Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Aniese withdrew her hand from the floury, doughy mess on the counter in front of her and swiped it across her apron to remove most of the white powder before pushing back her sweaty hair. She'd tied the stuff up in a knot atop her head but all her kneading had caused it to start to slip loose, where it now was clinging to her sweaty forehead.

Midmorning chores were never Aniese's favorite pastime, but she preferred helping to cook rather than helping clean. There was a stack of dishes that needed washing, and the floor needed a mop, but the candidates would be here soon to help with those. In the meantime, Aniese had been able to help make that evening's bread by mixing the dough and beginning to knead it.

She never had wanted a life like this, all domestic housework and caretaking. But, she reflected grimly as she pummeled the dough, although she was stuck doing chores for much of the day, at least she was not chained to some Holder her parents had picked and she had no child in her belly.

Rhias gently shoved the brown fire lizard off her shoulder and watched as the brown winged off to beg for scraps from some poor kitchen worker. His presence during chores was more bothersome than it was worth and so she was happy to let him bother someone else while she blew through her work as quickly as possible to get to more interesting things.

Countless turns of the same damn tedious chores, day after day after day. Rhias didn't generally let anything get her down, but when she was mopping down counters and sweeping floors for the hundredth time since migrating from a Weyr where she'd done the same thing since she was twelve...well even she started to lose her patience. The only thing that changed was the people.

"Runnerbeast shaffit," she told a nearby kitchen worker. "That's what this is. You know I bet they tell little holder girls and boys that the Weyr is going to treat them like nobility when they Search them. But it's just dusting floors and shoveling shaffit."

She wiped the sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand and smiled wryly at the other girl. "And if you don't Impress, guess what! You get to do it forever! I might as well be someone's housewife."

Aniese jumped, startled, as the candidate next to her spoke, not long after arriving, and echoing the very sentiments Aniese herself had just been musing on.

Aniese chuckled in spite of herself and shot the girl a look. "Yeah, but at least you're not dropping children like it's the next best fashion." She grinned in spite of herself. "I don't know about royalty, but better to work for your keep than sleep for it, as far as I see."

Rhias laughed in delight and shoved a pot into a soapy sink, scrubbing furiously at the grime of last night's dinner.

"Fair enough! We get the option to drop unwanted packages between at least. Makes sex more fun." She flicked some suds at her curious brown fire lizard and grinned back over her shoulder at Aneise.

"I haven't seen you around, I don't think. Candidate? Or kitchen slave?"

Aniese flushed pinkly to her roots at Rhias's words and turned away quickly, using the excuse of grabbing the pans on the counter behind her as an excuse to try and calm her nerves. Think of the ocean in winter, she told herself sternly, trying to dispel the heat from her face.

She often forgot how liberal the Weyr was compared to the Hold. Not that she'd been forced to change her own morals, of course-- and the closest she'd come to "compromising" them had been to overlook the actions of her fellow Weyr residents. And while a small part of her still held very firmly that sex was bad, she had to admit, she supposed she didn't care too much what everyone else was doing as long as she didn't have to do anything she didn't want to. After all, dragonriders were died during Fall-- not frequently, but enough that it was a concern for everyone. Aniese supposed if their risk-taking made them more apt to engage in the more vivacious of activities, it was hardly any of her business. As long as she didn't have to be involved.

Aniese managed a smile and dipped her head slightly at Rhias. "Just a Lower Caverns worker," she said, with a rueful smile. "My name's Aniese. And those are candidate knots, right?"

When Jo refused to leave her in peace, Rhias dribbled soapy water onto the back of her brown's wings, chuckling at his outraged squack. The chestnut-colored fire lizard shot across the kitchens to clean himself off, leaving Rhias to focus on Aniese and chores unbothered.

"They sure are! Name's Rhias. I've been a candidate since I was old enough to stand. When Igen didn't want me anymore, Vaioa took me in. This'll be my first non Igen clutch. Don't suppose I'll Impress this time but I figure I've got a few good years left in me before I'm stuck doing this for the rest of my life."

