Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

Verjiam followed his nose, searching for the kitchens in the weyr's lower caverns, which the lone rider who had brought him had directed the aged cook to after dropping him off. His potbelly swayed with each step, eyes searching around for the source of the smells.

He was here to help fill in the weyr's cooking staff...and he had high hopes to move into the Head position, though it might take him some time to get there, being an old veteran might at least give him some little authority over what he himself cooked at least.

On his shoulder was his blue flitter Grink, whose own belly was supported on the mans broad shoulders, snoozing away as if nothing at all was going on.

"Now...should be around here by the smell of it..."

Inundated. That was what she was. Inundated. What with the organisation of the Turn Day Gather and the up coming Hatching celebrations Rayna was run off her feet. But now she had two new Masters (weaver and vintner) to get to know and integrate into her routine. As if that was not enough a new cook was being sent to lighten the load of her kitchen staff. Though whether the man would replace Arley as Head Cook still remained to be seen.

As with everything in her Caverns Rayna had calculated and slotted the new arrival into the rotation within her Kitchen; she would need to see the man at work through all aspects of the Kitchen and not just one. The best way to do this? Rotation. Scheduled places meant people knew which tasks they were performing and meant SHE knew what everyone was doing.

An image popped into her head of a rather portly man she did not recognise, he was wandering around the Caverns in the general direction of the Kitchens. Only one person that could be then. Leaving her workers to their tasks the tall, foreboding woman turned away and moved into the corridor with easy grace.

It wasn't long before she spotted the man and a quick hand on the end of Shard It All's snout hushed any noise that might have been uttered by the Green at the sight of another Fire Lizard. No need for unnecessary noise right now. "Cook Verjiam I presume? I am Rayna, Headwoman here at Vaioa. I trust your travel was a pleasant one." She offered in her usual curt tone.

The man turned with a smile to Rayna, giving a nod of his head so as not to upset his little shoulder flitter.

"You would presume correctly, Headwoman Rayna. Aside from the cold of between, it was indeed pleasant. I'm afraid I'll never be comfortable with that...deprivation of my senses."

He shivered involuntarily at the thought.

"I much prefer the heat of the kitchen. At least a burn I can feel and learn from."

He shook his head and his smile returned.

"But I digress. Verjiam is here at your service. Oh, and this lazy blue on my shoulder is Grink. Grink, please awaken long enough to say hello to the Headwoman."

He shook his shoulder slightly, the hefty blue flitter waking for a moment and uttering a small peep at Rayna before going back to sleep, its own big belly wobbling just slightly from the shoulder shaking.

"Sorry Headwoman. He's something of a lazy bones. Not that I'd have the darling any other way."

He reached into a pouch on his side and brought up what looked like a tiny green ball, which he held up to Grink, whose eyes flew open and snatched it up, chewing thoughtfully before going back to sleep, albeit with a happy peep this time.

Shard It All hopped restlessly from one foot to another upon Rayna's shoulder; she wanted to say hi! She wanted to make friends with that Blue there! The woman sighed heavily and stroked the Green's head softly, giving silent permission for her to speak up now. Happy with this Shard It All gave a large trill to say hello to the Blue and his man. "Glad to receive you." Rayna said in response; once again her perceptiveness had led her right.

"I'm not sure that even Riders ever truly get used to going Between. They just ignore it, or at least I've been led to believe this anyway." The woman said, waving a hand in the air to dismiss the thought. "True enough; I'm glad to hear that someone can at least learn from their mistakes."

The woman snorted. "Lazy I can deal with. It's when they become flying nuisances in my Kitchen that I cannot stand the beasts." Rayna said simply, motioning with a hand for Verjiam to follow her. "Please, let me show you to the Kitchens so that you might get to know your domain a little better." She said as she strode back down the corridor, leading the man to the kitchens.

