Welcome to Vaioa,

a desert triumvirate of Hold, Weyr, and Mine. Thread's return and bandit raiding brought strife between weyr and hold, but the bandits' recent defeat has returned the region to an uneasy peace. Now, a shipwreck on a forgotten continent and the decision to settle this rediscovered land has opened up a world of opportunity to Vaioa, if only they can handle the dangers.

You should dress finely every day. There's nothing wrong with looking your rank, you know, Tanohth intoned quietly.

It's not like I have much of a rank outside of being lucky enough to ride you, D'kir smirked as he scanned the racks of premade clothing in the storeroom. And not like I want anything quite as responsible as all that anyway... he shuddered. The very idea of being thrust in a position of rank made his head spin. It was strange enough being given the bit of respect simply because of the color of his shoulder knots.

The bronze gave a mental shrug and receded from his rider's mind.

In the end, D'kir did find a rather nice-looking hide vest and chose that, as well as a few tunics and a pair of trousers to fill out the offer he'd made the Headwoman in exchange for a small stack of marks. It felt a bit odd having marks in the first place. Yet another thing he didn't think he'd ever get used to.

On the other end of the storeroom, he heard the sound of someone moving around and flinched. He still didn't quite feel comfortable around other people outside of his wing, but it felt rude to not at least acknowledge whoever it was.

"Er... hello? I won't be in your way too much longer, almost done..." he inched his way toward the shelf full of boots to see if any were in his size, glancing around some rows of clothing to see who was there.

Hmm. I do like that green color, Aqueath mused. It looks better on you than that lighter shade.

R'jin 'hmmm'd quietly, pinning the garment to his shoulders to test its length, running a hand down his chest in order to see how the fabric would lay once it was smoothed flat. Some hellish firelizard had gotten into his wardrobe and slashed some of his tunics, and he was in desperate need of some more. Lady Emerald Shimmer insisted she didn't see or know who the culprit was, all the while hiding suspiciously underneath the bed.

While what he was holding wasn't a tunic, or really even a garment intended for a male, R'jin was too pleased with the color and texture of the fabric to make too much of a fuss. Quickly, he shed out of his shirt and pulled the simple dress on over his head, pleased as punch with the way it contoured to his sides and waist. It wouldn't be difficult to find a tailor that could snip the extra length off of the dress and turn it into a proper shirt, he thought, and maybe use the extra fabric left over for a nice vest.

Or you could just wear it as is, Aqueath ventured, earning a laugh from her rider.

"Er...hello? I won't be in your way too much longer, almost done..."

R'jin nearly jumped out of his boots, a hand flying to his chest to press against his heart, making sure it wasn't about to ram right on out of his ribcage. "Faranth, man! Don't sneak up on people like that, what if I were naked?"

Naked may have been better, R'jin thought a moment later, realizing he was standing around in a woman's gather finery.

D'kir started when he heard the thump of boots from a startled person and the admonishing tone. He scooted around the end of the row of clothing holding a pair of boots and his stack of clothing to see who was there.

Only to promptly drop the clothes and boots from nerveless fingers as he saw R'jin standing there, looking rather nice in the dress he was wearing. That thought sent a blush immediately to his cheeks and he stammered quietly, bending to pick up his garments to disguise his embarrassment.

"S..sorry. Didn't mean to startle you," when he straightened again, fumbling with the clothing a bit, his gaze couldn't help but run the length of the young man again.

His ears burned hotly, "Er... l-looks nice on you. Very um... very much your color."

Oh he is rather handsome, Tanohth prodded, amusement coloring his voice.

Shush, you, D'kir knew that spending time with Tytoth had been a bad idea... that bronze was a terrible influence on Tanohth.

"Well, what isn't my color?" R'jin asked airily, perusing the rest of the rack that he'd pulled the dress from. Hmm. That shade of pink probably wasn't his color. His bright orange hair and any shade of pink tended to clash awfully. "I can make just about anything work," he amended, doing a slow, languid turn in order to show off the dress in its entirety.

The person in front of him seemed discomfited, which suited R'jin just fine. The knots on his shoulder told him that this man was a bronzerider, which meant that he was long overdue for some embarrassment.

"In fact, I'm such a miracle worker, I could probably find a suitably fitting number for you, as well. Brighten up that dark hair and those smouldering eyes with something pretty, yeah?"

R'jin swaggered forward, hips wiggling maybe more than was strictly necessary, placing a fingertip on D'kir's chest. He drug the digit in small circles for a moment, before purring, "May be hard to find something that'll fit across those shoulders, though."

You're being awful. Ssshhhh this is wonderful.

The blush brightened further when the young man spun the skirt around himself slowly. He couldn't help but think that the flow of the fabric made the grayrider's hips seem perfect. His fingers twitched and the boots dropped to the floor again with a thunk and he shivered.

Was... was he flirting with him? He'd never been flirted with before, so he wasn't familiar with how it went. In fact the only intimacy he'd experienced thus far was at the hands of knowing flightmoths.

And if he was being flirted with, was it all that unwelcome?

Well... no. He recognized R'jin now as the notorious prankster many had spoken about, but at that moment it didn't really seem to bother D'kir. All he really knew was that he looked good in a dress and that seemed to make him all that much more attractive.

Clearing his throat, his breath wooshed out when R'jin touched him and he pressed backward against a shelf, "I'm ah... not much one for skirts. I think I'd leave that to you..." He sighed wistfully, "You wear them well."

Tanohth settled in the back of D'kir's mind to enjoy the show, basking in his rider's growing, confused attraction.

