Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

How far away are they?!
"Please Kythe just let me talk to you! Just give me a chance will you?" Kai said angrily as he reached for his sister to stop her from walking away from him.
"Don't touch me Kai. I've already told you to leave me alone. I am NOT in the mood to talk to you, I'm not happy with you. I will talk to you when and IF I want to. Now go back to the Hold and leave me alone... or else I'll have Trith take a munch on you. She'd be more than happy to. She's not exactly your biggest fan right now." Kythe looked over her shoulder at her brother, her eyes brimming with tears.

It broke his heart to see her like that, hurt him to know he was causing this conflict for her. She wanted to be happy to see him, he could see that, but what he had said had pushed her away... like L'harl had done Turns ago. He had hurt her. He had done this. He watched as his little sister left the Caverns to go about her duties and he immediately hated himself for pushing her again. Why had he pushed so hard?

Sighing heavily he sat in a seat and put his head in his hands. He was such a dimglow sometimes! What was wrong with him?!

Humming cheerfully to herself, Iverly walked into the dining hall, looking around for any familiar heads to sit and chat with. Her morning chores done, Iverly had nothing else to occupy herself with so was looking for some fun. After a quick look around she huffed to herself in disappointment, not seeing any of her fellow candidates. However she did she something that piqued her interest. A young man, head in hands and a girl marching out of the dining hall looking furious and upset. She paused for a moment, her mind whirling. She didn't recognise the young man, though that didn't mean much, she still hadn't been at the Weyr long. But, he did look quite unhappy and she really couldn't just walk away having seen him.

"Hey, is everything alright? You look pretty unhappy. Anything I can do to help? My name's Iverly by the way. I haven't seen you before so it's nice to meet you!" Plonking herself down in a seat opposite him she turned on the charm, a cheery smile on her face and endless chatter filling the silence. It would probably annoy him but it was the best way she knew to cheer someone up and she did hate to see someone looking so miserable.

If she were to be perfectly honest, Iverly was also just really, really curious about why an ordinary looking young man would be having such a argument with a rider.

Well he'd always known that their relationship was volatile, it had been since they were little - he loved her as much as she loved him but no matter how close they had been Kai had always had this tendency to open his mouth and put his foot inside it when dealing with Kythe. Kai knew all too well that he was like L'harl (though he would never ever admit to that) when it came to his sister; he assumed that he could protect her and look after her but Kythe just wanted to look after herself... and she could, he could see that, but how could you break the habit of a lifetime?

The Smith sat back in his chair with a sigh, why could he not just leave things well enough alone? Something in the back of his mind ALWAYS told him to keep out of it and keep his mouth shut but he just couldn't do it! There was something severely wrong with him, it was the only explanation that lad had. As a young woman sat beside him (a pretty one at that) all thoughts of his sister were immediately pushed out of his mind (or at least pushed to one side by his libido). A smile lit up his face as he looked at the girl, blue eyes flickering over her face, pretty girl.

He chuckled. "Sorry, headache. Terrible things. Especially when induced by your sister!" He grinned and took the girl's hand in his own. "But I thank you for your concern my dear, beautiful girl. You are a wonderful person to come and try to cheer up a stranger! Such a kind heart." He said in his most charming tone; that lopsided smile that was ever so attractive flickering to his face immediately. "My name is Kai, I'm a Journeyman Smithcrafter who just moved to Vaioa Hold. I have siblings here. You may have seen my oldest brother swanning about like he owns the place? L'harl, Rider of Copper Adinath. Pretty Copper, very pleasant compared to his Rider. My little sister, the one storming out of her moments ago, is a Greenrider, Trith is her Dragon. Wonderful pair... though not when annoyed by their older brother." He shrugged and chuckled softly. "I take it you're a Candidate here?"

Give me all your loves!
Iverly's smile widened by several degree's at the young man's rather flirty greeting. Well, at least he didn't seem bothered by her presence and (nosey) chatter. "Oh I wouldn't say kind heart. I mean sure, I hate seeing someone looking so miserable, but hoonestly...I was also quite curious. It's not often you see rider's talking with umm, normal people unless they're Weyrfolk, and seeing as I didn't recognise you I didn't think you were Weyrfolk, so I just had to know!" He was quite a good looking young man, Iverly couldn't help but notice, a charmer too by the seems of things, they were always fun!

She nodded then shrugged vaguely, "I haven't been here all that long myself so I don't know many of the riders." A sympathetic but still amused grimace crossed her face, "who knew I would ever be glad to be an only child." She looked over in the direction that the greenrider had stormed off in, "seems like siblings must be a lot of hard work. Though seeing as you're here you must get along fairly well, it's a fair way from the smithcraft to here. How are you liking Vaioa Hold? I haven't actually been to the Hold, though the Weyr is a nice place that I've noticed so far, though as I said, I haven't been here all that long, so I have yet to uncover any deep and dark secrets." That was said with more glee than any candidate should have when talking about secrets of a Weyr.