Uncaring of whether or not the other girl was really interested in what she had to say, Rhias continued to ramble on. It helped pass the time at least. "You know most weyrbred candidates don't really have much to fall back on if they don't Impress. We grow up thinking we're destined to, and most of us don't. At least the Searched usually have a craft or something."

Aniese looked over at the firelizard as he squawked in dismay and shot off. She couldn't help grinning a little. Her own three hadn't exactly adapted well to training, but to Aniese, the change had been noticeable. They now at least stayed away when she asked, even if they weren't the best at delivering letters and such.

"Nice to meet you, Rhias." Aniese's smile turned slightly sour and she pummeled her dough for a few moments, avoiding the girl's gaze, which was pretty easy considering that Rhias was busy in the basin washing dishes. "Vaioa took me in, too." Aniese had to wonder what exactly was Rhias's story; had Igen disowned her as thoroughly as Big Bay had Aniese? She had the sense not to ask right then, though. People were always touchy about their histories and though Rhias seemed to be fairly good-natured and open, Aniese did not want to touch a nerve, especially not while the conversation was going so well.

Aniese knew nothing about the Weyrbred except that she had been told they were all immoral and destined for early deaths. She exhaled in wonder and nodded. "So do you usually become Weyrfolk? I always thought... I don't know... I thought most Weyrbrats Impressed. I don't know much about that part of Weyrlife."

Rhias smirked and set a clean pan aside, beginning work on another. "Yeah, contrary to popular belief, most weyrbrats don't Impress. There's too many of us! Just think of all the mating flights and flight mothing that goes on in a place like this. There's always a huge influx of children and never enough eggs for them all. All of them get the chance to stand but not all of them are suited for it. We don't have to be Searched; it's just assumed we would make good riders because we were born at the Weyr."

She set another dish aside. "But I heard once that there's something you need to Impress a dragon. Not all Weyrfolk have it, whatever it is." Maybe she didn't have it. She'd never been Searched either and she'd assumed all her life that she was meant to ride a dragon. Rhias had toyed with the idea of being officially looked at by a Search dragon before but hadn't wanted to hear a definitive answer. What if they said she wasn't suitable?

"So you were taken in huh? I'm sure you're much better off here than literally anywhere else."

"Oh." Aniese hadn't truly thought about that angle before. "So then... they don't really go between?" She knew-- as all Holders did-- that Weyrs were full of immoral sex and promiscuity, but she'd never really realized that they could have a population problem, too, at least not in terms of Hatchings.

Aniese laughed softly and bitterly in response to Rhias's question. "Yes, I'm much better off at Vaioa," she admitted, squeezing the dough hard until it oozed between her fingers. "Did you ever meet Rhyssone?" That was the main thing Aniese truly regretted now-- that she had never been able to express to the ex-Weyrwoman just how much she had changed, and her gratitude for the goldrider's actions. "Back when she was still here, she took me in. I was kind of sent away from my home hold." She smiled a lopsided smile and caught Rhias's eye. "But, like I said, even if the work is much of the same, there's no one trying to arrange marriages for me, and there's no... forced childbearing." She knew that sounded melodramatic, but she thought it best to call it what it was.

"I never met Rhyssone, actually," Rhias said thoughtfully. "But I was there when she came to Igen. They said she went crazy or somethin'. I figured it was your idiot Weyrleader's fault. Most folks just left her alone, gave her space. She didn't look crazy to me. Just sad."

"But you're right. Not having to pop out a brat every year till the day you die is a pretty sweet deal. She did good by you there. You can rest easy; no one can tell you to marry anyone here." She frowned then and chewed her lower lip thoughtfully.

"Don't actually think weyrfolk do get married. Even most weyrmates gotta face the fact that one of them might be sleeping with a stranger every few months or so by accident. Monogamy happens but it's rare. You give that up when you come here."