R'jin quirked an eyebrow, for once not sure how to proceed. This man was supposed to be throwing punches or yelling or doing his damndest to get away, not stuttering at him with red cheeks and stilted breath. Perhaps this particular bronzerider had a very high threshold for bullshittery, and R'jin just had to try harder to get a rise out of him.

About time something around here was actually fun.

He pressed forward, arms snaking around D'kir's shoulders, one hand reaching to toy with some stray locks of hair. "Aren't you a sweet one," he crooned, bumping his nose against the bronzerider's, having to dip his head slightly. In the back of his mind he wondered if his breath smelled bad, but decided that ultimately that wasn't important. Just a prank, after all!

It worries me just how much you're enjoying yourself, Aqueath admitted, though R'jin took her reluctance to tell him to knock it off as the grey's silent form of encouragement.

"I should just get you to follow me around everywhere so you can say nice things about me in front of everyone." He laughed, shoulders shaking a little.

D'kir couldn't help but chuckle, borderline giggle when R'jin played with his hair. His heart pounded in his chest at his proximity. He'd never known this kind of attention before, and he was enjoying it. A lot. It was heady like strong beer or a close call during Threadfall.

And R'jin felt about as dangerous as Threadfall too, in a way. Which was in itself enthralling.

The clothing he'd been clutching fell to the floor once again, though this time it went unnoticed as his hands moved of their own accord. One hand planted itself tentatively on each of R'jin's hips, though his nervousness was plainly evident in how the fingers shook where they rested.

"I should just get you to follow me around everywhere so you can say nice things about me in front of everyone."

R'jin's laugh made his head spin and he found himself laughing as well, and his voice was husky when he responded with a simple, "O-okay..."

The words that were about to roll off of his tongue stopped abruptly, his mouth hanging open just slightly, stupidly, in surprise. The warmth of D'kir's hands seeped through the somewhat thin material of the dress, the same kind of heat that he could now feel creeping across his cheeks. A brief, shocked kind of "ah-hah-hah" laugh broke from his lips. Was...was he being counter-pranked? The tremors in the other male's fingers felt genuine, but maybe the bronzerider was fighting back laughter. A tingle ran up his spine at the huskiness in D'kir's stuttered statement, and R'jin found himself wondering if it was possible to fake something like that so convincingly.

He had to regain control over the situation before it slipped out of his grip completely. Only one man was going to beat a hasty retreat out of here and it was NOT going to be him! So what, he had some hands on his hips. HE had the guy backed up against a shelf! The whole situation was still totally rolling in his favor.

R'jin... His grey crooned, tones laced heavily with amusement. She was old enough by now to realize what was going on, and self-aware enough of her rider's love for her to find the whole thing incredibly funny. Maybe you should raise the stakes a little? Isn't that what you always say...?

Aqueath was right. This was no time to play soft. R'jin tugged gently at D'kir's earlobe, threading the fingers of his opposite hand through the man's hair. "Why don't you tell me more nice things, mm?"

Victory was practically assured by this point.

D'kir's legs felt like noodles, and his knees threatened to give out under him at any moment. R'jin's hand in his hair and the tug on his ear made him gasp and smile tentatively. He pressed up against the shelf a bit more out of necessity now rather than nervousness, propping his elbows on the wood to support his weight, for his legs certainly weren't doing the job.

R'jin sure was... aggressive. What should he do? Ah shells, what do people do?

He really seems like he likes you, Tanohth whispered.

Maybe? What do I do?

Play back? It doesn't look like he wants anything less.

"W-well... you have nice..." he gasped again as the caressing fingers on his scalp sent tingles down his spine, "..n-nice... hands. And um... pretty eyes. A-and I... I like your freckles." All of this was true, he liked the other rider's color pallet quite a bit, it seemed warm.

D'kir swallowed heavily and boldly allowed his hands to slide up R'jin's sides. The other lad was rather skinny, but he found it alluring, since muscular men of R'jin's height would feel intimidating to him. His shoulders felt nice under his daring fingers, and he even went so far as to hook his pinky around the shoulder hem of the dress to tickle the skin underneath.

This no longer felt like a joke that was being played. His heart thrummed in his chest, breath caught almost painfully in a throat that was too dry. Nervously, R'jin licked at his lips, drinking in the compliments that sounded...genuine. He didn't think anyone had ever said something pleasant about his freckles before.

He took a deep breath when D'kir's hands slid up his sides, one hand dropping from the man's hair in order to slide tentatively along his jawline. "A brave one, aren't you," he murmured, more out of a need to fill the suddenly pressing silence than anything else. It was now very important that it wasn't quiet. The air between them seemed to fizzle, and if R'jin didn't fill it up with words he wasn't sure what he'd do.

All the advances he'd ever made towards members of his own sex were typically rebuffed with self-righteous anger or embarrassment, and that had always been hilarious. Sure, some had been receptive before, this WAS the Weyr after all, but R'jin had always left those ones in the cold because it wasn't funny to hit on somebody who was happy about it. This was...this was probably what it felt like to be in over your head.

This joke wasn't funny anymore.

D'kir's pinky shimmied under the sleeve of his dress and R'jin gulped, eyelashes fluttering in surprise. It was a very modest gesture, and a small one, but it felt monumental and now R'jin had no idea what to do with his hands. This was genuine, honest-to-shells attraction and attention and what was he supposed to do with it, oh no. Was it warm in here? It was really warm in here.

Aqueath was a warm presence in his head, and he clutched at that for a moment, grateful for the calm that she presented. She seemed amused, and content, and even a bit happy. This wasn't a catastrophe. It just...wasn't what it had started out to be.

Okay.

He leaned forward and brushed the tip of his nose against D'kir's cheek, pressing a small kiss to the edge of the bronzerider's lips. He'd sort this all out mentally later. For now this was a golden opportunity and he was going to take it.
