aniese, all mischievous smile and not at all the serious person she'd been just a few moments before.