She nodded enthusiastically, "yep, was searched just before the last hatching, missed my chance to stand by just a few days but I don't really mind, now I get to actually figure out the way a Weyr actually works before having to deal with a possibility of a dragon. I'm craftbred as well so the Weyr is very to what I'm used to. I'm getting there though." Another shrug and delighted smile. "So you just here to see your siblings or are you going to be spending a lot of time here?" A nice and innocent question that would surely not seem out of place.

Kai laughed heartily at the girl's response and smiled warmly at her. "I like that answer. Curiousity, wonderful thing to have, but be very careful dear girl that it does not come and bite you one day - I've seen curiousity do that to a person before, had it done to myself and it's got a lot of teeth." At the words 'normal people' Kai feigned offence, throwing one hand to his head and another to his heart as though the words had burned him. "Normal people! Oh what a way to say it!" He grinned, winking at her. "Ain't anything normal about me my girl. Journeyman Smith Kai at your service, born at Benden so while a Crafter I may be Weyrfolk I am at heart." He chuckled. You could take the boy out of the Weyr....

"Ahh I love my siblings but they can be a pain sometimes. I have another brother actually, he's pitted for being the next MasterHarper when the current stands down. We're a very productive family!" He laughed. "Loving the Hold and the chance to be around a Weyr again, feels odd when you're not in one actually. But I like being away from the Hall so that I can continue my Craft elsewhere. It makes for a good chance to grow my abilities." He shrugged.

Ah now that question he liked. Leaning forward Kai clasped his hands around Iverly's and smiled. "Oh I'm going to be staying a while. Who knows, we may get chance to spend some more, quality, time together, if you would like that."

Give me all your loves!
Iverly's eyes twinkled in delight, oh she liked this young man, able to take gentle teasing and able to give it back, that was always nice. It was boring if people had no sense of humour. She gave yet another shrug, "Oh I'm usually careful about where I stick my nose, or at least careful about not getting caught. I try to be discreet, though I can't help but be curious about pretty much everything, I just like knowing what is going on, especially if other people don't." She grinned and laughed at mock pain, "ahhh, you probably know more about Weyr's than me then!"

Her eyebrows rose slightly at the mention of another brother, "that's impressive, two dragonriders and a possible MasterHarper in one family, productive indeed!" That was impressive, and very interesting, brother of someone would may potentially be the next MasterHarper, now that would be a very useful connection to have. Her eyes gleamed again as she considered the possibilities. "It is nice to be in a new place with a craft to give you something to work with. I'm from the Weaverhall, so I know the feeling. It's nice to know even if I don't Impress I have something to fall back on. Probably go on to become a Journeyman." Another shrug, returning to the Hall wouldn't be her first choice should she not Impress, but it would likely happen anyway.

Her grin widened even further as the he clasped her hands, "I'm glad to hear that, at the moment the only people I really know are the other candidates, and I'm still getting to know them, not all of them are particularly easy to get along with." She giggled slightly, "and with you being from outside the Weyr, you'll have different perspectives, I always like seeing how other people see the world. So I think more quality time together would be just wonderful." Oh yes, she did like this young man.

Kai nodded and smiled. "Glad to hear it. I'd hate to see you get into trouble for having a... shall we say open mind?" He chuckled and held out his hands, palm up as he shrugged. "I suppose so. It's been a long time since I've spent much time in one mind you. That said if you ever need a question answered then I am MORE than happy to oblige." He grinned. It really had been a long time since he had spent any time in a Weyr; since his Apprenticeship he had never returned to one except for when Kythe and L'harl had stood here at Vaioa. It felt odd to be here, just how easily he fitted back into the routines of the place, how familiar it all felt still despite being away from it for so long.

He chuckled slightly. "Aye, that's one way of putting it. We're a very determined family; if we want something then we work very hard to get it." That was about right. If ever he'd wanted something Kai had worked for it and had generally got it, that was how his life was, how all their lives were. L'harl had been rejected a thousand times over, one Hatching after another and yet he had still managed to Stand at the next one and the next one and the next one until he had Impressed that gorgeous Copper of his. Kythe had worked hard as a Healer before her own Impression while he and Kavan did what they needed to do to work their way up in their own respective Crafts.

"Oh pah! Not Impress, you? Not a chance. If you don't Impress then I will give up MY Craft and shovel Dragondung for the rest of my days." He snorted. "How old are you? You have plenty of Turns ahead of you before you need to start thinking about giving up. Let me tell you this, though he won't thank me for it even remotely, my oldest brother has stood for EVERY Hatching possible since becoming old enough to Stand. Only just Impressed a few months before he would have been too old to be eligible. What I'm saying to you is don't give up just because you get rejected once; doesn't mean you won't Impress."