"Firstly Verjiam let me tell you something about the way my Caverns work. I believe in hard work; I believe in order and discipline. People do not particularly like me because of this but I would not be in this position if I gave even the remotest care for the opinions of others. I have not made friends doing this job, but this job does not require me to have friends - they are a luxury I enjoy. So know this; I am harsh but fair, prove yourself a hard worker and you shall be treated fairly, go against my orders and there shall be consequences. Because you are new you shall be assigned a position into one of my existing teams; however if you show me how hard you work you may be assigned a team of your own. You may not like this but as I have already said I am not likely to care. You have good credentials but I like to witness things with my own eyes - I shall be the judge. Teams work on rotation - they work one job for a Sevenday before being assigned a new task, this is to ensure all of my staff are kept fresh in all skills. Any questions?"

He followed, having given her flitter a nod upon its greeting, listening without interrupting as she spoke about herself, taking note of her 'business first' attitude, piping up when she finished.

"I do have a few questions. First: How well stocked does this kitchen keep spices. While I can be a jolly man, lacking spices is a disaster waiting to happen when the base of the meals start to lack in their own flavor. Two: Should you come up short on any shift, you wouldn't mind calling me first would you? Three: I would like some detail about those I will be working with, or under as the case may be, such as who to keep away from the stove and who to keep away from sharp objects. Four: I would like double assignments as often as possible, otherwise I'll get bored."

He then tapped his chest, making a rather resounding thump when he did.

"And I'm not here to make friends either. I'm here to prepare food for the riders who protect our lands from Thread, and make sure they are well nourished. A hungry rider is a distracted rider."

Meanwhile, Grink simply slept away, being as lazy as any flitter possibly could be. If rayna looked closely, she might catch that his shoulders had padding on them...probably for that flitter.

Good. At least this one wasn't a complete dimglow; Verjiam seemed to have it together and at least understood her reasoning which was more than some of the others ever had when they had joined her Caverns. And his questions! Oh thank Faranth for sensible questions! For one extremely brief moment Rayna could have embraced the man; oh what a breath of fresh air this was.

"First; extremely well stocked. Those in charge of teams are required to take a stock check; they are assigned a certain day within the Sevenday, these records are updated regularly throughout that Sevenday and any low stock is immediately acquired by the Riders of the Weyr, I do not allow for mistakes in any aspect. Second, I would be more than happy to call upon you should that become a requirement - naturally sickness or family needs often leave a shift open. Third, you shall have a proper introduction to your team and a list containing such information though I doubt you would have much trouble - the team leaders are very good at assigning tasks to those who are most competent at them. Fourthly, there are always extra shifts with the archivists. The last Master retired and sadly the archives are in quite a bit of a state, anyone looking for extra shifts have so far been working there. Otherwise I can always find jobs for a hard worker." Rayna said simply.

"Good, then you and I shall get along just fine." The Headwoman nodded, leading him into the Kitchen. "Your new home, for as long as you will have it."

The man didn't go in very far at first, observing the current activities, taking in the sights, sounds, and if the breathing through his nose was any indication, the smells. His eyes darted about, seeming to seek for something.

"A home I hope to feed well. And if this kitchen is any indication, it won't have a day of boredom. Good! The only time I don't want to be busy is when I'm sleeping, and I sometimes wish I didn't need it."

He turned to Rayna and nodded to her.

"Where would you like me to begin Headwoman Rayna?"

His blue squawked when he spun to face her, seeming to give him a glare before settling back down on his shoulder, though this time it stayed awake, as if unsure there would be more sudden movements.

"Yes. A quiet moment is something to be relished. Naturally there are the three main meal times but there are always the Watches to think about and the Wher patrols should they pass through the Weyr as they often do. We must be prepared to feed anyone at any time. The worst for being up late, or early depending on how you look at it, is of course the Weyrleaders. More often than not they will be up and about at odd times so we must ensure that there is food and hot Klah available for them should they require it."

Moving further into the Kitchen she motioned for Verjiam to enter and wander as he pleased. "Move about as you wish, get to know the place and the people as you like. I will assign you a team shortly but for now find your feet and locate equipment and supplies so that you know where everything is."