Oh good. She would be spending some time with him it seemed. Smiling he winked at her. "Oh I am glad to hear that. Very glad indeed." He sat back slightly and let his tongue run across his lips, moistening them slightly. "Weyrfolk are like any other folk, they're a mixed bunch, some of whom are very difficult to get along with."

"Well I will certainly take you up on that should I have any questions!" Iverly was grinning wide enough to split her face, leaning forward slightly, elbows on the table, focused completely on her new friend. New friend, yes he certainly was a friend now, as simple as that. He was charming and humble and good-natured, everything Iverly looked for in a companion. Then there was that... intriguing factor of his siblings, he was rather well connected and she would never pass up a chance to make her own connections.

"Oh, I'm 19 turns, so I really don't have many more turns of being a candidates. I consider myself lucky to have been Searched at all. Though there does seem to be a few people here who are my age so I guess I'm not that unusual." She grinned at his comment, "now that is a brash thing to bet! I promise not to hold you to it when I become too old to stand and am still unbonded, wouldn't want you to ruin your life over little ol' me!" That was said with a cheeky grin and a giggle.

She listened with her head tilted to one side - much like a curious firelizard - as he spoke. "I suppose it is a comfort in some ways, knowing that some people Impress in their last chances. I think I will keep my hope then, right up until my last standing. Try not to get all downhearted and depressed like some of the others have." She wrinkled her nose a little at the memory of the moaning and complaining of some of those that had failed the last time around. To hear some of them, you would have thought it was the end of the world.

Her eyes twinkled as he winked at her, "I'm noticing that, very different to the crafthalls. Much more...open minded for sure. Also a lot more relaxed. I remember at the weaverhall things could get rather stressed, but here everyone seems a lot calmer..." She trailed off thoughtfully, her eyes leaving Kai for a moment to gaze idly around the room, though they flickered back to his face constantly.

Ahhh this was good. Kai was not a schemer, he was not a malicious person, Kai just liked female company... a lot. By laying the groundwork here it meant that he would be able to spend that much more time with Iverly, that he would be able to see her on a regular basis - it meant that she would come to HIM rather than anyone else if she had a question regarding Weyrs. After all Kai was a Weyrbrat, Kai was in fact a Dragonrider's son as well as a Rider's brother. Kai was connected and knowledgeable... yeah right. Kai knew a lot, that was true, Kai knew plenty but to go so far as connected? Well he was in his way but what did connections truly get you that hard work did not satisfy more?

Nineteen Turns? Was that all she was? Why then was Iverly selling herself so short so quickly? She had plenty of Turns left yet! As much as he hated his oldest brother he had to admire L'harl's staying power at least; despite everything, despite all the rejections his sibling had managed to walk onto the Sands time and time again with his head held high. He chuckled and grinned back; he had made the bet for one reason alone - he knew that she had potential and he knew that there was no way she wouldn't Impress. Maybe not first time but she certainly would Impress. Otherwise he would keep his promise and he would shovel Dragondung.

"I can imagine it can be difficult to keep your head held high when you have walked from the Sands alone while your friends walk with companions of their own. But at least you can keep hold of the knowledge that you have another chance." Kai said with a shrug. It would be the only thing that kept him going onto the Sands put it that way.

Oh he knew that look. His smile became more charming as he placed a hand gently upon her own; it was an innocent enough gesture but it had worked on more than one girl before now - when used by a guy as handsome and charming as Kai it could be dangerous to the health, especially the heart. "Weyrs are truly wonderful places. I suppose the different backgrounds account for the open mindedness. And you have to be more relaxed when you have a much bigger enemy, such as Thread, to deal with. Yes. Weyrs are wonderful." He grinned, before looking deep into Iverley's eyes. "Has anyone ever told you that your eyes twinkle when you smile? It's very pretty."

Iverly nodded thoughtfully, "I suppose that's true. But I guess you have to realise that there are always more candidates than eggs, there will always be some people who walk away alone, but it isn't the end of the world." She smiled at Kai, he really did seem to have it all figured out. "I'm almost surprised you're not a candidate, two siblings who are riders and you certainly know a lot." She gave a sort of shrug, not really sure what prompted the comment. It was strange, usually she liked being in charge of a situation, at least below the surface, but with Kai she felt quite comfortable with him directing the conversation.

She had to try hard not to react as she felt his hand gently touch hers. It was warm, slightly calloused (unsurprising given that he was from the smithcraft). It took her a moment to pick up the thread of the conversation again and even then part of her mind was preoccupied with that hand on hers. She nodded quickly as he spoke, "Yes that would probably explain the openness, everyone is so different you have to have an open mind or you would end up with high tensions between everyone, especially with people from different Hold's with different ideas." That was all she managed as his next comment caught her completely off guard, "Oh...oh, thank you." And just like that she was shy. The one thing Iverly was not used to was compliments. But she refused to be seen as a giggling idiot so she held Kai's gaze determinedly, though she couldn't help the smile that spread across her face.
